  • How Abiodun dazzled doubters, took Ogun to great heights

How Abiodun dazzled doubters, took Ogun to great heights

    By Kayode Akinmade

It is the tree set at nought that causes one to trip and fall, so says the elders, and critics of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, learnt that lesson so well. The naysayers ought to have learnt from the intense persecution that heralded his move into the Oke Mosan Government House, but they did not, in part because of the power of rumour. If getting into office was tedious, keeping it was war. No sooner had he assumed office than opposition figures within and without ganged up against him, telling whoever cared to listen that nothing good could from his administration. But the Iperu-born prince—and yes, he is actually a prince—would not deviate from his focus. He kept in mind the motto of the Royal Air Force: Per adua ad astra (Through difficulty to the stars), and the inflow of projects and investments into the state ever since has validated his position.

At this very moment, Ogun is on the cusp of a massive turnaround in energy and food production. Do not take my word for it: Google is your friend. Nigeria’s industrial capital is intent on fully leveraging the recent amendment to the 1999 Constitution which allows federating units to generate their electricity independently and sufficiently according to their needs, and Governor Abiodun made this clear while receiving a delegation from Brazilian companies, Ambar Energia Brazil, led by its President, Mr. Marcelo Zanatta, and the CEO of an agricultural firm, JBX, Mr Jose Batista, who visited the state for an on-the-spot assessment of various sectors of the Ogun economy. President of Ambar Energia Brazil, Mr. Marcelo Zanatta, and the representative of JBX commended the Ogun State Government for providing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate investment growth, pledging to invest massively in the power sector and contribute significantly to the state’s industrial development.

Ogun currently consumes approximately 8,200 megawatts of electricity, with a whopping 80 percent of this generated independently.  And the administration is fully determined to achieve self-sufficiency in power generation through various strategic initiatives. For one thing, it has the advantage of gas reticulation, with two major gas pipelines traversing the state, ensuring easy access to energy across the eight industrial clusters. Actually,  an Independent Power Plant meant to provide 24-hour of uninterrupted electricity to most parts of Abeokuta, the state capital, will  be ready for commissioning shortly. Governor Abiodun made this known  in February after inspecting the 30-megawatts power plant located in Onijanganjangan, near Ewekoro. The project, run in collaboration with private sector partners, is the first phase of the Ogun State Light Up Project. The power plant  will  provide constant electricity to government institutions like offices, health facilities, government quarters, police stations, local government offices, and higher institutions, and will eventually reach private individuals and industries when the capacity is increased.

The state that hosts Dangote, Nestlé, and Lafarge and other big businesses is ready to thrive. The largest protein producer in the world, JBS of Brazil, has indicated interest in investing $2.5bn in the livestock subsector of Nigeria’s economy, and it is set to capture that investment. The Controlling Shareholder of the company, Mr. Wesley Batista, gave this indication when officials of his firm, led by the Controlling Shareholder of EMN, Mr. John Coumantaros, visited the people’s Governor at Oke-Mosan. Governor Abiodun promised to open up Ogun State for investments and industrialization, and he has achieved already that. Roads are being built left, right and centre and investors are pouring into the state. And then there is the  peace and tranquility that have attended his stewardship, and the position of Ogun in the comity of states. Ogun is being envied because across all sectors—agric, education, security, environment, human capital development—discernible progress is being made. Ask the President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who recently revealed that his company decided to return to Ogun State because of Prince Abiodun’s vision and the state’s investor-friendly climate. Now, in Itori and Ibeshe, cement plants targeted at producing a combined 18 million metric tons per annum are being constructed, potentially making Ogun the highest cement producing state or region in Africa. And there’s a deep seaport to boot as part of Dangote’s $700 million investment.

