The Lagos state chapter of the All Progressives Congress in the United Kingdom (APC UK) at the weekend held its End-of-Year Dinner in Bromley, London, bringing together party leaders, executives and members in a show of unity, reflection and renewed political commitment.

The well-attended event featured music and brought together party chieftains from all walks of life.

They threw their weight behind the administration’s of President Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu of Lagos State.

Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of Lagos State APC UK, Hon. Tayo Shodeinde appreciated party leaders and members for their steadfast loyalty and active participation in strengthening the APC in the diaspora.

According to a statement from the Secretariat of the party, Hon Shodehinde reiterated the chapter’s pride in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the remarkable developmental progress being recorded under Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which he described as “second to none.”

Also, the Chairman of APC UK and Chairman of the Diaspora Forum, Hon. Tunde Doherty, delivered a paper titled “The Impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the Diaspora.”

Doherty outlined how the administration’s policies are reshaping diaspora engagement, investment opportunities and national image abroad.

He noted that Nigerians in the diaspora have a critical role to play in supporting governance reforms and national development initiatives.

Similarly Hon Felix Ajayi who delivered the first keynote address on the topic “The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: What It Means and the Progress in Lagos State,” noted the policy direction of the Tinubu administration and its implications for governance, economic stability and national development.

He highlighted Lagos State as a model of continuity and performance, noting that the reforms and infrastructural growth in the state clearly reflect the broader vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Ajayi further commended Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration for sustaining developmental momentum in critical sectors such as transportation, housing, health and education.

He urged APC members in the diaspora to remain consistent advocates of the party’s achievements and to continue engaging constructively in national development from abroad.

A party chieftain, Dr Philip Edewor, spoke on politics in general, drawing from past experiences and highlighting the challenges facing political organisation and participation.

He emphasised the need for discipline, unity and strategic thinking within party structures, especially among diaspora chapters, to ensure long-term relevance and impact.

Hon Alhaja Gbemisola Ademola was officially sworn in as Women Leader, while Hon Alhaja Aolat Tomi Sule was sworn in as Vice Chairwoman, Central.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Hon Ladi Vera Cruz, drawing applause from party members who described the development as a boost to inclusiveness and organisational strength within the chapter.

  • 2027: APC set to bounce back in Kano as stakeholders endorse Tinubu for 2nd term, Barau for governorship

2027: APC set to bounce back in Kano as stakeholders endorse Tinubu for 2nd term, Barau for governorship

    • By Ismail Mudashir

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to stage a comeback in Kano State, following the formal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term and Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, for the governorship race in the state by key stakeholders across the state.

Kano, once a stronghold of the APC, shifted to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) during the last general election. In that cycle, the APC lost the governorship and all senatorial seats except the Kano North Senatorial District, which Senator Barau successfully retained.

Since the NNPP’s victory in 2023, the APC has remained in opposition in Kano, widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential voting blocs. Throughout this period, Senator Barau has served as the backbone of the party in the state. Recently, the former National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, hailed him as the “General of Nigerian Politics,” remarking that posterity would remember his contributions favourably.

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, APC stakeholders in Kano have begun reassessing their strategy to reclaim the state from what they describe as the NNPP’s misrule. Over the past four weeks, influential voices within the party have backed President Tinubu’s second-term bid and intensified calls for Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, to be adopted as the APC’s sole governorship candidate for 2027.

To these stakeholders, Senator Barau stands out as the only APC figure widely loved by the grassroots, respected by the elite, admired by youths and women, supported by clerics and academics, and embraced by the business community. To them, Senator Barau remains the true “People’s Senator”

Leading the pack of endorsements were former and serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly. A group of over 200 serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly, from 1999 to date, was led by a former speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulaziz G. Gafasa (2007-2011) to the National Assembly, where they endorsed the second-term bid of President Tinubu and Senator Barau for the 2027 governorship election.

In the words of the lawmakers, through former speaker Gafasa to Senator Barau, “ We are here to tell you that we are solidly behind you for three reasons. One, you have positively impacted the lives of our people across the three senatorial districts of Kano State. Secondly, you have been a lifeline to our party, APC. Thirdly, you have positively touched our lives, even though some of us are not from the same senatorial district as you. This has made you the most marketable candidate in APC.”

In the same vein, members of the forum of former Commissioners of Kano State, who served from 2019 to 2023 under Dr  Ganduje, have also followed suit.

The former commissioners, who are grassroots politicians across the state, took turns to extol and commend the various interventions of Senator Barau in Kano State and beyond.

In the words of Dr Ali Musa Burum-Burum, if not for the intervention of the Deputy President of the Senate, the APC would have been in a state of comatose in Kano State.

Similarly, women leaders of the APC from 31 local government areas of the Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts also paid a solidarity visit to the Deputy President of the Senate at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Led by the Deputy Women Leader of the party in Kano State, Hajiya Sabuwa Salisu Takai, they expressed appreciation for the various developmental strides of Senator Barau in Kano State.

A week later, the former local government chairmen in Kano State adopted Senator Barau as the sole candidate of the APC for the 2027 governorship race in the state.

The former LG chairmen, who served between 2019 and 2022 during Ganduje’s tenure as governor of the state, adopted Senator Barau during a courtesy call to the National Assembly in Abuja.

A motion for the adoption of Senator Barau was moved by the former chairman of Rimin Gado Local Government Area, Barrister Dahiru Mannir Maigari, and seconded by the former chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai.

When the former chairman of Madobi LGA, Alhaji Mohammed Yahaya, put the vote, all the former chairmen unanimously approved it through a voice vote.

Former chairman of Gwale LGA. Alhaji Khalid Ishak Diso informed the Deputy President of the Senate that the people of Kano, especially at the grassroots level, are eagerly awaiting his declaration for the race.

“Kano people are waiting for you to declare for the governorship race. We recently organised an event, where we asked you to declare. You are yet to. The people of Kano are anxiously awaiting your declaration. When are you declaring? Please answer the call to serve our people,” he said.

Also, the former Chairman of ALGON, Baffa Mohammed Takai, who led his colleagues on the courtesy call, stated that they had adopted Senator Barau in view of his outstanding performance in parliament, adding that his contributions to Kano’s development are immense.

The forum of former speakers-councillors of LGAs of Kano State, led by their Chairman, Hon. Shuaibu Haruna Gamarya, has also lent its support to the President and the Deputy President of the Senate.

The delegation, comprising 32 former House Leaders, came with a clear and united message, as well as a genuine love for the progress of Kano State. They declared total support for President  Tinubu’s second term and adopted Senator Barau as the APC’s gubernatorial candidate for 2027.

They served during the administration of Ganduje in Kano State. Speaking on behalf of the group, the Chairman, Hon. Shuaibu Haruna Gamarya, said, “You are a senator for all, given your contributions to Kano State and the entire Northern Nigeria. We are not here for anything; we are here out of true love and for the sake of Allah. We are with you one hundred per cent. You are our gubernatorial candidate and governor, come May 29, 2027, Insha Allah”

The forum of former speakers – councillors of LGAs of Kano State, led by their Chairman, Hon. Shuaibu Haruna Gamarya, has backed President Tinubu’s second-term bid and Senator Barau’s governorship ambition.

