TRENDING: 7-year-old girl asks Google for a job, gets reply

7-year-old Chloe Bridgewater wrote a handwritten letter to Google, asking for an opportunity to work with the tech giant.

Chloe’s desire to work with the tech giant grew after her dad, Andy Bridgewater, showed her pictures of Google offices decked out with bean bag chairs and slides.

    Chloe

    She writes: “Dear google boss

My name is Chloe and when I am bigger I would like a job with google. I also want to work in a chocolate factory and do swimming in the Olympics.”

In the letter, Chloe discusses her qualifications – she likes computers and has a tablet on which she plays games.

And she even includes references: “My teachers tell my mum and dad I am very good in class and am good at my spelling and reading and my sums.”

It is not an overstatement to say that this young girl knows how to market herself.

Thus, on receiving the letter, Google CEO Sundar Pichai replied her with big hopes and encouragement.

He said: “I think if you keep working hard and following your dreams, you can accomplish everything you set your mind to.”

Chloe’s father who is a Regional Sales Manager with a Hardware company in the United kingdom, posted the reply on LinkedIn saying: “After seeing images of Google offices with their bean bags, go karts and slides my 7-year-old daughter decided to write to Google to see if they would give her a job. She lost a great deal of confidence after being knocked down by a car a couple of years ago.

“However, to say she is delighted after receiving this letter signed by Sundar Pichai himself is an understatement. She is now even more eager to do well at school and work for Google. Can’t thank such a busy person enough to take time out to make a little girl’s dream become one step closer, although not sure she’s fully aware that it’ll take more than riding go karts and sleeping in pods to make it with Google!

  • What Exactly Are Blackheads?

    What Exactly Are Blackheads?

Blackheads are really a specific type of acne, triggered by sebum (otherwise known as face oil) production. If a clogged pore “remains open to the air, the oils in the pores oxidize to a black color, which is why we called them ‘open’ comedones or blackheads.”Here are tips to deal with black heads. Before you can begin to start treating blackheads, it’s a good idea to actually know what you’re dealing with. As you can’t really fix a problem when you don’t know what’s causing it.

Keep in mind that they aren’t composed of dirt stuck in your pores. It’s really just the natural oil from your skin, turned a darker color.

    Those May Not Be Blackheads
Also not all large pores have blackheads. Also, not everything that comes up when you press your pimples are blackheads either. Grab a magnifying mirror and take a (much) closer look. You may just have microscopic hairs that look like blackheads. A visit to your dermatologist, to tell the difference between the two diagnoses, can make the difference in getting rid of these spots.

    Sebaceous Filaments

Besides microscopic nose hairs, you could have sebaceous filaments. These, instead of turning black, are clear. Sebaceous filaments don’t oxidize like blackheads do, meaning they don’t have the telltale color change. Sebaceous filaments are like blackheads, in that they both have condensed oil and skin scales, but they aren’t totally congealed like blackheads. Sebaceous filament material may congeal into a true blackhead, and most blackheads have had former lives as sebaceous filaments. With proper cleansing and care, however, sebaceous filaments can be softened, dissolved, and/or lifted up and out of the oil gland ducts.

    Blackheads Can Show Up Anywhere
Not all blackheads live on your nose. You can get blackheads anywhere you can get a pimple; they’re just more common near the oiliest parts of your skin. In fact, blackheads regularly show up on areas besides the nose and chin. To be honest, most people can have blackheads on the face, chest, and back. Blackheads are dependent on many different factors. A combination of the thickness of your sebum, the stickiness of skin scales, and how well both can move through the pore. Oil and scale production amounts, and qualities vary from place to place on the skin and, in the same person, vary over time due to developmental and hormonal factors.

Topical Treatments To Bust Through Blackheads
So by now, we know blackheads are made up of oil and skin scales getting stuck in a pore. When you’re a hormonal teen with an especially oily T-zone, it may seem like there is nothing you can do to quell the oil. And, for many, that may just be true unless they turn to hormonal regulation through something like the birth control pill.

Even if you can’t stop your skin from being oily, you can help to keep that pore from getting clogged in the first place. Adding a retinol in your nightly regimen, exfoliation using an at-home peel to remove dead skin cells, and products with salicylic acid like cleansers, and spot treatments are your best bets for treating your blackheads at home.

Search for these three specific skin-care ingredients:

Salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and vitamin A. Salicylic and glycolic acids work well together to decrease oil production and vitamin A (found in retinols) is a great exfoliant. Prescription-strength varieties of vitamin A are sometimes necessary if the acne is severe, but during harmattan months, use over-the-counter versions of retinol.

