10 things to know about ‘Muharram’ Islamic New Year

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, on Tuesday, declared Wednesday, July 19, 2023, as the first day of Muharram 1445H.

Sultan, the head of the Nigerian National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs had earlier urged Muslims to look out for the new moon of Muharram on Monday, July 17, 2023.

In a statement, Sultanate Council of Sokoto said: “Due to the lack of positive sighting report of crescent in Nigeria, Wednesday 19th July 2023 has been declared the first day of MUHARRAM 1445H.”

Muharram holds profound historical and religious significance for Muslims.

    Below are ten things you should know;

Muharram also known as Al Hijri or Islamic New Year is going to begin on July 19, 2023 following the sighting of the new moon.

Al-Muharram is the first month in the Islamic calendar and is considered to be a sacred month.

The day holds great importance among Muslims and is observed with utmost devotion.

The month is observed for 29 or 30 days.

Muslims are instructed to observe voluntary fasting on the 9th and 10th days of the month, known as Tashua and Ashurah.

The tenth day of Muharram known as Ashura is commemorated by all Muslims with great sorrow and despair to recognise the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his loyal companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The battle symbolised the struggle between justice and oppression.

The literal meaning of Muharram is ‘prohibition’. During the month of Muharram, Muslims refrain from joyous events and celebrations as a mark of respect and homage to Imam Hussain’s sacrifice.

Besides, the month of Muharram recognises the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina.

It serves as a time of reflection, mourning, and recommitment to the principles of Islam. Through these observances, Muslims reaffirm their dedication to upholding truth, justice, and compassion in their lives and communities.

Muharram teaches Muslims important lessons of bravery and unwavering commitment to justice. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility to stand against oppression, uphold the truth, and fight for social justice.

Five tips on how to survive during flood

Living in flooded areas can pose a threat to health and life. Even after preparing for flood by securing a flood insurance policy and setting up your home to reduce property damage from flood. There is more to do to ensure you and your family are safe.

    Escape flooded areas fast

In a flooding situation where the water level is increasing, make sure you evacuate that flooded area fast. Do not scramble about saving your valuables yet; instead, have your safety kits with you along with a means to listen to the latest developments on the flooding situation.

    Stay updated on flooding information

While escaping the flooded area, have with you a battery-powered radio to listen to updates on the situation. Assume floodwater is dangerous

For your safety and that of your family assume areas with floodwater are dangerous. This is because the flood may have carried waste products like sewage or refuse. Flood water may contain oil which may explode when in contact with light. Some may even be charged with the electrical current; animals that have lost their habitat may be in the water too. So, avoid it as much as you can, including a moving one as you may not be able to survive the tide.

    Stay on high grounds

It is easy to drown in flooded areas as the depth cannot be determined prior to entering it. To avoid the hazards of floodwater, stay on high grounds. If the flood caught you in your home, stay abreast of the water by either ascending your staircase to the highest position; finding your way to the rooftop or arranging items to raise you higher in the water.

Avoid fallen electrical poles and wires

Avoid stepping on wires or moving over a fallen electrical pole. They may still be charged with electrical current, causing electrocution and perhaps, death.

The aforementioned are the first-aid tips to adopt before the emergency team in your locality arrives or the floodwater recedes.

  • How to join, use Threads, Twitter’s rival

How to join, use Threads, Twitter’s rival

Threads is a new platform designed as an alternative to Twitter.

On July 6, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, launched Threads to rival Elon Musk’s Twitter.

The launch comes days after Musk announced that a temporary limit has been imposed on the number of posts users can read daily on Twitter.

He said verified users will have access to 6,000 posts daily, while unverified and new users will be allowed to read 600 and 300 posts, respectively.

This development sparked mixed reactions. Several rival apps have emerged but most platforms have not been able to dethrone Twitter.

Threads has signed up more than 100 million users in less than five days, according to Online data service Quiver Quantitative.

