SDP youths reject El-Rufai’s defection, accuse him of political hijack

A youth coalition within Nigeria’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected the defection of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, alleging that he aims to hijack the party for personal political interests.

El-Rufai, who resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday following months of discussions with opposition leaders, officially joined the SDP earlier this week.

However, his entry has sparked strong opposition from some party members, particularly the SDP Youths and Supporters Coalition.

In a statement on Friday, the coalition’s president, Comrade Abdulsamad Bello, denounced El-Rufai as “unfit and morally unqualified” to be in the SDP, citing what he described as the former governor’s “anti-democratic record” while in office.

“We reject El-Rufai’s entrance into our party in its entirety. He has come not as a reformer but as an undertaker, seeking to bury the SDP before it even has the chance to grow,” Bello said.

The coalition also criticised the party’s leadership for what it described as a “clandestine deal” that allowed El-Rufai’s defection, warning that his presence could destabilise the party.

“El-Rufai has never believed in democracy. His history of suppressing opposition voices, sidelining party members, and enforcing his will through coercion is well known,” Bello added.

“It is shocking that the leadership of our party would allow itself to be infiltrated by someone whose tenure in office was marked by impunity, authoritarianism, and disregard for democratic values.”

The former governor’s entry into the party has already sparked tensions. On Wednesday, his supporters staged a demonstration at the SDP national headquarters in Abuja, calling for the resignation of the party’s national secretary, Olu Agunloye.

According to the youth coalition, this is evidence of El-Rufai’s attempt to seize control of the party’s leadership.

“Barely days after joining our party, El-Rufai is already pushing for a leadership change. He is demanding that Olu Agunloye resigns, even when the party has its own internal mechanisms for handling such matters. This is a clear sign of his desperation to control the SDP and mould it in his own image,” the statement added.

The group accused El-Rufai of using the SDP as a platform for his personal political ambitions, particularly in light of his recent criticisms of President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

“El-Rufai’s resignation from the APC and his calculated entry into the SDP is nothing but a desperate attempt to reinvent himself politically,” Bello added.

“The same man who once insulted opposition leaders and dismissed them as irrelevant is now seeking refuge in their midst. His hypocrisy knows no bounds.”

  • Okupe: A maverick of modern Nigeria

Okupe: A maverick of modern Nigeria

    By Banwo Mayowa

My dear mentor, principal, and father figure Dr Doyin Okupe  was, in many respects, the very embodiment of a renaissance man—a physician, a political raconteur, and an indefatigable champion of nation-building. Born on 22 March 1952 into the illustrious Agbonmagbe royal lineage, his early life foretold a destiny not only marked by regal distinction but also by a penchant for trailblazing innovation and wry commentary. His journey, from the hallowed halls of Igbobi College and the University of Ibadan to the bustling corridors of Lagos’ political and medical spheres, reads like a masterclass in resilience and reinvention.

In his medical career, Dr Okupe was more than a practitioner; he was a visionary who co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre and launched “Life Mirror”—Nigeria’s inaugural health-focused newspaper. These endeavours were not mere professional milestones but veritable declarations of his belief that enlightenment and healing must go hand in hand. His approach, often laced with subtle wit, served as a clarion call to both his peers and the public, affirming that serious work need not be devoid of humour or human touch.

Transitioning seamlessly into the realm of politics, he became an influential force in shaping modern Nigerian discourse. As the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention and later as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr Okupe demonstrated that, in a country where political rhetoric frequently bordered on theatrical farce, one could wield words as both sword and salve. His acerbic wit and incisive commentary not only cut through bureaucratic red tape but also redefined the very essence of political communication.

Dr Okupe’s career was not without its trials. He weathered legal storms and public controversies with the same aplomb that characterised his public service. Each challenge—be it a courtroom battle or a media skirmish—served only to refine his resolve and sharpen his already prodigious intellect. His victories were not merely personal triumphs; they were contributions to the fabric of a nation striving for excellence in both its political and educational sectors.

On a more personal note, I  had the distinct and singular honour of serving as his aide since 2016 until his demise. In that time, he transcended the conventional boundaries of a professional relationship, regarding me not merely as an employee but as a son. His paternal warmth and mentorship imbued my life with a sense of purpose, underscoring his unique ability to blend leadership with familial care.

