  • How Boko Haram’s sex slaves wind up as sex workers in Europe

How Boko Haram’s sex slaves wind up as sex workers in Europe

It’s minutes past 4:00 p.m. local time, and Sarah, as we’ll call her, has just returned to her tent in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at the outskirts Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s war-torn Borno state.

She had spent much of her day in the heart of town meeting with a woman who’s promising to take her to Italy and find her a job. The young girl, who said she was 17, hasn’t been told where she’ll be working once she arrives at her destination. Yet she isn’t bothered. All she wants is to get to Europe.

Sarah is not naïve. She knows that many of the girls who are taken from Nigeria to Italy end up as sex workers. She even suspects that will be the job she’ll be asked to do once she arrives in Europe, given the way her would-be benefactor has been communicating with her.

“She always tells me ‘you are a fine girl,’ whenever we are discussing,” she told The Daily Beast at the camp where she has been for about a year now. “She says it wouldn’t be difficult for a girl like me to find a job.”

Living a life of abuse is what Sarah has faced since 2015, the year Boko Haram militants invaded her compound in Bama, about 50 miles south-east of this city, and dragged her from her home. She says she was taken to the terrorists’ hideout in the Sambisa Forest where a number of jihadists took turns raping her.

Weeks after her abduction, she escaped from her captors in the middle of the night when those guarding the camp had fallen asleep. She walked for long hours before reaching a settlement from which she was able to make her way to Maiduguri.

But the difficult life in many IDP camps here, where food is hardly enough for everyone, forced Sarah to turn to prostitution to survive.

“I was looking for money to feed myself and to buy medicine as I kept falling ill,” she said. “Men don’t give money without first sleeping with you.”

Reports of female IDPs in Maiduguri prostituting for money and food have been on the rise for months.

A survey taken last September by NOI Polls, a Nigerian research group, indicated that almost 90 percent of people displaced by Boko Haram in the northeast of the country do not have enough to eat. The survey discovered that many women are trading sex for food and the freedom to move in and out of IDP camps.

State officials have been accused of stealing food rations, and also of raping and sexually exploiting women and girls living in the IDP camps in Maiduguri.

NOI Polls reported in the survey that 66 percent of 400 displaced people in the northeast said that camp officials sexually abuse the displaced women and girls.

Human Rights Watch in a report it released last October, that in July 2016 it documented sexual abuse, including rape and other exploitation of 43 women and girls living in IDP camps in Maiduguri.

Sarah is one of the many young girls who say they have suffered sexual abuse by men giving out aid in the camp.

The first time she had sex after arriving in Maiduguri was with a member of the city’s vigilante group who sometimes distributed food to displaced persons.

“I had to [agree to the man’s advances] because I thought he will stop giving me food if I didn’t.” She said. “He kept putting pressure on me to go to bed with him.”

After that first incident, Sarah continued to offer sex to those she thought had the money to pay, moving deep into the heart of Maiduguri to look for clients. It was in one of her outings that she met the woman who is promising to take her to Italy.

“She saw me enter a small restaurant to buy food and then came after me,” Sarah said. “She said she had been seeing me in the area for some time and was monitoring me.”

While Sarah is excited about travelling to Italy, she is anxious to find out what exact role she’ll be playing once she gets to Europe, and what those helping her achieve expect to gain in return. The teenager is likely to be deceived in the same way thousands of vulnerable girls like her have been tricked in the past.

Usually, Nigerian women are fooled into believing they’ll be given good jobs once they get to Europe. Often, traffickers take them to traditional shrines where they are forced to undergo a juju oath-swearing ritual that commits them to repay the money they owe to their smugglers on pain of death or insanity, and not to denounce them to the police.

Once in Europe, the women are told by their benefactors that they must work as prostitutes until they pay off debts ranging from $25,000 to $100,000, according to a number of girls who returned recently to Nigeria after working for years as prostitutes in Italy.

Should Sarah make it to Italy, she’ll be adding to the over 11,000 women who have crossed the Mediterranean within the last 13 months, of whom 80 percent go on to live a life of forced prostitution, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

They journey isn’t easy. The nearly 3,000-mile trip across the Sahel in pick-up trucks, in minivans and on motorcycles that will take Sarah to Libya’s Mediterranean coast usually takes months to complete, and migrants on this route face possible beatings, rape, and forced labour by criminal networks in North Africa (PDF). At the end of it, not everyone seeking to reach Europe is successful.

Recently, over a hundred female migrants voluntarily returned to Nigeria after being detained for several months in Libya by border authorities as they tried to get to Italy. Some of the returnees said they were abused by Libyan immigration officials while in detention. It took the intervention of the IOM for them to be freed returned home.

“Most of the young ladies in detention camp were raped by Libyan officials,” Bridget Akeama, who returned from Libya four months pregnant, reportedly told the News Agency of Nigeria. “If you refused their advances, it will be hell for you.”

Nearly all the women who arrived at the Lagos airport come from southern Nigeria, a predominantly Christian region that has for years been a hub for smugglers taking advantage of girls desperately in need of “lucrative” jobs. Figures show that 80 percent of women trafficked to Italy come from Benin City, Edo State, in the same region.