Besides, the Abiodun administration is building a dry port to further open up the state for investment opportunities, in addition to the over 4,000 affordable houses already built for medium and upper-income earners in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Sagamu, Iperu, Ijebu-Ode and Ota.  Abiodun’s Gateway State has a huge IGR profile that marks it out as one of the few financially self-sufficient states in the country. It has Nigeria’s largest industrial layout, is one of the few states with N150bn IGR annually, and can conveniently pay salaries without federal support.

The investment story is not a fluke. In April 2022, the Ogun State government signed a $400m MoU with a foreign firm, Arise Integrated Industrial Platform, on the development of Olokola Free Trade Zone and Remo Agro Processing Zone. In August of the same year, a steel conglomerate, African Industries Group, pledged to invest over $500m in the Ogun State economy. Nigerians will remember that in May 2023, the Canadian Government indicated interest in investing in the agricultural and technological sectors of the Ogun economy to strengthen over 60 years of the bilateral relationship with Nigeria.  In July 2024, the South Africa-Nigeria Business Chamber pledged to spearhead aggressive investment drive for Ogun State, funding series of investments to drive economic growth and development in the State. The next month, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) expressed strong support for the $500 million investment by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to enhance power infrastructure in Ogun State. Also, a Chinese company, Inner Galaxy Steel Company Limited, in October last year, announced a $300 million investment to establish a new steel plant for the production of specialised steel products in Ogun State, and in the same month, the Ogun State Government announced the establishment of a $5 million battery recycling plant by a British company.

It can be no surprise that Governor Abiodun’s vision is taking shape with the urban renewal initiative across major towns in the state: the housing projects initiated by his administration have added lustre and beauty to all major cities across the state. Kobape, Iperu, Ijebu Ode and Ilaro are now being referred to as smart cities. The first phase of 35 houses are receiving finishing touches at the Ibara Government Reservation Area, Abeokuta, with drainages, sidewalks, solar street lights, electricity and water reticulation already in place. Hear Governor Abiodun: “You can see that the designs are very pleasing to the eyes and the completion is also commendable. This project is not executed by foreign contractor and it is not even in contract but constructed by direct labour to ensure that our citizens who are artisans like painters, bricklayers, carpenters, welders participate in this construction.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun took over the reconstruction of the 81-kilometres Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway after sustained diplomatic engagements with the Federal Government. Critics of the road situation in the state had dwelled on the poor state of federal roads. But now the story has changed. Residents of the  Lagos-Ogun border communities can testify to the massive construction and reconstruction of roads in the area after decades of abandonment. Go to Alagbole, Ajuwon, Akute and other  communities in Ifo Local Government Area of the state, and see wonders. The world class Agro-cargo Airport located along the Ilisan-Iperu axis, a facility widely adjudged as the biggest in Nigeria with its 4km runway and standard  apron,  is of course yet another story, as is Governor Abiodun’s focus on  ICT, which has tremendously improved the quality of education in schools. It is no accident that a teacher from Ogun State, Mr. Kayode Adewale, is one of the best 50 teachers in the world.

•At the end of the day, we should thank the doubters, shouldn’t we?

Emerhor celebrates Tinubu on 73rd birthday

Delta APC Founding Leader and Chairman of Delta APC Peace and Reconciliation Committee; Olorogun Otega Emerhor OON, has congratulated President Ahmed Bola Tinubu on his 73rd birthday, praising him as a pragmatic president that Nigeria needs.

In a statement he signed, Emerhor recalls his congratulatory message to the President in June 2022 after the president won the APC primaries to become the APC Presidential candidate where he described Mr President as THE MAN FOR THESE TIMES.

Emerhor had stated: “Tinubu was the man most suited to take on the revival of a nation beset with hydra-headed issues ranging from the economy to insecurity to infrastructure deficit and the unity of the country.

“That Tinubu is indeed the Man of these Times. A man who has done it before in Lagos State and can do it again for Nigeria. A man of capacity, a visionary extraordinary. A pragmatic doer, a detribilised manager of men and indeed, a hands on leader. Tinubu will get Nigeria right.”

