  • Three great Brazilian free kick takers

Three great Brazilian free kick takers

Brazil has produced many brilliant free-kick takers in history. Some of them are:

    · Juninho

Juninho Pernambucano is arguably the greatest and most versatile free-kick taker in football history. As he got older, through his early years at Vasco De Gama and his eight-year stint at Lyon, Juninho developed his knuckleball technique, something which the likes of Didier Drogba, Cristiano Ronaldo, and David Luiz, to name just three, have tried to replicate.

However, none has come anywhere near the Brazilian’s level of mastery. His magnificent ability to make the ball fly through the air, veering in a number of different directions before finding the net, quite simply is the best. Moreover, distance made little difference. Whether 20, 30, or 40 yards from goal, the hits were often so pure, of such quality and ferocity that goalkeepers simply couldn’t do anything about them.

Such was his quality with a dead ball that Juninho netted 44 of his 100 goals for Lyon from free-kicks and has notched many, many more during his career in football before he retired.

    · Zico: Once upon a time, the gifted Brazilian attacking midfielder Zico was the benchmark for set pieces, the man who set the standard and showed just how vital they could be to a quickly evolving game in the 1970s and ’80s.

A wonderful striker of the ball, Zico matched tremendous technique with lovely control and placement, which so often left the ball beyond the reach of opposing goalkeepers. Close to the penalty area, the Brazilian would embark on a mere two-step run-up, yet he could still generate as much or as little power as he felt the situation needed.

Perhaps the first to turn set-piece taking into an art form, he netted more than 500 goals, including 48 for the Selecao during his football career.

    · Roberto Carlos: The 48-year-old former Real Madrid left full-back scored 27 direct free kicks for the Spanish giants in 527 appearances with 43 other goals. He was renowned for his ferocious shots from any angle of the pitch, leaving many goalkeepers stranded.

  • Five ‘demonised’ beauty accessories

    Five ‘demonised’ beauty accessories

A lot of people have come to par with the recent northern aphrodisiac made famous by some contemporary online sensationalists and charm entrepreneurs.

With the rise of some aphrodisiac sellers, a lot of people have attributed the stuff to some spiritual powers or divination thereby demonising it. Here are five harmless beauty accessories ‘demonised’ in recent times:

    · Waist beads (Jigida). The history and use of waist beads or jigida as called by the Hausas and ola uku by the Igbos precedes this time. It has been in use since inception. It is basically a beauty accessory embraced by different cultures around the globe. Funnily enough, some men have begun to adopt the wearing of waist beads in recent times, some people have described it as “un-manly” and some say it is cute.

    · Henna (lale). The Indians are very well known with this adornment, especially for wedding occasions. It involves drawing beautiful patterns across the body just like tattoos but henna is temporary. It depends on what occasion and how good the artist is, the henna on the skin can be very beautiful and can last for months on the skin. The henna of the contemporary days however has had some side effects on some people. In the not so distant past, the henna used to be natural leaves prepared and left on the body but we now have varying chemical substances used in making the herbs which has now become a substance. Most people have had various side effects ranging from itching, to swelling of the skin and so it is advised to use the appropriate materials for henna. A lot of people do not resist to voice out their reservations on this especially the older generations because according to them it is similar to drawing tattoos.

    · Leg chains. A s3x worker in Lagos is imagined with long hair, skimpy revealing gowns, long high heel, a big ” I might spend the night” bag, the mouth moving with the cracks of a bubble gum, do not forget the bubble gum, very necessary and of cause the leg chain. It doesn’t matter if she was just leaving her parent’s house to school or if she’s returning from a legal work, she’d be named “olosho”.

    · Nose rings. The perception of the nose rings and leg chains are similar. While the leg chain is much more frowned upon especially by southerners, the nose ring is a little more bearable because it is understood that it is a little more cultural than it is fashionable.

    · Eye liner. Eye liner can be accepted by all and sundry except for those whose religious beliefs are totally against any form of make-up. Some diabolical actions have however been attributed to the eyeliner. For example, it is said that people have been robbed of their cash just by fraudsters who consult with traditionalists and they were hence deceived into applying traditional eyeliner called “tiro” in Yoruba. An overall makeover however requires the use of eyeliner in the eye section for the makeup to come out well.

World Water Day: Six side effects of not drinking enough water

Drinking water often helps to maintain a healthy balance. Mild dehydration can decrease one’s energy level and mental functioning and increase stress on the body while severe dehydration can have far more damaging effects.

To avoid dehydration drink at least eight glasses of water every day as an adult.

The importance of water to the mechanics of the human body cannot be overemphasized. It serves as a lubricant to the digestive system and all other body processes.

The water in our saliva helps facilitate swallowing, ensuring that food slides easily down the esophagus. It also lubricates and allows edibles to move more freely.

The body cells and organs depend on water for their functioning. Without water, living things, including humans will die in a few days.

So, when you don’t drink enough water, the underlisted side effects happen.

    · Low Energy

When dehydrated, your energy levels drop, and you might feel too tired to continue on with work.

    · Higher Risk of Stroke

According to study in BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, not drinking enough water and being dehydrated can raise the risk of strokes and prolong recovery time.

    · Slower Metabolism

Your metabolism naturally slows down when you’re thirsty and dehydrated.

    · Headaches

Since your brain needs water, when it’s lacking it can lead to headaches and fatigue.

    · Poor Skin

Skin needs to stay hydrated from water to look dewy and young. Not drinking enough can increase the effects of aging and make the skin look dry. With insufficient water, collagen can crack, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.

    · Weight Gain

Drinking water can even help you lose weight and lower water retention. So not drinking water can make you add a little weight.