But Sarah’s impending move to Italy is an indication that traffickers have created a solid base in the northeast region where an eight-year-old insurgency has created a huge refugee crisis and made thousands of women vulnerable.

Stories of trafficking of women displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency began to circulate more than two years ago when the jihadists seized a part of northeast Nigeria about the size of Belgium, forcing hundreds of thousands people to flee to overcrowded IDP camps in relatively calm cities. The vulnerability of these women and poor structuring of these camps created an opening for traffickers to explore.

A report by Nigeria’s Abuja-based International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) published in 2015 alleged that hundreds of young girls have been trafficked from IDP camps, although most victims were from unregistered, makeshift camps established when official camps could no longer cope.

The report quoted an unnamed nurse as saying many children were brought to her hospital after being raped in the IDP camps, and it also alleged that refugees were being sold as unpaid domestic workers, raped repeatedly, and in some cases burned and wounded with knives.

One of the patients admitted to the hospital was a 15-year-old girl who said some government officials came to the camp she stayed in and took many young girls away and later sold them as slaves. She ended up in the house of a man whose brother repeatedly raped her.

As IDP camps offer little protection to inhabitants, there is growing concern that more young girls like Sarah will be exploited, a major concern for aid organisations and for the United Nations, which is offering extensive help in the region.

“Many [camps] are in fact the settings for violence, exploitation and abuse of the most vulnerable,” Chaloka Beyani, UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons, said in a statement at the end of his visit to Nigeria last year. “The situation of women and girls in IDP camps and conflict affected areas is of particular concern and requires urgent action.”

  • 3 Reasons you should not fund him.

Today we will be discussing a very contentious topic, “To fund or not fund”. It might seem like a tricky question but it is never a good idea to buy love, especially if you are a woman. Why on earth should a woman give a man (who is not even her husband) her money? Not a good idea at all! Back in the day, men took care of their wives and families, and ruled their households like mini fiefdoms. Times have changed, and women now make their own money, but men still expect us to submit, so what do we do? We submit, if only for the sake of peace. However, if a woman has to foot the bill, she has become the boss, not just a helpmate. So why do I think so?

The man was designed to be the head in every marital/amorous relationship, and if he is the leader, he should foot the bills (or at least a large part of it). Why? Because money is power, whoever has it controls the power dynamics of the relationship. In all my years, I am yet to come across a man who is happy to be fed or funded by a woman, they might date (or even marry) a woman for her money, but trust me more often than not they will find a less financially buoyant woman to spend their change on, so as to feel like men.

Giving a man your money puts you at risk of attracting gold diggers/gigolos. Only yesterday, I read the story of a divorced silver spoon celebrity chick. She said, “I really loved him, but when I had a financial challenge, he took off. Apparently, that was all he wanted.” Guess what, the guy in question is remarried to a younger woman today. Speaking further, she said, “I have never dated a man for money, however in another relationship; a man took my hard earned money, and ran.” Guess what? Her story is nothing new, I am yet to see an instance where the woman funded the relationship and it worked out. The only female relative I know who tried it put a man through university, clothed, housed and fed him, his mom, and siblings for years, while he was unemployed. When he finally got a job, she never set eyes again on him; after three kids.

You can never really tell if it is you he loves or your money. Modern females are educated and independent, but marriage demands that we submit to our man. How does a person submit to a man one is feeding? More often than not, such women become / are accused of being shrewish, and the men feel justified in taking off. What about an old friend of mine who dated a guy while she was putting herself through the university. She would feed him, and spend her heard earned savings on him, guess the first thing he did after he graduated? That’s right, he dumped her. Obviously he never loved her, only her money. My advice? Do yourself a favour, and find yourself a man who has a job. Oh, and just in case he attempts to turn you to his ATM; dump him.

  • Things stylish women never do

    Things stylish women never do

Every woman has her morning routine, the things you do from the time you get out of bed in the morning, until you head out the door to work. From taking a bath, tohitting the gym; meditating, or having a cup of tea, we all have our peculiar routine when it comes to starting a new day. But, one thing we all have no choice but get dressed for whatever lies ahead. With our constant daily to-do lists, it’s not unusual to spend an entire day running from responsibility to responsibility, which is why this year afunctional wardrobe is a must.

When it comes to the dos and don’ts of getting dressed, the most inspiring women share a common trait: They choose comfort and versatility when picking out their outfit.Whether that means never wearing heels, or staying away from anything too restrictive, here are a few dos and don’ts to note when getting ready.  We hope these tips will make dressing up in the morning that much easier.

Don’t: Wear Anything That’s Not Versatile Enough to Survive the Whole Day

One word that should define the modern woman’s morning outfit decisions should be comfort.  Strive for comfort at all times. For some, it may mean never wearing heels. For others it could be wearing platforms or wedges. And don’t forget that those sneakers are in right now.

Don’t: No visible panty lines please!

“No visible panty lines” is another important rule to keep in mind when preparing for the day.  That way you can do your work, or go about your business without worrying that you are scandalizing anyone, or giving a negative image.

    Don’t:  No overmatching.

