Why I didn’t attend APC national caucus meeting, by El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has explained why he did not attend the national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

El-Rufai in his recent interview with Arise TV faulted the lack of adequate notice for the meeting, noting that he had made other plans.

The national caucus meeting of the APC is a high-level strategic gathering of the party’s top leadership, including the president, vice president, national chairman, members of the National Working Committee, state governors under the party, and key stakeholders such as former governors, ministers, and principal officers of the National Assembly.

It also allows the party leadership to align on political considerations before they are deliberated at the NEC, which includes all state governors and other key economic decision-makers.

El-Rufai during the interview said: “Unfortunately, I won’t attend the APC national caucus meeting, because I will be on my way to Cairo where I spend most of my time. I didn’t get adequate notice.

“The Constitution of our party requests 21 days or I think 14 days’ notice for this kind of national organ meeting. I don’t think that notice was given. If it was given, I don’t think I’d received such an invitation.

“I’ve my plans, and I am leaving tomorrow. Many of my friends will attend and they will give me updates, I don’t think I will miss anything.

“Ramadan is starting. I’ve made my own plans too. When the party meets, I think I’ve shouted loud and clear. So we’ll wait and see what the party will do about it. I don’t have to be there. I’m not the only member of the party that’s unhappy.”

  • I will end the suffering of Anambra people – Okonwko

I will end the suffering of Anambra people – Okonwko

All Progressives Congress (APC), frontline aspirant in Anambra governorship election, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, has assured of an end to what he described as the four-year suffering inflicted by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) administration.

He also expressed confidence that with him the party is sure of victory at the November 8 election.

Okonwko made this pledge in Abuja when chatting with newsmen after submitting the nomination and expression of interest forms purchased for him by a group under the aegis of Anambra Coalition for Progressive Change at thr party’s National Secretariat.

Okonkwo, who was optimistic of victory, boldly declared that by the grace of God he would not only win the APC primary but also the main election in November 8, to give Anambra new lease of life.

He said: “I want to tell you that after praying seeking God’s face, we have successfully submitted the completed forms. We have no doubt that we have entered other phase of the race and that we will be declared the winner after the primaries by God’s grace.”

“Yes, power belongs to God and having submitted the the forms, I totally submit to the will of God. What I am assuming is that an earthquake will erupt in Anambra to remove the rudderless incumbent governor. We will win Anambra for the APC.  We will bring the state and the South East into the APC fold.”

On why he is confident, Okonkwo said: “I am the only aspirant coming from Anambra Central, the zone where AC and ACN held sway before the party transmuted into APC. Returning to APC is a home coming for me and I am happy to be home. God made it possible for AC and ACN to win elections in Anambra Central before, using me and other men of goodwill to actualise them.

“I hope to lead the campaign and be on the ballot paper. We already have the advantage and with the support of the party and God Almighty, APC will win Anambra State governorship election.

“We have only gotten pain, sorrow and agony from Governor Chukwuma Soludo instead of his promise to reproduce Taiwan, Hong-Kong and Japan in Anambra. Why did it take him this long to start doing something about the insecurity in the State? It is medicine after many deaths and the spirit of those who lost their lives will not forgive us if we give Soludo second term ticket.”

Dismissing the insinuation of possible agreement with the presidency ahead of 2027, the governorship hopeful said: “This is the time for Anambra people to pay him back. Soludo claimed that he worked for President Tinubu during the presidential election but he did not.

“He only worked for himself. We have it on good authority that the letter written by the presidential campaign of the APC to him for a courtesy visit on him by Mr President but for 10 times, the Chief protocol of the Governor did not intentionally meet them to receive the letter. And for that reason, he could not meet the President for a handshake when he came for the campaign.

“Allowing him to win with the support of APC from Abuja, means plucking your eyes and giving it to him to see based on the promise that he will deliver 25 per cent for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Why should you go for 25 per cent when an APC sitting Governor can make him win landslide?

