6 ways to avoid low sperm count

By Lekan Ale with agency reports

Sperm count refers to the normal number of sperm present in one example of semen. Fertility doctors evaluate sperm count during routine semen examinations and believe it’s anything but a significant factor for fertility.

If you and your partner are trying to conceive a baby, you may be looking for information about how to increase sperm count to improve your chances of getting pregnant. A healthy sperm count is necessary for fertility.

Here are things to avoid while preventing low sperm count:

    · Quit smoking

A 2016 meta-analysis that reviewed the results of over 20 studies with a total of nearly 6,000 participants found that smoking consistently reduced sperm count.

There are many good reasons to kick a smoking habit to improve your health. If you are trying for a baby, now might be the time to quit smoking. If you can’t kick the habit, go seek advice and support.

    Get enough exercise and sleep

Besides being good for your general health, exercising regularly can boost testosterone levels and improve fertility.

Several studies on overweight or obese men have shown that sperm count increased when they lost weight, in some cases by as much as 95%. It’s an important part of making sure the body is healthy, so ensure you’re switching off early enough.

However, you should avoid too much exercise, as it may have the opposite effect and potentially reduce testosterone levels. Exercise will keep you healthy and at a good weight.

    · Avoid excessive alcohol and drug use

According to research, it’s known that the worldwide use of drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine to decreased sperm production. Some evidence is conflicting, so further research is necessary to confirm.
I’m not suggesting the need to stop alcohol and drug use but at least limiting it to perhaps six units or less a week.

    · Reduce stress

Stress may reduce your sexual satisfaction and impair your fertility. This is because when the body is stressed, it conserves energy and focuses on surviving, rather than reproducing.

Passion, enjoyment and keeping the hormones surging when you’re having sex are all part of the baby-making process. So, if your mind’s elsewhere and racing with work worries, perhaps suggest to takes action to de-stress.

    · Be aware of lap action

Having a computer on the lap all the time really does damage fertility. Laptops, saunas, hot tubs and even tight boxers cause overheating, which damages the sperm.

    · Get enough zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral found in high amounts in animal foods, such as meat, fish, eggs, and shellfish. It’s Improve the overall health of sperm, including concentration and count.

Taking zinc supplements increases testosterone levels and sperm count in those who are low in zinc.

  • 10 things to avoid during disputes with loved ones

10 things to avoid during disputes with loved ones

    By Ekaete Bassey

It’s quite easy to hurt a person especially a loved one with a word or an action during a fight.

The resentment can linger for much longer after the fight is over thereby, ruining the once loving relationship.

Below are ten actions to totally avoid when having a misunderstanding or fight with a loved one:

    Never resort to name-calling

Name-calling or zeroing in one of your partner’s insecurities or vulnerabilities during an argument is a low blow. You may be angry, hurt or frustrated in the moment, but that’s no excuse for this type of behavior.

If you’ve been with your partner long enough, you probably have a sense of certain things about them that would be especially hurtful if you brought them up during an argument.

The problem with these types of jabs is that they can be particularly difficult to move past.

Try focusing on the issue at hand rather than making personal attacks and saying something about your partner that you will probably later regret.

Arguments can be tough to get through, but you still want to demonstrate mutual respect towards each other.

    Never fight in public

If you allow yourself and your partner to fight in a public place then, most likely, you do not respect each other or the surrounding people.

Do not take skeletons out of your closet in public. It’s way better to talk about your issues at home.

Do not go to bed separately

If it wasn’t a tradition to go to bed together, ensure on the day of any fight you consciously make the attempt to actually retire to bed together as this will ease the atmosphere and quickly resolve the conflict.

You may end up lying back to back at first, but in the morning you will wake up in each other’s arms without the tiniest hint of last night’s fight.

Note: By going to sleep separately, you show that you are not ready to make up.

    Never walk away mid-argument.

When a person completely shuts down or disengages in the middle of an argument without warning, it makes your partner feel as though you’ve pulled the rug out from under them.

The conflict remains unresolved and it leaves your partner alone, confused and even more frustrated.

Simply leaving the house during a fight will only show how uncomfortable you feel staying under the same roof as your partner.

Slamming the doors, running into the darkness, leaving the conflict unresolved, all these will make your partner think twice about your level of maturity.