The void left by his untimely departure—a loss felt deeply across the political and educational arenas—is as poignant as it is irreplaceable. His death did not merely signal the end of an era; it left a gap in the national discourse, a silence where his witty repartee and sagacious insights once resonated. Nigeria, a country indelibly shaped by his influence, now mourns the passing of a man who transformed governance into an art form.

As we reflect on the multifaceted legacies of Dr Adedoyin Ajibike Okupe, we remember a man who defied convention and whose very presence was a testament to the transformative power of intellect, humour, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His life was a brilliant interplay of challenges met with victories, setbacks overcome with grace, and a career that, quite literally, changed the country.

I will greatly miss you sir. Until we meet to part no more.

  • Delta APC’s quest for unity, cohesion

Delta APC’s quest for unity, cohesion

    By Kennedy Bienose

By now, it should be crystal clear to all students of politics, especially unbiased members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, that the Leadership Council (by the way, this unconstitutional political contraption would have been inaugurated by now if not for the swift decisive intervention of the National Working Committee) being proposed by some leaders as panacea for peace and unity among stakeholders of the Party is decidedly skewed against one target: Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, former Deputy President of the Senate and gubernatorial candidate in 2023 general elections.

An objective review of the event staged recently at Ughelli to welcome Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru back APC is all that one needs to reach this valid inference.

At the Sunday, March 9, 2025, event, leader after leader who spoke wilfully avoided referencing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or how the party’s hegemony and asphyxiating approach to governance has underdeveloped the oil-rich state. Nobody dared to utter a word about the astronomical inflow of federal allocations in recent times with no corresponding development on ground. The opposition and antagonistic instincts in all of these leaders suddenly died that day.

A demon, sadly, must have sat on their respective tongue.

    Or, so it seemed.

Ironically, the same leaders who, even as opposition symbols, were very loud in their silence about the ruinous PDP, sounded vitriolic and unbridled in their veiled verbal assault on one of their own. In fact, their vitupetations were as torrential as they were scathing.

Like a festering sore, their bileful venom became a seething denominator of their respective remarks.

Listening to these supposed leaders of the Party, one would have mistaken the event for a PDP gathering.

Tactically speaking, I think it was. I strongly suspect that it was all a decoy, though the level of success at masking the event is open for debate.

The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo (SAN), did not disappoint.

For an opposition figure who had publicly endorsed Governor Sheriff Oborevweri at his son’s wedding reception in Asaba, it was only natural that he avoided speaking ill of the PDP like a plague.

Even the glaring insidious slow pace of governance of this incompetent incumbent administration escaped his radar.

Yet, he was very vehement in declaring that “this Party belongs to all of us, not for one person” as if the ‘ownership’ of the Party was an issue. Would the Party faithful who had thronged the venue be gathered if they felt alienated in any way? Didn’t even President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Leader of the Party, reportedly declare that there was no leadership vacuum in the Delta State Chapter of the Party?

Why was such a needless point so important to emphasise on a defection ground?

The only politically expedient statement credited to the Honourable Minister at that occassion was his misplaced optimism that Mr. President’s re-election come 2027 was a fait accompli.

How the divisive politics he apparently promoted with both his disposition and utterances at the event will yield such an electoral outcome, more so that he is reputed to be grossly deficient in grassroots affinity and support, leaves a sour taste in the mouth.

Not surprisingly, the Honourable Minister’s example turned out to be a sacred template as speaker after speaker literally hurled their verbal missiles at the same imaginary sole administrator of the Party, vouchsafing no word against the PDP that they hope to unseat in 2027.

From the member representing Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, the Reverend Francis Waive, who, like the minister, had openly endorsed Governor Oborevweri for a second tenure; to the State Chairman of the party, Elder Omeni Sobotie; to the pioneer Leader and Governorship candidate in 2015, Olorogun O’tega Emerho; to a former Minister of State of Niger Delta and Director-General, APC governorship Campaign Council in 2023, Elder Godsday Orubebe; to the Executive Director of NEXIM Bank, Stella Okotete, and so on, none offered any critique of the PDP-led administration in the state. Yet, they were unanimous in casting aspersions on an unnamed political common ‘enemy.’

