Alia’s removal of Benue Chief Judge lawful, democratic, Onjeh insists.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Daniel Onjeh has defended the decision of Governor Hyacinth Alia to remove Justice Maurice Ikpambese as the Chief Judge of Benue State, asserting the action was constitutionally valid and in line with due process.

In a statement on Friday, Onjeh criticised the National Judicial Council (NJC) and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for opposition to the Governor’s decision, emphasising that the removal was executed within the constitutional framework provided in Section 292 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended).

Citing Section 292(1) of the Constitution, Onjeh explained that a Chief Judge of a State can be removed by the Governor, provided the action is supported by a two-thirds majority of the House of Assembly on grounds such as misconduct, incapacity, or a violation of the Code of Conduct.

“Nowhere in the Constitution does it state that the NJC’s recommendation is a prerequisite for such removal,” Onjeh stated. “While the NJC plays a role in disciplining judicial officers, it does not have absolute authority in this matter.”

He further clarified that Section 292(1) (b), which requires NJC involvement, is an entirely different approach outside the scope of Section 292(1)(a). “This means the removal of a Chief Judge can follow a process initiated by the legislative arm, without NJC’s recommendation,” Onjeh added.

Onjeh accused the NJC and NBA of being silent when the judiciary in Benue State was being used as a tool for political destabilisation.

“When the judiciary was dabbling into politics in Benue, working to undermine Governor Alia’s administration, where were the NJC and NBA?” Onjeh queried.

“If they are truly committed to the rule of law, they ought to have taken judicial notice of what is going on in Benue State. The BENUE people see through these plots, and they stand with Governor Alia and the State House of Assembly. They will not allow their hard-earned democracy to be sabotaged.”

According to Onjeh, the framers of the 1999 Constitution ensured that no single entity—whether the executive, legislative, or judicial arm of government—wields unchecked power over governance.

“The Constitution provides different pathways for the removal of judicial officers to protect the system from abuse. The two-thirds majority requirement in the State House of Assembly ensures that such decisions are carefully scrutinized and not made arbitrarily,” Onjeh remarked.

Addressing critics who claim that the executive’s involvement in removing a Chief Judge threatens judicial independence, Onjeh countered that judicial independence is not the same as judicial impunity.

“No institution is above the law, and the NJC’s role does not override the constitutional powers of the Governor and the legislature to act when necessary,” he argued.

Onjeh emphasised that Governor Alia’s decision was not a unilateral one but a collective resolution taken in the best interest of Benue State.

“The people of Benue support this action because they trust Governor Alia’s leadership and his commitment to upholding the rule of law. Father Alia is a gift to Benue State, and the people will stand by him and defend his administration against any forces working to derail it.”

He further called on well-meaning Nigerians to resist attempts to misinterpret constitutional provisions to serve political agendas.

The 2023 Benue south APC senatorial candidate warned that institutions like the NJC and NBA must be consistent in their application of the law, rather than being selectively outraged when it suits certain political interests.

According to him: “Where were these voices when the judiciary was being weaponized against the people’s choice in Benue? The NJC and NBA cannot apply constitutional principles selectively. If they truly stand for justice, they should have spoken up earlier when the integrity of the judiciary was under attack in Benue

“Benue people have spoken. They stand with their Governor. They stand with their House of Assembly. And they will not allow their democracy to be hijacked.”

Wanted: probe of USAID terror funding claims by U.S Congressman

A startling revelation has emerged from the United States Congress, casting a shadow over International aid operations. A Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, Scott Perry has alleged that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has inadvertently funneled millions of dollars into terrorist organisations, including Boko Haram, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS. IBRAHIM ADAM reports how Perry’s claims have reignited debates over the transparency and oversight of American foreign aid spending.

    Congressman Perry’s allegations

During the inaugural hearing of the Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency on Thursday, February 13, Perry delivered a damning critique of USAID’s financial allocations. His presentation, titled “The War on Waste: Stamping Out the Scourge of Improper Payments and Fraud,” questioned how American taxpayer money was being utilised in conflict zones.

In a now-viral video, Perry asserted that: “Who gets some of that money? Does that name ring a bell to anybody in the room? Because your money, your money, $697 million annually, plus the shipments of cash funds in Madrasas, ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, ISIS Khorasan, and terrorist training camps. That’s what it’s funding,”

Beyond terrorist financing, Perry also cited a $136 million fund meant for the construction of 120 schools in Pakistan, stating that there was no evidence of the schools’ existence.