As the President celebrates his 73rd birthday after under two years in the saddle, Emerhor stated his words have become prophetic.

  • Tinubu on lane of service @ 73

Tinubu on lane of service @ 73

The over seven decades of his life have been remarkable for struggles, battles and exploits. His preoccupation now is how to make Nigeria better. As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu clocks 73, Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU revisits his thorny path to power at the centre and how he is grappling with governance in challenging times.

For over 35 years, he has been fully associated with the struggle for a better, united and prosperous Nigeria. Sometimes, he found himself on the firing line, but often escaped being boxed into the fire.

Pragmatic, realistic, focussed and resilient, he has been consistent, reliable and dependable. Only few old politicians in the land today can boast of the same experience, adventures and battles that have shaped the political career Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President and Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

As he clocks 73, he is rededicating himself to the service of his fatherland. As president of all Nigeria, he shoulders the burden and constitutional responsibility of repositioning the country across the sectors. Like he often said, he does not deserve pity, or even praise, because he voluntarily applied for the topmost job.

The President is thanking God for His mercies and renewing his hope for a better nation. He is urging Nigerians to pray for continued unity, peace and progress of Nigeria. Tomorrow is his birthday. But there is no funfair.

A special breed and national asset, Tinubu is meant for the ardous tasks in these challenging times. It is consistent with his antecedents. Either in private life as a board guru, in politics as an organiser and mobiliser, or public office as an elected official, he has been a solution centre.

He is full of boundless energy and drive as a great manager of men and resources, an astute administrator, a progressive to the core, loyal party stalwart, a detribalised leader, a bridge builder, and an apostle of national unity.

Only few governors of 1999/2007 are quite relevant till today. But Tinubu succeeded in building, nurturing and sustaining a formidable and time-tested structure, which had weathered  the storm and survived the stress of political adversity.

If political scientists and other researchers on leadership beam the searchlight on the enigma, the discovery would be huge: an unrelenting spirit, audacity and sagacity, organisational acumen, boldness and bravery, determination to succeed in accomplishing difficult tasks, risk taking,  discipline of mind, power of ideas, strategic thinking, focus and foresight.

Yet, his fidelity to the cherished value of friendship is legendary. So is his forgiving spirit, which is his armour. Kind-hearted and compassionate, the Jagaban Borgu is always eager to care for friends and foes alike. The President is also good at diffusing tension. He is humorous. Nothing scares him.

Many politicians want to be like the Lion of Bourdillion, who is a meticulous planner, a principled actor, visionary, a democrat, talent hunter, a philanthropist and man of the people. The question is: how many of them can afford to go through the same furnace?

Full of magnetism, he is a great debater. As he honed his skills of negotiation, consultation, persuasion, and reconciliation, they altogetherbecame invaluable assets in political relationship. Since he is willing to bow to superior arguments, Tinubu usually surrounds himself with egg heads from diverse fields. The point of departure is that he will never condone intellectual laziness and a line of action devoid of masterful logic.

A great attribute of the colourful politician is his ability to discover and mobilise talents for development. Those he has groomed for leadership roles have become vice president, governors, ministers, legislators and heads of boards and parastatals. Few of them who later betrayed or deserted him carry a great moral burden.

In 2015, Tinubu break the jinx of regional restrictions by taking. The Southwest into the mainstream politics. The move, for the first time, led to a strategic partnership that produced Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as President. The feat was repeated in 2019, with Tinubu earning the appellation of a kingmaker, godfather and benefactor.

His incisive wit and strategic thinking have always paid off in moments of grave difficulties. The difference between him and many others is that he  always anticipates challenges. Although the Federal Government waged war against him when he was governor of Lagos State, he survived the hurdles. He rallied his people behind him and displayed the acumen of an effective captain. During the conflict, he ran to the temple of justice. While other governors discontinued the processs for council creation due to the fear of federal might, Tinubu said a baby already born cannot be aborted.