    DIY Treatments For Blackheads
But if you aren’t into buying lots of new products, you can also look to DIY treatments for acne. Here are a few concoctions for treating blackheads with ingredients you may find in your own kitchen.

    Turmeric mask

Combine turmeric powder with chickpea flour, and plain yogurt to create an easy DIY mask. It’s what Indian brides bathe in the day before their big wedding day.  Apply the mask for 10 minutes, and then rinse it off to avoid staining towels with the bright yellow pigment of turmeric. You’ll notice the improvement in the blackhead acne, as well as the overall complexion of the skin within the first 48 hours. It works great and is pregnancy safe!

    Oatmeal and Honey Mask

Combine oatmeal and raw honey, mix in with filtered or distilled water, and apply as a mask. This can pull out sebum.” This type of mask is great for sebaceous filaments.

  • Taking another look at the Buhari, Trump phone call

Taking another look at the Buhari, Trump phone call

In a  major boost to his global acceptability, President Muhammadu Buhari had a phone conversation with president of the United States, Donald J Trump. That meeting has reversed years of travesty as Trump committed to helping Nigeria’s military by the hardware needed for fight fighting terrorism. Not only has his predecessor refused to sell arms to Nigeria, he also blocked other willing nations from doing so, citing right abuses that were never proven beyond reasonable doubts.

It is rightly an endorsement of the accolades that have come the way of President Buhari. His spokesperson, Femi Adesina revealed that “President Trump encouraged President Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commended him for the efforts made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military. President Trump assured the Nigerian President of U.S. readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism.”

The travesty under the previous US government of Barack Obama was one in which weapons were handed to terrorists affiliated rebel groups in Syria and the Middle East and a sovereign nation like Nigeria is denied the right to buy military equipment to fight terrorists. More worrisome are reports that some of the weapons given to the rebels find their way into the arsenal of Boko Haram and made defeating the group take longer than necessary.

Further to blocking the sales of weapons to Nigeria, that previous administration also did not make meaningful contributions to anti-terror efforts in Nigeria but instead NGOs that were sympathetic to its policy of destabilization kept cooking up reports of rights violation against Nigeria’s military and security agencies, which were then further used as justifications to allow Boko Haram gain ground in those days by not allowing the country buy the needed weapons and equipment.

But for the ingenuity and relentlessness of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt General Tukur Buratai, who made the Nigerian Army look inwards to its electrical and mechanical engineers in refurbishing abandoned and unserviceable equipment and weapons, it might have as well been over for Nigeria as the terrorists would have overrun the country.

In addition to using the available hardware to defeat Boko Haram, the leadership of the armed forces also demonstrated unwavering commitment to the rights and safety of the civilian population and by and large the human rights record of the Nigerian Army under General Buratai improved enough for the immediate past US administration to have lift what was effectively sanctions on the sales of arms to Nigeria but it never did.

As someone that would not sacrifice practicality on the altar of political correctness – he actually detests that concept, President Trump has demonstrated better assessment than the government he replaced. With the phone call to President Buhari, he has proven he is convinced that America can now sell weapons to Nigeria, being satisfied  that the military has done much to conform with best practices under the current leadership.
That phone call has proven several other points that should make the scales fall from some person’s eyes and the wax plugging their ears to melt off. Separatists in the south east under the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), relying on the campaign of disinformation by compromised international NGOs had revved up for confrontations with the military in the hope that Trump would order missiles to rain down on Nigeria.

Before the phone call between both leaders, IPOB propaganda machine cranked to the maximum, giving false hopes to the average Joe that the US President would read the riot act to President Buhari to allow Biafra secede. No responsible nation will ask that of the leader of another sovereign nation. It turned out that even the IPOB and MASSOB members that hosted congratulatory marches for the inauguration of Trump were victims of fake news, another of the world’s emerging problems that the US President dislikes with passion. The IPOB leadership had lied severally that Trump endorsed their acts of treason against the Nigerian state.

Like IPOB, the delusion of militants in the Niger Delta, whose salesmen have been trotting the globe to market separatists’ agenda to foreign lawmakers, has also gone bust. Same applies to killer herdsmen that leave trails of blood across the land. They are all the product of the same mold as Boko Haram. Their disdain for the state and carrying out attacks lump them all together.

Those lending themselves to the activities of these groups would do well to request the transcript of the phone call. For one, nowhere was it discussed that they have the free pass to turn Nigeria upside down. Two, what was discussed included “cooperation in the fight against terrorism”, under which their nefarious activities fall.

