Fact-Check: Wind, solar reached 10.2 percent of global energy supply

A Twitter User @TonyClimate on February 7, 2023 wrote that wind and
solar make up less than 4 per cent of the global energy supply and are
    making almost no progress.

His tweet reads: “Wind and solar make up less than 4% of the global
energy supply, and are making almost no progress. This is because they
    are inherently unreliable”

The tweet, which was a quote-tweet to Elon Musk’s tweet on the 31st of
January, had 25.8 thousand views, 151 retweets, 7 quote tweets and

    What is Energy Supply?

According to Definitions.net, Energy supply “is the delivery of fuels or
transformed fuels to point of consumption, and encompasses the
extraction, transmission, generation, distribution and storage of fuels”.
Energy supply is sometimes referred to as energy flow.

Energy supply can also be defined as the “quantity of energy available
that suppliers can provide to end users”.

    Sources of Energy Supply

There are primary and renewable energy sources.
Primary sources include nuclear energy, and fossil energy such as oil,
    coal and natural gas.
Renewable energy sources include wind, solar, geothermal and
    hydropower.

What percentage do wind and solar contribute to global energy
    supply?

Enerdata World Energy and Climate Statistics Yearbook 2022 shares
data on how the share of wind and solar has risen constantly and has
reached 10.7% of the global energy supply.

“In 2021, renewable power generation continued to increase at a steady
pace (+16% for wind and +23% for solar), as global renewable
installations remained dynamic. Despite the surge in thermal –
especially coal-fired – power generation in a context of global economic
recovery and revived electricity demand, the share of wind and solar in
the global power mix increased again in 2021 to 10.7%, i.e., +8.4 pts
more than in 2010,” the report read.

The BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2022 also showed that in
2021, Wind and solar reached a 10.2% share of energy generation,
marking the first time wind and solar power exceeded more than 10% of
    global energy generation.

The World Economic Forum stated that Solar generation grew by 23% in
2021, while wind generation increased by 14%.

    Rating

False – Wind and solar make up more than 4% of the global energy
supply as recent global energy supply data shows that wind and solar
generate more than 10% of the global energy supply, and their energy
    generation has been increasing.

  • Five ways to survive cash scarcity

Five ways to survive cash scarcity

Since the implementation of the cash swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) on February 10, Nigerians have been going through hell to transact and fulfill daily obligations. Protests and riots have been recorded in many cities and towns over the scarcity.

Here are five ways to survive the cash scarcity:

Online banking : Mobile transfers should be adapted in every sector. From the transporters, to the business men, food vendors and the likes, it is amazing how many people do not have bank accounts. This is serving as an eye opener for everyone even the lay men that life can be easier if we just go virtual .

Spend cash wisely : There is currently not enough new notes to go round. So this should be a wake up call to Nigerians who depend heavily on cash to spend wisely. Remember the basic rule or law of economics and make a scale of preference. It is not a time to live lavishly but to cut cost.

Buy in bulk. When the opportunity arises, buy things in bulk, things that will not require you to frequent the market. This will save you the stress of lack and being broke. It will also minimize the number of things and times you have to use cash for, so you can focus on the major things that must require cash

Point of Sale (POS) : It will seem like the government is sending a message to the citizens, go cashless. So it is of utmost importance that artisans and micro businesses adopt the POS method. Food vendors, mechanics, kiosk managers. It is a wise decision to begin this process as it will lessen the pressure on both the buyers and sellers in the country.

Trade by Barter: Nigerians can also go back to the antique method of transaction, the trade by barter. Good and services are exchange with their measured equivalence. We could even begin to rewrite history and get a sense of what life was before the introduction of legal tenders.

  • Five countries that don’t celebrate Valentine

Five countries that don’t celebrate Valentine

February has long been recognised as the month of love with Valentine’s Day widely observed on the 14th every year. In many countries, people celebrate this occasion to tell their loved ones how they feel through beautiful flowers and gifts. But a number of Eastern countries choose not to celebrate Valentine’s Day because of different religious beliefs.

Here are the countries that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day:

    Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is well known for its long history and diverse culture with Islam as the dominant religion. The country was tolerant of Valentine’s Day celebrations until 2012 when an internal decree that bans the celebration of this holiday was issued by the Ministry of Education’s Department of Enlightenment and the Promotion of Values.