It’s way better to wait until you both calm down, and then you can discuss everything as adults.

However, if you’re feeling overwhelmed and need a timeout, that’s fine. But it’s better to voice that to your partner than to just bail.

    Never ever talk about divorce/separation

When you say “Let’s divorce or go our separate ways” during a fight, this can become the biggest insult ever.

These words have the ability to hurt the feelings of your partner really badly. And the more often you say them, the faster the divorce will actually occur.

If you love each other, never talk about parting.

Never make a major decision during an argument.

When things between you and your partner are heated, you probably don’t have the clarity necessary to make a weighty decision. Instead, wait until things have cooled down before you try to come to a consensus.

Unless you are in an immediate health and safety situation such as domestic violence, it is usually wise to refrain from making important decisions during the heat of battle, when emotions tend to run high and judgment tends to run low.

Never bring up past mistakes or unrelated issues to deflect and distract.

If you want to fight fair, then dredging up your partner’s past errors in a bid to “win” the argument is a big no-no.

It’s often irrelevant to the present debate, counterproductive and can make your partner extra defensive.

If the main cause of the fight is a pile of unwashed dishes, then let it stay that way.

Do not remind your partner of all their prior wrongdoings as this is a way to turn a minor domestic issue into a big ugly conflict.

It is always best to address the direct cause of the fight rather than bringing in other past issues into the present one.

Work through the issue rather than focusing on being ‘right’ or the ‘winner’

Even in the heat of an argument, try to remember that you and your partner are on the same team.

So proving how “right” you are and how “wrong” they are isn’t a worthwhile pursuit. Plus, if you’re more focused on building your case than you are on understanding your partner’s point of view, you’re not going to get very far.

Finding middle ground or agreeing to disagree helps a relationship to thrive while both partners feel worthy of consideration.

Never get physical/Avoid violence at all cost

While fighting, people tend to show the worst sides of their character.

Some, trying to prove themselves right or more powerful than the other, resort to violence.

Don’t ever allow yourself or your partner to use violence, no matter how angry you might be with each other.

The physical pain caused by a loved one has the ability to kill all the feelings that once bound you together.

Don’t include other family members in your fight(s)

Your fight concerns only the both of you and no one else.

By drawing your parents or any other family member into the conflict, you risk turning a regular fallout into a real family mess.

Even if harmony returns to your relationship, the other members of the family will most likely remember everything and use that against you or your partner when given a chance.

Thus, it best to handle your issues between the both of you than bringing the entire family into it as long as no one is being battered.

  • Beyonce, Jay-Z’s relationship in 10 songs

Beyonce, Jay-Z’s relationship in 10 songs

By Chinyere Okoroafor with agency reports

Some music artists usually dole out morsels about their personal lives in songs for audiences to decode.

Beyonce, also known as Queen B and her music mogul husband Jay Z, also known as Jigga or Jiggaman are no exception to that statement.

Just after months, it was rumoured that they had a thing going, Jay-Z’s 2003 track “Public Service Announcement” officially broke the news of their relationship and the lyrics “Got the hottest chick in the game wearing my chain” but by then everybody already knew.

When Beyonce dropped “Lemonade,” which doled outlines that suggested Jay-Z’s long-rumoured unfaithfulness, she completely wiped out her past, her competitors, her halo, and her husband in the song. She then salted the earth so that nothing would grow.

After a year and half, Jay-Z released a response to “Lemonade” in his thirteenth solo album titled “4:44.” In the song it was mostly him apologising.

Here are 10 chosen relationship-illuminating songs, the ones that best provide a penciled-in roadmap to their marriage.

    · “03 Bonnie and Clyde,” 2002

“03 Bonnie and Clyde” is Beyonce’s post-Destiny’s Child solo debut and her first collaboration with Jay-Z.

The song offers the unofficial confirmation of their relationship. In the song, they referred to each other as “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” throughout.

It remains one of their biggest joint hits and its ride-or-die theme is one the couple will return to repeatedly.

    · “Crazy in Love,” “Dangerously in Love,” 2003

This is Beyonce’s first solo hit and remains the couple’s best collaboration. Beyonce sings about Jay-Z, and how much she loves him; Jay-Z raps about himself.