“We will never fall into that APGA gimmick anymore. Our president is a true party man and know that he cannot sabotage the party. We have heard that story but our message to him is that we are not buying into that APGA gimmick. There is no such arrangements. We know that APGA was led by Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu-Ojukwu, but today, there is no APGA but Solutions.”

  • APC NWC disclaims ‘Leadership Council’ in Delta, as Omo-Agege, Nwaoboshi distance selves from contraption

APC NWC disclaims ‘Leadership Council’ in Delta, as Omo-Agege, Nwaoboshi distance selves from contraption

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclaimed the setting of a “Leadership Council” for the party in Delta State.

In a statement on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, disavowed the council.

It said: “The attention of the National Working Committee (NWC) of our great Party has been drawn to reports circulating in sections of the media regarding the inauguration of the Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC) Leadership Council ‘approved by the National Leadership of our great Party.’

“This is to clarify that the NWC did not grant approval for the inauguration or operation of the “Leadership Council” in the Delta State Chapter of our Party, as claimed by reports.

“The said “Leadership Council” is not a body created or recognised under the Party’s Constitution which clearly spells out the statutory organs, structures and committees of the Party, and their respective powers and functions. The “Leadership Council” is not one of such constitutional organs, ad hoc – structures or committees of the Party.”

In an earlier statement, Valentine Onojeghuo Delta APC  Publicity Secretary, claimed that the ‘national leadership” of APC has approved the “inauguration of the Delta APC Leadership Council under the co-chairmanship of Olorogun Festus Keyamo, SAN and Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege CFR.

The leadership council was slated for inauguration on March 8, 2025, according to Onojeghuo.

This effectively puts paid to the controversial move set up a parallel collegiate arrangement in the running of Delta APC.

The leader of APC in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi among other top leaders have dissociated themselves from the purported parallel “College of Leaders.

They said in a statement: “We, the undersigned, are shocked and outraged to discover our names inexplicably linked to a purported Delta APC Leadership Council in a Notice of Inauguration signed by Valentine Onojeghuo, Esq., which is currently in circulation.

“We categorically and unequivocally deny any involvement, association, or knowledge of this council, and we condemn in the strongest terms the blatant and egregious attempt to falsely affiliate us with this illegitimate and unconstitutional entity.

“The creation of this council is a flagrant and reprehensible affront to the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the principles of democracy. Its establishment is a brazen and unauthorized act that contravenes the party’s constitution and the laws of Nigeria. The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that it did not grant approval for the inauguration or operation of this council, contrary to their claims.

“Furthermore, we do not support the proposal that the College of Leaders should nominate party executives and select party candidates. This proposal contradicts our party’s constitution, which grants the power to elect party executives and nominate candidates solely to registered members. Our party’s constitution and extant laws clearly outline the democratic process for electing party executives and candidates, leaving no room for the College of Leaders to usurp this power.

“We therefore strongly object to our names being surreptitiously included in this document without our knowledge, consent, or participation. This is a clear and blatant violation of our rights, and an attempt to maliciously drag us into an illegal and unconstitutional venture. We will not allow our names to used to legitimize this sham contraption.

“We uphold the sanctity of the APC constitution, which emphasizes the supremacy of the party constitution for effective governance and promoting its ideals. We recognize and support all the organs established by the constitution for our State.

These organs are the legitimate and constitutional bodies that govern the affairs of the party.

“While the creators of this contraption have the right to establish their own structures or pressure groups to advance their interests, they have no right to include our names without our consent. We will not participate in or support their illegitimate and unconstitutional activities.

“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its constitution. We will continue to work tirelessly to promote the party’s interests, unity, and values. However, we will not recognize or subscribe to any non-constitutional organ, regardless of its name or claims.

“We demand that our names be immediately and unconditionally excluded from any documents or publications related to this council. We also demand that the creators cease and desist from using our names to lend legitimacy to their illegal venture.

