  • Five ways to develop mental toughness

Mental toughness is simply the ability to push through difficult and even painful situations while maintaining peak performance. It’s what separates the elite from the above average, and is only gained through training and hard work.

For entrepreneurs, business owners and our personal lives, it means having the strength of will to get through the hard times, and the presence of mind to avoid getting caught up in the good times.

Below are the needed ways to develop this invaluable quality.

    1.    Develop emotional awareness

To be mentally tough, you need to have a deep understanding of what makes you tick. That means becoming sharply aware of your emotions, and learning to control them, instead of letting them control you.

If a situation makes you angry, you are much better off channeling that energy into something productive instead of losing control in a fit of rage.

An increased awareness of your own feelings and behavior in turn helps you to better understand the emotions of others, if you let it. Many people go through everyday life without observing their surroundings, burying their heads in their electronic devices.

Law enforcement officers are trained to look at people around them in restaurants and airports and attempt to figure out their stories–such as what they do for a living, their mood, what they’re thinking–based solely on observation.

This simple focused-awareness drill trains a person’s mind to be clued in to what is going on with the people around them, and can be practiced by anyone at any time. In the business or work environment, it helps you to tailor your strategy specifically to the person or audience you are trying to reach.

    2.    Push through your limits

Mentally tough people know that to reach their full potential, they must get comfortable with being uncomfortable. When we don’t know what the future holds–whether we are starting our own business or moving across the country, the fear of change is there.

It not easy to pull up roots, disrupt relationships, and start over with each new assignment and career. The anxiety level will surely rise up because there would nothing but tension and uncertainty ahead of you.

But the old saying is true: If it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger. Focus on the fact that the current situation is temporary, and that it provides benefits.

For example, embracing a new situation forces you to grow and keeps you from becoming complacent. It teaches you to avoid becoming dependent on external sources, and allows you to thrive in any location or situation,” she said.

Change is never easy. But if looked at through the right lens, it is always empowering.

    3.    Control your mind

To be mentally tough, you need to keep a tight rein on your thoughts. Why? Because we become what we think.

It’s been said: “You can’t stop a bird from landing on your head, but you can keep it from building a nest.” In other words, negative thoughts are unavoidable. But you can refuse to dwell on those thoughts and allow them to take root.

By changing the way you think about self-limiting beliefs and other obstacles, you can rewire your brain in such a way that it works for you and not against you.

    4.    Focus, focus, focus

If you want to be mentally tough, you need to learn how to focus your mental and physical energy.

Olympic athletes are excellent examples of how to channel talent into success. They do not rely on luck to take home the gold medal. World-class experts practice with laser focus and a specific goal in mind. But it’s not just repeating the same task over and over–effective practice requires the following features:

Break down each task into individual parts

    ·       Spend extra time on actions you find especially difficult

    ·       Get feedback, and adjust accordingly

    ·       Put your ego on the back burner

    ·       Keep your goals in front of you

    ·       By focusing on practice, your willpower, persistence, and training will lead to personal mastery.

    5.    Pursue Growth

In life we have to learn, re-learn, try and repeat. Above all else, the mentally tough are learners.

At times, intelligence and natural talent are actually obstacles to success. Some who are born smart and talented never learn to work hard because things come too easy to them. But when times get tough, they give up.

Mentally tough individuals are voracious readers and love to learn new things. They also recognize the need to continue improving at the tasks they’re already good at. They know that starting out in first place is much different from finishing there.

And when they fall, they realize that mistakes are not failures. They are simply opportunities to learn.

With that learning comes increased confidence that you will do it better the next time.

  • 10 ways to enjoy your wedding day to the fullest

YOU’VE planned, organised, analysed your spreadsheets, worked with your coordinator, finalised details and checked off your list.

The big day is almost here. Are you ready to make sure you soak it all into the fullest? You’ve heard it before, but it really is true it’ll fly by! We’ve got a few tips to make sure all your planning and hard work is put to good use and you enjoy every moment of your big day.