The forum’s Secretary, Hon. Usman Muazu Garin Malam, reaffirmed their grassroots commitment, “We, the house leaders, hereby support President Tinubu’s second-term bid and endorse Senator Barau as the sole APC gubernatorial candidate. We will mobilise the grassroots for them.”

Former Speaker of the Tofa LGA, Hon. Shehu Halilu, moved a motion for the formal adoption of Senator Barau, and former leader of Garko LGA, Hon. Sunusi Abdu, seconded it, adding, “Anybody that is against Senator Barau is an enemy of Kano and an enemy of APC. That person is also against President Tinubu.”

Another group that has endorsed the duo of President Tinubu and Senator Barau is the Forum of Former Secretaries of the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State. Members of the forum, led by its Chairman, Usaini Sani Fagge, and accompanied by Hon. Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, Senior Special Assistant to the President on the North West, were recently at the National Assembly.

The Tinubu/Barau Support Group Coalition, comprising people, especially youths, from across the 44 local government areas of Kano State and spanning various faiths, with members from the southern part of the country who are residents of Kano, has rallied behind the President and Senator Barau. Comrade Hafiz Liman led them to the National Assembly, where they formally declared their support for the duo.

The former chairmen of the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State, who served from 2003 to 2011 during the era of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, have joined the team.

Led by a former chairman of Tofa LGA, Hon. Garba Idris Unguwar Rimi, they unanimously endorsed President Tinubu and Senator Barau for a second term and governorship race, respectively.

A group of former federal lawmakers, comprising those who served in the second, third, and present fourth republics, have followed suit. Led by Hon. Umar Sadiq, who represented Kumbotso Federal Constituency between 1979 and 1983, they stated that the decision to endorse President Tinubu and Senator Barau for the presidency and governorship, respectively, was a unanimous resolution among all members of the forum.

In the same vein, hundreds of Kano’s former councillors, supervisors, and advisers, from 1999 to date, have thrown their support behind Tinubu’s second-term bid and endorsed Senator Barau for the Kano governorship race.

Under the Kano State APC Ex-Councillors, Supervisors, and Advisers Forum, from 1999 to date, the group, comprising both old and young, male and female politicians, announced that they had concluded arrangements to purchase the APC governorship form for Senator Barau.

The Chairman of the forum, Hon. Muazu Isah Dorogo, stated that at their recent meeting, all the members of the forum across the 44 LGAs of the state met and assessed all the contenders, hence resolved to support Senator Barau.

Meanwhile, local government stakeholders of the APC have also thrown their weight behind the President and the Deputy President of the Senate.

A delegation from the Kano North Senatorial District Caucus of the APC, led by the Chairman, Alhaji Inuwa Dan Shayi Rimin Gado, has also backed Senator Barau.

During the visit, the delegation reaffirmed its loyalty and unwavering support, further declaring Senator Barau as the sole gubernatorial candidate of the APC for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during one of the visits, Hon. Faruk Lawan, who represented Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency of Kano State for 16 years, said they would leave no stone unturned in ensuring the victory of President Tinubu’s second-term bid and Senator Barau’s governorship ambition in 2027, stating that the endorsement by all stakeholders was a sign of good omens.

Takai’s words: “The endorsement by all shows that everyone is in support of this rescue mission. We have been with him; we know what he is capable of. Senator Barau will tackle the developmental challenge and look into the welfare of our people. As we have all seen his good works in the parliament.

“Choosing Senator Barau as Governor is the best decision for Kano, and promoting his candidature is a duty for all lovers of our state. As such, we shall all come out and support him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

For his part, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt Hon Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, said, “ We are all on the path of victory. By Allah’s grace, Senator Barau I Jibrin will be the one to be sworn in on May 29, 2027, as Governor of Kano State. Amin “

We are on a mission to rescue Kano – Senator Barau

Throughout the visits of all the stakeholders, one thing that dominated Senator Barau’s speech was the need to restore the glorious days of Kano.

Senator Barau said, “ We have to work hard and make sacrifices to restore the glorious days of our state. It’s indeed true that Kano was second to Lagos before, in terms of development, commerce, and so on. Unfortunately, Kano is now trailing behind due to a lack of good leadership. Let us not live in denial. This is a fact that we must all work together to address in the interest of our people and state.

“Glory be to Allah SWT that our people have queued behind the movement to rescue Kano State from the present misrule. This is a rescue mission. I wish to assure you that by the grace of God, we will take bold steps to bring Kano back to its glorious days. We will succeed by the grace of God. We will always stand by the truth and for our people.”

  • Onoh defends EFCC probe of ex- AGF Malami

Onoh defends EFCC probe of ex- AGF Malami

The former southeast spokesman to President Bola Tinubu and Chairman of forum of former members of Enugu Assembly, Denge.Josef Onoh, had strongly defended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation of the former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister for Justice, Malam Abubakar Malami.

In a statement from his residence in Marne-la-Vallée Paris, Onoh said the current investigation by the EFCC was no witch-hunt or politically motivated.

Onoh, while recalling Abubakar Malami’s background prior to his appointment as AGF in 2015, said that his career was primarily that of a dedicated legal practitioner and politician from Kebbi State.

Born on April 17, 1967, in Birnin Kebbi, Malami received a solid education, blending Islamic and Western systems, culminating in an LL.B from Usmanu Danfodiyo University (1991), and was subsequently admitted into the Nigerian Bar (1992), and elevated to Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2008.

Onoh further said that Malami’s professional career centered on private legal practice, including roles at firms such as K.T. Turaki & Co., as a magistrate and state counsel in Kebbi, and as principal partner of A.A. Malami & Co. (2002–2015), a litigation-focused chambers handling civil, criminal, and commercial cases without any record of massive financial payoffs from successful litigations.

He recalled that Malami was also actively involved in opposition politics, serving as National Legal Adviser to the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), contributing to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, and contesting (unsuccessfully) the APC governorship ticket in Kebbi in 2014.

“I therefore challenge Malami to make public his asset declaration prior to 2015,” Onoh challenged.

Onoh said that there are no credible public records of Malami owning or operating substantial private businesses—such as hotels, universities, rice mills, or large-scale investments—before his appointment as AGF.

“His pre-2015 wealth and income appear tied exclusively to his successful legal practice and modest public service roles. He established philanthropic foundations like the Kadi Malami and Khadimiyya Foundations for community development, but these were charitable, not commercial ventures and this was the Abubakar Malami I know.

“However, after serving as AGF from 2015 to 2023, Malami has been linked to an extensive portfolio of high-value assets, including the multi-billion naira Azbir Hotel and Azbir Arena in Birnin Kebbi (recently taken over by police amid probes), Rayhaan (or Rayhan) University, Rayhaan Rice Mill, private academies and multiple properties in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi.

“These assets, estimated in petitions to the EFCC at over ₦10 billion, which I personally believe were underestimated, are alleged to be disproportionate to his known legitimate earnings before and during public office.”