“We urge all party members and stakeholders to reject this illegitimate council and its unconstitutional proposals. We must stand together to protect our party’s democratic foundations and uphold the rule of law.”

  • Ex-lawmaker urges FG to release allocations to reinstated Osun APC chairmen

Ex-lawmaker urges FG to release allocations to reinstated Osun APC chairmen

A former lawmaker, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on the federal government to commence the release of monthly allocations to the reinstated Osun State local government executives of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement, Oyintiloye, who represented Obokun State Constituency, criticized the local government election conducted by the state government over the weekend, calling it a waste of taxpayers’ money.

He described the election as illegal, arguing that the Appeal Court had already reinstated the sacked APC council chairmen.

He further stated that the state government would be held accountable for the resources spent on the election.

Oyintiloye urged the federal government to immediately begin releasing funds to the reinstated chairmen, emphasising that this would help fast-track grassroots development, which had been neglected since their purported sack in 2022.

With less than nine months remaining in their tenure, he stressed that the timely release of allocations would enable the chairmen to implement developmental projects effectively.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for his professionalism in handling security matters and preventing abuse of power in the state.

“I want to appeal to the federal government to start releasing the monthly allocation to the APC reinstated council chairmen in the state aof this month.”

  • 2027: No vacancy in Villa, Tinubu will serve two-term tenure – Bankole

2027: No vacancy in Villa, Tinubu will serve two-term tenure – Bankole

The national leader of Persons With Disability and member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Aare Tolu Bankole, has asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will complete his constitutionally mandated two-term tenure.

He firmly stated that “there will be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027.”

In a statement made in Abuja on Monday, Bankole advised opposition parties to focus their resources and energy on constructive engagements rather than attempts to discredit the legitimacy of President Tinubu’s administration.

He emphasized that President Tinubu remains committed to Nigeria’s transformation and sustainable development, urging the opposition to abandon any notions of unseating the President in 2027.

“Save your money and energy; there will be no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027,” Bankole counseled.

Justifying his stance, Bankole highlighted that President Tinubu’s administration has implemented far-reaching economic reforms, setting Nigeria on a path of renewal and long-term prosperity.

He acknowledged the initial challenges associated with these policies but emphasized their necessity for the nation’s growth and self-sufficiency.

Bankole reassured Nigerians that President Tinubu’s administration will continue to bring infrastructural development, revitalize key sectors, and elevate Nigeria’s status in the global economy.

“President Tinubu is fully committed to transforming Nigeria into a global economic and political powerhouse. His policies, vision, and leadership are already yielding results, and his second term will consolidate these gains,” he asserted.

On the ongoing debate surrounding the North-South rotational presidency, Bankole reaffirmed the principle’s sacrosanctity, stating that power would return to the North after President Tinubu’s eight-year tenure, thus maintaining political stability and national equity.

“Those who fantasize about truncating this established order are either ignorant of Nigeria’s political history or are deliberately sowing discord for selfish gains,” he remarked.

Taking a swipe at opposition figures who relied on unverifiable claims during the last election, Bankole described their rhetoric as clownish, unpatriotic, and divisive.

He noted that the Nigerian people now see through their pretenses, recognizing their lack of preparation and commitment to national unity.

“Their misplaced and undeserved pseudo-appeal during the last election has been exposed as nothing more than a series of comical, whimsical, and outrageous political schemes,” he added.

“As the 2027 presidential election approaches, it is evident that President Tinubu will secure a resounding victory over any opponent. His remarkable commitment to Nigeria’s transformation speaks for itself. Those considering contesting should rethink their ambition, as there is no vacancy in Aso Rock in 2027,” Hon. Bankole asserted.

He further stressed that Nigeria cannot afford a reversal of the significant gains made under Tinubu’s administration.

“The nation is on a path to renewed and sustainable glory under President Tinubu, and the vision for a prosperous Nigeria is becoming clearer for all to see,” he concluded.