Even the way the new entrant and serial governorship contestant, Chief Ogboru, spoke against this same imaginary political foe, left many discerning observers wondering whether his defection was altruistic or he had just been recruited to swell the ranks of unrepentant haters of a common enemy. Such palpable pettiness was totally needless, and must be avoided if the Party must avoid the mistakes of the past and wax stronger.

Significantly, the political import of the Ughelli jamboree and show of shame was not lost on the prying PDP. Barely had the event ended when Ossai Ovie Success, an appointee of Governor Oborevweri and PDP frontline propagandist, penned a disjointed article to taunt the organisers and proponents of the leadership council who spoke at the event.

In the piece titled:”How Sheriff Successes Wipe Out APC’s Hopes, Despite Ogboru’s Defection”, the Governor’s media aide did a forensic analysis of the remarks made at that event and reached a conclusion that the event defeated its very essence. Precisely, he noted that “it seemed like every leader who took the microphone had something positive to say about Governor Oborevweri’s perfomarce”, infering that it was “a testament to Gov. Oborevweri’s exceptional leadership and his commitment to serving the people.” He even enthused that, considering the tacit endorsement of these opposition figures, Governor Oborevweri’s re-election bid was steadily on course. Haba!

But who can fault or blame this opportunistic PDP apologist for this blatant wholesale mockery of our dear Party and its leaders? Unlike the leaders who converged on Ughelli to ventilate vengeful animosity, the former Deputy President of the Senate and charismatic Leader of the APC in Delta State, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, just concluded a tour of the 25 local government areas to, ostensibly, thank Party faithful for their steadfastness and re-energize the grassroots base of the Party. It bears mentioning that, through out the tour which he personally bankrolled, the Obarisi of Urhobo Land, insulted or castigated no leader of the Party.

Instead, he spoke as the unmistakable authentic voice of opposition: indicting the PDP and demanding accountability from the Governor with regards to the over N1trillion allocations he has received since assuming office.

His salvo so rattled the PDP-led government that the Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, went into overdrive in his desperate efforts to debunk some of the salient issues raised.

Leadership, at any level, is functional, not titular.

Between a man whose sagacious leadership culminated in the Party winning two senatorial seats, one House of Representatives, and seven House of Assembly seats in the 2023 general elections and a college of self-styled leaders who appear hellbent on settling old political scores than advancing a common cause, the people shouldn’t have any difficult zeroing-in on who can – and should – lead them.

It is about time these leaders jettisoned their ego and sacrificed personal ambition on the altar of collective interest.

Fostering harmony and cohesion within Delta APC ahead of the 2027 election circle is not rocket science.

Instead, it is a collective responsilibity that has become imperative for the realization of the common good. Insisting on an unconstitutional Leadership Council, driven by some bile-filled vengeful proponents with a predetermined outcome as can be gleaned from the Ughelli event, shouldn’t be the only pathway to unity.

A cocktail of sincere reconciliation, wholesome integration, and selfless sacrifice will do the magic – any day, any time.

  • Constituents blast Natasha over alleged sexual harassment

Constituents blast Natasha over alleged sexual harassment

Constituents of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in Kogi Central have passed a vote of no confidence in her.

They accused her of always using sexual harassment as a favorite card, saying she is a serial blackmailer.

In a statement on Wednesday, indigenes of Kogi Central under the aegis of the Ebira Youth Leaders Forum (EYLF) said they are disgusted and disappointed that their representatives has refused to be a good ambassador of Ebira people, projecting good upbringing that reflects in the conduct of Ebira people.

The group in the statement by its General Secretary, Dr. Adoza Dahiru, wondered why the sexual allegation against the Senate President only emerged after she was removed from the Senate Committee on Local Content and later an internal rearrangement that saw her seat changed.

They accused her of deliberately attempting to drag the reputation of Akpabio and the exalted office of the Senate President to the mud with nefarious intents.

“The events panning out in the Senate in recent times, with our own representative at the centre stage is very disgraceful and generally casts we the cultured and mannered people of Ebira ethnic nationality in a bad light.

“This is a woman who just through the intervention of the judiciary found herself in the Senate but instead of drawing an agenda rooted on effective representation of the people, she has found a trade in demeaning the revered office of the number three citizen of our dear country.

“It is on record that her series of sexual harassment blackmail against top figures in the psst have all ended up unproven. A former presidential aide Reno Omokri; former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye, former governor of Kogi State Yahaya Bello and several others are some of her victims of blackmail which were never proved.