    · “Upgrade U”/“Deja Vu,” “B’Day,” 2006

This is Beyonce’s second solo effort with her Jay Z she boasts about submission (“It’s very seldom that you’re blessed to find your equal/ Still played my part and let you take the lead role, believe me”).

    · “Lost One,” “Kingdom Come,” 2006

Two months after the above tracks dropped, Jay-Z injects a note of pessimism (“I don’t think it’s meant to be, B/ For she loves her work more than she does me”), previously unheard of in the couple’s early days.

    · “Countdown,” “4,” 2011

Beyonce’s “4,” which dropped three years after her marriage to Jay-Z, is mostly split between heartsick pleas to a feckless partner (“I Care”), and jubilant, battle-tested love songs like this one (“There’s ups and downs in this love/ Got a lot to learn in this love”). Over the next few albums, this division would become magnified.

    · “(Part II) On the Run,” “Magna Carta … Holy Grail,” 2013

This unofficial “ ’03 Bonnie and Clyde” sequel revisits much of the same outlaw-lovers-fleeing-unseen-forces territory, though this time they seem less sprightly, and ever-so-slightly over it. “Who wants that hero love that saves the day, anyway?” Beyonce wonders. “Cliche, cliche, cliche, cliche.”

    “Mine,” “Beyonce,” 2013

Beyonce’s surprise drop self-titled album is notorious for its odes to marital sexy times (“Drunk in Love,” “Partition”). But “Mine,” a collaboration with Drake, hints at internal fissures: “Been having conversations about breakups and separations/ I’m not feeling like myself since the baby/ Are we gonna even make it?”

    · “Hold Up,” “Lemonade,” 2016

Beyonce had been alluding to her husband’s infidelities for years, but “Lemonade,” a travelogue of the couple’s trip through marital hell, still felt like a hit between the eyes with a Hot Sauce baseball bat. In what may be its most unsparing track, one of the world’s most desirable women is reduced to searching her husband’s phone for evidence of his cheating (“I’m not too perfect/ To ever feel this worthless”). The part where Beyonce suggests that Hova’s legion of Beckys might not be interested in him if she wasn’t his wife? Devastating.

    · “4:44,” “4:44,” 2017

Jay-Z’s answer to “Lemonade” is one long, satisfying grovel. On the title track, he expresses wonderment that women are actual people (“Took for my child to be born, see through a woman’s eyes”), references what appears to have been a fight on Beyonce’s 21st birthday, and offers an all-purpose apology: “I suck at love/ I think I need a do-over.”

    · “713,” “Everything is Love,” 2018

In which Jay-Z appears to explain couple’s still-untold origin story, which went something like this: After meeting at an MTV event in Cancun in 2000, “Fate had me sittin’ next to you on the plane/ And I knew straightaway.” They wouldn’t speak again for almost two years, until after Beyonce ended another relationship (“I bet that dude rued the day”).

She chose Nobu for their first date. Jay-Z invited a friend along. This proved unwise. “I brought my dude to play it cool/ My first foolish mistake.” Elsewhere, the Carters discuss their vow renewal, that time Beyonce met one of the Beckys, and the reason the couple didn’t attend the Kardashian-West wedding: They were working through some couples stuff, Hova implies, and also they probably didn’t want to.

  • 10 benefits of healthy eating

    10 benefits of healthy eating

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

In the race to meet up with day-to-day activities, people tend to not follow guidelines on diet about what to eat, how to eat and when to eat.

By disregarding healthy eating, the body misses out on a lot of benefits and gradually breaks down until it can no longer function properly.

Below are 10 benefits of healthy eating:

