FULL LIST: 10 Most affordable Nigerian states to live in 2025

Nigeria’s cost of living varied widely across states in August 2025, with some regions offering significantly lower expenses for households and businesses.

From lower rent to cheaper food prices, these places offer a better chance to manage your budget, whether you’re a young professional, a retiree, or just want a break from high expenses.

According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), several states maintained a slower pace of price increases compared to the national average, making them more affordable destinations.

Below are the 10 most affordable Nigerian states to live in 2025

    1. Zamfara – 11.8%

Zamfara became Nigeria’s most affordable state, with headline inflation dropping to 11.8% and food inflation plunging to just 3.3%. Improved food supply, security, and market access drove the gains, backed by large-scale distribution of seeds, fertilizers, and farm inputs. Agriculture remains the backbone, with over 85% of residents dependent on farming.

    2. Anambra – 14.2%

Headline inflation fell sharply from 20.3% to 14.2%, but food inflation rose to 23.4%. Gains came from lower non-food costs through digital payment rollouts and water boreholes, but food transport disruptions from fuel scarcity lifted grocery prices.

    3. Enugu – 14.2%

Enugu saw the steepest headline inflation drop (22.5% → 14.2%), yet food inflation surged to 26.9%. Cheaper housing and transport supported affordability, but tomato blight and supply delays spiked food costs. The state launched wide-ranging farm input programs and revived agro-industrial projects to strengthen long-term food security.

    4. Lagos – 14.7%

Headline inflation fell from 21.4% to 14.7%, thanks to cheaper housing and transport. However, food inflation rose to 23% due to port delays. Ferry routes and rental incentives eased living costs, but kitchen staples became pricier.

    5. Bauchi – 15.3%

Bauchi climbed to 5th position as inflation dropped to 15.3% (food inflation 11.7%). Grain reserve releases, improved roads, and farm cooperatives stabilized prices. A fertilizer plant upgrade, tractor distribution, and civil servant farming incentives further boosted agricultural support.

    6. Nasarawa – 16.3%

Nasarawa posted one of the strongest turnarounds, with inflation falling from 24% to 16.3% and food inflation down to 13.7%. Better harvests, feeder road repairs, and market levy suspensions drove the gains. Federal-IFAD support added farm inputs and tricycles to boost production and distribution.

    7. Adamawa – 17.2%

Adamawa slipped down the ranking as inflation rose slightly to 17.2% and food inflation to 11.9%. Seasonal fuel hikes and road repairs raised costs, though steady harvests and expanded farmer markets helped ease pressure.

    8. Taraba – 17.5%

Taraba made major improvements as headline inflation dropped from 24.9% to 17.5% and food inflation from 25.5% to 16.5%. Reopened grain and yam markets, road repairs, and livestock vaccination cut costs, though farmers now face low prices for harvests.

    9. Ondo – 17.6%

Ondo slipped in the ranking despite a slight headline inflation drop to 17.6%. Food inflation spiked to 23.4% due to delayed harvests and higher staple prices. Non-food relief came from tariff rebates and roadworks, but farming challenges like high input costs and poor rural roads persist.

    10. Yobe – 18.1%

Yobe, July’s most affordable state, fell to 10th after headline inflation surged to 18.1%. Non-food costs rose, but food inflation dropped sharply to 3.6% thanks to strong grain harvests. Government-backed tree planting, tractor distribution, and subsidized farm transport supported agriculture, though rising fuel and utility costs drove the overall increase.

  • Postpartum depression: What every husband should know

Postpartum depression: What every husband should know

Bringing a baby into the world is beautiful, but let’s be honest, it can also be overwhelming. Sleepless nights, new routines, and the pressure to “get it right” can take a toll on both parents. What many people don’t talk about enough is postpartum depression (PPD), and the truth is: your wife might not just be “tired.” She might be struggling with something deeper.

As a husband, knowing what to look out for, and how to show up, can make all the difference.

    What Is postpartum depression?

Postpartum depression is more than mood swings or the so-called “baby blues.” It’s a serious condition that can affect how your wife feels, thinks, and bonds with the baby. It usually shows up within the first few weeks after delivery, but sometimes it comes months later.

    Signs to watch out for:

    1. Persistent sadness or hopelessness
    2. Irritability or unexplained anger
    3. Loss of interest in things she used to enjoy
    4. Trouble bonding with the baby
    5. Extreme fatigue or changes in sleep and appetite
    6. Thoughts of guilt, worthlessness, or being a “bad mother”

    Why husbands matter

Here’s the part many men miss: you play a central role in her healing. Your support, patience, and understanding can ease her load more than you realize.