    Expectations as Aiyedatiwa takes oath

Has Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa performed to expectation in the last one year? Are the people happy under his leadership? Do they have hope that the next four years will take them to eldorado? Osagie Otabor examines Aiyedatiwa’s activities in the last one year and the people’s verdict as well as expectations

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa took a fresh oath to govern Ondo State for the next four years yesterday. His supporters believed it marked the beginning of new dawn in the state and the time for Aiyedatiwa to begin implementing of his visions and good governance in the state. To them, Aiyedatiwa first year was to complete late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s term. They believed Aiyedatiwa now has the liberty to govern with a team to be solely picked by him. Aiyedatiwa has spent 14 months as Governor. He was sworn-in in December 2023 after the death of Akeredolu.

Shortly after he was sworn-in, Aiyedatiwa sacked the cabinet he inherited from Akeredolu. He had to negotiate with some heavyweight politicians in the state to form a new cabinet so that he could garner support to win the party primary. Aiyedatiwa is perhaps the first Governor to face party primary few months after emerging Governor. He won the governorship polls with a landslide making history as the first Governor to secure victory in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

In his speech to declare his intention to run for a fresh term, Aiyedatiwa said he would pursue a developmental agenda tagged State Economic Empowerment Development Strategy (SEEDS).unlike the REDEEMED agenda which was his predecessor’s policy thrust. Governor Aiyedatiwa, however, promised to harmonise all plans for economic development under SEEDS to lead to wealth creation, employment generation, sustenance of high standard of living and consequently eradicate poverty among the people. SEEDS, according to him, would enhance economic growth in the rural areas by improving productivity in agriculture, accelerate economic growth in urban areas by encouraging private enterprises and economic activities for the urban poor, improve essential infrastructure and social amenities of the State such as roads, water, electricity amongst others.

Aiyedatiwa has, however, changed his developmental agenda from SEEDS to “O’ Datiwa, O’Dirorun” or “OUR EASE.”.

    Achievements

Aides of Governor Aiyedatiwa are quick to point to ongoig construction of rural roads under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAMP) as a move to boost food production and enable farmers take their products to the markets. Road listed being constructed were the 15.5km Oda Cocoa Board – Camp 2 – Langbodo Road in Oda town, tbe Ode – Omi – Ebute Iyara in Irele LGA for the South and Ifira Akoko – Afo in Akoko South East LG for the North. Besides boosting food productions, Governor Aiyedatiwa was said to have taken steps to reduce domestic debt by 77 percent, diaburse N220m to artisans and local businesses.  In the education sector, the sum of N3.5b has been earmarked for primary school projects, N1.2b was disbursed to complete abandoned projects at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology and increment in subvention for state owned tertiary institutions. Among achievements Governor Aiyedatiwa made in the power sector included partnership with the FG on restoration of power to Ondo south, a zone that has been without power supply for 15 year,   Mass metering through O’datiwa subsidized meters, peration Light-Up Akure amongst others.

    People’s verdict

“There is low impact on infrastructure under Aiyedatiwa”, that was the position of a commercial driver who gave his name Adeboye. Adeboye said potholes dotted roads in Akure metropolis and environs despite the launching of operation zero-potholes. Adeboye said the people were yet to understand the policy thrust of Aiyedatiwa. He said Aiyedatiwa has been paying salaries and pensions.

“He has not performed. In Infrastructure, there is deficit. As a former member of the cabinet, we expected him to complete those projects. No water in Akure town. No single borehole has been sunk. Bridge connected Onyereagbumem nothing has been done. He has not done anything in the last one year. He only graded some roads.”

A social commentator, Olawale Momoh, said nothing reasonable has been achieved since Aiyedatiwa was sworn-in. He said Aiyedatiwa has been doing normal statutory things.oaying salaries and gratuities. No legacy projects. Look at sports, education. Agriculture. Health is the most terrible and then security. Look the level of insecurity on tbe state. It is as if we are going back to the early days of Akeredolu.