    • Weight loss: Studies suggest that consuming more of daily calories at breakfast and fewer at dinner can help drop more pounds. The weight is a balance between the calories consumed and the calories discharged.
    • Diabetes management: Managing diabetes takes shape when focus is placed on eating lean protein, high-fiber, less processed carbs, fruits, and vegetables, low-fat dairy, and healthy vegetable-based fats such as avocado, nuts, canola oil, or olive oil.
    • Improved memory: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and olive oil help improve the health of blood vessels, reducing the risk for a memory-damaging stroke.
    • Heart health: Choices of foods that go a long way in boosting the heart health are the ones low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol including limiting salt.
    • Better mood: A balanced diet can help promote a balanced mood. Healthy eating helps to keep the blood sugar stable which can help maintain the mood throughout the day.
    • The health of the next generation: Children learn most health-related behaviours from the adults around them, and parents who model healthful eating and exercise habits tend to pass these on.
    • Reduced cancer risk: A diet high in whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein may prevent cancer. Though no diet has been proven to cure cancer, plant-based and keto diets may lower the risk or benefit treatment.
    • Improved gut health: Fruits and vegetables are the best sources of nutrients for a healthy microbiota. They are high in fiber, which can’t be digested by the body. However, fiber can be digested by certain bacteria in the gut, which stimulates their growth.
    • Getting enough sleep: Working hand in hand, a healthy diet can bring about falling asleep fast, enhance sleep quality and duration, and getting consistent high-quality sleep can actually aid eating better. Research shows that when sleep-deprived, the chance of consuming foods high in calories, fat, and sugar becomes higher.
    • Strong bones and teeth: Strong teeth and bones are important for overall health. One important factor in keeping bones and teeth strong and healthy is calcium. Calcium is a mineral and is one of the most abundant in the body. It is recommended to get 1000 to 1200 milligrams (mg) of calcium each day from calcium-rich foods and take a supplement only if needed.
  • 12 unmistakable signs his love for you has burnt out

12 unmistakable signs his love for you has burnt out

    By Ekaete Bassey

Author of the popular novel “Act like a lady, think like a man” Steve Harvey “said: “A man’s love is expressed in three forms: he declares his rights for you in public, protects, and takes care of you.”

However, a part of this saying can be doubted because in our time, not all women need to be provided for or protected by men.

What they in fact need is love.

Unfortunately, sometimes women tend to see love when it’s not really there.

Sometimes a woman can feel that something is wrong without having to hear it from her partner.

Here are 12 unmistakable signs a man’s strong feelings of love and adoration for a loved one has burnt out completely:

    · Ignores you

It’s like you don’t exist anymore. He completely begins to live a life of his own.

Before, anything he or you did was a mutual decision. And now, you don’t even know that he’s planning on doing anything.

When you are around, he gets all weird, and he pretends he’s alone.

Even if he needs something like: “Did you iron my shirt?” he won’t ask you. He’ll go and find it and if it’s not ironed, he will do it himself.

    · Lack of communication

One of the biggest signs he doesn’t love you anymore is a lack of communication. This is not like ignoring you.

This is much more serious and on a deeper level. When he loses interest in you, he will cut you off. He will lose the need to communicate with you in any way. Whether it’s body language communication, verbal or just eye contact; he will break off all of these.

    · Criticism of appearance

A philosopher once said: “A person will like everything, even the flaws, of their beloved, but will be annoyed at the perfection of those whom he does not love.” For a truly loving man, you are always beautiful, even with messy hair and even in your oversized nightgown. He will not notice that you have gained a couple of extra pounds after birth if you do not say it yourself.

But if your man constantly tells you to go to the gym or hints that you need plastic surgery, do not rush to indulge him. It is most likely that it’s not your appearance that doesn’t suit him but you yourself. And even if you lose weight, he will find other faults in you.

    · Discussing your shortcomings with friends

No one is perfect but truly loving people focus on the advantages of their partners instead of focusing on the flaws.

If your partner publicly humiliates you and laughs at your failures, do not expect anything good from such a relationship. Such a partner doesn’t respect you, and a strong and reliable union is impossible without respect. By criticizing you with other people, he unconsciously tries to prove to others (and himself) that it’s your fault that he stopped loving you.

    · His attitude towards your habits

Loving men, as a rule, endure all their partners annoying or strange habits like eating from his plate, occupying the bathroom for hours while chatting with their girlfriends, filling the wardrobe with unnecessary stuffs, singing same songs all day and so on and remain silent or react with humor.

But if your man is constantly scrutinizing every little thing you do and making negative comments about your behaviour, it means that the only feeling he has left is irritation instead of love.

    · Lack of attentiveness to your stories

Scientists have proved that a man is able to listen to a woman attentively for only 6 minutes

Yet, if a man sees that something is very important to you, he will make an effort to listen to you attentively, even if this topic is completely uninteresting to him. When he loves you, he won’t leave you without attention. But if he keeps changing the topic or runs away using different excuses whenever you try to talk, most likely, your worries do not bother him.