“We hereby pass a vote of no confidence on her for not only projecting us in a bad light but for performing extremely poorly as a representative of the people.

“Apart from solar street lighting and establishment of five Mini Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta Local Government, Kogi which we know to be an initiative of President Bola Tinubu in her constituency, no significant project is traceable to her. The Senate is not a place for those who only want play to gallery in front of the cameras,” the group said.

The Ebira youth leaders said her conduct is primarily the reason women Senators are not standing with her.

They urged her to face the suspension and use the opportunity to study Senate rule and stop scavenging for solutions where none exist, saying the people of Kogi Central will take a decision on her after the completion of her suspension.

  • Pastor Reuben Initiative, APC stakeholders unite to take over Bayelsa in 2027

Pastor Reuben Initiative, APC stakeholders unite to take over Bayelsa in 2027

Chief Reuben Wilson, founder of the Pastor Reuben Initiative for Good Leadership and Accountability (PRIFGLA), has called on APC faithful in Bayelsa State to unite and prepare for the 2027 elections.

Wilson, a member of the Governing Council of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, emphasised the importance of bringing party members together to take over governance in the state.

According to Wilson, the APC clearly won the last election in Bayelsa but the PDP took over governance through unconventional means, saying that with unity and preparation, the APC can successfully take over the state and maintain power at the centre.

Wilson praised President Bola Tinubu’s performance, stating that he has done incredibly well and deserves the party’s support and encouraged party members to work together to deliver Bayelsa State for Tinubu in 2027.

The meeting, which brought together unit coordinators, ward coordinators, constituency, senatorial, local government, leadership of the Initiative, women leaders, men, state working committee, and other groups, aimed to rally support for the APC’s mission to take over the state. Wilson challenged party members to go back to their wards, convince people to join the APC in order to secure victory for the party come 2027.

He lamented the situation whereby some political leaders who were given appointments empower members of the opposition while APC members are left to suffer. “You cannot empower your opponent to fight against you; it is a bad political calculation that will come back to haunt you, and I urge those involved to have a rethink,” urging party leaders with appointments and resources to empower members.

He emphasised that the time to plan and take over governance in Bayelsa is now, and if the party fails to act, they will miss their chance.

Bayelsa APC chairman, Barr. Dennis Otiotio, commended Pastor Reuben Wilson for coming up with a support group that seeks to rally support for the party, saying that Pastor Reuben alone has empowered over 1,000 APC faithfuls.

Speaking through the APC Organizing Secretary, Dr. Coronation Tokpo, Otiotio stressed the need for the party to be united and speak with one voice in order to wrest power from the PDP come 2027.

He noted that the APC leadership is concerned about little divisions in the party but assured that the APC is doing all it can to resolve differences to ensure that all party leaders are united ahead of the elections. An APC stalwart in Bayelsa State, Williams Alamene, urged members to jettison their political differences and work together to take over power in 2027, as according to him, Bayelsa will fare better in terms of development with an APC-elected governor. The APC Senatorial Youth Leader, Donny Sigah, described Pastor Reuben Wilson as a passionate and selfless leader who can deny himself to empower his followers, adding that with leaders like Pastor Reuben Wilson, the APC has a chance to win the 2027 elections. The Director-General of the Pastor Reuben Initiative for Good Leadership and Accountability (PRIFGLA), Eseimokumo Frank Soko, said the Initiative is formed to galvanize support for the APC in line with its slogan “United for Progress.” Soko pointed out that Pastor Reuben Wilson has taken it upon himself to unite members through the initiative and the empowerment of thousands of party supporters, as he believes that is the only way the party can take over in 2027.

  • El-Rufai and his 2027 calculations

    El-Rufai and his 2027 calculations

Former Kaduna State Governor Nosiru El-Rufai has left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (PDP). What is he up to? Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on the politics of defection and his 2027 calculations.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, ‘accidental’ civil servant, vocal politician and former governor of Kaduna State, has carried out his threat to defect from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The defector is not an ideologue, and his defection was not based on ideological consideration. He is rich, but his wealth cannot match the quantum of human and material resources available to his former party. He left a big party for a smaller and struggling platform with limited prospects.