Onoh said that this sudden accumulation of wealth, emerging prominently post-tenure, raises serious questions about its sources and legitimacy—questions that rightfully demand thorough investigation by the EFCC.

Onoh further stated that the ongoing EFCC probe, as of December 2025, focuses on allegations including abuse of office, money laundering, mismanagement of recovered Abacha loots (notably claims of duplication in recovering $310–$322.5 million tranches and questionable legal fees of up to $16.9 million paid to associates), and unexplained assets and not a witch-hunt.

“While he denies wrongdoing, describing the probe as politically motivated “witch-hunt” tied to his recent political activities, I make bold to say that Malami welds no strong political influence in kebbi state to warrant any witch-hunt by even a local government chairman in his state, let alone the EFCC and his calls for the EFCC Chairman’s recusal is simply laughable.

“His continuous reference to chapter 9 of the Justice Salami Report only shows the desperation of a drowning man, let me make clear to Malami that the said justice Salami Report was so beneficial to the progress of Nigeria yet he withheld it all these years and only now he thinks it serves his personal purpose that it becomes relevant.

“In a country like China, such revelation by Malami would have earned him a death sentence for sabotaging a nation. One can not come to a document and only accept a page that benefits him, you either accept as a whole or refuse as a whole. The petitions from credible groups like HEDA and others warrant independent scrutiny.”

Onoh challenged Malami to refute his narrative of his humble beginnings prior to his unexplainable wealth, which the EFCC in discharge of their mandate will soon explain which onoh said will be more explosive than Abacha’s loot.

Onoh furthermore said that the Malami he knew was actively engaged in politics, particularly with opposition parties leading to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC):

“Malami was appointed Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice by late President Muhammadu Buhari, becoming the youngest minister in the cabinet at age 48. He was re-appointed in 2019 and served until May 2023.

“Prior to this role, the Malami I know was primarily a prominent private legal practitioner in Northern Nigeria, a senior advocate with public service experience, and an influential figure in opposition politics contributing to the APC’s formation.”

Onoh challenged Malami to provide any credible records indicate involvement in high-profile federal roles or Tax payments of a successful thriving business venture before 2015.

“Malami’s attempts to discredit the EFCC—alleging bias, vendetta, and intimidation—appear designed to deploy every resource at his disposal to blackmail and undermine the agency. As a former Chief law officer, he should submit fully to investigation rather than resist or deflect.”

Onoh said that his hypocrisy is stark when recalling Malami’s role in the controversial naira redesign policy of 2022–2023. Himself, late Gov.Rotimi Akredolu of blessed memory and  Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (then Governor of Kaduna), were the only Governors that were bold to support his stand against naira design solely aimed at frustrating  Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition to the detriment of all Nigerians publicly opposed the policy, highlighting its devastating hardship on ordinary Nigerians, questionable timing ahead of elections, and potential political motivations.

“I recall El-Rufai described it as a mistake that deceived President Buhari and caused unnecessary suffering. I publicly attack the then CBN governor Godwin Emefiele (currently under investigation) and Malami especially for misleading Buhari into unconstitutional actions, such as bypassing consultations with the National Council of State or Federal Executive Council. I called the both   “public enemies” for defending the policy amid public hardship. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled (March 3, 2023) the policy unconstitutional in parts, extending old notes’ validity to December 31, 2023, Yet same  Malami vigorously defended it in court and publicly, even as the federal government under his legal advice disregarded Supreme Court interim orders suspending the deadline, leading to contempt threats and eventual ruling that parts were unconstitutional and criticizing late President Buhari’s unilateral directives.

“Later, the presidency (March 2023) stated that Buhari never instructed Malami or Emefiele to disobey court orders. This speaks volumes about the moral and professional character of the man that’s today accusing and blackmailing the EFCC and the Chairman of witch-hunt. He is safer under EFCC custody than at the mercy of Nigerians. Him and his convoy was attacked and nearly killed by the mob in his hometown resulting from the frustrations he subjected Nigerians under his watch while living in unearned opulence.

“Finally, as the custodian of the law tasked with recovering and protecting national assets—including billions in Abacha loots—Malami stands accused of re-looting or mismanaging the very funds he was mandated to safeguard. This betrayal of public trust is profound.

“Every right-thinking Nigerian must rise in defence of the EFCC. Allow the agency to perform its statutory duty without fear or favour. Corruption fights back fiercely, but accountability must prevail for Nigeria’s progress,” Onoh stated.

  • Controversy over zoning in Kwara

    Controversy over zoning in Kwara

2027 general elections are less than two years across Nigeria. But the fever of the election has started catching up with many in Kwara state.

In deed, the agitation for the governorship seat to shift to Kwara North senatorial district has become strident and momentous.

Youths from Kwara North have been at forefront of the clamour for power to change hand to the region.

Expectedly, some groups have opposed the zoning idea, arguing that the best candidate should be allowed to emerged seamlessly from any of the senatorial districts of the state.

Right from the onset, current Governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq had promised to hand over reins of power to somebody from the north, but the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had ruled out fielding a candidate from the district.

PDP fielded Alhaji Abdullahi Yama, Kwara northerner as its governorship candidate in the 2023 election. His kinsmen did not support him. They claimed it was not yet their turn.

Predictably, the three notable politicians from Kwara North that have indicated interest in the governorship race are from APC.

They are Senator Umar Sodiq, Engr Yakubu Danladi Salihu and Alhaji Tajudeen Audu.

Sodiq is currently representing Kwara North in the Senate, Hon Salihu is the Speaker of the state House of Assembly and Audu is the Makama of Lafiagii.

Though, the governorship hopefuls had reached an agreement to support anyone that lands the APC ticket.

Curiously too, no politician from either Kwara Central or Kwara South has indicated interest in the race.

Leading the clamour for power to get to Kwara North in 2027 is a group known as Kwara North Youth Consultative Forum (KNYCF).

The forum had accordingly engaged its youths counterparts in the central and southerner districts for support and understanding in the interest of justice, fairness and equity.

KNYCF’s Chairman, Dr Abduldayan Haruna hinted that the Kwara North governorship aspiration is not a sectional cause but a collective quest for justice.

“Our demand is simple and sincere – Kwara North has stood with others over the years; now, it is our turn to be supported. This is about fairness, inclusion, and the unity of Kwara State,” he said.

Corroborating the chair, the forum’s Spokesperson Nura Muhammed restated the historical and political bonds between Kwara North and the Ibolo land, emphasizing the importance of equity in sustaining harmony in the state.

He observed that while Kwara central had occupied the governorship seat for over 20 years and Kwara South for eight years, Kwara North has yet to produce a governor in the state’s 26-year democratic history.”

Traditional rulers of Kwara North extraction have lent their royal voices to the clamour.

They therefore, urged all political parties in the state to zone their governorship seat to the senatorial district during the 2027 elections.

The insisted that it is the turn of the region to produce the next governor of the state.

The monarchs under the aegis of Kwara state Council of Chiefs and Obas, said this at a meeting to deliberate on the prevailing security situation in Kwara North region.