Accordingly, he is not going to participate in the resolution of any issues that may come up during the relationship.

    · His attitude toward your emotions

Men absolutely cannot stand women’s tears. And recently, a scientific explanation has been found: it turns out that female tears contain special volatile substances that lower the level of testosterone in the blood of men which leads to a decrease in sexual desire.

In fact, when you cry, the only thing a man wants to do is run away and not see it. But if he loves you, he will pull himself together and do everything he can to try to comfort you even if the reason you’re crying seems trivial to him. He will calm down only when you start smiling again. However, if he doesn’t love you, then your tears will be just one more reason to get angry at you .

    · Flirtatiousness

Flirting is very good for relationships. This is a great tool to revive feelings and overcome routine when you have been together for a long time. Text messages, intriguing hints, playful photos; all these helps rekindle mutual interest, as in the first days of the relationship.

Of course, it is very important that both partners actively respond to each other’s advances.

However, if you have already sent 10 erotic selfies in different poses to your partner and he still hasn’t been coming up with new lines, rather his reaction is zero, stop doing it. Or consider what could be causing your partner to ignore your advances.

    · His reaction to your requests

For a loving man, the requests and wishes of his beloved (not friends or distant relatives) will always take first place.

In fact, men like to help women as this gives them the opportunity to demonstrate how cool, strong, and responsible they are.

Of course, there are situations when a man cannot help, for example, he does not know how to repair a tap, he certainly should not leave you alone to deal with this problem but call the plumber, instead.

However, if the most innocent request, like asking for help changing a light bulb, is perceived with annoyance and as just “yet another unbearable task,” the relationship is worth reconsidering. Is it possible that your man is helping some other woman and with greater enthusiasm?

    · Jealousy

It turns out that even monkeys are able to feel jealous of their partners around other males. Jealousy arose in the course of evolution as a way to maintain the integrity of the couple. A man is wired so that subconsciously he wants to declare his rights to a woman and to be the only “owner” of her beauty.

Therefore, it is quite natural that your man starts to get nervous when someone pays attention to you. But people, of course, are not monkeys, and bouts of excessive jealousy will only harm the relationship.

But when a man is absolutely indifferent to the signs of attention that other men show his lady, this is an alarming sign. He no longer wants to fight for her and doesn’t want to try to become better to stay the best for her.

    · Protection from danger

The need to protect their loved ones is also the basis for men while the need to be protected is the basis for women. And although modern men no longer have to protect the weaker sex from predators and wild tribes, there are still dangers in our troubled world.

Therefore, it is pretty natural that a loving man becomes worried when his second half comes back from work late or is alone in an unfamiliar place. If he cannot be around, then he’ll at least call her and make sure she’s fine. By protecting a woman from threats, whether real or imaginary ones, a man feels like a superhero.

Therefore, if you do not get protection and support from a man in difficult situations, such as having to walk home alone at night, getting lost in an unfamiliar city or getting yelled at by your boss, this is a very bad sign. Your chosen one is either a coward or simply doesn’t like you.

    · Gentle words and expressing feelings

The language of love consists of tender words, touches, hugs, and kisses. When we call a partner names like “sweetheart,” “darling,” or “dear,” we create a special intimate atmosphere. The choice of affectionate names occurs unconsciously and shows how one partner relates to the other, who dominates the relationship, and how well they are balanced.

By the way, men need all this lovey-dovey stuff just as much as women do. Researchers have proven that married couples – husbands who often kiss and hug with their wives feel 3 times happier in a marriage than those who don’t.

So if your man frowns every time you try to hug him and call “sweetheart,” the reason is not his natural male rigidity. As sad as it may sound, his feelings have probably faded away.

  • What to know about defibrillators

    What to know about defibrillators

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

Defibrillators became the topic of conversation following the collapse of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen at Parken Stadium in Euro 2020 game against Finland on Saturday.

The incident involving Eriksen, who had suffered a cardiac arrest and needed emergency treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the field, brought about the campaign for availability of defibrillators on the football pitch and public spaces.

Hours after Eriksen was resuscitated with the aid of a defibrillator, there were reports of a teenager who was arrested after two people were caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) vandalising a defibrillator kit at Buxted football club (FC).