“The Governor seems not to be bothered. This is the first in tbe history that a Commissioner will be so powerful Every news is about Commissioner for Finance. Why is it about Commissioner for Finance. It is enough for a Governor to address the state. People are kidnapped even in the state capital.”

A civil servant who pleaded anonymity painted a picture of gloom in the Ondo civil service. She said “everything is at a stand still. Nothing is moving. No running grant in many offices. It will be foolhardy to expect anything from Aiyedatiwa’s administration.”

    Expectations

Senior Special Assistant to Aiyedatiwa on Strategic Communication, Allen Sowore, said people of Ondo State should expect unprecedented and rapid infrastructural development, a more robust and strategic approach to security, and the holistic protection of lives and property.

He continued, “Sustainable youth empowerment, economic growth, improved agricultural practices, and better education system and healthcare services will also be prioritized. I am confident that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will exceed expectations in delivering progress and prosperity.”

Spokesman for the Ondo PDP, Kennedy Peretei, said there was nothing more to expect from what he termed “stand still” government of Hon Aiyedatiwa.

He said Aiyedatiwa have failed to prove to the people of Ondo, he could deliver the dividends of democracy in the last one year.

“However, we wish to remind the Governor that, the people are suffering from his lack lustre performance. The hospitals are in dire need of personnel and equipment. The schools have no teachers, nor teaching aids. All the road projects started by his former boss, Rotimi Akeredolu have all been abandoned.

“Let him pray that his case will not look like the case of a snake that passed on top of a rock without any trace.”

To Barr. Momoh, “I don’t know what the people will expect in the next four year. A man given power on a platter of gold, he has all tbe opportunity to impress tbe people. The foundation has been laid by Akeredolu. There is nothing special we should expect. Previous Governors celebrated 100 days in office with projects. Mimiko commissioned Isikan markets and others within 100 days. People have lost confidence in governance in the state. We thought he will impress us, the reverse is the case.”

Ashiru: Olawoyin, an inspiration to politicians

Deputy Senate Leader Oyelola Ashiru has said that the late First Republic politician, Chief Josiah Olawoyin was an inspiration and a lesson to all politicians.

Ashiru, who represents Kwara South District at the upper legislative chamber, said this in Offa, Kwara State at the book launch and posthumous centenary birthday celebration of the late politician.

The event was witnessed by traditional institutions, business moguls, among other personalities.

The book, a compendium of  unnamed writers has its foreward written by a veteran journalist and former editor of the Nigerian Tribune, Banji Ogundele. Ashiru, said that the late politician was an inspiration and a lesson for us all.

The senator added that the he “was a leading light in the political trajectory of Offa and the then Northern Nigeria. It’s now a thing of pride to be a Yoruba man. A Yoruba man can now walk freely in Abuja.”

Chairman of the occasion Yusuf Ali (SAN) lamented that principled political stands have left the nation’s politics, especially, starting from the Second Republic.

Represented by Ibrahim Atofarati, the legal luminary said that the matter is made worse today because, “unlike

in the First Republic, when the political parties were mass movement and owned by all party members. Today, the political parties are virtually owned by the mighty, powerful and rich”.

Ali said that late Chief Olawoyin, by his principle political stance showed that one can be a politician with high moral values, adding that the late elder statesman refused all the juicy political offers to stay true to his political convictions.

“Chief Olawoyin used his politics to benefit his immedíate constítuency, Offa, and the larger North. He was a formidable man in the opposition camp.

“This was at a time when the opposition was plaving the role it ought to play by putting the government of the day on its toes”.

Reviewing the book, titled, J. S. Olawoyin: a century of legacy and leadership, Editor, Saturday Tribune, Dr. Lasisi Olagunju, told stories of network of relationships among Offa, Ilorin, Ibadan, and old Oyo people, as well as other tribes in the country.