Furthermore, he alleged that financial support for initiatives like Operation Enduring Sentinel’s Women’s Scholarship Endowment and Young Women Lead, which receive $60 million and $5 million annually, respectively, had failed to reach the intended beneficiaries in Afghanistan.

Citing an Inspector General’s report, Perry argued that due to Taliban restrictions on women’s education and public life, these funds were likely misappropriated.

“Somebody else got the money. You are paying for terrorism. This has got to end,” Perry declared emphatically.

    Nigerian authorities raise concerns

Perry’s claims align with longstanding concerns raised by Nigerian security officials. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa has previously voiced apprehensions about the financial networks sustaining Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

In an interview with Al Jazeera, General Musa emphasised the need for an international probe into how these terror groups receive funding.

“We have talked to international communities; let’s find out the funding. When they started surrendering, as we speak, we have over 120,000 that have surrendered. Most of them, when you find them, they are coming with hard currency. How did they get them? How are they funded? How did they get the training? How did they get the equipment?” Musa questioned.

The CDS further suggested that an international conspiracy might be at play, sustaining Boko Haram’s insurgency for over 15 years.

“How are they able to sustain themselves for fifteen years? That is one question I think everybody should ask. The UN needs to come in because we need to trace the funding, track it. It is international flow, and we (Nigeria) don’t have control over that.”

Ex-JTF commander backs foreign involvement claims

A retired Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander, Dr. Isma’il Tanko Wudilawa, has echoed concerns about foreign involvement in Nigeria’s security crisis, particularly in the tactics and operations of Boko Haram terrorists.

Speaking in Kano, Dr. Wudilawa pointed out that insurgents often possess advanced military training and sophisticated weaponry that could only be acquired through external partnerships.

“The weapons used by terrorists in the forests are not purchased by the Nigerian government. They have sophisticated arms that even our security forces do not possess,” he said.

Dr. Wudilawa claimed that captured insurgents have been found with foreign currencies, and there have been repeated sightings of helicopters allegedly supplying weapons and other resources to terrorist groups.

“We have seen foreign currencies among captured terrorists. Also, intelligence has pointed to helicopters dropping weapons in remote areas. These are things that require further investigation.”

    USAID’s controversial track record

Established in 1961, USAID operates in over 120 countries, funding health, education, economic development, and emergency response initiatives.

However, the agency has increasingly come under scrutiny, particularly from conservative lawmakers, who argue that its funds are mismanaged or exploited by entities hostile to the United States.

Since Donald Trump’s presidency began in 2017, USAID has been at the center of political debate. The Trump administration has sought to dismantle the agency, arguing that taxpayer funds should be redirected toward domestic needs rather than foreign aid.

As part of these efforts, USAID personnel in both domestic and International offices were placed on administrative leave, with a statement on the agency’s website confirming that the leave took effect on February 7, 2024.

The future of USAID remains uncertain, with reports suggesting that Trump may issue an executive order transferring its operations to the State Department.

Further complicating the situation is the dismissal of USAID’s Inspector General, Paul Martin, after he published a report criticizing the Trump administration’s attempts to scale back the agency’s personnel and funding.

Probe weighty claim: Ndume tells Fed Govt

Senator representing Borno South Senatorial District, Ali Ndume has called on the Federal Government to investigate Perry’s allegations thoroughly.

“You can’t say it’s just an allegation; it’s more than that,” Ndume, a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

“That’s why the Nigerian government and the National Assembly, especially, need to look into it to investigate and verify the veracity of such a very weighty allegation,”

Ndume emphasised that the Nigerian government should be particularly concerned about these claims, given past suspicions that foreign humanitarian agencies operating in Nigeria’s insurgent-ridden North-East zone were involved in sponsoring terrorist activities.

“This development is very worrisome, especially because one of the terrorist organisations mentioned by Scott Perry is Boko Haram, and Boko Haram has ravaged not only the North-East but even (other parts of) Nigeria,” he said.

Recalling past events, Ndume referenced instances where Nigerian security agencies had raised concerns about the operations of International NGOs.

“I remember during the period of (Lieutenant General Tukur) Buratai, the Nigerian Army got intelligence and even raided the office of USAID or United Nations in Maiduguri. There was also a time when the governor got intelligence, and security agencies raided one NGO that was providing training to some of their staff on how to use guns,” he stated.

The Senator lamented the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the North-East, noting that millions have been displaced and over 50,000 killed in about two decades since Boko Haram’s insurgency began.