Buxted FC reportedly discovered the defibrillators had been tampered with in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A defibrillator, according to British Heart Foundation, is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it’s an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who’s in cardiac arrest.

Here are things to know about defibrillators:

    • To help someone who is in cardiac arrest effectively, a defibrillator needs to be found as quickly as possible. For every minute it takes for the defibrillator to reach someone and deliver a shock, their chances of survival reduce by up to 10%.
    • Research establishes that anyone can use a defibrillator as no special training, except following clear instructions, is required.
    • There are clear instructions on how to attach the defibrillator pads. It then assesses the heart rhythm and will only instruct to deliver a shock if it’s needed. A shock cannot be delivered accidentally because the defibrillator will only prompt the shock if it is needed.
    • Defibrillators are strongly recommended for workplaces and public spaces like airports, shopping centres, community centres, and train stations. These defibrillators are known as public access defibrillators (PADs) as anyone can use them.
    • Research suggests that administering defibrillation within three to five minutes of collapse can produce better survival rates – as high as 50-70%.
    • According to the Resuscitation Council (UK), only 3% of cardiac arrests happen within the recommended retrieval distance of a defibrillator.
  • FACT CHECK: There is no B.1.1.138 COVID-19 variant in Nigeria

FACT CHECK: There is no B.1.1.138 COVID-19 variant in Nigeria

    By Justina Asishana

Claims: There is a B.1.1.138 COVID-19 Variant in Nigeria. The deadly Indian B.1617 coronavirus variant is found in Nigeria.

Conclusion: Yes, the new Indian B.1617 COVID-19 variant strain is in Nigeria but there is no B.1.1.138 COVID-19 Variant in Nigeria.

    In Retrospect

After the first quarter of 2021, it appeared as if the worst about the COVID-19 pandemic had ended because of reduction in the cases of the COVID-19 virus. This made everyone go about their normal activities especially after arrival of COVID-19 vaccines.

But the incident of new cases or the third wave of the pandemic in India raised concerns as India is one of the countries frequented by Nigerians for medical tourism and education.

In April 2021, some tweets emerged with claims that scientists had found five sequences of the Indian variant in Edo and Osun states and other claims there is a new B.1.1.138 COVID-19 Variant in Nigeria.

The messages on Twitter and WhatsApp had cautioned that people should not travel to these affected States with people advised to adhere to the safety protocols.

For instance, @woye1 tweeted: “Prepare for 3rd Covid-19 wave in Nigeria as scientists have found five sequences of the deadly India B.1.617 in Edo N60bn & Osun dancing states.  From Redeemer’s Uni, a new B.1.1.138 variant has emerged in Nigeria that is creating havoc in Mauritius Island (don’t travel there)”.

Also, @codonye wrote: “The Indian variant of Covid-19 I am told has been isolated here in Nigeria. We go back to the trenches. Prevention is the way. We don’t have the capacity to deal with this if we begin to report high cases. breathless, co-morbid Wear a mask..prevent Covid.”

Yet, @jhon_Odey wrote: “Indian COVID-19 variants are now in Nigeria, please stay safe out there folks.”

    Verification

An advanced google web search revealed the African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID) at the Redeemers University, Ede Osun State, had informed the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) about the discovery of the Indian COVID-19 strain in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, there are three institutions with sequencing capacity for COVID-19 variants. These are NCDC, the Nigeria Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and Africa Centre for Excellence in Genomics (ACEGID).

ACEGID has the most advanced capabilities and is also a reference laboratory for the joint World Health Organisation (WHO) and Africa Centres for Disease Control COVID-19 Genome Sequencing Laboratory Network.

The Centre is one of those that conduct tests on COVID-19 variants and sequences released a statement on the 12th of May saying that they had informed the NCDC about the strain some weeks back.

It was discovered that the notification was sent to NCDC by Professor Christian Happi. The notification which was dated April 25, 2021, reads: “We have found five sequences of the India B.1.617 in the country, specifically in Edo and Osun states.

“What we have is the B1.617 from India. That is the variant they had but that variant has now evolved beyond the mutation that we identified.”

However, not all Nigerians got to know about the new variant until the centre released a statement, which was collaborated on  May 13 by the Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chike Ihekweazu in a television interview conducted by Arise TV.