And while picking the right underwear for the day ahead is crucial, another big no-go when getting dressed, being too matchy-matchy (except for denim on denim). Except you are doing the monochrome thing, your clothes, and accessories don’t necessarily have to always match, that is so old school.

    Don’t: Sacrificing comfort for glamour.

Always dress in pieces that make you comfortable. For some it may mean not to dressing too young, or flamboyantly. Its okay to wear trends, but not at the expense of comfort. For work, avoid pieces that are restrictive or uncomfortable, for the simple reason that they will just irritate you within an hour.

Don’t: Putting on makeup before getting dressed

When it comes to dressing for work, when getting ready in the morning, never put on makeup before getting fully dressed.

    Don’t: Wearing leggings to work

And whatever you do, never wear leggings to the office, except you are off to the gym. And when you do, wearing a G-string would be a good idea.

     Don’t: Wearing anything distracting

For busy professionals, and entrepreneurial women a busy schedule means that you are constantly on the go, it’s all about clothing that can get you through anything. Entrepreneurship leaves you much less time for everything else, so versatility and comfort become increasingly important filters for one’s personal style.  Avoid anything that distracts you from focusing on what’s important; instead choose to gravitate toward real, beautiful clothes that you can live and work in.

Don’t: Getting dressed without considering the weather

When it comes to morning rituals, one often overlooked factor is getting dressed without considering the weather. Walking to work every day means that being prepared is key to making through the day unscathed. So you can choose to consider  the weather forecast, or face the consequences at your own peril.

  • Actually, not all men are swine, 4 ways to know he’s not

Actually, not all men are swine, 4 ways to know he’s not

    A while ago a colleague mentioned in passing that men are only useful for having kids, and not much more I beg to differ, although there are a lot of not so acceptable guys out there, there are quite a number of good ones around. It is as the Yoruba saying goes, “If you decide to close your eyes to let a bad person pass, you might not see the good person when he/she does pass by.” So rather than continuing to think that all men are tarred with the same brush, it makes sense to be armed with tools to make the right choice. Here are four tips to help you decide whether or not he is a good catch;

    He really does love you

When I say love, I don’t mean it only in the romantic/erotic sense, but in the sense that the Latin language calls agape- unconditional, selfless love. A man who really loves you wants what is best for you; almost like the way a parent wants only the best for their kids. This kind of man will make sacrifices for you, simply because he wants what is best for you. Like Ada, whose husband allows her to pursue a career she loves, even though it took her away from home on holidays and Sundays at the start. Furthermore he supported her with tools and advice, even though the pay wasn’t all that great. At the end of the day her career took off, and she attributes her success to the support of a wonderful man.

He is interested in your happiness

A loving man wants his woman to be happy, even if it might cost him some discomfort, such a man does this simply wants you to be happy. Someone once told a another lady, let us call her Yemisi, “you will never be happy being only a housewife, your talents and gifts are such that you would never feel fulfilled until you pursue your dreams.” Fortunately, she was married to a man who recognized her gifts and allowed her to somehow juggle her marriage, home, and career. Fortunately for her, her man recognized that as well and gave her the opportunity to use her god given gifts and talents. Even though he had a successful and demanding career of his own, he gave her all the support she needed. This rare man often helped with the shopping, and the kids, made dinner for the family when he returned from work, as she often got him later than he did. She credits him for being ‘a real rock’.

    He treats you nicely

Women are moved by what they hear, while men are moved by what they see. A woman’s self-image can be made or marred by the way her man views, and treats her. If he treats her well, she will most likely have a positive self-image, if not, she will have a negative one. It’s the reason why women in abusive relationships have a poor self-image. They feel unhappy and unloved.  A man who disrespects you with his speech and attitude is an accident waiting to happen. Do yourself a favour and end the relationship for your own.

    He makes you better

No human being has the power to change another, but finding a good man is like wind to a kite. Just as the kite will definitely fly, the woman will. A good man will pick you up when you are down, push you when you are discouraged, and celebrate with you when you succeed. He never feels threatened by your success, in fact, when you succeed, it’s his success as well because he backed you all the way. Such guys help you write or rewrite your resume, help you find a job,and encourage you to write that exam or certification. When you a look at your life, it’s easy to say that your life is better because he is in it, whether or not he footed the bills.

  • Eight skin clearing remedies you should know

Eight skin clearing remedies you should know

Good skincare is the best way to avoid acne, blemishes and dark spots. It takes work and dedication to stick to your routine and maintain good skincare. Jumia Travel shares 8 skin-clearing remedies that will not only help you maintain good skin care, but are simple enough to implement routinely.

Mixture of raw honey and brown sugar

Mix 1 tablespoon of raw honey with 1 tablespoon of brown sugar in a small bowl. Mix them together well and then store in a glass jar with an airtight lid. The mixture should be kept at room temperature. Before you apply the mixture to your skin, wash your face well. Apply ½ tablespoon of the scrub to your wet skin. Gently massage the mixture in a circular motion and avoid getting it in your eyes. When you are done with the scrub, rinse your face with lukewarm water and pat dry with a towel. This remedy helps to remove dark spots.

Note that you should be careful with this remedy and use sparingly, as it can have a bleaching effect on the skin when it’s overdone.