“We have been wondering for all these years where these people are getting money,” Ndume added.

He also suggested that Nigeria should aim to become an aid-giving nation rather than one reliant on foreign assistance.

“This issue of relying on aid from other countries is not even good for us because Nigeria, by now, is supposed to be the one that is giving out aid and not receiving aid. This is like a wake-up for all of us in government. We have everything; the only problem is the leadership. We need to fix that so that we’ll tap into what we have and be content.”

Role of Elon Musk in USAID reforms

Adding an unusual twist to the ongoing USAID controversy is the involvement of billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk.

As a Special Government Employee and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk has been instrumental in reshaping federal expenditure priorities, including USAID’s budget allocations.

His role in advocating for stringent financial oversight has contributed to the agency’s uncertain future.

    What Happens Next?

The allegations against USAID have prompted calls for an independent investigation into its funding mechanisms, particularly in conflict-prone regions. Lawmakers and security analysts are urging the U.S. government and international bodies to conduct a thorough audit to determine whether American foreign aid has, intentionally or otherwise, benefited terrorist organizations.

As Nigerian authorities continue their battle against Boko Haram and ISWAP, the need for financial transparency remains paramount. If Perry’s claims hold true, it could necessitate a major overhaul of international aid operations to prevent funds from falling into the wrong hands.

Elated by the gesture of the coalition in purchasing the nomination forms, Okonwko appreciated the group and promised not to disappoint them, the party and the people of the state, if he wins the November election.

“You have just presented to me a great gift of N50 million. As you can see, I am full of smiles. I would have said, I wasn’t expecting this but knowing that I am not in this race alone, there are a lot of people who have mind up their minds that whatever is happening in Anambra State isn’t the way to go, particularly with the issue of insecurity.

“I am encouraged. If there is any doubt, I now know these people are going to match their words with action. They are beside me. With what you have done today, you are those who are beside me. I thank you very much for what you have done. Where this fund came, may God replenish you.

“For those who haven’t joined this coalition, this is a wake up call. We will do justice to rescue Anambra from a man who knows all, who takes no advice.”

Okonkwo said he was impressed by their gesture which he noted was an affirmation of their confidence in his capacity to govern the state.

“We are aware of the huge amount being thrown around to ensure that I don’t get the ticket. He (Soludo) knows he can’t square up with me on election day. I have picked the form, I am prepared for the battle.

“To all traditional institutions, religious leaders, the time is now. We may not have the control of having the ticket but we know that with the ticket in our hands, we will secure landslide victory for APC.

“I am from Anambra Central, the votes are domiciled in Ndemili North I am leader of Ndemili North and South. So, the votes are guaranteed.”

Expressing confidence of victory, the governorship hopeful recalled that in the last general elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu scored the highest votes from his constituency .

“I am from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria and I led the campaign that produced Dr Chris Ngige as Senator. I led the same campaign that produced 6 house of assembly members in Anambra. I am back to produce the first APC Governor in Anambra.

“Going to this election, we already have 7 local councils. We will partner with Anambra South and North to deliver Anambra for APC.”

Leader of the Anambra Coalition for Progressive Change, Chief Ndubuisi Ezeani, said they mobilised fund to buy the form because they believe in Okonkwo capacity to change the governance narrative in the state.

“We took the decision to buy the form. Anambra is always first. We need an individual that has the track record, the pedigree to develop our state. We have settled for Chief Okonkwo.

“We know that he is a very comfortable person. We know he can buy the form but we are persuading him, to encourage him. We bought the form to show our seriousness. This is just a step, many other activities will follow before the primary and we are sure that he will win,” he said.

Eno’s new cabinet full of ‘expired politicians’ says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State has expressed concerns over Governor Umo Eno’s newly constituted State Executive Council members, describing it as “a second chance for failure.”

The party, in a statement  by the APC Media Network, chaired by Otuekong Iniobong John, said the new exco members as nominated by the Governor, was “a war council and a recipe for disaster.”

According to the APC, the council is comprised of those it claimed have failed in their previous roles, alleging their appointments were based on “political compensation for friends and cronies” rather than merit.

The party stated that “former National Assembly members, former Council Chairmen, former House of Assembly members, and former Commissioners, who performed woefully in the past, have now been refurbished and given another opportunity to fail.”

The APC specifically highlighted the appointments of Aniekan Umanah and Anthony Luke, wondering  how these appointments align with the Governor’s  “Peace Sustenance” agenda.