His departure from the ruling party was not beyond expectation. He had complained about some policies of the party on the pages of newspapers. “APC has left me,” he declared a month ago, hinting about his next move.” Apart from arrogating an exclusive numerical voting power and strength to the North during elections, he also tried to pose as the leader of an impending northern onslaught, warning that in two years time, the North will not vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.

But, other nothern leading lights from the region disagreed, saying that he only expressed a personal opinion. APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje rejected El-Rufai’s allegation that the North was neglected, describing it as a figment of imagination. He said the president, through his inclusive policies, have given northerners a sense of belonging.

Having been left in the cold during the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) by President  Tinubu, the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister has not adjusted to life outside power.

As a founding member of APC, the turn of events is worrisome to some of his supporters, who are not likely to jump ship like him. El-Rufai had blamed his exclusion, more from the government, but less from the party, to the alleged plot hatched by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, his Fulani kinsman from Adamawa State, who arguably became more influential than him after the 2023 polls.

When it was evident that he had lost the nomination for a ministerial slot in the administration,  he was worried. His ego was deflated. He attracted public sympathy. The feeling was that after he had said that he was not interested in serving as a minister, he was persuaded to accept nomination by the party leader and he actually showed up for screening at the Senate. Many thought the Power portfolio was for him.

However, 24 days is a long time in politics. The table turned against him on the slippery political field. Sources said El-Rufai was consequently asked to nominate another person for the slot. Yet, in his diminishing camp of supporters in Kaduna and other places, the missed opportunity was a big blow and a sort of dashed hope for cronies who had wished to make an in-road into the administration.

Mixed reactions have trailed his defection to the SDP, a party that came fourth in the last presidential election. It could not be ascertained whether he discussed his move with his former leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and colleagues in the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). Analysts have pointed out that he left APC to galvanise the opposition and align interest with previous political foes who are united by the motive to work against President Tinubu in 2027.

El-Rufai has been described as a clever and controversial actor, whose political life had reflected a focus and resolve to succeed as an exponent of conditional loyalty and symbol of ethnic bullying.

To the SDP, El-Rufai is a big catch. He is a household name in political circles associated with some past political battles. But his new party is not a formidable platform, although it has two senators who borrowed it during the 2023 polls.

SDP presidential candidate in the last general election, Adebayo Adewole, who once castigated him as a symbol of ethnic and religious bigotry in a plural country thirsty for unity in diversity, acknowledged his strengths and weaknesses. He said El-Rufai would need to work on those weaknesses.

Adewole, a lawyer and businessman, described the former governor as a competent and hardworking public servant, whose skills, experience and energy are needed for effective governance. He said the defection has met the expectation of the SDP, whose strategy is to woo popular politicians into the fold as it prepares to tackle Tinubu in the next election. To him, El-Rufai is an asset to the opposition.

Some politicians and commentators do not share these views. Sheu Sani, a human rights activist and a senator from Kaduna in the first term of El-Rufai as governor, described the defection as a good radiance to a bad rubbish. He described the venerable defector as a civilian dictator, who is guilty of his allegations against the APC.

Sani said El-Rufai has no respect for internal democracy, recalling that when he was governor, the party chairman, secretary, elected local government chairmen and most of the elected public officials were handpicked by him.

“I left APC because of him. If he returns to the APC, I will leave again,” he added.

Sani predicted that El-Rufai will become a divisive factor in his new abode because of his domineering nature.

Kaduna APC welcomed the defection with a sense of relief. Its Secretary, Yahaya Pate, said: “We are unperturbed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection to another party. Our focus in Kaduna is on how to deliver the state to both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani come 2027.”

A political scientist, Prof. Jideofor Adibe of Nasarawa State University, Nasarawa, said El-Rufai has achieved a motive, adding that his goal is relevance, which he believes SDP can guarantee. But he pointed out that many percieved him as a polarising force in the polity.

Critics also doubted if his defection would have much negative impact on the APC, which is waxing strong. He condemned transactional ambition. The Professor contented that instead of solo efforts, mergers are better.

To many observers, El-Rufai is a complex personality; in a breath very principled, and in another dimension politically unstable. He is an arrogant, clever and an aggressive operator, blessed with persuasive talents and organisational ability crucial for mobilisation under a virile leadership.