    How you can help

    1. Listen Without Judging: Sometimes, she just wants to talk. You don’t need to fix everything, just be present.
    2. Step In at Home: Diaper duty, late-night feeding, helping with chores, these small acts are big gestures. They show her she’s not alone.
    3. Encourage Rest; Gently insist she takes breaks, naps, or even short walks. Rest is fuel.
    4. Normalise seeking help: Therapy or professional care isn’t a weakness. Encourage her to talk to a doctor if symptoms persist
    5. Take Care of Yourself Too

Supporting her is easier if you’re also physically and mentally okay. Don’t neglect your own health.

    The Nigerian reality

In many Nigerian homes, conversations about mental health are still whispered. Cultural expectations often tell women to “endure” or “pray it away.” While faith and prayer are important, they don’t replace emotional care. As her husband, you can break that silence and lead with compassion.

    Final Note

Postpartum depression doesn’t mean your wife is weak or failing. It means she’s human. And your role isn’t just to provide? it’s to partner. If you step in with empathy and patience, you create the space for her healing, for your baby’s growth, and for your family’s peace.

  • Seven ways to invest in the future

Seven ways to invest in the future

    By Ayodeji Adebowale

The future is not just something we step into but something to prepare for. True investment goes beyond money; it’s about building a foundation, a legacy that outlives the present and positions us for greater opportunities ahead.

Consider these seven powerful ways to invest in the future:

    1. Financial literacy & smart money habits: Wealth is sustained by knowledge. Learning about savings, investments, budgeting, and financial planning sets you up for stability and freedom tomorrow. Every coin wisely managed today multiplies in the days to come.

    2. Continuous learning & skills development: Industries evolve, technology advances, and opportunities shift. Future-ready people commit to lifelong learning through formal education, online courses, or practical skills. Sharpening your mind is one of the best future-proof investments.

    3. Relationships & networking: The connections you nurture today often become bridges to tomorrow’s opportunities. Building authentic, value-driven relationships ensures you’re not just walking into the future alone, but with allies who can support, guide, and inspire.

    4. Health & well-being: No matter how much wealth or opportunity you gather, you can’t fully enjoy the future without good health. Investing in proper nutrition, exercise, mental wellness, and rest ensures your body and mind are fit to sustain your vision.

    5. Technology & innovation: The future is digital. Whether it’s understanding AI, blockchain, renewable energy, or sustainable practices, positioning yourself within the wave of innovation allows you to ride the tide of progress instead of being swept aside by it.

    6. Personal branding & legacy: The name you build today is the reputation people will remember tomorrow. Cultivate integrity, excellence, and consistency. Your personal brand is an investment that will continue to yield dividends in trust, influence, and opportunities.

    7. Faith & values: A future without direction is like a ship without a compass. Investing in spiritual growth and strong values ensures you remain grounded no matter how uncertain the times become. Your convictions will guide your decisions and keep you aligned with purpose.

On the final note, the best way to predict the future is to create it. These seven investments are not quick fixes, they are seeds. With time, patience, and persistence, they’ll grow into a tomorrow you’ll be proud to step into.

Remember, the Future you don’t invest in, will be unproductive when it’s time to reap.

  • Six must-watch Netflix releases to keep you entertained this October

Six must-watch Netflix releases to keep you entertained this October

October has arrived with its rainy days and unpredictable power supply, but Netflix is offering a stacked lineup of new releases to keep the month exciting.

From spy thrillers and true-crime horrors to heartfelt dramas and romcoms, there’s something for everyone.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Deathwatch (Netflix, 14 October)

If you’re into anime and action, this one might just be your new obsession. It’s from the artiste who wrote John Wick (so you know the fight scenes will hit hard). Splinter Cell: Deathwatch drops us into the shadowy world of espionage with Sam Fisher—a legend in the field—who gets pulled back into action to mentor a rookie. Together, they unravel a conspiracy that could change everything.

It’s an action-packed anime with serious style, dropping just in time for those nights when all you want is to curl up in bed with your laptop.

Nobody Wants This: Season 2 (Netflix, 23 October)

If dark and bloody themes aren’t your thing—or if you just need a laugh and a little romance—you’ll love the energy Nobody Wants This brings. The Emmy-nominated romcom centers on an outspoken, agnostic woman who somehow falls for a very unconventional rabbi. It sounds odd on paper, but the chemistry, humour, and writing make it work.