“The book is well referenced and comprehensively indexed. It is a worthy testimonial in memory of a worthy Chief J. S. Olawoyin. The book has done a great justice to the life and memory of the first Asiwaju of Offa.

“It is a celebration of glorious place of Offa and its leadership in Yoruba history. I recommend the book to all leaders and aspiring leaders to know the strength of the complexity called Nigeria and to all, who currently suffer subjugation and slavery made in the Nigeria state.

“The book tells them that the masquerade that currently pursues them and pursues us would soon be tired. And they should not surrender to the marauding spirit,” he added.

The reviewer also eulogized the late elder statesman for bequeathing a worthy legacy, while he congratulated the children for allowing their father to live on through them.

  • Opposition alliance will flounder, says lawmaker

Opposition alliance will flounder, says lawmaker

House of Representatives member Wale Ahmed has said that the opposition alliance being mooted by aggrieved politicians will flounder ahead of the next general election.

He said the gang-up cannot threaten the electoral chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

Ahmed, who represents Agege Constituency in the Lower Chamber, said APC is enlarging its coast and waxing stronger ahead of 2027.

He said: “Democracy permits alliances, that is, parties, now smaller parties, working together. But the implication is that the ruling party is waxing stronger. It is a welcome development. Opposition is required in a democratic setting. It is their inalienable right to regroup, to conspire and plot.

“I speak for my party. It is enlarging its coast. It has midwifed a performing government. More opposition stalwarts are defecting to the APC, inside and outside the parliament.”

Ahmed observed that “the greatest alliance in this Fourth Republic is the alliance, indeed, the fusion of ACN, ANPP, CPP, a fraction of APGA and PDP, to produce APC.”

He described the APC as a product of determination and sacrifice by legacy leaders who were united by similarity of ideas and the resolve to serve the country.

He said APC is poles apart from the peculiar desire of some desperate politicians to get power to satisfy an ambition or ego.

Ahmed added: “Forming an alliance by self-serving politicians is a hard route. The clash of interest, the conflict of ideas, the antagonistic ambitions, and the refusal to make sacrifice are stumbling blocks.

Trust is key. They were together before, I mean those thinking about alliance now.

Read Also: Tinubu serious with Ogoni issues, says Fubara

“When the proposal for alliance is solely characterised by the propagation of particularistic agenda and projection of a single or personal interest, without utter consideration for the larget, collective and comprehensive interest of the groups and the country, the deal will flounder. That is why the targeted partners are withholding or withdrawing their involvement and endorsement.

In Ahmed’s view, “Alliance building must factor in national interest and not simply the projection of self and self-serving priorities.”

He stressed: “The building blocs are records of honesty, mutual agreement, sincere partnering, not use and dump, sacrifice, fidelity to ideas, trust, mutual confidence and capacity for risk taking.

“Some of these components I can’t see in the futile exercise being mooted by driver of the proposed alliance. It looks like an alliance for the benefit of one single individual.”

  • Maradona IBB cannot dribble Nigeria again over June 12 annulment, says Onjeh

Maradona IBB cannot dribble Nigeria again over June 12 annulment, says Onjeh

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Benue South senatorial election, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) and his accomplices for their role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential poll.

In a strongly worded statement, Onjeh condemned IBB’s recently launched autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” describing it as a deliberate attempt to rewrite history and evade responsibility for one of Nigeria’s greatest democratic betrayals.

He criticised Babangida’s half-hearted apology, stating that the former military ruler conveniently shifted blame onto deceased figures who are no longer alive to challenge his version of events.

“IBB had a chance to show remorse and make amends for the damage he inflicted on Nigeria’s democracy, but instead, he chose to insult our collective intelligence. He dribbled around the truth, just like his nickname ‘Maradona’ suggests. Nigerians will not be deceived again,” Onjeh declared.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, compared Babangida’s autobiography to the James Hadley Chase novel, “The dead stay dumb,” arguing that the book attempts to control the narrative through selective storytelling.