    • Leave your phone behind. You’ve hired a professional photographer, everyone you love is there with you leave the digital distraction in your hotel room!
    • Remember to eat and hydrate. Don’t forget to have a small snack and lots of water, especially if you’re getting married outdoors in the heat and/or plan on drinking later in the evening.
    • Hire (at least) a day-of coordinator. Don’t want to worry about the caterer showing up late, or where that 18th table arrangement has gotten to? While were huge advocates of hiring a full coordination planner for the entire wedding planning process, if you haven’t done so already, invest in a day of coordinator. Trust us, it’s worth the money!
    • Speaking of professionals, don’t micromanage them. You’ve hired your vendors for a reason. Trust they know what they’re doing, and will do their jobs well!
    • Outsource the tips. While it’s never expected, it’s always appreciated to tip your vendors. Have the tips already arranged in labelled envelopes, and recruit someone trusted to hand them out as vendors arrive. You can also ask your coordinator to do this!

    • Take a few minutes with your new spouse. You’re officially married! Make sure to plan for a quick break with your new spouse maybe right after the ceremony, before you sign your license. Just sneak away for 10-15 and soak in your first moments together, alone.
    • Don’t over book. The morning of your wedding is inevitably chaotic don’t try to pack in more than you need to. There will be plenty of time to say hello to everyone later, and don’t plan to be finishing any DIY projects that morning. Schedule yourself a little more time than you think you need so you have a cushion, and can relax!
    • Stay in the moment. Easier said than done, but do your best to take a deep breath and stay in the moment. It really does go by ultra-quickly!
    • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember you can only control the controllable. If it starts raining, or a last minute delayed flight means your great aunt doesn’t make it in time, try to take it in stride. No large scale event goes off without a few small hiccups, and working yourself up into a fuss over something you have no power over won’t help anyone.
    • Have a glass of champagne. We are firm believers that a nice glass of champs improves everything!

  • A season of great comebacks

Times and seasons are natural phenomena of life. There is a season to sow, a season to plant, a season of rains, a season to laugh and a season to weep. A new season, it would seem, has come for the sporting world. It is the season of great comebacks.

From the world of golf to the world of football, a common trend has taken over and it is leaving hearts inspired. The two nearly opposite sporting worlds have experienced great unprecedented comebacks in the first few months of 2019.

In golf, Tiger Woods delivered the greatest comeback ever seen by winning the 2019 Masters more than a decade after a great lapse. So great was his extraordinary feat that it earned him the highest US civilian honor. This award was presented to him by US President himself, Donald Trump.

For someone who had lost his wife to divorce, lost key sponsors and underwent different surgeries ranging from his knee to his Achilles tendons, and to his back, his win on Sunday, 14th April 2019 was a great inspiration to many.

Delving into the world of football, Liverpool completed one of the greatest comebacks in football history, beating Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield and 4-3 on aggregate thrusting the club to the Champions League final. This occurred on Tuesday, 7th May 2019.

As with Tiger Woods, so great was the comeback that popular singer KCee lost a whooping sum of 1million Naira to a @mrchidozie on twitter. The singer had placed his confidence in Barcelona and promised 1 million Naira if Liverpool won.

The singer’s confidence wasn’t out of place. After all, the chances of Liverpool winning against Barcelona was next to impossible given that Barcelona was coming into the game with a 3-0 lead against Liverpool from their first leg. However, Liverpool shocked the world by winning the match with an irrefutable 4-0 win.

And just when we thought comebacks were over, Tottenham pulled off a beautiful 96th-minute last-gasp comeback by beating Ajax 3-2 just a day after Liverpool’s defeat of Barcelona. The win enabled them join their Premier League rival, Liverpool in the final of the Champions League.

Indeed it is a season of comebacks that leaves the same quote on everyone’s lips: “never give up”. For the sporting world, one question remains, is the comeback season here to stay? And if it is, in whose court or field will it land next?

  • How to slay for an owambe

We are Nigerians and Owambe is one thing we love a lot. Whether the country economic state is in shambles or not, Nigerians will always have reasons to party. Everyone wants to look stunning and exceptional at any events and generally go overboard spending on unnecessary things.

Being a wedding guest can be rough on one’s bank account especially with the increasing cost of aso-ebifabric. From the cost of makeup, shoes and accessories, attending weddings these days will probably put a huge dent in your wallet. Here are some tips on how to slay when going for an owambe:

Wear what you have. Not everyone is brave enough to try this but it works. After spending so much on aso-ebi lace, you shouldn’t put them at the bottom of your wardrobe. See those expensive fabrics as an investment for future events. If you already have an existing dress matching the colour palette of an upcoming owambe, why not dust off the fabric, slay and save you coins, more importantly, if you cannot afford it?

