  • Versatility of ankara

    Versatility of ankara

ANKARA 2ANKARA now comes in several natty designs and the good thing is that you don’t have to empty your account before you are able to get one.

Though the good ones are expensive, either expensive or not, when a good designer does justice to an ankara fabric as an entity or stylishly mixed with other fabrics, people will certainly appreciate the result. In other words, the finished product depends on the designer; in fact, it is the designer that would determine whether your ankara would look cheap or out of this world.

Ankara is still sassily hot on the runway and has become a great leveller a fabric worn by the lowly and the well-to-do. Savvy designers are experimenting with ankara fabrics to sew all manner of designs, from the western to the African. The only snag is that ankara has not been used to sew bridal gowns or wedding dresses. The trend now is to wear your ankara as a top on jeans, or as a gown of any length and also as a capris pants with a “readymade” top, preferably black.

  • ‘Looks for 2016 will be more subtle’

‘Looks for 2016 will be more subtle’

An ex-economist turned make-up artist, Olayinka Akintomide, talks about her foray into the beauty industry and what 2016 holds in stock for women makeup-wise in this interview with Kehinde Oluleye.

Tell us a bit of yourself. My name is Olayinka Akintomide. I am the creative director at Blushville Makeovers Studio, graduate of Economics (Lagos State University) and a native of Osun State but resident in Lagos.

What inspired you to go into makeover business?

The passion for makeup application made me go into the business. I believe whatever career or business one engages in, there must be passion for it. Preceding my venture into professional makeup artistry, I was the go-to person for my friends any time they had occasions to attend. So, after graduating from school and because I didn’t want to stay at home jobless, my brother and I decided I needed to get professional training to hone my skills.

For how long have you been doing this?

Professionally, I started in 2012, four years ago.

Before opening Blushville, how were you operating?

Before opening Blushville Makeovers Studio, I was operating by word of mouth, referrals and through social media platform.

Apart from makeover, what other fashion items are you into?

Skin care products; cream and soap mixing, facials, body polishing, massaging, pedicure and a bit more are the other inclusions of our services.

Being around for a while, you must have witnessed a lot of changes in the makeover business.

Yes, there have been lots of changes in this business.  Makeup artists are bolder now, with colours and the overall effect of the looks they create.

There are more artists now compared to some time ago when we had just a handful of artists.

People are more conscious of their looks and what they want.

    Are you into men makeover?

Yes, I’m into men makeover, especially for photo-shoot, music videos and more.

Why is it a general belief that women’s makeover is more rewarding than men’s?

The women folk are more vain than their male counterparts, they care about their looks and appearance and would go all out to make sure they look good, sometimes not minding the financial cost, whereas most men will just dress up and they are good to go. So, financially, women’s makeover is more rewarding

Another aspect is that when one applies makeup for a woman the ‘before and after’ effect is usually wow.

And is it true that male customers are easier to deal with?

Yes, most male customers are easier to deal with….less attitude, they usually allow you do your job without stress. Most male customers have friendly disposition.

What kinds of products and colour do you love working with?

There are lots of quality makeup products available now; the list is endless. But I love working with Marykay, Mac, Inglot, Zaron, Revlon, Black Opal and so much more. For colour, I love working with red, I try to incorporate it into my looks.

    Who are your targets?

Anyone and everyone who loves to look gorgeous and confident for that special occasion.

What should women look out for in 2016, make-up-wise?

The looks for 2016 will be more subtle, less sculpted makeup look with emphasis on real skin makeup than overly sculpted looks (over contoured and highlighted).

What are the challenges faced in the course of doing your business?

There are lots of challenges; as a makeup product retailer, lots of people buy on credit to pay at a later date. This affects ability to restock more goods. Also, there are some artists who charge ridiculous prices for jobs, some charge so low an amount for makeup jobs that you wonder if they have bills to pay at all and some clients don’t understand what our job entails, they feel our job doesn’t justify our charges; this affects business a lot.

What is the ABC of a good make-up?

*Know your skin type – so you know what works best for you and the products to use.

*Select the right kind of products – always buy quality products so you don’t harm your skin

*Correct shade of foundation and powder in order not to create a ‘mask’ after application.

*When applying makeup you should lay emphasis on one part of the face, either the eyes or the lips, not both at the same time.

*And blending is key, blend your colours well; blend, blend, and blend.

How will you rate Nigerian make-up artists with their foreign counterparts?

Nigerian makeup artists can compete with their foreign counterparts. We’ve come a long way over the years and lots of artists have sprung up in recent times who know their onions. I believe we are at par with our foreign counterparts.

    What is style to you?

Style is being confident and comfortable in being yourself.

    Describe your style?

My style is casual-chic. I like casual wears.

    What determines what you wear?

The occasion, my mood and sometimes what I want to project.

  • Trend prediction for 2016

    Trend prediction for 2016

THE start of a new year does not mean that the new year fashion and trend will be all completely new. Although there will be those distinctly new elements and those distinctly new themes, a lot of the clothing and accessories we will be wearing in the early part of 2016 will be influenced by the most recent season (later part of 2015).