This Twitter-like network lets users post short text blurbs along with images and videos.

Meanwhile, Musk is locked in a rivalry with Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg.

Musk has threatened to sue Meta for stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, claims denied by the company, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp.

Unlike other Twitter alternatives – Bluesky, Hive, Spill and others, Threads runs on a pre-existing social media network — specifically Instagram and Facebook.

To sign up for Threads, you first need an Instagram account. If you already have one, then all you need to do is download the Threads app from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. Sign in with your IG account when prompted.

Threads comes with features similar to those of Twitter, such as liking, reposting, and deciding who can reply to conversations.

Users can also follow and connect with others who share similar interests, and build a loyal following of their own to share their ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.

However, the new app, unlike Twitter, does not have an edit button or a direct message (DM) feature for now. It is however superior in terms of word length – 500 counts; and video length of 5 minutes.

    How to get started:

    1. Join Instagram if you don’t have an account – Threads is only available to Instagram users as it taps directly into your account. If you don’t yet have an Instagram profile and still want to take Threads for a spin, browse to the Instagram website and click the Sign up link. At the next page, add your name, email address, and a password and then click Sign up.

    2. Sign in at the Threads app – Posting and responding to posts on Threads is supported only through the mobile app, though you can access and read posts for specific accounts via the website.

    3. Create your profile – The Profile screen then asks you to confirm your name, write a bio, and then add a link to a website. If you already have that information in Instagram and want to use it in Threads, just tap the button for Import from Instagram. Otherwise, add those details manually.

    4. Go private or public – The Privacy screen asks if you want to make your profile public or private. With a public profile, anyone can see, share, and interact with your content. With a private profile, only your approved followers can see and interact with your content.

    5. Select the accounts to follow

    6. Join and view the main feed

    7. Access Threads at the website – https://www.threads.net/

  • Seven tips to sail through rainy season

Seven tips to sail through rainy season

Unlike farmers who receive rainy season with jubilation, many Nigerians are worried over the discomfort they undergo during the period such as the peeling of leather bags; ruined leather shoes; soiled whites or soaked wear, smelly hairdo from contact with rain, splash of puddles by passing vehicles and other avoidable experiences.

Here are tips on how to get through the rainy season:

    1. Stock up on rain-proof gears: Stock up on rain-proof gears to help sail through the rainy season without a slight ruffle to your feathers. These items include a portable umbrella that can fit into your handbag, bag-pack, or suitcase; a shower cap to prevent the rain from ruining your hairdo and a foldable raincoat that can be neatly tucked in your bag and kept at arm’s length.

    2. Wear footwear built for the rainy season

Rain can be unpredictable sometimes. Adopt the Girls’ Guide motto by being prepared at all times. Avoid getting caught in the rain with your cool sneakers, nice heels or cover shoes by either trusting your instinct to wear waterproof walking shoes or footwear that are built for rain or have a spare one in your bag. They include crocs, rubber sandals, kito shoes, or rain boots if you leave in flooded areas.

    3. Grab a water-friendly and spacious bag

Rain has no care for your sleek bag. When it’s time, it pours. So avoid ruining your leather bag by swapping to waterproof or water-friendly ones. Some leather bags are built for the rainy season and stylish rubber bags too are best shopping options in this period. Also, ensure that your choice bag is spacious enough to take rain-proof kits when the rain begins.

    4. Have in-handy wear for rainy season

As if it is not enough to endure the chilly weather, many corporate workers still crouch behind their desks all day under full blast-Air Conditioner; even the business men and women are not left out as they expose themselves to cold too. Have thick wears like cardigan or sweaters close by. White clothes are not advisable, especially in muddy areas, use pop socks and long sleeve blouse too. Make sure you can slip out of them without looking odd because heat sometimes surfaces later in the day after it has rained before.