Instead of observing Valentine’s Day, people in Uzbekistan celebrate the birthday of their country’s hero – Babur – a Mughal Emperor. Valentine’s Day is not illegal but it is strongly discouraged in favour of commemorating Babur.

    Iran

In recent years, Iranian authorities have aimed to forbid Valentine’s celebrations, calling the holiday a “decadent Western custom” and threatening shops and restaurants with prosecution if they sell Valentine’s Day gifts.

Despite this, numerous restaurants in Tehran have reported been fully booked and many shops have been seen selling teddy bears and chocolates. Due to the fact that they are defying the law, establishments use lookouts to see if inspectors are on a Valentine’s Day patrol.

    Malaysia

Malaysia is a federal, constitutional monarchy in Southeast Asia, divided by the South China Sea into two regions. The constitution grants freedom of religion, but it is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country, the population of which is approximately 60 percent Muslim. The capital is Kuala Lumpur.

Since 2005, the celebration of Valentine’s Day has been banned. The Malaysian Islamic Development Department blames the holiday for everything from abortion to alcohol and takes the stance that it is a link of negative ills that can invite disaster and moral decay among youth. There is even an annual anti-Valentine’s Day campaign to reinforce the view. Anybody going out and celebrating does so at their own risk, including arrests.

    Indonesia

As a matter of fact, there is no law that expressly prohibits the celebration of the day in Indonesia. However, in some areas of the country such as Surabaya and Makassar where people have more radical Muslim views, intimidation tactics or small-scale bans are used while in Bando Aceh, there is an outright ban.

    Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, conservative officials strictly impose a ban on the holiday. Selling roses, red products, and love-themed cards are banned in advance of February 14. The phenomenon has led to the creation of a black market of Valentine’s day products.

  • Five countries where Valentine’s celebration is banned

Five countries where Valentine’s celebration is banned

Valentine is a season when love is celebrated. This is accompanied by gifts and everything that has to do with love. Though love doesn’t need a single day to be ‘celebrated,” this is a special day on which people express their love and affection for each other.

However, there are some places around the world where Valentine’s Day is or was prohibited due to religious tradition or other factors; here are five of them:

    1. Malaysia

In 2005, Islamic authorities decided that there will be no more celebration of Valentine’s Day. In a bid to enforce this, a fatwa was issued prohibiting the celebration of Valentine’s Day.

The reason for this is that the authorities claimed February 14 has been used as a gateway to disaster and moral decay among young people. It is said that in Malaysia, people who go out and celebrate might face the risk of being arrested.

A few people, however, find a way to celebrate.

    1. Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan is a large, landlocked country in Central Asia that gained its independence in 1991 with the fall of the former Soviet Union.

Valentine’s Day is also frowned upon in Uzbekistan. This Islamic country was actually tolerant of this celebration until 2012 when the Ministry of Education’s Department of Enlightenment and the Promotion of Values decided to ban it.

While it is not illegal to celebrate valentine’s Day in Uzbekistan, it is strongly discouraged, and the people are advised to celebrate the birthday of an Uzbekistan hero – Babur in place of Valentine.

    1. Iran

In 2010, the Islamic Republic officially banned Valentine’s Day. The government decided that Valentine’s Day is a decadent celebration of love that promotes “degenerate” Western culture and illegitimate relationships.

It is actually so serious that the production of all Valentine’s Day gifts and items was also prohibited by the government.

Unmarried couples are forbidden to mingle with each other.

    1. Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is another Islamic country where valentine’s day celebration was frowned upon years ago. It was said that most of the practices on valentine’s day were against the country’s ideologies and even shops were banned from selling Valentine’s Day-related items.

However, this ban has been lifted and more people now celebrate valentine’s day in Saudi Arabia.

    1. Pakistan

In Pakistan, valentine’s day is seen as against the teachings of Islam, hence celebrations are banned. The ban was introduced by Islamabad High Court in 2018 after a petition by a citizen who said Valentine’s Day was a cultural import from the West and “against the teachings of Islam.”

This country has been subject to numerous riots surrounding the celebration of Valentine’s Day.