The party said: “Except for a few appointees from academia and one from the health sector, the list would have been entirely populated by yesterday’s men and women who have failed to justify the confidence placed in them in bygone years.

“One would have thought that after serving out their tenures in previous offices, they would quietly return home to avoid further infuriating the populace. Instead, they have returned with aplomb to fail us once again.

“Furthermore, as Gov Umo Eno promotes his much-hyped “Peace Sustenance” agenda, we must point out that the appointments of Hon. Aniekan Umanah and Hon. Anthony Luke (Aluko) to the State Executive Council deviate from this policy.

“Such appointments, in our view, do not align with the principles of inclusivity, integrity, and effective governance.”

Furthermore, the APC condemned the alleged marginalisation of Oro Federal Constituency, which has only two commissioners representing five Local Government Areas while Eket LGA on its own, had two nominees.

  • Mazi Gburugburu and changing political landscape in Imo

Mazi Gburugburu and changing political landscape in Imo

    By Njoku Macdonald Obinna

Politicians have always found reasons, some may say, flimsy excuses, for defections or resignations, as most of them ascribe their cross-carpeting to the deep divisions and factionalisation within the party. Such fragmentation where it truly exists usually makes it increasingly difficult to foster unity and advance the collective interests of party members and the people.

However, in the case of the trio of Hon. Blyden Amajirionwu,  a party  chieftain of the ruling  All Progressive Congress in Ngor Okpala LGA and its representative during the 9th Imo State House of Assembly, Mr.  Cajetan Duke, State Publicity Secretary of the APC; and Dr. Uchechukwu Nelson Nwosu, State Legal Adviser of the party, what are  the cogent reasons for resigning their positions in a state where the ruling party is not divided, and is  still very much intact under the leadership of Sen. Hope Uzodimma?

While they have rights to political associations and affiliations, ironically, reading through the press release made by Okenze, Amajirionwu, alongside the other two  officials of the ruling party, none of them cited political crisis or division within the party.  This lends credence to the fact that their decision is simply about their personal interests, political survival, and realignment as ideology seems to be very far from Nigerian politicians.

While  the Imo State off-season governorship election still tarries, what gave the trio such impetus to resign their membership of a ruling political party  where they have  established contacts, political associates and impressive reach to lobby for better political appointments or pursue  government contracts if they had exercised some patience,  gives one insight into what is to come as The Mazi Gburugburu’s factor  keeps resonating across the various wards and  local government areas in Imo State.

Lately, the new conversation in Imo State has centered around Dr. Chima Amadi’s political trajectory and such other firebrands, well established entrepreneurs and technocrats with verifiable sources of income  from the private sector  who seem to be a total departure from the old political order as ndi Imo are craving for a paradigm shift in governance, one with a defined direction order than the usual ‘ Lagos Big Boys.’

The resignation of  Okenze Blyden Amajirionwu and Cajetan Duke from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) into The Mazi Gburugburu’s political family, a little known organisation before now, is a true testament to the powerful influence, leadership dexterity, political sagacity, rich contacts and strong grassroots appeal that Dr. Chima Amadi, a new entrant into the Imo political landscape commands, as more government appointees and members of the ruling party in Imo- APC, 4th Estate Reporters gathered, shall soon resign their positions and leave the party, in actualization of their political ambition as the ongoing political merger arrangement is on top gear.

Reading one alleged politically sponsored story by a certain  Anselem Iwejuru with the title: `Protest erupts in Ngor- Okpala as youths, elders reject Chima Amadi’s governorship ambition`,  a story coming barley 15 hours after the resignation of three  APC chieftains  who  threw caution to the wind and joined The Mazi  Gburugburu’s political family, is a reflection of political jittery and  masturbation in some quarters as Amadi’s fast growing popularity and influence in Imo State can no longer be ignored in  a critical analysis and objective assessment of the  real contenders and  rest of the pretenders jostling for Douglas House,  ahead 2027.

Hailed  from Umuekwunne community in Ngor- Okpala LGA, Owerri zone, of Imo State, Dr. Amadi, is  rich, highly connected, an avid researcher, well-travelled scholar of international repute, London trained economist, political scientist, public policy expert, serial entrepreneur, and billionaire business maverick, has continued to dot the Imo political space in recent times with his state-wide political activities and consultations, warming his way into the hearts of the people at the grassroots.

While he is relatively not known in the Imo political leadership discourse, his name rings a deafening bell among power brokers and political gladiators in Nigeria.