The meeting took place at the palace of Etsu Patigi, who is the Vice Chair of the council, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II.

The engagement, with the theme “Kwara North Unity, Security and Way Forward – Project 2027.”

In a communique at the end of the engagement signed by Etsu Bologi, Emir of Lafiagi, Muhammed Umar Kudu Kawu, Emir of Kaiama Alhaji Muazu Shehu Omar (Kiyaru iV), Etsu Tsaragi: HRH Alhaji Aliyu Abdullahi  Kpotwa, Emir of Okuta Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu Serobeteye, Emir of Ilesha Baruba Alhaji (Prof) Halidu Abubakar and Oba of Jebba Oba Abdulkadir Adebara said “that in the spirit of fairness, equity, and justice, it is the rightful turn of Kwara North to produce the next governor of Kwara State in 2027.”

They identified unity as the strongest tool for achieving this aspiration, urging stakeholders to set aside past differences and work together in the collective interest of the region.

The communique also “resolved that alliances must be built with Kwara Central and Kwara South, and that advocacy be extended beyond the state—particularly to Abuja, national party leadership, and other critical political actors.

“The priority at this stage is ensuring that political parties zone their governorship ticket to Kwara North, and stakeholders committed to supporting the processes and ultimately the Kwara North candidate who emerges.”

The monarchs took their message of equity and fairness to their Kwara South counterparts through a town hall meeting.

Etsu Patigi Alhaji Umar Bologi ll said the engagement was aimed at strengthening unity and developing a coordinated security framework for communities across both senatorial districts.

The first class monarch eminded the gathering that since the return of democracy in 1999, Kwara South and Kwara Central have both produced governors while Kwara North has not.

He appealed for Kwara South’s support in ensuring equity and political inclusion in 2027.

Kwara South monarchs described the request as fair and deserving.

In his remarks, Chairman of Kwara South Traditional Rulers, Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, said the meeting was “historic and a welcome development.”

On his part, Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Muhammed Gbadamosi said that Kwara North was not asking for too much by seeking their support.

The Alofa of Illofa, Oba Engr. Samuel Niyi Dada; the Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Abdulraheem Oladele Adeoti; and the Elese of Igbaja, Oba (Dr.) Ahmed Babalola Awuni, also praised the engagement, saying it was one of the most impactful in recent times.

Group known as Kwara Integrity Movement (KIM) countered and said the 2027 governorship election in Kwara state is open to any of the three senatorial districts.

KIM added that such agitation would amount to “reducing Kwara to zoning politics.”

KIM Chairman, Hon Oniwara Babatunde said that “Kwara requires the best minds, the boldest ideas and the strongest leadership not sectional leader.”

Hon Babatunde encouraged every qualified, credible and visionary Kwaran from any of the three senatorial districts to step forward and contest the 2027 governorship election.

Said he: “Our position is clear, we want a free, open and competitive 2027 governorship election.

“KIM believes elections must be open to all; merit must defeat mediocrity; leadership must be chosen by competence not geography and Kwara needs a governor for all.

“As a people, we must reject any arrangement that undermines democracy, reduces leadership to ethnicity or cages political opportunity within artificial boundaries.”

Continuing, KIM chair added that “the agitation for zoning raises fundamental questions that Kwarans must ask boldly: For whom is the zoning agitation being championed? Is it genuinely for the people of Kwara North or for personal ambition of a few? Does the agitation suggest that past and present governments have been unjust to Kwara North? Is this zoning being presented as a compensation or entitlement?

“At this point, it is important to raise a serious danger that is quietly creeping into our political culture– the coercion of our traditional rulers into partisan politics.

“Our highly revered obas and emirs travelling across the state for political lobby and advocacy should be totally avoided. Today, it is the traditional rulers, tomorrow the religious leaders and civil servants may follow suit. These are highly revered institutions that must be insulated from partisan politics.

Another group of APC Members in the state under the aegis of the Kwara Political Leaders of Thought (KPLOT) called on the national leadership of the APC not to impose governorship candidate on the state come 2027 general elections.

The group led by Mohammed Mariam Alhassan, also said that ideal leader for the in 2027 can come from any district of the state, adding that 2027 governorship should not be based on zoning.

The APC group advised the party’s national leadership and the presidency to be cautious on issue of who becomes Kwara state governorship candidate in the 2027 general elections.

Alhassan said that Kwara state is practically at war, especially due to insecurity challenges in some parts of the state, adding that, “wars are not won by convenience or sentiment, but by deliberate strategic, and competent leadership.

“Kwara is confronted today with realities that leave us with no

room for emotional politics, convenient assumptions, or

    premature conclusions.

    “The present reality demands sobriety,

honesty, and courage. It requires that our political decisions be

driven by capacity, competence, and character -not by sentiment or turn-by-turn calculations

“From Edu to Patigi, Ifelodun to Isin, and from Ekiti to Kaiama, Kwara state has, regrettably, become an epicentre of banditry and terrorism, a situation unprecedented in the history of our state.

“In the face of this crisis, it is no longer åcceptable to approach

leadership selection the way we might have done in more stable

times. If Kwara once had the luxury of making sentimental

political choices, that luxury no longer exists.

“The leadership question before us is no longer about where a

candidate comes from, but who that candidate is. Who has the competence to confront insecurity? Who has the capacity to rebuild confidence in governance? Who has the courage, experience, and vision to naigate Kwara out of its present challenges and secure its future?

    “These are the questions

occupying the minds of ordinary Kwarans across the state not the narrow, primordial sentiments being promoted by a section of the political class”, he said.

The group also said that the ideal leader for Kwara in 2027 can come from anywhere; North, South, or Central, adding that, “If the best and most capable candidate emerges from the North, we must not hesitate to support such a person. If that candidate comes from the South, the same principle must apply. If competence and capacity reside in the Central, we must equally embrace it”.

“At this critical moment, limiting our choices based on zoning or primordial sentiment is dangerous, and the consequences will be borne by all Kwarans”, he said.

The people also called on traditional rulers in the state to steer clear of partisan politics and political agitations and permutations, saying that, “the throne derives its strength from neutrality, moral authority, and the trust of all subjects, irrespective of their political leanings.

“Once a royal institution is dragged into partisan battles, it risks losing its unifying essence and the sacred distance that commands reverence. Monarchs must remember that their domains are

home to people of diverse and often conflicting political

interests; aligning with one tendency, no matter the temptation

or promised reward, inevitably alienates others and erodes the

    sanctity of the stool”.

Mutfwang’s defection: what does it portend for Northcentral

After months of rumours, denials, counter-denials and political shadowboxing, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has finally taken the step many had predicted but few could time.

His defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has not only redrawn the political map of Plateau State but also reshaped its political landscape. Still, it has also handed the APC complete control of the North-Central geopolitical zone.

The announcement came in Abuja during the APC’s 14th National Caucus meeting at the State House Conference Centre. National Chairman of the party, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, broke the news to party leaders and stakeholders.

“With the defection of Governor Mutfwang, the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC,” Yilwatda said, describing the move as a significant boost to the party’s regional dominance.