  • How singles can enjoy Valentine’s Day

How singles can enjoy Valentine’s Day

It is Valentine‘s season again and we are going to be bamboozled by couples displaying their loved-up photos and ‘Peppering’ the singles as usual.

We are also about to hear the famous Kabusa Oriental Choir trying to torture singles with their ‘ Valentine is coming, where is your boyfriend” song.

Well, to ensure an even representation, Singles should ensure that they do the following:

    1. Babysit for couples for a service fee.

Children can be a huge distraction when a couple decides to have time for themselves.
You can usefully apply yourself by choosing to help the ”set awon couples” by volunteering to help them babysit while they go out. This should not be done without a service fee, preferably cash because of the scarcity now. At least the time you would have used to admire their pictures will be `judiciously utilized.

    1. Send/gifts money to your crush

Who knows, you might be sowing a seed for the next Valentine. Send money or buy gifts for whoever you are crushing on. You must not state your intentions but let them feel special and loved, give them a hint of what your intentions are for them.

    1. Hang out with your fellow singles

Iron sharpeneth iron, they say. You are less likely to feel the heat of Valentine’s shenanigans if you are with people of the same status as yourself. Play a game together, have a discussion, see a movie or just hang out.

    1. Listen to Johnny Drille’s’ Val song ‘You’re just single’

The sonorous singer encourages singles to be happy while referencing Jesus whom he said never had a Val. Johnny Drille said one should be satisfied with one’s state of singleness as it is not a crime. You can put it on auto repeat to affirm to yourself that it is okay to be lonely.

    1. Buy flowers, gift cards and hampers for yourself.

Intentionally refuse to feel left out on gifts. Ensure to write love notes to yourself because self love is the greatest form of love. ‘Happy Valentine to myself. I love me so much. I mean the world to me”

    1. Spend time with family.

Family is also love, in fact family is first love. So whenever you are with your parents or siblings, let it be as unto love for you.

  • Five major myths about HIV/AIDS

    Five major myths about HIV/AIDS

Over the years, myths about HIV/AIDS have discouraged people from getting tested.

People living with HIV can still live healthy life.

Here are five major myths about HIV/AIDS:

    1. HIV can be contracted by being around people living with the virus

HIV isn’t spread through touch, tears, sweat, saliva, or pee.

    You can’t catch it by:
    Breathing the same air

Touching a toilet seat or door handle

    Drinking from a water fountain

    Hugging, kissing, or shaking hands

    Sharing eating utensils

Using exercise equipment at a gym

You can get it from infected blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or breast milk.

    1. Mosquitoes spread HIV

Because the virus is passed through blood, people have worried that they could get it from biting or bloodsucking insects.

Several studies show that doesn’t happen, even in areas with lots of mosquitoes and cases of HIV.

When bugs bite, they don’t inject the blood of the person or animal they bit before you.

Also, HIV lives for only a short time inside them.

    1. You could tell if your partner is living with HIV

You can live with HIV without any symptoms for years. The only way for you or your partner to know if you’re living with the virus is to get tested. The long period of asymptomatic infection is why the CDC recommends that everyone between 18 and 64 be tested at least once as part of routine blood work.

    1. You don’t need to worry about getting HIV, drugs will keep you well

Antiretroviral drugs (ART) improve the lives of many people who have HIV and help them live longer. But many of these drugs are expensive and some may have serious side effects. And, with the exception of a newer drug that can be given by injection, you have to take them every day.

There’s no cure for HIV. And drug-resistant strains of HIV can make treatment harder.

Prevention is cheaper and easier than managing a lifelong condition and the problems it brings.

    1. You are living with HIV, your life is over

In the early years, when the disease was epidemic and no treatment was available, the death rate from AIDS was extremely high. But today’s drugs allow people who have HIV or even AIDS to live much longer, normal, and productive lives.

If you start drug treatment right away and take it correctly, it’s possible you won’t ever develop AIDS. And you may live as long as you would have without the virus.

HIV could make you more likely to get diseases like cancer, heart disease, and kidney disease. So take your HIV medicine as prescribed and protect yourself with a healthy lifestyle. And tell your doctor about any other health problems you have. HIV drugs can interfere with other medications and make some conditions harder to control.