    Aloe Vera

This is a highly nutritious plant that does wonders for the skin. It is easy to grow and is attractive enough to be used as a decorative item in your home. Aloe Vera is succulent; therefore it stores a lot of water within its leaves and only needs to be watered at least two or three times a month. Buying a potted aloe vera plant is also easy and rather inexpensive.

Use aloe vera regularly to reduce inflammation, and prevent bacteria from affecting your acne. Also, rub aloe vera on dark spots once or twice daily to reduce hyperpigmentation and clear dark spots.

    Vitamin E

Purchase liquid vitamin E. Dab the liquid onto the dark spots on your face. If you don’t have liquid vitamin E, buy vitamin E capsules. Open the capsules and mix with little water until a thin liquid is formed. This remedy provides the skin with plenty antioxidants to help even your skin tone.

    Sweet organic honey

First, rinse your face with warm water. Then, take a spoonful of organic honey and spread evenly on your face. Leave it on your face for 30 minutes, and then rinse with warm water. This brings a glow to your skin and helps to prevent acne.

    Jojoba Oil

This is an effective natural moisturizer. You can use a pipette to drop 5 to 6 drops of the oil on a cotton ball, then dab on your acne. The oil doesn’t clog your pores; rather it works to improve your natural oil balance.

    Cucumber

Cucumbers have nourishing, hydrating and astringent properties that help improve the overall appearance of the skin by repairing damaged skin cells, removing dead skin cells and adding a fresh glow to your skin. It helps to prevent acne and black spots.

To apply, you first cut a fresh cucumber into thick slices and then rub thoroughly all over your face. Leave it on overnight and rinse with warm water in the morning. You should try to do this daily before going to bed.

    Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Purchase a bottle of apple cider vinegar, then mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar together. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and apply on your face in a circular motion. Leave it on overnight and wash the area preferably with warm water in the morning. You should try to do this every night before going to bed. The acids present in the ACV exfoliate dead skin cells and reveals a fresh and healthy layer of skin cells. ACV is also an astringent and prevents your pores from getting infected and inflamed.

    Egg White and Lemon Mask

Gather and beat 1 egg white until it becomes frothy. Add juice from ½ a lemon to your egg white, and then mix together. Apply the mask to your face and leave on for 30 minutes. Gently rinse it off with warm water and apply a moisturizer on your skin.

Egg white helps to tighten your pores and remove built up dirt from your skin. Lemon not only exfoliates but brightens your skin, so you should therefore use sparingly to temper its bleaching effects.  Lemon is also a good source of alpha hydroxyl acids and vitamin C. Vitamin C helps to reduce hyper production of melanin, so aside using lemon for your mask, you should also consider eating food with high vitamin C content.

  • Eight ways to deal with sweaty armpits

Eight ways to deal with sweaty armpits

It can be very uncomfortable – even agitating – to get dressed, looking all smart and appealing, only for something as little as sweat under your arms to ruin it all. There is something unarguably embarrassing about having the underarm of your dress, blouse or shirt drenched in sweat, and it gets worse if it’s the only sweat-stained part of your clothing. Asides this, there is also the unpleasant odour resulting from such underarm sweating to deal with. It could all be a frustrating experience indeed.

Jumia Travel shares 8 ways to help you deal with sweaty armpits and avoid such uncomfortable situations.

Use the appropriate product for your problem

You can’t stop your body from perspiring because if your body stopped excreting sweat and toxins through the skin, you would die. You thus can only manage and try to control your bodily perspiration. One of the ways to do this is to use deodorants and topical anti-perspirants. Deodorants do little or nothing to stop underarm sweating; but they help to mask the odour. Deodorants that use gentle and natural ingredients will work well.

To avoid sweat stains, you can use commercial anti-perspirants that use aluminum chloride hexahydrate. They are effective in controlling the amount of sweat your armpits produce. Also, consider seeing a dermatologist to discuss possible prescription anti-perspirant products that can be advised for your use.

Note: It is important you apply these products properly for them to be effective. Deodorants or anti-perspirants should be applied to clean underarms, not already sweaty ones. It is best to apply these products first thing in the morning after your bath, and any other time after bathing. Always wash your underarms with clean water and soap (be thorough about it and dab with a towel until dry), then apply a thin layer of anti-perspirant or deodorant to your dry underarms. If you can’t wash your underarm with soap and water, alternate the use of a wet and dry cloth to clean your underarm until it’s dry.

    Use natural remedies

Though there are all-natural commercial deodorants and anti-perspirant products at your disposal, you can create your own natural ones. One of such natural remedies is to mix equal parts of baking soda and water to create a paste. Apply the paste on both of armpits and let it sit for 20 – 30 minutes, before rinsing off the mixture.

Another remedy to consider is using apple vinegar, or other malt vinegar, on your armpits to neutralize the armpit’s natural odour-causing bacteria. This helps to create a drying effect in your underarm, which helps you sweat less and stay dry. A mixture of lemon juice and tomato pulp can also be considered. You mix them together until a paste is formed, then you apply the paste in your underarms and allow to sit for 15 minutes.