The former governor worked for the welfare of Lagos. He never slept on guard. Thus, while other five Southwest colleagues were swept away by the political earthquake of 2003, he became the lone survivor and the last man standing.

Since the Third Republic when he entered politics, Tinubu has been a consistent democrat and progressive who never jumped ship. As a senator, he was not a bench warmer. He challenged the military government of Ibrahim Babangida to a duel, decrying the shift of transition timetable and the criminal annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential poll won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

As the transition programme midwifed by the Evil Genius crumbled, the political class ran into turbulence. Tinubu’s career as a federal legislator was later aborted by the Sani Abacha regime, which sacked the elected leadership.

He promptly joined the pro-democracy movement, the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), to fight for democracy. It was a lost battle. By the time civil rule was restored, the symbol of the struggle, Abiola, had died mysteriously in detention. Also, in 1999, an Army General, Olusegun Obasanjo, became president.

However, Tinubu also bounced back. As Lagos governor, he presided over an administration that was a model between 1999 and 2007. He had a 24-year development plan for the transformation of the State of Aquatic Splendour. He jecked up the internally generated revenue (IGR) from N600,000 monthly to billions, boosting the chance of the state to survive without federal allocation.

Also, Tinubu fought the infrastructural battle. He constructed roads, built hospitals and schools, created opportunities for employment and re-energised the transport sector. He initiated the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The Judiciary reform he introduced was second to none. Tinubu pioneered the payment of NECO and WAEC fees for students. When Lagos allocation was seized following the creation of additional 37 council, his creative financial re-engineering made Lagos to survive.

In 2007, he had wanted to return to the Senate, but the coast was not clear. Obasanjo was still the President.

As he began his journey to mainstream politics, he first liberated the Southwest from his conservative rivals. As from 2013/14, he galvanised like-minded opposition parties to embrace the gospel of strength in unity and team spirit. A merger, the All Progressives Congress (APC), was born. It was unstoppable. The dream of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rule the country for another 60 years was aborted.

Tinubu, the National Leader and acknowledged party financier, provided selfless leadership and the quantum of resources for the novel project. This is what is lacking in the coalition of losers scheming for an imaginary and futile alliance ahead of 2027.

The road to 2023 was rough and laced with thorns. In Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, where he met delegates from the state, he thundered: “It is my turn.” He left nothing to chances.

Tinubu endured the stress of 2023 electioneering, including the unwarranted assaults by social media hoodlums. He scaled through the primary hurdle. But there was uproar when he strategically opted for the same faith ticket. He survived the vituperations.

The campaign was also tedious and energy sapping. He traversed the length and breath of the country with his manifestos, which revealed a depth of superlative knowledge of the challenges.

During the campaigns, he had to contend with the failed naira swap and inexplicable fuel scarcity??, which pitched many against him and his party.

Tinubu was mocked by unserious rivals who hired social media commentaries to malign him. He was painted as a man weighed down with age and illness. But the president-in-waiting was full of zest, agility and balance.

On poll day, while rivals appealed to ethnic and religious jingoism, Tinubu appealed to generality of Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religion and political leaning. At the close of poll, he won in five of the six regions in a free, fair, transparent and credible election. The ‘city boy’ won the crown.

The bad losers went to court by proxy to stop him, raising eligibility questions. They crashed in the court, to the consternation of their sponsors.

The post-election battles went as far as the Supreme Court. He triumphed at last.

Right from Eagle Square, Abuja, where he was inaugurated, the nation knew where he was heading.

He confronted the subsidy barons, who wielded enormous economic influence. Since then, they have continued to fight after their initial resistance failed. The policy of subsidy removal led to hardship. But there is the assurance that Nigerians will savour the benefits in the long run.

Tinubu got the right people into the right positions. There is neither discrimination nor marginalisation of any region.

He is focused on innovation and reforms which have started yielding fruits across the critical sectors.