For Plateau, the development ended over a year of intense speculation that had consumed political conversations across the state. From Jos to Shendam, from party offices to beer parlours, the question was the same: would Mutfwang defect or not?

The rumours gained momentum against the backdrop of a nationwide political realignment that has seen governors, lawmakers, and party heavyweights steadily migrate into the APC, leaving the PDP weakened and fragmented. The Plateau was no exception. Several PDP stalwarts, including former lawmakers, ex-senators, and top campaign figures from the 2023 elections, had already crossed over, fuelling the belief that the governor’s move was only a matter of time.

Yet Mutfwang repeatedly dismissed the claims, insisting he had no intention of leaving the party that brought him to office. At one point, he even accused the APC of mounting pressure on him.

“An attempt has indeed been made for me to join the APC, which I have refused to bow to,” he said at the time. “Only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people.”

Rather than calming nerves, those denials deepened suspicion. As more PDP leaders defected and APC influence grew stronger on the Plateau, the political atmosphere became increasingly tense.

Reacting to the eventual defection, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Inter-Party Relations, John Akans, said the decision was neither sudden nor personal. In a telephone interview, Akans stressed that Mutfwang did not act alone.

“This is not a unilateral decision by the governor,” he said. “It is the collective decision of stakeholders across the state. Consultations were wide, deep, and inclusive. Party leaders, political allies, and grassroots actors were all carried along before this step was taken.”

Akans said the move reflected the prevailing political reality and Plateau leaders’ desire to reposition the state within the national power structure.

“The stakeholders believe this move will better position Plateau State to attract federal presence, deepen political inclusion, and accelerate development,” he explained. “The governor remains committed to the mandate given to him by the people, irrespective of the party platform.”

He described the defection as more than a routine political switch.

“This is a movement, not just a defection,” Akans said. “It is a realignment aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring Plateau State is not left out of national political calculations and dynamics.”

According to him, concerns that the defection might distract the government were unfounded. “The governor’s focus remains on peace, unity, and delivering good governance to the people of Plateau State,” he added.

The decision, however, has not been without controversy. While pro-Mutfwang groups hailed it as a strategic move that would unlock federal goodwill and restore Plateau’s voice at the centre, some APC loyalists initially resisted the idea of welcoming a sitting PDP governor into their fold.

Groups opposed to the move raised concerns about governance, internal party balance, and the fate of existing APC structures in the state. Others argued that aligning with the centre was a political necessity rather than an ideological choice.

Despite the disagreements, the national leadership of the APC appears to have prevailed, seeing the governor’s entry as consistent with its broader expansion strategy. With Yilwatda, a Plateau indigene, as national chairman, Mutfwang’s defection also carries symbolic weight for the party.

For the PDP, the loss is another painful blow in a season of steady decline. Once dominant in the North-Central, the party now finds itself shut out of the region’s governorship seats, raising questions about its ability to halt further defections ahead of future elections.

For Plateau State, the long months of uncertainty have given way to a new political reality. Whether the promises of stronger federal ties and accelerated development will materialise remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the “hullabaloo” is over.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has made his choice, and with it, the APC has secured total control of the North-Central zone.

  • Is Edo rising under Okpebholo?

    Is Edo rising under Okpebholo?

The mantra of Governor Monday Okpebholo is “A new Edo has Risen”. OSAGIE OTABOR reports on his activities and resolve to hire and fire any political appointee.

Governor Monday Okpebholo has given his administration a thumbs-up for its achievements over the last year, especially in implementing his five-point “SHINE” agenda. To Governor Okpebholo and his supporters, the implementation of the SHINE agenda has improved critical areas of the Edo economy. The SHINE agenda is an acronym for Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Natural Resources & Agriculture, and Education.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, said Edo was bleeding before the emergence of Governor Okpebholo. Afegbua likened Okpebholo’s intervention in Edo State to a panel beater fixing a badly damaged vehicle after an accident. Afegbua said the state was already being fixed in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and all sectors of the economy.

Presenting his one-year report sheet, Governor Okpebholo said he met a state weighed down by rot, debt, insecurity, and distrust, but that with determination, prayer, and teamwork, his administration has begun to restore hope, rebuild institutions, and renew confidence in government. He has done away with the use of consultants to execute government business and ensure civil servants are adequately motivated to do their job.

Governor Okpebholo resolved to end kidnappings, cult killings, cultism, and armed robbery. He saw the creation of a Special Security Squad in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. He ensured that new anti-cultism and anti-kidnapping laws were enacted. Convicted kidnappers in Edo State now face the death penalty, while several houses suspected of being used for kidnapping activities have been demolished across the state. The governor said, “Edo was almost a war zone, plagued by cult killings, kidnappings, armed robbery, and cybercrime when he came on board.

“We acted decisively, repealed the weak anti-cultism law, passed a stronger one, supplied 60 Hilux vans and 400 motorcycles to security agencies, and recruited and trained 2,500 officers into the Edo State Security Corps. These measures have drastically reduced insecurity. Edo will no longer be a safe place for criminals.”

In his pursuit of quality healthcare, Governor Okpebholo commenced construction of a new 100-bed Specialist Hospital and a new School of Nursing in Udomi, in the Esan Central local government area. His administration has also built over 50 Primary Health Centres across the state.

Two legacy projects of Governor Okpebholo are the flyovers at the Ramat Park and Adesuwa Junction along Sapele Road. The governor said his administration has awarded 28 new road projects totaling 255 kilometers across the state.

According to him, “We inherited over N600 billion in local and foreign debts and N180 billion owed to contractors. Through prudent management and transparency under our SHINE Agenda, we have significantly reduced this burden. We have also created over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs and launched a N1 billion interest-free loan scheme for small businesses and traders.”

However, political appointees of Governor Okpebholo now sleep with one eye open. They never know who will be sacked or suspended in the dead of the night. That has been the style of Governor Okpebholo toward his appointees: he can hire and fire. His former Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, was kicked out in the dead of the night. Besides Itua, others who were suspended or sacked at night were former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Samson Osagie; former Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Hon Damian Lawal; former Special Adviser on Oil and Gas, Felix Isere; former Managing Director, EdoGIS, Tony Ikpasajah, amongst others.

Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole and Senator representing Edo North Senatorial district, said the ability for Governor Okpebholo to hire and fire showed he was a man of steel.

“The remodeling and reconstruction of markets across Edo State is a testament to your connection with our womenfolk, who form the bedrock of our rural and urban communities.

“Okpebholo’s actions speak louder than words. Edo State is once again shining as a beacon of progress and good governance.”

The traditional institution got a taste of Governor Okpebholo’s resolve to right the wrongs. He has sacked four conventional rulers in his first year. They are Lukman Akemokue, who was appointed Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in 2024 by former Governor Godwin Obaseki. His appointment was revoked for failing to comply with succession laws, and Mike Sadoh was installed as the new Okuokpellagbe of Okpella in 2025. Laze Dr. George Oshiapi Egabor was removed as Okumagbe of Uwanno kingdom, Etsako East local government area, due to incessant kidnappings and killings in his domain. Other traditional rulers sacked were Bamidele Obaitan of Ososo Kingdom and Zaiki Luckman Odamah III of the Ikpeshi/Egbegere clan, both in Akoko-Edo local government area.