    Practice good hygiene

Asides using products and remedies, managing and controlling underarm sweating require the practice of good body hygiene to aid the effectiveness of such products and remedies. It is important to shower regularly to keep your body clean and dry. You should shower your body, or at least your underarms, once or twice a day. If you are someone who remained active throughout the day, it is advisable to add to your morning shower and shower before bed so you can wash off the sweat produced during the day’s activities.

You should also shave your armpit hair regularly. This will help to prevent sweat from collecting in your armpits which helps to make sweat stains less pronounced and odours less prevalent. In addition, you should try to wash your shirts and dresses after every use or as often as possible. This will greatly help those dealing with underarm body odor. Washing your shirts and dresses often will keep bacteria from building over time and acting on the dried sweat to produce unpleasant odours.

Let your body cool down before you put clothes on

It is important to let your body cool down before you put clothes on, if not you may immediately start sweating. Even after you have just had a bath, you should learn to relax and let your body cool down before you put on clothes. Regardless of where you are rushing to, remember that it is better to take a few seconds to calm yourself down than skip that step and rush to your destination with an unsightly underarm sweat stain.

    Be selective about your clothing

Go for clothing made of natural, more breathable fabrics like cotton, wool, hemp, silk or linen, because of their looser weaves. The fibers of these fabrics help to absorb moisture well, make it possible for accumulated moisture to evaporate easily and are less inclined to trap heat and make your body sweaty. Some man-made fabrics like banbook, lyocell, modal and some microfiber fabrics can be considered because they function similarly to natural fabrics.

    Consider changing your clothes often

You can also consider changing your clothes often, or avoid wearing the clothes you intend to use for an outing around the house. You can keep a change of clothing handy from time to time.

    Layer your clothes

You can consider layering your clothes so sweat won’t come through to your outer cloth easily. It is important to choose the right clothing material for this. Breathable fabrics are the best choice. You should also keep these inner wears washed and cleaned regularly to avoid unpleasant odours.

    Manage stress and anxiety

Stress and anxiety tend to lead to excessive sweating and effusive underarm sweating. Practicing relaxation techniques, deep breathing and meditation exercises can help produce the calming effect needed to manage this situation.

  • Stop using these words to stop sounding foolish at work

Stop using these words to stop sounding foolish at work

You work in an environment where everyone seems to be well educated and smart, and so you feel the need to impress with your command of the English language (and impressive sounding words). So you throw them around in meetings, e-mails and important documents (such as resumes and client proposals), and they land, like fingernails across a chalkboard, on everyone who has to hear or read them.

No matter how talented you are or what you’ve accomplished, using words incorrectly can change the way people see you and forever cast you in a negative light. You may not think it’s a big deal, but if your language is driving people out of their minds you need to do something about it.

More often than not, it’s the words that we think we’re using correctly that wreak the most havoc, because we don’t even realize how poorly we’re coming across. After all, Talent Smart has tested the emotional intelligence of more than a million people and found that self-awareness is the area where most people score the lowest.

We’re all guilty of this from time to time, myself included. Some writers hire editors to review their articles before posting them online. It’s bad enough to have a roomful of people witness your mistakes, and something else entirely to stumble in front of 100,000 people!

    Often, it’s the words we perceive as being more “correct” or sophisticated that catch us by surprise when they don’t really mean what we think they do. These words have a tendency to make even really smart people stumble. Some examples;

    Ironic vs. Coincidental

A lot of people get this wrong. If you break your leg the day before going on vacation, that’s not ironicit’s coincidental (and bad luck). Ironic has several meanings, all of which include some type of reversal of what was expected. Verbal irony is when a person says one thing but clearly means another. Situational irony is when a result is the opposite of what was expected.

    1. Henry, master of situational irony in “The Gift of the Magi,” Jim sells his watch to buy combs for his wife’s hair, and she sells her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch. Each character sold something precious to buy a gift for the other, but those gifts were intended for what the other person sold. That is true irony.

    Affect vs. Effect

To make these words even more confusing than they already are, both can be used as either a noun or a verb.

Let’s start with the verbsAffect means to influence something or someone; effect means to accomplish something. “Your job was affected by the organizational restructuring” but “These changes will be effected on Monday.”

As a noun, an effect is the result of something: “The sunny weather had a huge effect on sales.” It’s almost always the right choice because the noun affect refers to an emotional state and is rarely used outside of psychological circles: “The patient’s affect was flat.”

    Lie vs. Lay

We’re all pretty clear on the lie that means an untruth. It’s the other usage that confuses most of us. Lie also means to recline: “Why don’t you lie down and rest?” Lay requires an object: “Lay the book on the table.” Lie is something you can do by yourself, but you need an object to lay.

It’s more confusing in the past tense. The past tense of lie is — you guessed it — lay: “I lay down for an hour last night.” And the past tense of lay is laid: “I laid the book on the table.”

    Accept vs. Except

These two words sound similar but have very different meanings. Accept means to receive something willingly: “His mom accepted his explanation” or “She accepted the gift graciously.” Except signifies exclusion: “I can attend every meeting except the one next week.”

To help you remember, note that both except and exclusion begin with ex.