Onjeh noted that IBB’s account conveniently absolves himself while placing the blame on deceased figures such as Chief MKO Abiola, General Sani Abacha, Prince Arthur Nzeribe, Justice Bassey Ikpeme, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, and others.

He further expressed outrage that high-profile Nigerians attended the book launch and donated large sums of money to a so-called “IBB Presidential Library,” while our public libraries, schools and other public institutions are left in dilapidation.

“What exactly is IBB preserving? A legacy of deception, betrayal, and stolen mandates? It is a slap in the face of democracy-loving Nigerians that such a man still enjoys reverence,” Onjeh fumed.

The former President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) insisted that the annulment of the June 12 election was not merely an abuse of power but an outright treasonable offense.

He maintained that IBB and his co-conspirators must face justice for subverting the will of millions of Nigerians who voted for MKO Abiola in what remains Nigeria’s freest and fairest election.

“No statute of limitations should shield IBB and his cronies from facing justice, as time doesn’t run against crime. If we are serious about democracy, then actions must have consequences.

“The global community must also act by sanctioning IBB and freezing any ill-gotten assets stashed abroad. A coup against democracy must never go unpunished,” Onjeh stated.

The former President of the West Africa Students’ Union (WASU) described June 12 as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

He recalled how millions of Nigerians transcended ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic divides to cast their votes for a leader they believed in.

“The June 12 election was a unifying moment in Nigeria’s history. It proved that Nigerians could set aside their differences and unite for a common cause—only for IBB to crush that hope overnight,” Onjeh lamented.

He further noted that many student leaders, pro-democracy activists, and journalists lost their lives in the struggle to reinstate MKO Abiola’s mandate, while countless others were imprisoned, tortured, or forced into exile.

“As one who voted in that election, and also has a record of activists martyred in the frontline of the pro-democracy struggle during that era, I can never forget the sacrifices of our comrades. The blood of our fallen heroes will continue to cry out for justice,” Onjeh vowed.

Onjeh, who was also the APC 2023 Senatorial Candidate for Benue South, outlined the following demanded immediate arrest and prosecution of IBB and his accomplices for treason, arguing The annulment of the June 12 election was an act of subversion against the Nigerian people, and those responsible must be held accountable.

He also called for full compensation for the victims of the June 12 struggle, including families of those who lost their lives, as well as those who suffered unlawful imprisonment and other damages, must be identified and duly compensated.

He further demanded official recognition of MKO Abiola as a former President of Nigeria, arguing while President Muhammadu Buhari took a commendable step by awarding MKO Abiola the GCFR title and declaring June 12 as Democracy Day, more must be done, Abiola must be recognised in all official records as a former President and Commander-in-Chief, and his family must receive all benefits due to former heads of state.

The former Chairman, Governing Board of PRODA also challenged IBB to come clean on the controversial $12.4 billion Gulf Oil Windfall.

He accused Babangida’s administration of gross mismanagement of the huge revenue Nigeria earned during the 1990-1991 Gulf War, noting that a probe by the Pius Okigbo Panel indicted the regime for financial recklessness.

“For decades, Nigerians have demanded answers, but all we get is silence. Where did the money go, and who benefited? Since IBB is suddenly in a confessing mood, he should answer these burning questions,” Onjeh charged.

Onjeh maintained that no amount of historical revisionism can absolve IBB of his crimes against democracy. While Babangida may attempt to portray himself as a misunderstood leader, the reality remains that his annulment of June 12 set Nigeria’s democracy back by decades.

“History will judge IBB, but so should the law. Nigeria must not be a country where impunity thrives. If we are truly a democratic nation, we must act now. Babangida and his accomplices must face the full weight of the law. Anything less would be a betrayal of the ideals that June 12 represents,” Onjeh stated.