Eminent scholar, the late Prof. Oladipo Akinkugbe,  who sighted El-Rufai at a function in Lagos, said he suspected that the first class graduate of Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, was one of his troublesome students on rampange when he was ‘stoned’ as vice chancellor with pure water. He insisted that El-Rufai was at the forefront. The claim could not be ascertained. At the event, El-Rufai just smiled.

Outside school, El-Rufai has not been dumb. In public life, he has really excelled.

El-Rufai first tasted power when former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar appointed him as as an economic advisor in 1998.

His successor, President Olusegun Obasanjo later appointed El-Rufai as the inaugural director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises and Secretary of the National Council of Privatisation where he spearheaded the privatisation of  government owned corporations under the supervision of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In July 2003, he was appointed the FCT Minister. He insisted on the implementation of the original masterplan. With the establishment of the Abuja Geographic Information System, the federal capital became the first municipality in Nigeria with a computerised land register and information system.

After El-Rufai’s appointment was approved by the Senate, he alleged that former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu and Senator Jonathan Zwingina asked for $414,000 bribe before his nomination as a minister was approved. Both senators denied the accusation.

The Senate Public Accounts Committee accused him of paying exorbitant salaries to staff without proper approval. El-Rufai retorted: “Silence is the best answer to a fool.” The Senate was enraged. Obasanjo apologised on his behalf. When it was rejected, he had to go to the Senate to tender a personal apology.

As FCT Minister, El-Rufai demolished 945 buildings and settlements in a bid to sanitise the territory. The residence of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)National Chairman, Senator Ahmadu Ali, in Asokoro, built over a water trunk line, was not spared.

At the twilight of the administration  El-Rufai presided over a ministerial/administrative panel which indicted his former boss, Atiku.

In 2008, he travelled abroad. When he came back, he enlisted in the CPC, serving as its secretary. When CPC fused with other parties to form APC, he became a legacy member. In 2015, he became governor, defeating former Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero of the PDP. He was reelected in 2019.

As governor, he embarked on the reforms of the civil service, reduced the number of ministries and departments, implemented free education at primary and secondary school levels, and blocked financial leakages. His decision to confuct test for teachers sparked a row between him and the teachers’ union.

El-Rufai rendered a vital service to APC and Nigeria when the committee he chaired recommended the restructuring of the polity. The report was dumped into the dustbin.

As governor, he often stormed Lagos to fire salvos at the APC National Leader, who he accused of domineering influence. He decried what he described as monopolisation of power and lack of internal democracy. Party loyalists and other Lagosians ignored the partisan incitement.

Those who decribed him as a Fulani irredentist loathed his statement in defence of tribal interest, when he warned soldiers in the line of duty to know their limitations.

“We will write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan payable one day no matter how long it takes,” he tweeted.

His remarks on religion were also labelled by christian bodies as a “divisive, bigoted, hateful and completely unstatesmanlike declaration of Islamic political supremacism in Kaduna State and Nigeria.”

Around 2017, El-Rufai, accompanied by Rotimi Amaechi, former Transportation minister, held a parley with reporters at Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, to collate facts on Buhari’s popularity in the Southwest. To their surprise, they found out that the key and gate to the Southwest remained Asiwaju Tinubu. In fact, a reporter retorted: “Why are you coming to us to ask questions about the strength of Buhari in the Southwest,or whether the people of the zone will vote for him in 2019? In 2014/15, you people went to Bourdillion to see Asiwaju. Why are you coming to us instead of going to meet your National Leader?” Amaechi kicked at the comment. But, El-Rufai was jotting down the observations. During the Tinubu birthday that followed in 2018, Buhari stormed Lagos, proclaiming Tinubu as master strategist.

There was no evidence to suggest that El-Rufai was rooting for Tinubu ahead of the presidential primary. But, when certain elements in the party claimed that Buhari had anointed Senator Ahmed Lawan, El-Rufai led some governors to the former president to affirm support for zoning.

A predecessor-successor crisis broke out in Kaduna, shortly after El-Rufai left office. Today, he and his sucessor do not see eye to eye.

What difference can he now make in SDP, having left APC, his natural habitat, which he would be attacking as the polity warms up for 2027?

SDP is a small party, and it is wrong to describe the current SDP as the  incarnate of the Moshood Abiola’s SDP of the Third Republic.