At the inception of Okpebholo’s administration, residents raised eyebrows when the Atalakpa Recovery Concept Ltd, a private firm owned by Tony Kabaka Adun, was engaged as Enforcement Consultant for the Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS). Moreover, several drivers’ unions returned to motor parks and bus stops. They included the Drivers Welfare Scheme, Professional Drivers on Wheels, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, and others. Commercial drivers who hitherto paid N800 daily were made to pay between N2,000 and N10,000. Besides the high payment, which does not go into government coffers, the drivers were daily harassed and beaten.

Public outcry and a drop in Edo IGR led Governor Okpebholo to ban their activities in August this year. Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, said the groups violated the conditions of their engagement and resorted to cash collections, extortions, social harassment, and intimidation.

Apart from the transport unions, Governor Okpebholo also banned unions in all markets in the state due to rising food prices.

To the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, Governor Okpebholo’s achievements do not match the huge revenue accruing to the state. It said there was no evidence of the vast funds in the state.

State Chairman of Edo PDP, Tony Aziegbemi, at a press briefing, said there was no corresponding improvement in infrastructure, no visible expansion of social services, no renewal of public institutions, and no measurable uplift in the lives of ordinary Edo people.

“Roads are deteriorating, not improving. Public utilities are struggling. Local government areas are functionally paralysed, and basic governance is absent.

“This stark disconnect between massive federal allocations and negligible outcomes raises serious concerns about fiscal responsibility, value for money, and the priorities of the current administration.

“Even more troubling is the fact that statutory allocations continue to be released to unelected local government impostors, while duly elected chairmen, who have secured court judgments, are excluded from office. The Edo people are therefore forced to ask whether public funds are being deployed for development or merely circulated within an illegitimate administrative structure.

“One year after assuming office, the Edo State Government has failed to articulate any coherent development blueprint, policy framework, or governing philosophy. There is no published agenda against which citizens can measure performance, no sectoral roadmap, and no clearly defined priorities.

“What Edo people have experienced instead is drift, reactionary governance, policy inconsistency, propaganda without substance, and a steady erosion of democratic and institutional norms painstakingly built over the last eight years.”

  • BAO effect: celebrating Oyebanji, the change agent at 58

BAO effect: celebrating Oyebanji, the change agent at 58

    By Olayinka Oyebode

Christmas indeed came early for the people of Ekiti State this year. For them the celebration begun on December 10th when the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport in Ado-Ekiti commenced commercial flight operations signaling a new phase of development under the leadership of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as Governor of the State. On that day, Ekiti did not just celebrate the birth of a world class airport which invariably will bring the markets and the world closer to Ekiti, the people celebrated the power of vision and the beauty of unity. The emphasis was on how unity breeds peace, how peace breeds progress and how that translates into shared prosperity under a visionary leader.

The presence of all the four former governors of the state at the airport event, (three of them on board the inaugural flight), supporting the incumbent Governor and each being given his due recognition for their roles in the airport project and in Ekiti development generally, was a classical example of true leadership. The fragrance of that air of unity was not only sweet to the ear, it was a beauty to behold. It speaks to what a state or a people can achieve when they work in unity. It speaks to the leadership qualities of Governor Oyebanji, whose politics of inclusion has brought every leader and every tendency together in the overall interest of the Ekiti people.

Barely a week after that glorious outing, precisely on December 18th, it was the turn of 4,567 young Ekiti farmers, under the Bring Back the Youth in Agriculture scheme to shine. Governor Oyebanji had presented a total one billion naira cheque to the young farmers as their profit for the 2025 harvest, under the initiative which is being done in partnership with a private concern, YSJ Limited. Exactly a year earlier, the Governor had presented N145 million naira cheque to 911 young farmers- the pioneer set of the initiative. Within a year, enrolment into the scheme moved from 1,000 to 5,000 across the sixteen local government areas of the state.   This was achieved through government’s strategic support to the farmers which came in form of free land clearing, provision of seedling, agric extenstion services, tractorisation and market linkages, which in turn has made farming a profitable business in Ekiti.

So, for the families of the 4,567 youth farmers Christmas actually came early, courtesy of an impactful leader who was born this season some fifty-eight years ago, and who is redefining governance,  making every day count, making everyday a celebration- (Ojo gbogbo bi odun), by virtue of  effective implementation of his six-pillar development agenda and by making the people the centre focus of his policies and programmes.

Oyebanji stands out as a true leader of the people. As noted by a former American President, Ronald Regan, “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things, but the one who gets people to do the greatest things”. Oyebanji takes pride in creating economic opportunities for the people, he priortises their welfare and wellbeing. Little wonder the people of Ekiti celebrate BAO, as he is fondly called, not only on his birthday but daily with unparalleled gusto.

History teaches us that leaders that are most respected are those who inspire people to stand for something. Governor Oyebanji fits into this category of leaders perfectly because his leadership is characterized by a strong commitment to service, truth and loyalty, emphasizing empowerment over power and inspiring change through practical example. Above all, he believes in the grace of God and the power in His name. Gratitude remains BAO’s lifestyle. He regularly ascribes his success in public service to the special grace he enjoys from God; and the support of the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; as well as the massive support of Ekitikete home and abroad.

Oyebanji believes Ekiti people, highly rated for their intellect, have no business with poverty. “How can people be brilliant and at the same time be poor.”  His six –pillar development agenda anchored on the mantra of shared prosperity for all, was designed to provide the right answer to that poser. Human Capital Development via education- free, qualitative and compulsory from primary to senior secondary school as well as health care delivery –that is available and accessible. The huge investments in human capital development has led to comprehensive renovation of 203 secondary schools and over 900 primary schools, including the state’s special schools. Teaching quality is now better enhanced through proper motivation for teachers and provision of  modern learning and teaching facilities. Recently the Governor facilitated the training of 2,000 youths in advanced digital skills including cyber security, software development, artificial intelligence and data analytics in a bid to  prepare them for strategic roles in the digital revolution that is bound to happen when the Ekiti Knowledge Zone takes off.   Healthcare followed the same logic with comprehensive renovation and equipment of nine general hospitals, and about 105 primary health centres across the state. Through the Ulerawa initiatives, every resident of the state now enjoys and explicit and guaranteed package of essential services, free at the point of care.

Infrastructure is another battlefield where BAO has recorded his most visible laurels. Just about two months ago, he commissioned for use 10 major road projects. This is in addition to about 25 others that had earlier been delivered and put to use. Similarly, his intervention in power infrastructure has led to the reconnection of scores of communities to the national grid. Currently the state is constructing 2×60 MVA transmission stations in Ikere, Ijesa-Isu and Ilupeju Ekiti, while the state’s Independent Power Project (IPP) is powering major government institutions and private businesses.