Season 1 was a surprise hit, and Season 2 promises to keep the charm going. If you missed it the first time around, October is your chance to binge Season 1 before the new episodes land. It’s light, funny, and perfect for unwinding after a hectic day.

    Steve (Netflix, 3 October)

Confession: I’m extremely biased here. If Cillian Murphy is in it, I’m watching it. He’s been a gangster, a physicist, a supervillain, and now, he’s Steve.

Adapted from the novel Shy, the story follows a headteacher struggling to keep his reform school alive while trying to guide a troubled student. It’s heavy, emotional, and a world away from Murphy’s Oppenheimer spotlight last year but that’s exactly why people love him.

If you enjoy slow-burning dramas with performances that linger long after the credits roll, Steve is one to watch. Yes, it’s moody. Yes, it’ll probably break your heart a little. But it’s also Cillian Murphy at his best, and honestly, some of us would watch him read a phone book.

The Ed Gein Story (Netflix, 3 October)

Remember how Netflix had us all hooked on Dahmer last year? Well, Ryan Murphy is back this time with The Ed Gein Story, about the real-life killer whose crimes inspired countless horror movies.

Set in 1950s Wisconsin, the series follows how Gein terrorized his town, desecrating graves and murdering women.

Charlie Hunnam takes on the chilling lead role, and if the show sticks to Murphy’s formula, expect a disturbing deep dive that will dominate social media the moment it drops. If you’re into true-crime binges that make you double-check your doors before bed, this one’s for you.

Everybody Loves Me When I’m Dead (Netflix, 14 October)

First of all 10/10 title. This Thai crime drama follows two bank employees who think they’ve struck gold by stealing from a dead woman’s account. Spoiler: they haven’t. Instead, they’re pulled deep into her criminal underworld, facing consequences they definitely weren’t ready for.

It’s stylish, unpredictable, and proof that not all the best Netflix releases come from Hollywood. If you love discovering international gems or just need a break from the same old thrillers, this is your perfect mid-October pick.

The Witcher: Season 4 (Netflix, 30 October)

Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room: Henry Cavill is gone. Yes, it hurts. But Liam Hemsworth is stepping in, and maybe just maybe he won’t ruin your favorite Witcher.

This season picks up after the chaos of Season 3, with Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri separated by war and hunted by enemies who’d rather see them dead than reunited.

The stakes are higher, the story is inching toward its grand finale, and it promises to feel darker and more dangerous than ever. Even if you’re watching purely out of curiosity to see how Hemsworth handles the role, there’s no denying The Witcher remains one of Netflix’s most bingeable fantasy epics.

  • Five ways to survive congested traffic jams

Five ways to survive congested traffic jams

Traffic in Lagos is often an impromptu experience, unpredictable, and capable of striking at any time of the day.

In the midst of a jam, frustration builds as activities grind to a halt and people long to escape the gridlock.

While traffic is inevitable in the bustling city, it can still be managed.

Here are some practical tips to help you survive and stay productive even in heavy congestion:

    1. Have alternative routes

Before your journey, check if the routes will be congested. Do it using Google Maps, so that it can predict the level of traffic. If it’s positive, you can request possible alternative routes, or otherwise wait a little longer for the traffic to be minimized.

READ ALSO; Jonathan will contest 2027 presidency, says Jerry Gana

    2. Self-comfort

Heat would surely occur, especially for commercial buses, except if you have your air conditioner on. Where there is no proper ventilation, consider taking along with you a rechargeable/ hand fan, to keep yourself cool. You can also carry snacks and water to alleviate hunger, as the duration of the traffic cannot be predicted.

    3. Music

You can listen to songs, especially the cool ones. It will keep you distracted, shifting your focus away from the congestion. Music can also serve as a relief from the frustration that traffic congestion brings.

    4. Sightseeing

While waiting for the road to be cleared, you can use that period for sightseeing, such as observing new things, buildings, people, and actions. Take your time to study where you are, and you can note something special about that area. And if you love reading, carry your favourite books along.

    5. Engagement

You wouldn’t want to be a lone ranger, so engage with people to pass the time. Lucky you if you are a good mixer. Approach the next person seated close and engage them with questions. Join in conversations, but caution is required for controversial discussions. You can also surf the internet and look at the latest trends.