Mazi Gburugburu, as he is popularly known by his numerous followers, supporters, and admirers, has a mastery of Nigeria’s politics as well as the dynamics, as he comes with a rather refreshing political ideology of social welfare for the people, empowering their minds to demand for good governance, and productively engaging the masses.

The Doctoral Fellow at the University of Warwick, United Kingdom, Amadi, no doubt, will pull a very big surprise to many as the weeks and months draw closer. He is among the political gladiators to watch out for in 2027 as  the Imo political realignment movement has already started with the resignation of three members of the ruling party aforementioned.

Group urges ECOWAS, Alliance of Sahel States not to cut ties

Following the expiration of the one-year mandatory notice by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to exit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) has called on the two sides to reconsider their positions in the wider interest of ECOWAS citizens and the security of the sub-region.

The coalition of CSOs from across the subregion, the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS), said cutting ties will hurt the overall interests of the subregion’s citizens. WADEMOS, therefore, urged the Sahel states to reconsider and rescind the exit decision in the interest of ECOWAS citizens and to explore the six-month window provided by the ECOWAS authorities.

A statement by its Communications and Digital Platforms Officer, Jonah Eledi noted with concern the decision of the three countries to create an alternate regional group known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

The tripartite body’s move to sever ties with the ECOWAS stemmed from some concerns it expressed, concerning sanctions imposed by the sub-regional body in response to the coups in the three countries, a lack of support for combating terrorism in the region and the accusations that foreign powers influence the decisions of member states.

Eledi acknowledged that while the Sahel states have the right to pursue their national sovereignty and fight against neo-colonial exploitation, “cutting ties with a robust regional alliance risks undermining the significant benefits the people enjoy”.

Read Also: Nigeria ready to host Gulf of Guinea maritime police

He said the Sahel states should consider the implication of their exit in terms of economic and trade-related activities with the countries in the sub-region, “particularly because multilateralism offers mutual benefits for resolving cross-border challenges and promoting regional peace and security”.

The coalition hailed the ECOWAS authorities’ appointment of Senegal’s President Bassirou Faye as a special envoy to restore peace and stability in the sub-region. It urged the regional body to emphasize supporting member countries through the revised frameworks to improve democratic governance, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote cross-border opportunities for addressing the youth bulge and related social threats and challenges.

It enjoined the ECOWAS authorities to restore trust and confidence in the sub-regional body by undertaking a comprehensive review of its treaty and organs, and the complementary frameworks to align with the current and emerging context.

The statement reads in part: “The ECOWAS of Citizens, through the introduction of the Economic and Social Council Commission (ECOSOC), must be integral to the future of ECOWAS. We, therefore, commend efforts towards the formation of ECOSOC and call on ECOWAS to accelerate the process, being the only organ yet to be constituted.

“The future and sustainability of ECOWAS will largely depend on how it connects vertically with community citizens. It is undeniable that the regional bloc requires fundamental reforms, especially in the areas of conflict prevention, management, resolution, peacekeeping, and security, in addition to democracy and good governance. As a civil society intervention, WADEMOS Network will continue to mobilize, engage, and support ECOWAS towards building a strong, democratic, and safe region.”

  • ‘How Alia is tackling insecurity in Benue’

‘How Alia is tackling insecurity in Benue’

    By Asiwaju Abayomi Oluwashina

Section 14 (2b) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended) covers the security of lives and properties. This section states that the welfare and security of the citizens shall be the primary purpose of the government. Thus the government at all levels owes the people a constitutional duty to protect their lives and properties, irrespective of their ethnic, religious, and political affiliations.

Where the above provision and other provisions enshrined in international and regional instruments are missing, there will be restlessness, violence, endless killings and displacement of citizens under whatever guise in Nigeria.  While peace will be elusive in the land, democracy or meaningful development cannot thrive.

A state in the North Central geopolitical zone, Benue, had insecurity challenges ranging from terrorism to banditry, to herdsmen amongst others, and claimed many lives and displaced many others internally.

Hence, the incumbent Governor, Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Hyacinth Alia had his vision clear when he left his priesthood to take on governance. Indeed, when it comes to insecurity in the country, no governor has had it so rough than Alia. His situation is also more ironic given that his greatest critics are his predecessors in office.

But in recent times events are proving his accusers wrong as the paradigm is rapidly changing. It can be said that the state has never been safer in the last 25 years than now.