    Bring vs. Take

Bring and take both describe moving something or someone from one place to another, but the correct usage depends on the speaker’s point of view. Somebody brings something to you, but you take it to somewhere else: “Bring me the mail, then take your shoes to your room.”

Just remember, if the movement is toward you, use bring; if the movement is away from you, use take.

    In conclusion

English grammar can be tricky, and, a lot of times, the words that sound right are actually wrong. • UNICAL and the triumph of change

For most Nigerians, President Muhammedu Buhari’s (PMB) mantra of “change” in attitudes and behavioral dispositions in private homes, offices and elsewhere is a mere slogan and more like a sound of distant echoes. Those who benefit immensely from the old, corrupt order of handling official business in Nigeria are most stoutly opposed to this #ChangeBeginsWithMe. Professor Zana Akpagu the Vice Chancellor (VC) of University of Calabar (UniCal) seemed caught up in this web of oddities in his dogged attempts to run the institution transparently for positive results. Since his assumption to office last year, his desire to instill financial discipline, transparency and accountability in the administration of the varsity instantly and expectedly pitched him against the university Bursar, Mr. Peter Agi. It is clear that Agi who had operated as a bursar in the university for years was perceptively too glued to the old “smart” ways of milking government establishments and could not condone preachments to discard such backward habits. So, campaigns for financial sanity and the aversion for official laxity crusaded by Prof. Akpagu berthed at the ex-bursar’s doorstep and the only natural option was to frustrate and resist it. But like a lone sailor on the high sea, Agi’s resistance to “change” also eclipsed any sympathy for him from the disparate segments of the university community which he had administered like an emperor. When Agi’s unholy interface with the VC became an open conflict, the university management first suspended him and eventually commuted the suspension to termination of appointment after an inquest into his official dealings. And of all groups within the university environment, it was a segment of students that Agi, who was accused of high-handedness, negligence, impersonation and other acts of malfeasance, hired to stage a protest in his support. But the ex-bursar got it all wrong. His rented supporters were simultaneously and massively countered by another set of students genuinely convinced about the accusations on him. And almost all workers in the varsity also poured out in numbers to give fillip to the anti-Agi protests, and register their resentment. Not satisfied, embattled Agi approached the National Industrial Court sitting in Calabar to challenge his suspension and eventual sack by the institution. Justice Nneka M. Esowe dismissed Agi’s suit as premature, following his refusal to comply with the internal dispute resolution mechanisms as spelt out by University of Calabar Law no. 80 of 1979. By implication, just like there is no hiding place for a bad soul, Agi lost both head and tail. The point must not be missed that the ex-bursar immersed himself into the mess because of greed and haughtiness serviced by impunity. When the heat became too much for him to bear, he resorted to the tricks of blackmail and counter-accusations against his superior officer and Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Akpagu. But till date, the ex-bursar has not as much as convinced even a student to back him anymore. Even those he rented with money have shunned and deserted him. He has dumped himself in a circle as the court has directed him to face the internal conflict resolution mechanism of the university. He had earlier turned down appearance before a panel set up by the university management to clear himself over allegations of fraud and embezzlement of the university funds under the pretext that the case was in court. Curiously though, why should Mr. Peter Agi, a principal officer of the university, who handles a sensitive duty, such as the administration of the university finances, be so ignorant or chose to ignore the varsity’s internal laws which is the first point of adjudication over an internal matter, but preferred to rush to court? As testimony of a man caged by his own traps, Agi approached two court of concurrent jurisdiction over the same matter. He took his case to the National Industrial Court, Calabar and also approached the same court in Uyo. What was the intention of stampeding the courts with the same case? It confirms the actions of a guilty mind, which pursues everything at sight in the hope of getting succour. A peep into Agi’s official malfeasance as decided by the panel instituted by university management reveal an intolerable level of official negligence, absenteeism, official snobbery and glaring attempts to defraud the institution laced in criminal acts such as impersonation of the VC, who is the Chief Accounting officer of the university by consenting to the varsity’s final financial approvals outside the gamut of his official powers. He frustrates payment of TETFUND contractors, even after completion of jobs, certifications issued and payments approved. UniCal Registrar, Mr. Moses Abang, in a letter conveying the termination of Mr. Peter Agi’s appointment lucidly stated thus: “Management observed that you have been impersonating the vice-chancellor on the CBN e-payment platform by making final approvals and payments, a duty that is the responsibility of the Vice Chancellor, who is the Chief Accounting Officer of the university. “Again, you absented yourself from office without requesting any of your deputies to act for you, thus creating a vacuum in the administration of the Bursary.” But all Agi could muster courage to do was to incite a segment of students and cash-and-carry Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), operating under some funny strange identity as League of Civil Society Organizations to issue a watery statement at a Press Conference in Abuja alleging excesses on the part of Akpagu and invoking neglect of some sort of due process in the termination of the ex-bursar’s appointment. Agreed that the Akpagu hijacked the professional and legal powers of the sacked Bursar as argued by the pro-Agi campaigners through the retention of the consultant for the collection of the university’s levies, why was Agi opposed to the retention? Had he just found the consultants unworthy and incapable under the tenure of Professor Akpagu? The former bursar had worked with the consultant for years under an era in Nigeria where corruption was celebrated and rewarded. Therefore, Agi was gripped by the phobia of exposure of his shady deals, upon the emergence of Akpagu as Vice Chancellor, since he preaches transparency and accountability in running the affairs of the university. Within the academic community, Agi has lost every strand or voice of support. It means he had operated like a demigod in the institution, but the preceding VC Prof. James Epoke consented to his excesses until Akpagu, widely admired on campus with the sobriquet of “Mr. Change” came on board and decided to check his official impunity and sleaze. Throughout the interface with the VC, voices of angst and resentment have swelled against the ex-bursar, who has transformed into a thug. He threatened the life of his subordinate worker as disclosed in a petition alleging threat to life sent to the police in Calabar by the protocol officer of the University, Mr. Godwin Nyiam. And the crux of the matter in this instance too, also revolved around some alleged improper financial dealings connected with office of the bursar which the petitioner was privy. It is more discerning or proper to guess why Agi wanted to discharge the former consultants and appoint new ones against the advice of his boss. UniCal cannot ground to a halt by the wishes of Mr. Bursar. The fate and destiny of thousands of students seeking knowledge in the university depends on the excellent functionality of the university and Agi and his cohorts cannot be allowed to frustrate it. But Prof. Akpagu should neither be deterred nor distracted in fighting corruption to enthrone sanity in the university. And the banal arsenals of blackmail and the failed trial in court of public opinion as manifested by Agi and his gang are the numerous ways corruption fights back and they are known to all. Akpagu should not deviate from the template set by President Buhari at the federal level. The President himself is also receiving the same missiles from these anti-progressive elements, who have become paranoid to the extreme of wishing him dead. Mr. President is canvassing for the restoration of strong public institutions as against all-powerful individuals, as portrayed by Mr. Peter Agi who flouts official directives with impunity and runs the institution’s bursary department like his personal fiefdom and thinks crying foul when he is relieved of his job would cleanse him of the sins. A Vice Chancellor whose actions and policies inspire both students and workers to massively rise in his defence is really an asset anywhere because it is not easy to influence any of these interests groups in the university community to back your cause. It is the triumph of the “change”mantra over evil.