One must therefore urge the Presidency not to allow the invitation for a US visit to cool now that relations between both countries has shown improvement. Beyond setting out concrete terms of the military hardware Nigeria will be buying, President Buhari should use such visit to provide clarity to the US President on the dangers posed by these groups that are yet to make it onto the list of international terrorist organizations even though they are already known as such locally.

On the other hand, Mr President must encourage the military to continue to improve on their rights records as the aforementioned terror oriented entities will contrive provocative incidents in efforts to make Nigeria look bad before the US. While at it, General Buratai should work more of his magic. The Nigerian Army should graduate from salvaging mothballed military hardware to mass producing many of the ingenious designs that are being fabricated under his watch.

With this, when the next US President is calling to discuss with a Nigerian leader he should be getting assurances that  Nigeria will sell hardware to his country.

  • So what exactly is love?

    So what exactly is love?

Its St Valentine’s Day today, a day set aside to celebrate love and lovers the entire world over, but as we celebrate, what exactly is this thing called love? Is it sex, giving of gifts, feeling butterflies or what? Unlike the English language which has only one definition for love, Latin which has five words, and explains the different types of love.  We’ll take a look at some things that love is not, and end with the essence of love.

Is it sex? Not at all. In a strongly sensual age, sex has become commonplace, and many confuse sex with love.  It is possible to have one without the other, but the greatest lover is one who chooses to love without consummating the relationship, especially if they are not married. Waiting until the right time to do that is the best way to say I love you. However in a committed relationship like marriage, sex is the most beautiful gift given by the creator to mankind. It has the power to cement two hearts together, even as it can destroy a couple who choose to profane this wonderful gift.

Can it be bought with gifts? True love can never be for sale, even though a lover will always give something. So as you give flowers, cards, chocolates, and all during this valentine remember that giving gifts should never be the foundation of a relationship. Never be with someone simply because of what you can get from that person, but for what you can give to them, and add to their lives. You see humans are meant to be loved, not used.

Love is a caring about that special someone in your life so much that you think always of them, and do what is best for them. As Beverly Haye once put it, “The most difficult person in the world to love is a selfish person, who thinks only and always of himself, and no one else.” Conversely, it means that the easiest person in the world is a selfless love is a selfless person. A person in love is selfless, thinking more of the beloved that himself. The way a mother thinks nothing of going hungry just so her kids can eat and get an education. Michael Bolton captured this desire inherent in the female folk for love in his remake of the song “When a man loves a woman.”

  • True story behind Valentine

    True story behind Valentine

Valentine is all about the exchange of gifts and romance, right? Well, it is not so.

It all started with a kind-hearted, humble priest named Valentine. During his time, there was an emperor in Rome named Claudius who persecuted/tortured Christians. He made a law that prohibited marriages and engagements in Rome. This is because he had difficulty getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families. He also reasoned that single men made better soldiers and fought better than those with wives, saying that if they are married, they would be afraid of what might happen to their wives and family if they died in battle. So, he banned marriage for young men.

Valentine, realising the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against the command of Emperor Claudius and for protecting Christians.

While in prison, Valentine met Asterius, who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time. Asterius had a daughter named Julia who was blind. Valentine prayed and healed the young girl. This had an astonishing effect on Asterius, who became a Christian as a result.

In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three-part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally beheaded, all because of his stand for Christian marriage.

Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote Julia a letter signed “From your Valentine,” this inspired today’s romantic expression- ‘your valentine’. It was said that the content of his letter was an advice to Julia that she should be very close to God.Valentine story

Saint Valentine’s martyrdom (death) has not gone unnoticed by the general public; although many people celebrate valentine without any understanding of what it means and what it stands for. We find people, especially the young ones celebrating it the wrong way- they see it as a time to get a man/woman/boy/girl to celebrate with by doing all kinds of ungodly things- if Saint Valentine was alive, I believe he will not be happy, the way people have misunderstood his sacrifice for humanity to sustain reproduction through marriage.  Most people are not learning the lesson of self-sacrifice in fulfilment of one’s destiny which valentine stands for.

The celebration of Saint Valentine did not have any romantic connotations until sometimes later in the 14th century, when people started to make it a romantic celebration. Earlier beliefs were focused on sacrifice rather than romantic love.