    5. Boost immune system with balanced diet

Research has shown that cold weakens the immune system and cold weather constitutes rainy periods. Microorganisms attack more at this time of the year. To fortify your immune system against attacks,  be particular about the hygiene of the food you consume and cook with green pepper too. Take fruits that contain vitamin C like orange and pineapple. Also, take vegetables and lots of water.

    6. Wade off mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are more rampant during rainy seasons as they breed in clogged drainages and gutters and puddles. Ensure your environment is clean. Install mosquito net; use mosquito repellant cream and spray. Avoid wearing black to bed because it attracts mosquitoes.

    7. Include getting a car in your plan

Gone are those days when cars are seen as a luxury. When a heavy downpour meets you riding in your car, then you will be glad you have it. However, it is not enough to get a car as maintenance is also pivotal. Ensure there are no holes under your car for water to penetrate and ensure the wiper functions well to clear the windscreen.

Practise these tips during the rainy season and you might just join the train of those who jubilate when the period approaches. Stay fresh!

  • Five tomato substitutes you can cook with

Five tomato substitutes you can cook with

There is rising anxiety over the worsening scarcity of tomatoes and peppers in most parts of the country.

Consumers across the country have started lamenting the scarcity and high prices of tomatoes.

If you’re looking for tomato substitutes, there are several options you can use to add a similar flavour or texture to your dishes.

Here are five tomato substitutes that you can cook with

    *Red Bell Peppers:

Red bell peppers are an excellent substitute for tomatoes, especially when it comes to flavor and color. They share a similar sweetness and provide a vibrant red hue to your dishes. Roast or sautéed red bell peppers can be used in sauces, stews, soups, and salads as a replacement for tomatoes.

     *Tomato paste:

One of the easy substitutes is tomato paste. Tomato paste is a thick, concentrated form of tomato puree that is often used in recipes that call for tomatoes.

    *Carrots and Beets:

When you’re looking for a tomato substitute in recipes like marinara sauce or tomato-based soups, a combination of carrots and beets can work wonders. Grated or blended carrots and beets provide a rich color and a subtle sweetness that can replace the flavors of tomatoes.

    *Canned Pumpkin:

Canned pumpkin can be used as a tomato substitute in certain recipes, especially in dishes like chili or soups. While it won’t mimic the exact flavor of tomatoes, it provides a creamy texture and a slightly sweet taste that can be appealing in many savory dishes.

    Tamarind Paste:

Tamarind paste is a fantastic alternative for adding a tangy and slightly sour taste to dishes that typically call for tomatoes. It works well in dishes like Indian curries, chutneys, and some Mexican salsas. Tamarind paste can be mixed with water to achieve the desired consistency.

Remember that each substitute may alter the taste and texture of your dish slightly, so it’s essential to experiment and adjust the quantities based on your preferences and the specific recipe you’re working with. Additionally, some recipes may not be as suitable for certain substitutes, so it’s best to tailor your choices to the dish you’re preparing.

  • Ten things to know about Day of ‘Arafah

Ten things to know about Day of ‘Arafah

As millions of Muslims all over the globe observe the Day of ‘Arafah today, below are ten things you should know about the day considered the holiest day of the Islamic Hijri lunar year:

    • The Day of ‘Arafah (Yawm Al-‘Arafah), also called the Day of the Standing (Yawm Al-Waqf), is significant to Muslims because it is the holiest day of the Islamic Hijri lunar year (just as Laylat Al-Qadr, the Night of Empowering Decree in Ramadan, is the holiest night of the Islamic year).
    •  It is the ninth day of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah, the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar. It occurs on the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah (and its surrounding religious waymarks) which Muslims are obligated to perform at least once in their lifetimes, if able.
    •   It is the day God perfected the religion of Islam.
    • It is the day the Prophet bore witness three times before the believers and God that he had successfully completed the divine mission of His messengership: To convey God’s message of the Quran and Islam to humanity.
    •  It is the day God bestowed the completion of His divine favor upon the Muslims, and for humanity. It is a day of immense forgiveness when Allah sets many people free from the Fire. Even if you are not standing on the Plains of ’Arafat, you can still seek Allah’s forgiveness from your own home, workplace, or local masjid.