It is recorded that under the immediate past Governor of the state, Samuel Ortom, the spate of insecurity rattled the state.  Several properties were destroyed, while many lives were either maimed or killed.

Ortom had acknowledged several times as governor the upsurge of insecurity in the state. He accused the presidency of abating the menace.

When Ortom was recently quoted as saying that insecurity is rising in the state, stakeholders in Benue politics were left dumbfounded.

Ortom through his spokesperson, Terver Akase said: “There have been countless mass burials during Alia’s administration in many parts of the state due to attacks by herdsmen in Zone A, Zone B, and Zone C, particularly in Ukum, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Kwande, Gwer East, Gwer West, Guma, Makurdi, Agatu, Otukpo, among others. This government only attempts to conceal the truth about the killings and mass burials.”

The past governor rather praised himself. “His unwavering stance eventually paid off, as many Nigerians began to appreciate his advocacy against open grazing and the introduction of ranching. To the chagrin of expansionists, his administration enacted a law banning open grazing in Benue State.”

However, the people of the ‘Food Basket of the Nation’ and other Nigerians know between Ortom and the incumbent governor who was more effective in tackling insecurity.  It is an incontestable fact that the incumbent has done much more and delivered a serene environment where social and economic activities have returned.

Governor Alia has always emphasised that security is not fixed through words but action; hence he doesn’t blow the trumpet of his numerous strategies and results. He takes his achievements as dividends of democracy and part of the social contract he entered with the Benue people on May 29, 2023.

Like his principal, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, who believes in verifiable delivery rather than media jamboree, reluctantly provided the tip of the iceberg of what his principal had been doing in the area of security.

His words: “Ordinarily, we would have excused and ignored Ortom with his resurrected vicious propaganda against the Governor, especially that ‘’you cannot give what you don’t have,” but there is a compelling need to respond and put the records straight for the unsuspecting public.

“For a start, Governor Alia has never said there is absolute peace in Benue state. He has been consistent that relative peace has returned in the State under his watch. Mr. Ortom and his co-travellers must understand the distinction between “relative peace” and “absolute peace”.

While absolute peace may be unattainable, especially as it entails the state or country being completely free of security challenges, the relative peace currently experienced in Benue is significant.

“It is a testament to the fact that the state has witnessed a marked reduction in violence compared to previous years. Observable facts support the assertion that the spate of killings and attacks on local communities has drastically decreased.

Under Governor Alia, daily mass killings have significantly diminished, allowing residents to feel safer in their communities.

“People, who hitherto could not access their ancestral homes, now go there to farm. Some have even returned and settled back home. Markets that were once closed because of insecurity are now thriving again.

“In Guma Local Government, where Samuel Ortom hails from, local markets like Kaseyo, Ortese, Gbajimba, and Daudu among others have reopened, showcasing a resurgence in commerce and a return to normalcy. This economic revival is a testament to improved security and governmental effectiveness.

“Gov. Alia has effectively reduced the number of IDPs in the state. And while his predecessor claimed there were four million IDPs, recent profiling shows fewer than one million remain in camps. This exodus from IDP camps shows that many families have returned to their ancestral homes, further signifying a return to stability.

“The resurgence of agricultural activities in Mbagwen and Isherev districts in Makurdi and surrounding areas underscores the positive impact of the current administration’s efforts to restore peace and confidence.

“Recently, the Rev. Fr. commissioned another large market christened IDP Farm in Tyo Mu. This new farm, if properly harnessed can increase food supply not just for the state, North Central, but the whole nation.”

“While there are still security challenges in parts of the state, Governor Alia is actively working to address these issues. His approach is constructive and focused on problem-solving rather than engaging in political grandstanding or fear-mongering. Unlike Samuel Ortom, Governor Alia does not have to invite the press and cry before the cameras to show that he is fighting insecurity.

“Governor Alia is a breath of fresh air. The Governor is taking a quiet but effective approach to tackling insecurity in Benue State. He’s working diligently to eliminate the rate of insecurity in the state, and for that, he deserves commendation rather than vituperation.

“It does not surprise us that the diatribe is coming from the people who instigated all the security challenges, which Gov. Alia is doing everything possible to flush out. Those who either live in or follow happenings in Benue will agree with me that this Governor is committed to finding solutions rather than just talking about the problems.

“Governor Alia’s actions so far only demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving security and fostering a peaceful environment in Benue State. He deserves support rather than unfounded accusations or politicization of the situation. And the last person to criticize the Governor in this regard should be Mr. Samuel Ortom.”