The party has limited tentacles, being majorly a borrowed platform, like the Labour Party (LP), and place of temporary refuge for aggrieved chieftains from the APC and PDP. In the National Assembly and across the states, SDP is a minority of minorities.

What is El-Rufai’s future ambition? President or Vice president?

How Abiodun is fighting infrastructure battle

    By Femi Ogbonnikan

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have a shared vision for infrastructure development as a driver of economic growth. By focusing on road network infrastructure, in particular, they hope to achieve great economic transformations for the country. Additionally, considering the context of Ogun State’s development, Governor Abiodun has always emphasized the importance of infrastructure development and community interconnectivity.

Penultimate Saturday, he recorded a significant milestone in his desire for infrastructure transformation when President Tinubu flagged off the expansion of Lagos-Ibadan-Sagamu Expressway in pursuit of his renewed hope agenda.

The project serves as a booster to the existing symbiotic relationship between Lagos and Ogun states. As the Lagos’s explosive population continues to increase exponentially and increasingly becoming choky, Ogun state servers as a buffer, absorbing exodus of people seeking for affordable accommodations.

Without a good road network, connecting the two states, it would have been impossible to check and moderate the rapidly growing population of the nation’s commercial nerve centre.  Official report reveals that around 6,000 people arrive in Lagos daily, with nearly 3,000 of them settling in the city without providing any known addresses. Currently, Lagos has an estimated population of 27 million. By 2035, its projected population will be close to 25 million inhabitants, according to the World Population Review. Lagos hosts one of the biggest ports in Africa and it is also a major commercial and financial centre on the continent.

With the increasing infrastructural developments that are planned in the long term, Lagos and Ogun states are expected to continue to attract international businesses. Just as Lagos government is proposing a new international airport close to Epe axis to complement the existing airport at Ikeja, so also is Abiodun administration tirelessly working towards the completion of the Gateway International Cargo Airport, Ilishan-Remo, for the commencement of full commercial flight operations.

The Federal Government’s initiative expanding the Lagos end of the ever-busy expressway aligns with the broader objective of joint border development between Lagos and Ogun State for free human and vehicular movements. While performing the official take off of the reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Dual Carriageway, section 1, and section 1 of the Lagos-Sagamu Expressway at Sagamu, President Tinubu said the project, which would be completed in 24 months, would cover underpasses at Kara, Wawa, Magboro, and Arepo, while flyover bridges would be constructed at Kilometer 16 around the Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) and Kilometer 37 at Makun around Sagamu.

Additionally, the President informed that Pedestrian bridges would be constructed at Arepo, Magboro, NASFAT, Deeper Life, and Redemption Camp, while the construction of the 60 kilometers remaining portion of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway from Sagamu Interchange to Itele would be flagged off to ensure the safety of road users.

The President, who was represented by Governor Abiodun, acknowledged the strategic importance of the road as the busiest, providing a direct link between Lagos, the commercial capital of the nation, and the 17 southern states of the federation. He said: “The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is not just another road; it is the busiest highway in Nigeria and the gateway to the hinterland, serving as the primary link between Lagos, the nation’s commercial capital, and the rest of the country.

“The Federal Government is committed to leveraging our natural resources by linking rural roads to urban centers, commercial hubs, and industrial corridors. The strategic roles align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to rebuilding, expanding, and modernizing our national road networks, railways, and airports, which is critical to the nation’s economic prosperity.”

President Tinubu further emphasised the importance of road infrastructure as fundamental to the socio-economic development of any nation. Not only that it sustains economic growth, it also facilitates mobility, and enhances quality of life.

He, however, noted that the road had suffered neglect under successive administrations, resulting in loss of lives as a result of its poor condition. He said that by upgrading and expanding the expressway, the Federal Government aimed to achieve significant reduction in travel time, improve efficiency and productivity, enhance safety, and facilitate ease of doing business in the country.

The president maintained that the inclusion of the Sagamu-Ore in this phase further underscored the essence of his Renewed Hope Agenda and the vision of ensuring that national road networks meet international standards and support aspirations for economic expansion and industrial development.

Minister of Works, Senator (Engr) Dave Umahi, lent credence to President Tinubu’s commitment to road network transformation in his address at the event. He said: “In the Lagos-Ibadan project, we have section 2, phase 2, and part of what we are doing today is that phase 2, which was awarded to Julius Berger. When we could not resolve our differences in terms of price, we terminated the job.