    •   On the 9th Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims travel to the plains of ’Arafat, where they will combine their Dhuhr and Asr prayers and then spend the entire day making du’a. They will stand until sunset facing the Qiblah and seeking forgiveness for their sins.
    • While Pilgrims do not fast on the Day of ‘Arafah, Muslims who are not making Hajj are strongly urged (in Islamic Law, fiqh, it is codified as mustaḥabb, highly desirable) to fast this day. The Prophet said of this act of worship, that is, fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah for those not present at Hajj ‘atones for the sins of the preceding and coming year’ (Muslim).
    • It is the day of the Prophet’s Farewell Pilgrimage(Ḥajj Al-Wada‘) and his celebrated farewell address (Khutbah Al-Wadâ‘) to all the believers until the end of time, which took place on a Friday, the Muslim weekly communal day of Congregational Prayer (Jumu‘ah), during which the previously cited revelation came down.
    • The Day of ‘Arafah is the Hajj in itself. So said the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him: “Al-Hajj ‘Arafah,” meaning “‘Arafah is the Hajj” (Ahmad). Without observing it in its proper place and time, there is no Hajj. This means that all other aspects and rites of Hajj have some lawful way to make up for missing or modifying them or factors that may excuse one from them.
    •  For those who are able to, giving an extra Qurbani (sacrifice where an animal- a goat, sheep, cow, or camel is slaughtered) like the Prophet (saw) is an excellent way to gain reward on the day of ’Arafah. Not only will you be reviving a forgotten Sunnah, you will also be doubling your impact by feeding even more families a rare meal with meat during the days of Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).
  • Five Chelsea strikers who misfired

    Five Chelsea strikers who misfired

Chelsea football club has had many strikers who didn’t live up to expectations in recent times. Here are five of them that misfired.

    1. Romelu Lukaku

Topping the list is Belgian striker and Serie A goal poacher, Romelu Lukaku. He made his return to England in the 2021/22 season regaining his form at Inter Milan, scoring 64 goals in 95 games to win the Scudetto for Milan that season.

However, his return didn’t prove to be as his thoughts because he was only able to record 15 goals in 44 matches.

    2. Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres’ Chelsea career wasn’t a good one from the start. His debut was a defeat to old teammates at Liverpool. He failed to score in his first 13 games, even playing with Didier Drogba, he still wasn’t able to pick form.

Managers from Carlo Ancelotti to Jose Mourinho struggled to accommodate him.

    3. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Despite his blistering performance at Arsenal, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang He joined Barcelona in a bid to continue his good goal-scoring and ease himself from the troubles that led to his exit from the England side.

However, he left Barcelona and joined Chelsea to have more playing time and re-unite with former coach Thomas Tuchel, but unfortunately for him, Tuchel was sacked before he could get to his full potential and he has since then been under the shadows in Chelsea recording just 3-goals in 22-apps across all competitions.

    4. Alvaro Morata

A return of 24 goals in 48 starts looks great and was up to the task. However, he missed a penalty on his debut that cost Chelsea the Community Shield. He didn’t perform to expectations as he got more cards than goals in the second half of last season and tge biggest disappointment for him was losing his place to Frenchman Oliver Giroud.

    5. Kai Havertz

Yes, he won them a Champions League final and the claims are that he wasn’t a real striker but a converted nine but the bones of contention are he has always played as a striker.

Considering the huge amount of money he was bought for by Chelsea, (£72m) the English side had high hopes of him delivering up to their expectations, but it has not been like that.

Kai Havertz was only able to register 32 goals in 139 matches for Chelsea and is on the verge of joining Arsenal this transfer window.

Apparently, Kai Havertz is also considered as one of Chelseas’ strikers who underperformed.