    Lessons:

    1. The idea of encouraging young lovers to marry within the Christian church was what Saint Valentine stood for, he didn’t encourage sexual immorality at all. Rather, his action was to discourage sex outside marriage and all kinds of immorality which botht married and single have now turned valentine to mean.
    2. He performed marriages for those ready for marriage, knowing that sex outside of marriage is a sin against one’s body and against God.
    3. Valentine was a saint and not a sinner- why then do people make him seem like an encourager of sin by celebrating him in sin.
    4. If you’re not married then desist from sex. If married, be faithful to your husband/wife. This is what Valentine stands for-
    5. Valentine is about doing God’s will. God Himself instituted marriage, not premarital sex and other sexual activities outside marriage. Valentine upholds God’s wish for people who are willing, to marry and have children.
    6. Saint Valentine healed Julia, the blind girl and her Father became a Christian- Why aren’t people believing God for such power to do good, and God being glorified through them, making many to come to believe in Jesus?
    7. Saint Valentine gave his life so that young couples could be bonded together in holy matrimony. They may have killed the man, but not his spirit. Valentine teaches sacrifice for the right thing, even unto death. Willing to do the right thing at all times. Why are we not learning this lesson?
    8. Centuries after his death, the story of Valentine’s self-sacrifice and commitment was legendary in Rome. You too should live a life committed to a good course and the world will remember you for good.
    9. Whenever valentine is celebrated, ask yourself- what good thing have I accomplished for my generation that I will be remembered for after my death? You are not too small to begin to do great exploits for God, exploits that will change your generation for good. Start from where you are, it may start little but it will grow with time. Peace!!!

Eventually, he was granted sainthood and the Catholic Church decided to create a feast in his honour. They picked February 14 as the day of celebration.

Think of fulfilling your God-given destiny on earth- that’s the message of Valentine.

World Condom Day: Foundation distributes 1.5m pieces

The AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF), an NGO, says it will distribute 1.5 million condoms in Nigeria as part of activities to commemorate the 2017 World Condom Day.

The Country Director of AHF, Dr Adetayo Towolawi, made this known during the commemoration of 2017 World Condom Day on Monday in Abuja.

He said that the distribution of the condoms, with other activities lined up for this year’s occasion, would help increase awareness on the use of condom and its role in preventing HIV and AIDS.

The director said that condom played an important role in the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

Towolawi said the day coincided with a prelude to the Valentine’s Day, noting that where people shares time with their love, HIV also found time to spread within the period.

Wordle AIDS“In order to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS while expressing sexuality, we need you to take care of your sexual and reproductive health by using the condom correctly,’’ he said.

The country director said the foundation had been distributing condoms and conducting free medical outreaches.

He disclosed that in the last five years, the foundation had distributed between 1.5 million and two million condoms annually.

Dr Kema Onu, AHF FCT Coordinator, said the foundation would use the event as a platform to reach out areas difficult to capture on safer sex awareness campaigns.

He observed that many people knew about the condom but very few people wanted to use it, stressing that the event will preach a behavioural change towards condom usage.

Earlier, Dr Sani Aliyu, the Director-General, National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), said that the agency in collaboration with partners would focus more on creating awareness that HIV/AIDS was very much with us.

“The main message is that if you are not sexually active, abstinence is the best way to stop acquiring HIV/AIDS.

“But if you are sexually active make sure you know your HIV/AIDS status and use a condom as much as possible to protect yourself.

“So, if you do not know your status, this event is an opportunity for you to have an HIV test for free,” he said.

The World Condom Day is observed on February 13 annually.

  • Child’s road safety rules

    Child’s road safety rules

As I drive around Lagos every day, I see a lot of children on the road obviously clueless about road safety. Children jump into the road without looking left and right, they walk carelessly on the road oblivious of the dangers on the road.

According to report by UNICEF, road accidents kill 260,000 children every year and injure 10 million. It is worrisome that despite this alarming report, child safety on the road is not taken seriously. I have seen children of 6 years walking to school alone and crossing busy roads without an adult with them and some even take their younger ones to school and cross busy roads dragging two younger siblings along.

Each time I see this I always wonder if their shouldn’t be a law against this? How careless can some parents be, knowing very well that these children do not know basic road safety rules and how reckless some drivers can be, coupled with the bad road network in Nigeria, with no sidewalks, pedestrians practically struggle for road with motorists. This is so sad and it’s the more reason why children below the age of 9 need to walk to school with an adult especially where they would need to cross a busy road.

It is extremely important that children receive road safety education early as part of school curriculum as this will teach children safety skills to stay safe on the road.

Parents have thrown caution in the wind while driving their children; they find it difficult to obey the rules of child road safety. Some act out of ignorance and some are just out right disobedient to simple driving rules. They claim to be in a hurry or don’t just see themselves being involved in an accident till it’s too late and then they realize how one simple adherence to a safety rule could have prevented a grievous harm.