Unlike in the past, the President has strengthened the sub-national units with increased financial allocations. There are complaints that not all governors are judiciously utilising the funds.

The President sees the governors as partners in progress, irrespective of their party affiliations.

Tinubu has insisted on council autonomy. The goal is to foster development at the grassroots, local government being the closest to the people. Many governors are resisting this core aspect of devolution of power.

But the expected state police structure is not taking shape yet. The legislative process leading to that is slow .

The administration has resolved the long standing labour faceoff by approving N70,000 as the minimal national wage. Many states have followed suit.

The tax review has been completed and approved by the National Assembly. Now, big businessmen who evade tax has nowhere to hide.

Agriculture is receiving attention, with the development of livestock and more incentives to farmers. Food production has increased and prices are coming down.

The anti-terror was is being intensified. Terrorists are fleeing. But new groups are regrouping to reverse the gains. There is need for more intelligence gathering.

Tinubu runs an all-inclusive government that has been hailed by women and youths. Now, the National Youth Conference is taking off. It is an avenue for youths to contribute ideas to governance.

Tinubu’s intervention in Rivers State is the best. It prevented the slide into violence and chaos. The Supreme Court judgment has laid the template for impeachment of the governor by the aggrieved lawmakers. But the move would have been resisted by though guys. Already, oil pipelines were being destroyed. Bloodbath was averted by the emergency rule.

Ahead of 2027, disgruntled politicians are ganging up. They neglect the 2013/2014 merger template, opting for a short cut to failure. They neglect the spade work and wide consultations that heralded the birth of APC.

Their tactics are odd. They attack the judiciary that rescued some of them from political tribulations in the past through cheap blackmail and propaganda. Their threat is empty.

As the economy improves, the critics are disarmed. The onus is on the president to sustain the tempo and speed of economic revitalisation and recovery.

A man of history, Tinubu’s rise to fame is an act of God. He was not born into greatness; neither was greatness thrust upon him on a platter of gold. He achieved greatness through hard work, resolve, and determination. So far, he has demonstrated a huge capacity for the management of the achievements.

Born on March 29, 1952, Tinubu endured, like many others, a difficult childhood and today, he has a tale of survival to tell. His academic sojourn in the United States started in 1975 at Richard Daley College, Chicago, Illinois, where he justified himself before proceeding to Chicago State University, graduating in 1979 with a first class honours in Business Administration, specialising in Accounting and Management. In his last year, he taught the remedial tutorial classes on part-time basis. Throughout his studies, he was on the Dean’s List.

A campus politician, Tinubu was also the President of the Accounting Society in his final year. In the course of professional practice, he has traversed blue chip companies-Arthur Anderson, Deloitte Haskins, GTE Service Corporation, and Mobil Nigeria-where he was treasurer. He was a contributor to worthy social and community causes as an acclaimed philanthropist before becoming a politician of repute.

He holds the honorary chieftaincy titles of Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom, Aare of Ile-Oluji and Are-Ago of Egbaland.

Chairman House Committee on Ecological Funds, Rt. Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji has denied allegations of anti-party activities levelled against him  by the Committee of Concerned Elders for Peace under the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-West.

The lawmaker said he remain a loyal member of the Governing APC, adding that he was never at loggerheads with Senator Abdulaziz Yari, the political leader of the party in Zamfara State.

Dismissing the allegations in a statement by his media aide, Mohammed Umar in Abuja on Thursday,  Jaji said the report bythe Committee was “highly mischievous” stressing that he would never disrespect Sen Abdulaziz Yari or any leader of the party for whatever reason.

“I kept on saying this, I can never disrespect Senator Abdulaziz Yari; he is my boss. I served under him, he is one of the politicians I hold in high esteem,  I can never seek to demean him under any circumstances whatsoever”.