Ihekweazu explained that they had received information about the Indian strain from the centre, which is one of the NCDC partners in testing and sequencing the variants.

He added that Nigeria is not the only country with B.1617 strain. It has also been discovered in 44 other countries across the world.

“Yes, they informed us three weeks ago that there is a new strain in the country and we have communicated our observations and assessment to the Presidential Steering Committee which made the government give travel restrictions to three countries which include India, Turkey and Brazil,” he explained.

This was followed on the 13th of May with a Tweet from the NCDC DG Twitter handle @Chikwe_I: “While Nigeria’s #COVID19 cases have declined, we still face major risks.

“The detection of 3 cases of B.1.617 variant is a reminder to be cautious. GoN is still testing, vaccinating & restricted travel. Everyone needs to #TakeResponsibility. Pls, adhere to all preventive measures.’

The World Health Organization on the 13th of May also confirmed that Nigeria and Algeria had reported the Indian variant of the coronavirus in the countries.

However, within the three weeks when NCDC was communicated about the presence of the variant to when they confirmed that the variant was in the country, there had been a lot of information flying around regarding the COVID-19 Indian variant.

However, while the claims about the COVID-19 Indian variant B.1617 strain was confirmed to be true, the claim about the B.1.1.138 COVID-19 Variant in Nigeria seems to be a misinformation.

Checks done on Google search, the website of the NCDC, Africa CDC and WHO did not turn up any variant of B.1.1.138 available in Nigeria.

    Profile Check

One of the tweets, which circulated widely and also on WhatsApp was that of @woye1. His tweet about the new Indian COVID-19 variant in the country caught the attention of the reporter because it has a lot of alarming information.

The tweet reads: “Prepare for 3rd Covid-19 wave in Nigeria as scientists have found five sequences of the deadly India B.1.617 in Edo N60bn & Osun dancing states.  From Redeemer’s Uni, a new B.1.1.138 variant has emerged in Nigeria that is creating havoc in Mauritius Island (don’t travel there)”.

In the Nigerian context, @woye1 can be attributed to being an influencer because of the large number of followers on Twitter and other social media handles. Hence, his tweets can be shared by his followers who may have taken it beyond Twitter as some of the messages seen on WhatsApp had the name of the Twitter handle.

Checking the tweet account with bot sentinel to analyze the behaviour of the Twitter account, the tool which analyses if an account is bot- like or human stated the Tweeter exhibits satisfactory tweet activities.

The rating details read, “Rating Details – Satisfactory – Accounts that are classified as satisfactory engage in somewhat typical tweet activity. Satisfactory accounts regularly participate in online discourse and often tweet outside of the norm. Although the tweeting activity of satisfactory accounts is slightly above normal, we still consider satisfactory accounts to be moderately safe to interact with. As with any account, please use your best judgment when interacting with any account you don’t know.”

While a part of the information regarding the B.1617 being in Nigeria is correct, another contentious part is that a new B.1.1.138 variant has emerged in Nigeria which no other source seems to confirm the presence of the variant.

The National Center for Disease Control website did not state this variant while naming the type of variants in the country neither did any search turn up any variant named B.1.1.138.

The Variants of COVID-19 in Nigeria

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) posted in a 19th February, 2021 publication on its website thus: “Statement on Variants of  SARS-COV-2 in Nigeria”.

In the statement, the Center stated that as of February 14th, there are about 55 different lineages of SARS-CoV-2 known to be circulating in Nigeria and they are changing rapidly.

The Center said that the country has the B 1.1.7 Variant which is one of the variants of concern and the strain was detected from cases in Lagos, FCT, Osun, Oyo, and Kwara and Edo States.

Another variant mentioned by the B.1.525 variant has been detected among cases in five states in Nigeria. NCDC noted that B.1.525 at the time of releasing the statement was a new strain, but not yet a variant of concern

    The Indian B.1.617 Variant

The Delta virus or the Indian B.1.617 COVID-19 variant has been classified as a ‘variant of concern’ by the WHO. Research showed that the B.1.617.2 variant is present in at least 60 countries.

According to WHO, the B.1.617 virant may be more transmissible than other variants.

The coronavirus strain was first identified in India in late 2020. Scientists recently estimated that it might be 40 per cent to 50 per cent more transmissible than the B.1.1.7 variant, or Alpha, which in turn is more transmissible than the original virus and quickly spread across the globe.