Some parents don’t even know that it is wrong to carry children without seat belts, it is common to see children in a car unstrapped, jumping up and down in a moving vehicle, some even pop out their heads through the window. Some days back while dropping my children off school, I saw some children popping their head out of a car window, when the car stopped during traffic, one of them opened the door. I quickly horned and alerted the mom of what was happening, she was horrified and started shouting at the children, typical of some Nigerian parents, she didn’t take advantage of child safety lock which prevents children from opening the door while the car is moving or when its stationery and she didn’t use the window lock as well, which would have prevented the children from winding down and poking their heads out of the car.

It is also unsafe for children below the age of 12 to sit at the front seat; this is to prevent suffocation in the event of an accident where the air bag inflates, it can choke children. Most parents are unaware of this danger and always argue ignorantly when stopped by road safety officials.

I have also observed that school buses that convey children don’t adhere to the rules of child road safety as they take children to and fro school without strapping them. Some school buses are not fit to ply the roads; some convey children to school without anybody to supervise the children and most times children even lap one another. In an effort to change this act of negligence by the schools,  Lagos state safety commission initiated a school safety project, which is aimed at ensuring school safety culture and compliance, school buses are not spared as steps are being taken to make sure that the school buses comply with the road safety rules or the school will be sanctioned . This is highly commendable and I urge them to keep up with the good work.

Government should as a matter of urgency ensure that laws which uphold road safety guidelines are extended to children. The federal road safety commission claims that it has laws that protect children on the road but it appears the law is not properly implemented.  Most Nigerians are ignorant about road safety of children, so it is necessary to take the awareness to the grassroots, so that everyone would be aware of it.

  • What makes women better dancers

    What makes women better dancers

Researchers may have discovered the secret to turning heads as a woman on the dance floor – and it turns out it is all in the hips.

Scientists at Northumbria University used motion-capture technology to record the movements of young women dancing to a drum beat.

Their movement patterns were then rendered as 39 computer avatars – removing all their physical features – before 200 people watched 15-second clips and rated their dance moves.

The study, published in the Scientific Reports journal, identified that those getting higher scores for their dancing exhibited three types of movement when they strutted their stuff – greater hip swing, more asymmetric movements of the thighs and intermediate levels of arm movement.

Report author Dr Nick Neave, associate professor of psychology at the university, said dance moves have two functions for women.

He told The New York Times: “One is, they’re showing off their reproductive quality, perhaps their hormonal status, to males.

“Another is, they’re showing off how good they are to female rivals.

“When you look at males and females walking, the key difference is, males have this shoulder swing and females have this hip swing.”

He added that asymmetric limb movements could also signal good motor control.

  • How to Manage Your Family Budget in Tough Times

How to Manage Your Family Budget in Tough Times

That the country is going through a recession is no longer news, but any parent can testify that children don’t know or understand what that means so meals have to made, the rent and utility bills have to be paid; in short the family wheels must continue to turn. Here are a few tips to help families survive these times.

Buy what you need not what you want

There are so many things people spend money on that can be avoided, things like Aso-Ebi, unnecessary socials, trips, in short anything you don’t need (like your life depends on it) can/ should be cut it out of your budget.

Buy the cheapest options for your usual expenditure

In buying basic necessities like foodstuff, toiletries, and utilities, ensure that you buy the cheapest version of what you need. For instance, if you love eating fish, go ahead and indulge yourself, only buy the most affordable option for your budget.

    Spend Less Than You Make

Learn to spend less than you earn especially when times are tough. Cancel your credit card and pay cash for purchases to avoid running up debt. If you have to go into debt to acquire things, it might be best to wait until things get better before buying big budget items.

    Ruthlessly Cut Down Waste

Most households have ways in which money is wasted; it could be food, utilities, shopping e.t.c. For instance take the time to carefully measure out food items into portions before cooking. Store leftover food in the fridge/ freezer. You can also incorporate left-overs in the next meal. For instance, if you have left over beans from an earlier meal, incorporate it into another meal. Also buy only what you can use, especially perishables. When foodstuffs go bad because they aren’t eaten in good time, money has been wasted.

Never put your Children In Schools You Can’t Afford

Quite a number of parents are guilty of this, its normal to want to give the best education, but it should be what you can afford. How do you know the school is beyond your means? If you are always terms behind in payment, then the school is beyond your means. Most parents who put their kids in high brow schools are only paying for atmosphere. So don’t get into debt simply for real estate, or to keep up with the joneses’.