The statement reads: ” The attention of the Rt. • Immunity clause removal will save democracy, says Onoh

Immunity clause removal will save democracy, says Onoh

President Bola Tinubu’s former campaign spokesman in the southeast, Dr. Josef Onoh, has states the move by the National Assembly to repeal the immunity clause in Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution is a timely to save democracy and promote its entrenchment in the nation’s polity.

Onoh’s acknowledgment came on the heels of the House of Representatives second reading on the bill seeking for retention of the immunity clause for the President of Nigeria while removing it for the Vice President, the Governors and their Deputies.

Hailing the lawmakers, Onoh stated that if the members of the National Assembly want a nation where accountability and crime will be reduced, it is pertinent that they all support the removal immunity on the executives.

“Once the immunity is removed, it will limit the issues of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, going after former Governors and the Governors will accord themselves respect and decency. It’s then that proper democratic ethos would be enshrined because immunity has destroyed democracy in Nigeria and its exploited by every administration,” Onoh stated.

He recalled that he had long maintained his stand against the insertion of immunity for Governors and their deputies, stressing that the clause currently shields state governors and their deputies from prosecution, leading to unaccountability and corruption in governance.

Onoh emphasised the need to distinguish between true leaders and those who merely loot public resources, warning that if action is not taken, future generations of Nigerian youths might view looting as a legitimate career path and violent protests as a form of social entertainment.

He highlighted the importance of repealing the immunity clause, stating that “The immunity clause in Section 308 of the Nigerian Constitution is an anomaly that breeds unaccountability and corruption in governance.”

He stressed that the clause has allowed leaders to evade responsibility, leading to widespread mismanagement of public funds.

According to him: “With the withdrawal of the petrol subsidy, money is being made available to different tiers of government, both state and local. These funds are intended to benefit and improve the livelihoods of the Nigerian masses.

“In my opinion, the Nigerian experience with the immunity clause has been horrendous and traumatic, leading to bad governance and underdevelopment. I’ve always maintained that constitutional immunity serves as a protection shield or a legitimate instrument of corruption and money laundering by crooks masquerading as public officials.

Read Also: JUST IN: Reps rescind decision on bill seeking to strip VP, Governors of immunity

“In reality, the clause has not only created a class of people who are above the law, and I urge the National Assembly to repeal it and liberate Nigerians. Once this is done, it will put an end to protests and enthrone the rule of law in Nigeria.

“In as much as the governors will oppose immunity for the president alone, it is common sense to confer immunity on the president because the office of the President and decisions of the President in defence of our nation must confer the president sovereign immunity. Governors are only dealing with internal affairs, but the president deals beyond national to international affairs. The defense of immunity has rendered ineffective and impotent the machinery set up by the government through the EFCC.

“Finally, the fate of our nation is in the hands of our national assembly, this will be one of the greatest political and national milestone ever achieved since independence. We only have one country and it’s our collective responsibility to stop blaming others and represent the people because political office isn’t a job, it’s temporal and after we leave office we will all return back to the people and become part of the people. What an irony!”

Tinubu signs South-South Development Commission bill into law

President Bola Tinubu has signed the South-South Development Commission(SSDC) Bill into law, signifying a historic advancement toward equitable regional development in the country.

This significant achievement for the region results from the efforts of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (APC, Cross River South), the Chairman, Senate Committee on NDDC.

Ekpenyong, with some co-sponsors from the South-South geopolitical zone, introduced the bill (SB. 358) in 2024 to address systemic disparities in resource allocation and development. The bill w unanimous approval in the Senate.

“Today, we celebrate not just a legislative victory, but a testament to the South-South’s unwavering resolve for equity”, the Senator Asuquo.

“The new commission will finally address our region’s unique challenges—from infrastructure deficits to environmental degradation—while ensuring Cross River and all South-South states receive the resources they deserve.

“I thank President Tinubu for his commitment to regional development and my colleagues for their bipartisan support. Together, we’ve paved the way for a brighter future where no community is left behind.”