  • Things to know before you buy a smartphone

Things to know before you buy a smartphone

It’s important to keep certain things in mind before buying a new smartphone

This is so you can make the best decision and maximise your user experience. Smartphones have, over time, become a sort of indispensable companion, especially because of their use in helping to stay on top of important email and social updates.

With this, it’s safe to say that choosing the right smartphone for yourself is indeed a big deal.

Jumia Travel shares information on 6 things you should know and consider before you buy a new smartphone.

    THE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)

When your budget for a new smartphone is able to get you either an iPhone with the Apple iOS, or a smartphone with the Android Operating System, the burden is then about which of the two to choose. Some people say the Apple iOS is better than the Android OS, but the truth is, it depends.

The Apple iOS on all iPhones is an easy to use OS (Operating System) and you can be sure of getting the hottest and best apps first, along with the timeliest software updates, tight security and very rare malware problems.

However, with the Android OS you have more hardware choice and more control over your user experience. The Android OS is easier to customise as you can change almost anything you want and file transfer is also easier than that of the Apple iOS. In the end, it depends on which OS best suits your needs and taste.

Not forgetting the Windows OS, Windows is also a good choice if you are looking for an OS with good performance because it’s tailored to offer better performance than the Apple iOS and Android OS.

    THE SCREEN SIZE

Smartphones with a below 5-inch screen should be sourced if one-hand-use is important to you and you are looking for a portable smartphone you can perform quick tasks with. However, if you like to watch videos, play video games, browse online (especially for reading text on a website), basically if you use your phone mainly for media rather than quick tasks, a smartphone with a large screen size (5-inch screens and above) is better for you.

    THE CAMERA

This is unarguably the most important smartphone feature for most smartphone buyers. When buying a smartphone, consider the camera specs like megapixels (the larger the better), aperture (the lower the better) and, if it’s within your budget, try to get one with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). If you are unable to get one with OIS, it’s fine, simply consider mainly the megapixels and aperture of the camera.

    THE RAM AND PROCESSOR

For CPU results, speedier operations and better multi-tasking on your smartphone, you should consider both the RAM and processor of the smartphone. For example, a good RAM and processor will reduce, if not completely eliminate, the incidence of your smartphone ‘hanging’ while in use.  However these days RAM is becoming a more reliable indicator of a phone’s performance than the processor because sometimes a dual-core processor can be far more powerful than an eight-core processor.

Smartphones with 2GB RAM and above are recommended. Smartphones with very limited RAM are the cause of rudimentary performance problems. 1GB and 1.5GB RAM can be quite tight and lead to performance problems on your smartphone. However, if 1GB and 1.5GB RAM smartphones are the ones within your budget, you can make the best of this by downloading very few apps and refraining from opening multiple apps at the same time. You should close every app you open the moment you are done using them.

smartphone battery lifeMulti-core processors like the dual-core, quad-core, hexacore and octa-core processors are recommended when sourcing for a good smartphone. But be careful, powerful processors tend to drain the battery of your smartphone. If you will only perform simple tasks with your phone such as communicating through text messages, making calls, checking emails or browsing the internet, a smartphone with a low but reasonable processing power, like the dual-core or quad-core processor, is good for you.