Oyebanji’s political trajectory is one of the most inspiring in recent history. His journey to the Oke Ayoba Government House started some three years and two months ago. Or, as many have come to believe, it started some 30 years earlier when, as a young university lecturer, he joined the struggle for the creation of Ekiti State in the nineties, where he served as secretary to the Committee on State Creation Committee headed by Chief Deji Fasuan. Working with the committee, which consisted of traditional rulers, and frontline Ekiti leaders, he had a clear understanding of the vision of the founding fathers of the State. The creation of Ekiti State in 1996 paved the way for the first democratically elected state government in May 1999 under the leadership of Governor Niyi Adebayo. Biodun Oyebanji joined the government as a Special Assistant (Parliamentary Affairs) to the Governor, marking his foray into public service. He also served as Special Adviser (Parliamentary Affairs) and later as Chief of Staff to the Governor. During the first term of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, BAO served at different times as Commissioner, Ministry of Integration and Inter-Governmental Affairs; Head, Office of Transformation Strategy and Delivery (OTSD)  and Commissioner, Ministry of Budget, Economic Planning and Service Delivery. He also served as Secretary to the State Government between 2018 to 2021, when he resigned to contest the governorship election, which he won and was inaugurated as Governor on October 16, 2022.

On the political turf, BAO’s rare simplicity continues to make him the darling of the people. He feels at home with the grassroots. He attends ward meetings and interacts freely with party faithful. He leads the youth on hiking at Ikogosi and Efon Alaaye hills. On a large scale he regularly holds stakeholders engagement, where he receives feedbacks from the people on quarterly basis. Prior to his emergence as the first ever consensus governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the June 2026 election, no fewer than 350 groups and associations had publicly declared their support for him. This is in addition to the massive support he got from all the former governors of the state, all National and state assembly members as well as the traditional institution and other critical stakeholders.

Since assuming office, Governor Oyebanji has demonstrated that governance can be calm yet impactful, inclusive yet decisive. Under his stewardship Ekiti State has emerged top in some development indices. These include : First position in the BudgIT State Fiscal Transparency League (Q 2. Q 3, 2024 and Q1,and 2, 2025); Ranked first in the PSLI Subnational Audit Efficacy Index (2023); First in the Annual Growth Rate of IGR (2023). Under his watch Ekiti State established the first adapted classrooms in public special schools for Children with Disabilities in Nigeria. Ekiti was also ranked as the state with the second lowest out of school children in Nigeria. Quite importantly, is the significant reduction in infant mortality by 57 percent from 42 per 1,000 in 2019 to 18 per 1,000 in 2024; and infant mortality which reduced by 53 per cent from 57 per 1,000 in 2019 to 44 per 1,000 in 2024.

Today, I join family, friends, associates, and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond to celebrate a man of uncommon grace, a jinx breaker, a unifier, a change agent, “Mr Solution” the one Ekitikete love to call “Omoluabi Gomina” or “Gomina ayiye”, His Excellency, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as he marks his 58th birthday. Happy Birthday Your Excellency. The celebration has just begun.

  • Bayelsa: Who takes over from Ewhrudjakpo as deputy governor?

Bayelsa: Who takes over from Ewhrudjakpo as deputy governor?

Following the death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Senior Correspondent, Okungbowa Aiwerie, examines its wider political implications and the search for his successor.

Although the Nigerian Constitution does not specify a time limit within which a new deputy governor must be appointed if the position becomes vacant, the sudden death of Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has, undoubtedly, created a vacuum in the state’s leadership structure that needs to be filled.

The constitution empowers the governor of the affected state to nominate a replacement, but requires confirmation by a simple majority of the State House of Assembly. It mandates “due legislative and constitutional procedures.”

Following the tragic events of last week, the Bayelsa government declared a three-working-day mourning period while also dedicating its weekly five-kilometre ‘Prosperity Walk’, among other activities, in honour of the departed deputy governor.

Governor Douye Diri, in a statement, paid glowing tribute to the memory of the deceased, describing his death as “profoundly shocking, adding that the deceased “was active and carrying out official duties earlier in the day.”

According to a statement by Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Bayelsa Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, all flags in public buildings are to fly at half-mast,

Continuing, “His demise is not just painful, it is a great loss to the Government, people of Bayelsa State and the nation. Senator Ewhrudjakpo was an accomplished public servant who served the State with distinction as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District and Deputy Governor since 2020.

“Governor Douye Diri, on behalf of the Government and people of Bayelsa State, expresses heartfelt condolences to his wife, Her Excellency, Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, Ofoni Federated Community, His Excellency, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and all citizens of the State.

“Consequently, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, has declared a state mourning for three working days in honour of the late Deputy Governor beginning from today, Friday, December 12, 2025. All flags are to fly at half-mast.”

Although Bayelsans are not unaccustomed to a vacancy in the office of the Deputy Governor, albeit through the death of its occupant. In 2005, the impeachment of Bayelsa Governor DSP Alameseigha created room for his deputy, Goodluck Jonathan, to step in as Governor. And with the office of Deputy Governor vacant, Rt Hon Peremobowei Ebiebi, then Speaker, was nominated as Deputy Governor.

But where would the pendulum swing this time? Who becomes the next deputy governor of the state?

The Nation gathered that four persons have emerged as front-runners, including incumbent Speaker, Rt Hon Abraham Ingobere, Dr Peter Akpe, Chief of Staff to Gov. Diri, APC State Chairman, Dr Dennis Otiotio and Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, elder brother to the late deputy governor.

While Governor Douye Diri’s choice of replacement should not pose a significant challenge, given the array of qualified persons, there is agitation in some quarters that the zoning principle be respected.

Stakeholders insist the next occupant must come from Sagbama LGA, the local government area of the deceased.

A former Bayelsa Commissioner for Youth Development and ex-President, Ijaw Youth Congress (IYC), Udengs Eradiri, in a telephone interview, expressed sadness over the death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, whom he said brought “value to governance.”

He added that the right person for the job must have experience in dealing with political and administrative issues and have occupied leadership positions in organisations.

He argued that a top civil servant or a military officer would be best suited for the job, having acquired relevant competencies in the course of their careers.

Analysing the broader political implications of the deputy governor’s demise,  Eradiri said Ewhrudjakpo’s replacement must be “politically astute and blessed with profound intellect and capacity to manage stakeholders,” adding that Gov Diri must nominate a politician with political clout and pedigree as the nation braces up for the 2027 elections.

He said, “ Gov Diri is in a tight situation. I don’t envy him because within a short period, he must pick someone who will fill that space. The occupant of that office must be able to support the governor the way Bayelsa has always operated. Diri needs someone who is politically astute because of the 2027 elections. Someone who can hold the reins of government while he is politicking. We have always had eminent personalities holding this position in the past. We have had as deputy governor, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd) and now Dr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who recently passed away.”

Besides, state PDP are insisting the new deputy governor be drawn from its ranks, arguing that the late Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo was, until his death a card-carrying PDP member.

Although several calls and text messages to Bayelsa PDP Chairman, Chief Solomon Agwanana, were not returned, a source who spoke on condition of anonymity maintained that the party’s input is vital, especially when the late deputy governor was a card-carrying member until his demise.