Ekpenyong previously argued that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which includes non-South-South states like Abia and Imo, diluted focus on the region’s unique challenges.

He emphasised the need for a dedicated commission to prioritise geopolitical equity over oil revenue-based allocations, ensuring all South-South states—including Cross River, which previously received minimal NDDC benefits—gain equitable access to resources.

The bill also ensures funding through federal allocations, international grants, and partnerships, bypassing the NDDC’s oil-dependent model. This structure shields the commission from fluctuations in oil prices and ensures sustained development.

Tinubu’s assent reinforces his administration’s commitment to regional empowerment, following similar approvals of the South-West and South-East Development Commissions. Senate President Godswill Akpabio lauded the bill’s passage, describing it as a catalyst for job creation and grassroots economic transformation.

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has welcomed the bill’s signing and urged the President to appoint capable leadership to the commission to ensure its effectiveness.

At 73, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stands tall as a leader whose unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress is transforming the landscape of innovation, science, and technology.

His tenure has brought a new dawn, marked by strategic appointments, groundbreaking policies, and an unprecedented drive to place Nigeria at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement.

As the Chairman of the Nigeria’s Space Council, his vision has directly influenced the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), breathing fresh life into Nigeria’s space ambitions. Under his leadership, we have witnessed a rebirth in space exploration, science, and innovation—one that is setting Nigeria on a trajectory toward global competitiveness.

Anyone familiar with President Tinubu’s leadership trajectory, from his days as Governor of Lagos State, knows he is an achiever. Politics aside, his commitment to national development and the welfare of the people has remained steadfast. His leadership is anchored on pragmatism, strategic foresight, and a results-driven approach that leaves no room for mediocrity.

He has always believed in assembling the right people to execute critical national assignments. His administration’s choice of Chief Uche Nnaji as Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology exemplifies his deep understanding of the sector’s needs. Chief Nnaji is a round peg in a round hole—a technocrat with the expertise and vision to drive Nigeria’s technological transformation.

Similarly, his appointment of Dr. Matthew Adepoju as the Director General of NASRDA reflects his dedication to revitalizing Nigeria’s space program. Dr. Adepoju has brought to the agency an innovative three-point agenda that is reshaping its future. His focus on transforming NASRDA into a modern, globally competitive institution, empowering its workforce to achieve excellence, and mainstreaming private sector participation in the space sector is already yielding tangible results. This clear roadmap is positioning Nigeria’s space Programme for greater relevance in national development and global discourse.

The transformation we are witnessing in the innovation, science, and technology sector under President Tinubu is unprecedented. Never before has there been such a determined and well-structured push to elevate Nigeria’s scientific standing. The administration’s policies are driving a more research-oriented, technology-driven economy, with increased investment in artificial intelligence, robotics, and space technology. These initiatives are not just policy statements but actionable programmes designed to bring Nigeria to the forefront of global innovation.

One of the most remarkable commitments of this administration is its support for Nigeria’s space Programme. The promise to launch more satellites is a game-changer that will revolutionize key sectors such as agriculture, security, communication, and environmental monitoring. Under the leadership of Dr. Adepoju, NASRDA is poised to maximize this opportunity to provide real-time solutions to national challenges.

The impact of President Tinubu’s leadership on NASRDA cannot be overstated. The agency, once facing significant operational challenges, is now on a renewed path of transformation. Dr. Adepoju’s leadership has ushered in a strategic approach that is redefining space science and technology in Nigeria. By prioritizing staff development, infrastructure enhancement, and private sector involvement, NASRDA has become a powerhouse in Africa’s space sector. The agency’s increased international collaborations and technological advancements underscore Nigeria’s commitment to becoming a space-faring nation.

The benefits of these efforts will be far-reaching. From precision agriculture to improved disaster management, enhanced security intelligence, and better internet connectivity, Nigeria’s space program is set to play a critical role in national development.