    BATTERY LIFE

When buying a new smartphone you have to make sure the smartphone has good battery life. Usually, smartphones with a 3000mAh battery are recommended if durability is important to you. You can settle for one above 2000mAh, but avoid going for one lower than 2000mAh.

    STORAGE OPTIONS

Most smartphones come with 4GB to 64GB internal storage. 16GB internal storage is usually recommended when buying a smartphone because after system partitions are considered, the user accessible storage ends up being as low as 8GB. However, if a 16GB smartphone is outside your budget, you can settle for an 8GB smartphone which you can couple with an external storage device like the microSD memory card.

  • Five causes, remedies for back pain

Five causes, remedies for back pain

It is fortunate that episodes of back pain heal with time. However, back pain can be a temporary but recurrent pain that is indeed a very uncomfortable occurrence. It has a way of interfering with your daily routine, aside making you very uncomfortable. It is important to identify the causes of back pain and know the remedies to help deal with it.  To help you, Jumia Travel shares five causes and remedies for back pain.

    Poor posture

This is one of the major causes of upper and lower back pain. This pain usually occurs along with neck pain or shoulder pain. Poor posture puts on strain on sensitized muscles and soft tissues leading to increased tension in the muscles which most times results in pain.

Remedy: The simple remedy for this is to correct your sitting and standing posture to help alleviate some of the muscle tension causing you back pain. Avoid slouching or hunching your back when sitting. Also try to do exercises that strengthen your core muscles, buttock muscles, check muscles, neck muscles, rear-shoulder muscles and back extensions (exercises like bridges, back extensions, side-lying stretches, planks etc.), this will help improve your posture.

When standing, balance your weight evenly on both feet (don’t lean on one leg), keep your shoulders and back relaxed, pull in your abdomen, keep your feet apart and straight but knees relaxed, and try not to tilt your head forward, backward or sideways.

    Strenuous physical work and exercise

Jobs that involve lifting, pushing, pulling or twisting with the low back can cause injury and back pain. These jobs especially affect the lower back and cause lower back pain.

Also, there are some physical exercises that contribute to back pains. Exercises like the ‘touch-your-toes’ hamstring stretch, hurdler’s stretch, leg raises, sit-ups, crunches and high impact aerobic exercises.

Remedy: For physically strenuous jobs, try to avoid heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or twisting your low back as much as you can. If you must do heavy lifting try to bend your legs and keep your back straight when lifting something heavy. Also, you should often do exercises to stretch and strengthen your core, back, neck, shoulder and buttock muscles.

For strenuous exercises, avoid strenuous physical exercises like the ones mentioned above and swap them for more back-friendly exercises like side-lying stretches, reverse curl-ups, swimming, walking etc.

    Mentally stressful work

Mentally stressful work tends to cause stress and anxiety which are two of the most common causes of back pain. Stress and anxiety drastically increase muscle tension, which in turn increases pain. The back contains a variety of muscles that tense during stress and anxiety, which increases pain and leads to a mild or severe back pain in the upper and lower back.

In addition to this, anxiety and stress also cause changes in behaviors that lead to back pain. These include changes in posture (there is a tendency to slouch more, hunch your back etc.), inactivity (there is the tendency of decreased healthy physical activity and mobility) and hypersensitivity (stress and anxiety tends to make you more sensitive to physical sensations which makes them feel more severe and harder to ignore).

Remedy: Stretching your muscles regularly, watching your posture, occasional massages, exercising and being mobile can help reduce stress or anxiety-related pains in your back. But for a more permanent treatment, you should learn ways to cope with stress and anxiety. This can be done by identifying your stressors and what triggers your stress and anxiety, then finding ways to avoid it if you can or accept and adapt to it if you can’t. Taking breaks can also help, relaxation and meditation exercises also included. Try to eat a balanced diet, sleep well and limit caffeine or alcohol.

    Pregnancy

During a healthy pregnancy, women usually gain between 25 to 35 pounds which the spine has to support. This can lead to lower back pain for most women during pregnancy. Also, the weight of the baby and uterus puts pressure on blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back, which in turn increases pain and leads to back pain. In addition to these, posture changes, hormone changes, muscle separation and stress during pregnancy can also contribute to back pain during pregnancy.

Remedy: The good thing is that the back pain experienced during pregnancy gradually eases before birth, however things like safe exercises for pregnant women, applying heat and cold compress to your back at intervals, working on improving your posture during pregnancy, avoiding high-heeled shoes, and not sleeping on your back can help treat and alleviate the back pain.

    Sedentary lifestyle

A sedentary lifestyle tends to cause increased stiffness and weakened muscles which can cause or worsen back pain. Being sedentary keeps you inactive and makes you miss out on the benefits of regular physical activity which helps to nourish spinal discs, soft tissues and ligaments.

Remedy: Perform regular strengthening exercises, stretching and low-impact aerobic exercises for the muscle of the back and abdomen to help provide better support for your spine. Move around more and engage in healthy physical activities.