While Ortom through his spokesperson and cohorts speaks from the figment of their imagination, malice and mischief to score cheap political goals, Alia’s modest efforts in tackling insecurity are real, concrete and verifiable with uncontroverted testimonials.

Thus, between Alia and Ortom, as far as security is concerned, the truth remains as constant as the northern star!

Ekiti central APC stakeholders endorse Oyebanji for second term

In a significant development ahead of the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti, stakeholders of the All  Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti Central Senatorial District have unanimously endorsed Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term in office.

The endorsement was passed, at a special senatorial meeting, organised by the APC leaders and stakeholders  from the District, held at the Fajuyi Pavilion, Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State Capital.

The endorsement motion, ratified through a thunderous voice vote, was moved and seconded by frontline leaders from the five local government area of the district.

The leaders  include Senator Babafemi Ojudu, a two-time commissioner, Mrs Ronke Okunsanya, serving House of Representatives’ members, Hon. Biodun Omoleye and Sola Fatoba, a former Acting Governor in the state Rt Hon Tope Ademiluyi, former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Wumi Ogunlola, and other party elders.

Justifying the reasons for the move in a resolution presented to the APC Acting State Chairman, Sola Elesin and via a letter transmitted to the Governor, by former Deputy Governor and Chairman, Ekiti Central APC Stakeholders, Prof Modupe Adelabu, the party restated that Oyebanji has been endorsed as the sole candidate for the next election slated for 2026.

Adelabu said that the endorsement was informed by Governor Oyebanji’s giant strides in office and they believe that he deserve second term.

The former governor noted that Oyebanji had delivered numerous people-oriented projects for the betterment of Ekiti state and its residents, making him worthy of governing the state for another term.

She said, “The reason we are here is to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our dear governor, Biodun Oyebanji, and his administration.

“We are also here to appreciate all the good works that our governor has done. We are different in this district, and when the time comes, we will show our support.

“We implore Oyebanji to continue his good works and not to relent”,she added.

The Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the action taken by party members signposted that they value continuity of good governance for Ekiti’s development to spiral.

The Senate Leader saluted all the past governors  of the State: Otunba Niyi Adebayo, Engr Segun Oni, Chief Ayodele Fayose and Dr Kayode Fayemi for their contributions to the development of the  state, stressing that the solid foundation they laid has helped the current governor to consolidate and fasttrack development of the state.

“Today, we are unveiling in the open what we have been saying to ourselves under the closed doors that Ekiti has never had it so good. We are very lucky having Governor Biodun Oyebanji as our governor. What we are doing today is not a campaign, time for campaign is coming. All we are doing is to hold our regular APC senatorial meeting, this is symbolic and strategic to us.

“The frontline and greatest achievement of Governor Oyebanji  is being able to unite everybody under one platform and umbrella. You may not understand what I meant by  Governor Oyebanji’s unity magic.

“But if you follow the trajectory of our politics in Ekiti State, particularly what happened in 2003 between Otunba Niyi Adebayo and Ayodele Fayose, and what we witnessed between Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi in 2007, then you will understand Oyebanji’s unity magic. All these leaders are now working together and all the achievements that Ekiti made under these past leaders are being consolidated under Governor Oyebanji.

“Beyond uniting Ekiti and bringing down governance from the Olympian height of the past to the grassroots, you will understand that he has given government, governance and our party back to ordinary people. Oyebanji is working and Ekiti is progressing. We have never had it so good.

“I thank the governor for uniting all of us and for taking Ekiti to the next level. We need continuity in Ekiti. If you go to Lagos before 1999 and you go there today, continuity has brought a new lease of life to that state, so the governor should continue with his good work till 2030”.

Bamidele appreciated the governor for his midas touches and enigmatic strides in the areas of infrastructures, agriculture, youth empowerment and other pivotal actions  taken to radicalise the economy, saying these have reverberated beyond the shores of the state.

In his response, Governor Oyebanji, appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC members for supporting him solidly to be able to take Ekiti to a mileage, in terms of development strides and for providing the platform to serve the people.

Oyebanji, who is also from the district, promised to continue to serve dedicatedly and with every fibre in his body to mitigate the poverty index and address the infrastructure deficit in the state, while appealing to party members to embark on aggressive mobilisation and be fair to all members.

“I am moved, very touched by this endorsement and I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart. When you gave me the ticket, I told you that I will always hear your voices. In the last two years , I have served you with humility and commitment.