    Conclusion

Yes, the Indian B.1617 variant is currently in Nigeria. The variant which, however, is currently not very rampant in the country is still being studied.

To prevent the further spread of the variant which is classified as a variant of concern, the Nigerian government banned all flights to Turkey, Brazil and India.

However, there is no indication of any variant named B.1.1.138 COVID-19 Variant in Nigeria.

The government has laid down some procedures and safety protocols alongside the COVID-19 vaccination which is currently ongoing in the country and the best way to prevent the transmission of the COVID-19 pandemic is to adhere to these safety protocols.

FACT-CHECK: Viral Video of fleeing residents not from Niger State

    By Justina Asishana

Claim: A viral video making rounds in Niger state claimed to be of people fleeing from attacks by herdsmen in Niger state heading towards Kebbi.

Conclusion: Although analysis is ongoing regarding the location of the video, the video however is not of people fleeing from herdsmen attack in Niger state.

    Full Text

A video on the 10th of June was circulated on FacebookInstagram and WhatsApp.

The video portrayed that people in Niger state were running towards Kebbi from attacking herdsmen.

On Facebook, one of the accounts that shared the video is Deyemi Saka, who claimed to have obtained it from a friend Ismat Suleja.

His post reads: “This was sent to me from a friend in Niger State and claimed “these are people who are fleeing from attack by herdsmen in Niger state and heading towards Kebbi” Ismat Suleja  Thanks for sharing.”

On Instagram, it was shared by @thelowdownstations whose post reads: “Northern Nigeria…These are not migrants, these are Niger state citizens…indigenes…who have been sacked by insurgents who came intp Nigeria through the borders and won’t stop killing and kidnapping.

“Now they are migrating in mass from Niger in to Kebbi..These foreign bandits are everywhere…North..South of Nigeria.”

On WhatsApp, it has been shared to several individuals and in various groups.

    Verification

While analysis is still ongoing for the exact location where the video takes place and the language being spoken, preliminary verification revealed the following:

    ●      The language spoken is not Gbagi, Kambiri, Nupe or Hausa which are the major languages in Niger state which can also be found in Rijau local government area.

    ●      The video showed people moving but on closer look, it was observed that the people were not running which should be if they were really fleeing from the attack of herdsmen. This can be seen when watching the video from 37 -39 seconds.

    ●      Some of the women were seen wearing hats which are small in nature and which is not typical of the women of Rijau local government area of Niger state.

    ●      Watching the over three minutes video, no one seem to fall which should have been the case should a group of people be fleeing as indicated by posters of the video. In a crisis suituation, there should be something like a rush and one or two people would be bound to fall down.

    ●      In the 50-54 seconds, a young girl was seen confidently hawking what seems to be like bread and she wasn’t running. This seems unusual for a situation which should be said to be about people fleeing from attacks

    ●      In 1.05 minute, some women stopped to adjust the baby on one of the women’s back.

    About Rijau

Distance from Kebbi to Rijau 144 km 89 miles

Niger Commissioner of Information, Mohammed Sani Idris, in a statement debunked the rumour. He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a video of a number of fleeing people believed to be refugees purported to be fleeing from Rijau.

“The story is untrue. We investigated the origin of the video and discovered that it is not from Nigeria.

“As Niger state, and the entire country, is experiencing a security challenge, some unscrupulous characters have decided to chance upon the situation as an opportunity for mischief and political profit.

“To the characters responsible, know that, firstly, God is in the know of your machinations and would judge you accordingly. Secondly, the Government will trace the story to its origin like it has done before and will be hard on both the authors and those responsible for spreading the falsehood.

“We cannot permit mischievous individuals to deepen the anxiety of our people and exacerbate an already difficult situation. The government will come down hard upon these criminals, and will see to it that they are made to face the full wrath of the law.”

    Conclusion

The video making rounds do not show people fleeing as preliminary analysis shows that the movement of people may be a procession of some kind.

An in-depth analysis is still ongoing about the location which would be updated once the location is discovered.

However, preliminary analysis shows that the video does not originate from Niger state.

    Verdict

The video is misleading. Some mischievous persons are spreading the video to cause fear and panic!