His words, “It is indeed a tragic situation that we find ourselves as a party with the demise of a leading light of our great party. Let’s be clear on this issue. Our party reserves the right to contribute to whoever gets nominated for the deputy governorship position. Originally, Gov Diri and Erhwujakpo are on a joint ticket and should be allowed to make an input on who becomes the next second- in- command. In the interest of peace and justice, our party should be carried along.”

Of the four front-runners, two, including Dr Peter Akpe and Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, meet zoning requirements for leadership positions in the state, both from Bayelsa West.

The Speaker, Rt Hon. Abraham Ingobere and Dr Dennis Otiotio, who both hail from Bayelsa East, may face an uphill task to claim the position as their nominations might upset zoning principles.

Dr Peter Akpe is the current Chief of Staff to Gov Douye Diri and hails from Sagbama LGA in Bayelsa West Senatorial District.

He was appointed in March 2024, and previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff (2020-2023), Acting Chief of Staff (2023-Feb 2024), Head of Administration, and member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. A veteran public administrator with a PhD in Administration & Planning.

Dr Akpe worked in both the Rivers and Bayelsa State Civil Service for over 20 years and retired as Assistant Director.

He also served as Head of Administration, Office of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State (2006–2007), Commissioner with the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission (2008–2011), a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and was Leader of the House between 2011 and 2019.

The astute administrator is a fellow of several professional bodies, a 5th Degree Black Belter and Certified Kukiwon Coach in Taekwondo, and is currently the Pastor-in-Charge of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Bayelsa Province 1 and a part-time Lecturer with the Redeemed Christian Bible College, University of Ede, Osun State.

Chief Dennis Otiotio Odoni (PhD) is a prominent Nigerian legal practitioner and politician currently serving as the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State.

He was born on October 25, 1972, in Nembe (Bassambiri), Bayelsa State.

In April 2025, he was appointed by President Tinubu as the Chairman of the Governing Board for the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu, Ebonyi State. He is a seasoned solicitor and researcher focusing on legal frameworks for hydrocarbon resources and operates the law firm D.I.D. Otiotio & Co. in Yenagoa.

Rt Hon Abraham Ingobere was born in 1974 and hails from Brass LGA and currently serves as the 7th speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly since 6 June 2023.

Ingobere is a member of the All Progressives Congress, representing Brass Constituency 3 in the state legislature. A 4th term member of the assembly, he served as the 6th speaker of the House and was re-elected speaker of the 7th assembly unchallenged on 6 June 2023.

He is a grassroots politician who is much loved by his constituents.

He is perceived as Gov Diri’s loyalist and a dependable political ally, who defected along with 17 members of the state legislature to the APC with the governor.

The major drawback to his ambition is the fact that ,he hails from Bayelsa East. Besides, with the zoning arrangements in the state, his senatorial district is poised to produce the next Bayelsa Governor in 2028. Will he forgo nomination for deputy Governor and hope to clinch the APC gubernatorial ticket in 2028 when Gov Diri’s tenure lapses?

Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, the elder brother of the late deputy governor recently retired as permanent secretary in the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education. He is currently an aide to Governor Diri.

Although little known politically, his pedigree as a top functionary may stand him in good stead.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emphasis on security and road infrastructure in the 2026 Appropriation Bill has been described as people centred and responsive to Nigeria’s most pressing development challenges.

The Minister of State for Works, Rt. Hon. Bello Goronyo, said the President deserves broad commendation, noting that the strong allocation to security in the 2026 budget reflects a clear resolve to safeguard lives and property.

Goronyo, in a statement on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media, Abdullahi A. Mohammed, stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved in an environment undermined by insecurity.

The Minister said that by prioritising security in the budget, the President has taken a decisive step that will not only protect citizens but also unlock economic opportunities by boosting investor confidence, expanding business activities and reinforcing national stability.

He also praised the substantial allocation to road infrastructure, saying sustained investment in the construction, rehabilitation and completion of federal highways would ease transportation difficulties and address long standing mobility challenges.

Goronyo said improved road networks would significantly reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs and improve access to markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services for millions of Nigerians.

The Minister said the combined focus on security and infrastructure, alongside ongoing economic reforms, fiscal discipline and investments in education and health, would help ease the hardship currently faced by citizens.

He said these priorities were critical to job creation, economic growth and improving the overall quality of life across the country.

Goronyo assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Works would fully implement all road projects approved in the 2026 budget, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also called on stakeholders, including State governments, contractors and host communities, to support the timely execution of road projects nationwide, stressing that collaboration was essential to delivering the expected benefits of the budget to Nigerians.

Osun 2026: Governance is a serious business, says APC candidate Oyebamiji

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for the August 8, 2026 election in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), has declared that governance is a serious responsibility that must not be entrusted to mediocre leadership.

Oyebamiji made the assertion shortly after receiving his Certificate of Return from the leadership of the APC at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

He said Osun State requires a competent and focused manager to effectively harness its vast human and material resources and deliver sustainable development to the people.

According to the governorship candidate, the APC is determined to reclaim Osun State in the 2026 governorship election and also secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.

“The business of governance is serious. Osun State is blessed with enormous human and material assets, and we need a serious manager to drive those assets. That serious manager is Bola Oyebamiji,” he said.

“Now that I have the support of the leaders and members of the party to represent the APC at the polls, we will carry that mandate forward. Come 2026 and 2027, we will deliver Osun for the APC at both the governorship and presidential elections. We will win massively to return the progressives to the Bola Ige House in 2026 and renew the mandate of Mr President in 2027.”

The former Osun State Commissioner for Finance described the issuance of his Certificate of Return as the beginning of a renewed journey to reposition the state on the path of progress, inclusive governance and accelerated development.

He pledged to build on the legacies of past progressive administrations while opening new frontiers of prosperity across critical sectors of the state’s economy.

“The journey ahead is clear. The task of reclaiming Osun is not just a campaign, but a calling. Today marks the beginning of a renewed march to restore our state to progress, inclusive governance and rapid development,” he said.

“We are committed to building on the legacies of progressive leaders before us and charting new paths of prosperity in education, healthcare, job creation and security for all residents of Osun.”

Oyebamiji called for unity within the APC, urging members and supporters to work together with discipline and purpose ahead of the polls.

“Let this moment serve as a clarion call to every APC member and supporter. Our collective mission to return Osun to the path of progress has begun. With unity, discipline and passion, we will mobilise our people, earn the confidence of every community and write a new chapter of hope and transformation for Osun,” he said.

The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) commended other aspirants for rallying behind him as the party’s consensus candidate, describing their support as a demonstration of confidence, faith and commitment to the APC’s ideals.

He also expressed appreciation to party leaders, elders and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for their support.

Oyebamiji specifically thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Chief Adebisi Akande; national leaders of the party; members of the APC National Executive Council led by the National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda; the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and leader of the APC in Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola; the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru; the APC State Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal; as well as party leaders and members at both the national and state levels for their unwavering backing.