“Myself and the Deputy Governor accept this with all humility. But this doesn’t preclude anyone who has governorship ambition on the platform of APC from showing interest. APC is a party that respects the right of every member to contest for any position of his choice. We are not afraid of competition.

“This is history being made today in Ekiti. When INEC lifts ban on political campaigns, you will know that you have a good and acceptable governor”.

Dignitaries present at the event include: The Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs) Monisade Afuye, the Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Wale Fapohunda (SAN),

Others include the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Taiwo Olatubosun; Commissioner for Women Affairs, Peju Babafemi; Ekiti APC Acting Chairman, Sola Eleshin; Chief of Staff to the Ekiti State Governor, Niyi Adebayo; Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Jide Awe, serving and former council chairmen and councillors, party leaders, politicians, among others.

…as northern region Yoruba Obas get new leadership

A member of the House of Representatives on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide, has called on Yoruba leaders in the northern region to fully support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term presidential aspirations, emphasizing the benefits of continuity in his administration’s growth and development policies.

Speaking at the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Association of Yoruba Traditional Leaders and Obas in the Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the weekend, where a new Executive Committee was inaugurated, Abejide, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, stressed the need for unity among Yorubas in the region.

While emphasizing the need for the Yoruba leaders to eschew divisive politics, the lawmaker, who is a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said, “I’ll support you, but only if we work together to support the President.

“Many of you are excelling in your fields and earning respect across communities. That influence must be channelled appropriately.”

He recounted how his constituents stood by him during his second-term bid in the House of Representatives and are now seeing the benefits, saying, “Tomorrow (Sunday), I am flagging off a 57.2-kilometer road project. This is not due to my strength but strong backing.

“If we work together, this association will experience real transformation.”

The lawmaker, who is also the Asiwaju of Yorubas in Kano, also emphasized the strategic importance of Yoruba unity, noting that, “Yorubas form a significant part of Nigeria’s population.

“If we are removed from the equation, the gap will be deeply felt. That’s why we must remain united.”

He announced a major project for the Yoruba community in Kano: “We are building a state-of-the-art palace. This is about more than just a structure; it is about ensuring the welfare of our people and strengthening our influence.

“When Yoruba people speak with one voice, we make a real impact. Our unity can determine election outcomes, and we have a lot to contribute to Nigeria’s progress.”

The newly appointed Chairman of the traditional rulers’ association, Muritala Adeleke, Serikinwa Yoruba of Funtua, Katsina State, pledged to enhance unity within the Yoruba community in the North and to implement socioeconomic programs that would benefit the people.

He encouraged Yoruba residents to maintain cordial relationships with their host communities, saying, “My vision is simple: unite all Yorubas in the North and ensure peaceful coexistence with our hosts. We are here to live, work, and build strong relationships based on mutual respect.

“Our people have always been peaceful. There is no history of conflicts between Yorubas and our host communities. We have built a solid foundation of trust and cooperation.”

On politics, Adeleke emphasized that while personal affiliations vary, the main hope is for President Tinubu’s administration to succeed, “If his first term brings progress and unity to Nigeria, then supporting his re-election will come naturally.

“We pray for his success and a stronger, more united country,” he added.

His Royal Majesty Oba Abdul Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi, the Aragbiji of Iragbiji Land, Osun State, serving as the Royal Father of the Day, advised northern Yoruba community leaders to adopt a democratic approach, defer to their traditional rulers in their places of origin, and safeguard the interests of Yoruba individuals in their respective domains.

Guest Speaker Prof. Ranti Ojo urged Yoruba traditional rulers to be good ambassadors of the Yoruba region, stressing, “You represent the Obas of Yoruba land outside the region, as they cannot be everywhere at all times. Your leadership must reflect the values and unity of our people.”

Oba Jimoh Alao Yusuf, Oba Yoruba of Gombe, and the Secretary General of the Association underscored the importance of law-abiding citizenship, particularly as the 2027 elections approach.

He said: “Wherever you are, respect the laws of the land and contribute to your community’s progress. Where you live is your home. We must embrace that mindset and strive to be responsible members of society.”

Hajia Idayat Bolanle, Iyalaje Yoruba, Kano, urged the new Executive Committee to promote inclusivity, especially for Yoruba women in the North, saying, “Women must be given space to be heard and to contribute to the community.

“Our fathers and leaders must support and encourage us in our initiatives. Inclusivity goes beyond politics; it extends to empowerment programs that need full cooperation for effective implementation”.