Keep your style simple and trendy. Don’t be too extravagant, dress simple and moderately and you definitely look hot. We all love to look in an all shades of penging way and on fleek at an owambe but then follow the “KISH” Keep it simple and hot.

It is possible to slay in a simple, yet stylish outfit. From jumpsuits to off-shoulder dresses, there are a variety of classy, yet affordable designs to choose from.

Feel comfortable. Whenever you are going for an owambe always ensure you are comfortable in whatever you are wearing. Study show that your outfit can affect your emotional state. Therefore, if you want to have a good time at a party, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and attractive. Avoid wearing anything that makes you feel awkward. Otherwise, you may come across as awkward at the party.

Look charming. While the men look dapper and maintain their sweet boy status, women are now expected to slay, styling up themselves to a whole new level.

Put up a smile. No matter the situations or mood you might be when going for an owambe smile and never stop. It is one of the best make-ups you can wear when you want to slay for a party.

Wear perfect footwear that matches your dress. For the ladies you could put on heels. For the men, you could wear a shoe or sandals to match the dress.

Consider the occasion. Whenever you’re going for an owambe consider the type of attire you would for the occasion and do a perfect combination.

  • Chronic stress can harm female reproductive function-Study

Chronic stress could be harming female reproductive function due to the overproduction of a hormone linked to appetite, an Australian study revealed on Friday.

When a person is stressed, the body produces a hormone called ghrelin, which stimulates appetite; and this is  why some people overeat when they feel emotional or are under pressure, says the study.

Ghrelin also affects fertility by reducing the number of ovarian primordial follicles, which release egg cells for fertilisation.

“The length of the female reproductive lifespan is strongly linked to the number of primordial follicles in the ovary,’’ the senior co-author, Dr Luba Sominsky from Australia’s RMIT University said.

“Losing some of those primordial follicles early is often predictive of early reproductive decline and deterioration’’.

Along with her team, Sominsky showed that by blocking Ghrelin receptors in the brains of female mice, they were able to mitigate the effects of stress on ovarian function, opening avenues for studies on humans, who share many of the same bodily functions.

Sominsky said that young and otherwise healthy women generally experience only temporary effects from stress on their reproductive systems.

However, women, who are already suffering fertility issues may see more direct consequences.

“For women already suffering from fertility problems, even a minor impact on their ovarian function may influence the chance and timing of conception,’’ Sominsky said.

While the study is still in its early stages, Sominsky says it is on the right track to developing interventions; to help maintain women’s reproductive health. (Xinhua/NAN)

  • 6 ways to avoid dehydration during Ramadan

During the holy month of Ramadan, it is important to eat a balanced diet and keep hydrated before and after the day of fasting.

Mild dehydration can result in fatigue, dry mouth, thirst and headaches. It is vital to drink enough fluid on a fast.

Drinking the typical eight cups per day is important, but there are other things to remember to help you stay hydrated.

Here are some tips to help you avoid dehydration when you’re fasting.

    1. Avoid drinks containing caffeine

As much as we love our coffee and tea, these drinks contain caffeine. Caffeine has a diuretic effect that increases urine production, thus flushing out salt and water from the body.

Too much caffeine can result in increased thirst, so to stay hydrated throughout the day, it’s best to stick to water or fresh fruit juices.

    2. Break your fast with plenty of fruit and vegetables

Eating fruits and vegetables aren’t just good for your health, but they help with hydration too. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in water and fiber. They stay in the intestines for a long time and reduce thirst.

If you don’t want to eat the vegetables as they are, try incorporating them into a salad as part of your meal when you break fast.

    3. Avoid spicy or salty food

Spicy and salty foods can increase your body’s need for water, because they cause water retention.

If you’re cooking during this period, try not to use too much salt or too many spices.

    4. Avoid chugging your drinks in one go

Drinking your water in one go will cause your body to flush it out soon after. It’s best to sip water throughout the non-fasting hours of the day.

But ultimately, do make sure to get enough water during the non-fasting hours to avoid dehydration.