“What we are doing today is part of the Lagos-Ibadan project, which is phase 2, and it includes the works on Magboro underpass, Warewa underpass, Arepo underpass, Sagamu, and Iperu; that is 12 kilometers by 2, which is 24.

“The next phase of this job is also 48 kilometers by 2, that takes off from Iperu and gets to Ijebu-Ode. That is the Sagamu-Ore road.”

The Minister directed that no payment should be made to contractors without an Advanced Payment Guarantee (APG) certificate, adding that it must be valid at the time of payment to the contractor, and the Performance Bond must also be valid before any payment is made to the contractor.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Works, Hon. Akin Alabi, said the House was poised to work with the Ministry to ensure that Nigerians have access to good road networks, stating that the road is not just for the people of Ogun State alone as it would affect the economic lives of Nigerians.

There is no gain in recognising that democracy needs to be celebrated, glorified, hailed, and globally appreciated as a system that allows the emergence of sensational individuals who are simply amazing and awesome and keep improving humanity’s lives.

We luckily get the opportunity to vote for people with solidifying power and constitutionally backed power and resources to do the needful, initiating policies and programmes that are genuinely meant to bring positive and commendable impact on the lives of the teeming populace through the efforts and policies of practising democratic culture in its finest.

The process led to electing a personality, doing what was needed, and providing countless projects that practically changed the basic sphere of human existence with unimaginable goodies before this unique time.

An undisputable mastery worker, giving a new meaning to our democratic dispensation. Senator Barau Jibrin is the Senate’s deputy president, representing Kano North in our esteemed Senate Chamber.

Is indeed amazing and simply awesome how such a representative is dolling out positive and mind-blowing projects which undeniably made his Senatorial Zone be rated and counted as the most beneficial and democratically developed zone in the country going by the countless projects they are daily gaining from such a unique and extraordinary Senator that has distinguished and separated himself from the bunch in our present democratic dispensation.

Revealing or stating his numerous projects and people-oriented activities would mean repeating what is globally known and documented for prosperity.

As such, the piece would focus on his latest activity, which revolves around turning the lives of 558 young farmers whose lives and standard of living are about to be changed for the betterment of their families, society, state and nation.

Young farmers who would be glorified provided five million naira loan each for agricultural purposes aimed at boosting the nation’s farm sector and its powerful impact on producing the final output after harvest.

Five young farmers will be selected from each of the 186 local government areas in the seven states that make up the North West geopolitical zone to enter farming this year, for a total of 558 young farmers. Applications have already been opened for the selection.

In partnership with the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), the young farmers will be given between N1m and N5m loans to cultivate rice or maize this farming season. Tagged the Barau Agricultural Revolution in North West (BIARN), a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed between BIARN and BOA to this effect.

It’s commendable that the federal government is undergoing an agricultural revolution in the country, which is aimed at boosting our agricultural production. The northern part of the country is the major beneficiary, having been dominant in that particular field.

And at a period like this, where the crucial aspect of modern agricultural transformation is been supported entirely by the federal government aim to bring back the lost glory of our agricultural dominance and heritage, one individual who has the foresight and patriotic zeal to ensure the revival of our agricultural dominance is all set to empower the selected individuals with five million loans each to boosts agricultural production in the country.

A noble gesture is undoubtedly set to lead to the emergence of a new set of millionaires who will be fully engaged in the agricultural sector with solid and financially empowered might, surely boosting agricultural production in the northern part of the country.

Our people are indeed blessed to have such an amazing Senator in our midst whose major preoccupation is to ensure the elevation and major transformation of his people in every sector of human endeavour. Suffice it to say vividly that the Senator has set unbreakable and undisputed records that would be difficult or even impossible to break in the long run.

His political ambitions remain solid and promising. Any future contest with the said accomplished Senator in any political office is bound to be sold out, and victory is anticipated as the voting populace is battle-ready to support and cast their valuable votes on him to guarantee the continuity of the spread of democratic goodies and creation of democratic legacy.

Fighting or challenging Barau Jibrin is any election contest tantamount to a suicidal journey for any political dreamer, no matter the stools being contested, either Senate or an elevated seat of No1. Citizen in our ancient city of Kano.

    Marks my words.