    5. Avoid exposure to heat

Exposure to heat is inevitable, but do try to avoid the heat as much as possible.

Hot temperatures will cause sweating, resulting in fluid loss. Try to limit your time outdoors and stick to the shade or cool environments.

    6. Take Cold showers.

Cold showers help in many ways to rehydrate you during the month of Ramadan.
You should try to lower your body temperature in any way possible. Spend 5-10 minutes with the base of your head under direct cool water.

It is important to know that drinking iced water to break your fast does not replenish your thirst but can cause your blood vessels to contract and cause indigestion.
For this reason, it is recommended that you drink water at room temperature or slightly cold if you prefer to.

These suggestions as shared by Jumia, Nigeria’s leading online travel agency will help you travel the world without breaking the bank.

    Book your flight months ahead

This is one of the most important tips that you should follow. The earlier you book your flight with Jumia’s hotel and flight marketplace, the cheaper the flight will be. While it might seem like a lot of commitment to book this far ahead, the benefits it will serve in the long run will be immense.

    Go for package deals

Package deals can be a great way to save money on a trip. Again, Jumia’s hotel and flight marketplace have quite affordable packages to some of your favourite destinations like Dubai, South Africa, London, Cape Town, Accra and France among others. Regardless, it is important to do an extensive amount of homework before committing. But the value of finding a good one could be tremendous.

    Travel in a group

An excellent way to save money is by having other people come along for the ride. While this largely depends on who you feel comfortable travelling with (as well as for how long), consider bringing a group together to cut costs down.

    Barter with other travellers

Trading with other travellers can be a great way to save money. You never know who might be willing to host you in exchange for you doing the same. Additionally, certain things could go far on the road, so don’t discount what you and others might find valuable.

  • Seven notable legacies of late President Musa Yar’Adua

Exactly nine years ago, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua breathed his last. The Katsina-born died after suffering from Pericarditis.

Despite the many intrigues that trailed his sickness and eventual death, Yar’Adua is still well respected and acknowledged for many changes in the nation’s polity. This is despite the fact that he was in office for just three years.

Below are some of the changes he made for which he remains beloved:

    • Reduction of fuel pump price. Yar-Adua is the first Nigerian leader to carry out downward reverse of hike in fuel pump price. As soon as he was inaugurated on May 29, 2007, one of his first actions was to reduce fuel price from N75 to N65. This act was widely praised by Nigerians.
    • Niger Delta Amnesty Programme. The former Katsina State Governor initiated the Niger-Delta Amnesty Programme which saw hundreds of youths in the oil-rich Niger Delta empowered. This was contrary to the popular notion that he would clamp down on the restive youths who were blowing oil installations for their grievances. The programme was well-received and doused tensions in the region, thereby shoring up oil production with many of the ex-agitators rehabilitated.
    • Abuja-Kaduna rail route. Though he never lived to see its completion, Yar’Adua initiated the Abuja-Kaduna rail route. Thankfully, President Muhammadu Buhari went on to commission the project in July 2016.
    • New Minimum wage. Workers would remember the late President for initiating the move that led to the N18,000 wage on February 22, 2011 when the Senate approve the new wage. It was Yar’Adua who inaugurated the Presidential Committee on National Minimum Wage headed by Chief Justice Alfa Moddibo through the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed. The new wage was approved by his successor President Goodluck Jonathan following recommendations of the committee.
    • Dredging of River Niger. After 40 years, Yar’Adua recommended the dredging of the River Niger, which he couldn’t sadly see through until his demise.
    • Declaration of Assets. He had the honour of being the first Nigerian leader to declare his assets. He declared he had ₦856,452,892 (US$5.8 million) in assets, ₦19 million ($0.1 million) of which belonged to his wife. He also had ₦88,793,269.77 ($0.5 million) in liabilities. His plan, clearly, was to set a good example for public office holders and discourage corruption.
    • Release of Lagos councils’ funds. For almost four years, former President Olusegun Obasanjo refused to release federal allocations to Lagos state, claiming the creation of 37 Local Council Development Authority(LCDAs) by former Governor Bola Tinubu was a misnomer. But Yar’Adua, within months of assumption of power, reversed the widely criticized presidential order and released all the withheld allocations, running into billions, to Lagos.