Given the buzz that fashion shows and new fads created in 2015, 2016 is certain to be an eventful year fashion-wise. First, we should expect designers to be daring and more innovative. This new spirit is going to be driven by the rise in the demand for trendy fashion accessories.

Going forward, we expect to see a serious infusion of graphic black and white fabric and designed local print.

What to get, what to keep and what to throw away all together? These are questions we are bound to ask as we move into any new year. For 2016 the options of what to keep are manly: you simply need to know how to give those key trend pieces from last year a 2016 refresh.

Skirt fashion: Fashionable skirts in 2016 will have a great deal of different variants, especially knee- length (short skirt). Different materials, textures, combinations of colours and famous classical cuts will make every skirt in this season very beautiful and unique. Last year, we found inspiration in indigenous fabrics in high-waist, skaters, asymmetrical and peplum style. Indigenous fabrics like ankara, aso oke and kampala were stylishly used to sew 60s, 70s and 80s, even 50s type’s western dresses.

What trends do you see becoming big in 2016? For Yewande Ojo of Yemak Fashion, 2016 is going to be an exciting year for the fashion industry. “We will be seeing a lot of glitters in fabrics and accessories like we see last year. Skaters and peplums too are out with 90s pointy with metallic details, to mention a few,” she said.

Ifeyinwa Odo of House of MISIANO said local fabrics like ankara, tie and dye (adire), and French lace, to mention  a few, are the fabrics to watch out for in 2016.

She said:“Watch out for more lace style inspirations, ankara prints with blings, floaty fabrics like chiffon and silk, soft organza and jersey, vintage velvet, floral and duchess satin, dry and floral cotton.” According to her, all these fabrics are going to be used for designing red carpet and casual wear in 2016.

  • Jewellery trends

    Jewellery trends

WITHOUT the array of colourful and often dazzling earrings and other jewelleries that women have used down the ages, women would sometimes look less attractive. Earrings add finishing touch to your look and complete your fashion statement.

As we look into the jewellery trends of 2016, we must get excited with the surprising new materials and new colour combinations. The introductions of flower and steel crown, studs and earring jackets, gold layering pieces, pastel and asymmetry materials will make the 2016 years so tasty.

On a more classic note, 2016 is also marked for the return of the vintage Victorian look, geometric shapes and well as a focus of the natural and tribal look of a variety of cultures.

One of the great inspirations for 2016 is the antique look and after a few runway shows, I noticed that the asymmetry era has been one of the most popular among many high end designers.

  • Why I’m into bridal fashion —Yeside Laguda

Why I’m into bridal fashion —Yeside Laguda

Youthful and elegant Yeside Laguda is the daughter of the Minister of Information, Culture and National Orientations, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. She unveiled her luxury store named MyQ Lifestyle last weekend. The graduate of the University of Reading, United Kingdom, spoke to KEHINDE OLULEYE on her designs and family life

HOW would you describe your bridal collections?

It’s two stores in one. The bridal shop is called Blush by MyQ. The parent company is called MyQ Lifestyle. MyQ Lifestyle is the result of my passion for fashion. We used to sew, but I needed to balance my work and family life. So, I decided to do something else. I went into the bridal fashion. The bridal industry cushions the fashion industry in Nigeria during the wedding season. When there is a high wedding season, what happens is that there is a lot of work and when there is a low wedding season, there is no work to do. So I decided to go into the industry. I decided to go into the wedding season which does not take a whole year. I have been in the industry for eight years. This is my ninth year, but with bridals, it started this year. I started planning this in January. What I did was that I started getting franchises and partnering with people. It’s not just a situation of going abroad, picking up dresses and coming to sell here. We partner with a lot of bridal stores. For now, it is the bridal stores, like Vera Wang. Since I cannot afford to be a partner, I go through the secondary market, people like Bridal O, a bridal store in London. I will go to them and explain what I want to do. And they will give them to me. Eventually, I’m selling at prices that they will sell. So we are trying to cut out the middle man. We do everything. Even if you have a dress, you have a veil. You want traditional attire, we give it to you.

    What about MyQ?

MyQ is an indigenous dress: the ankara, the caftan and others. We look at what our women want and cater for them.

So all the collections here are yours?

No. This (pointing to a collection) is not mine. I have different designs from top designers, Vera Wang, name it. We have them here. I buy from middle-eastern designers. I produce all my MyQ designs.

Did you go to a fashion school?

I didn’t. I’m a builder and a designer. I have a BSc in Environmental Chemistry and a Master’s in Strategic Management. As regards the collections and designs here, I can go to anywhere in the world to get them. The designs and collections that will suit my clients.

Can you tell us about your father who is now the Minister of Information?

He is someone who is dedicated to his work and family. My father is not driven by money. He will stand by you, if he believes in your cause and sees that the cause is achieved. He’s passionate about this country. He taught me to believe in myself.  A lot of times I go to my parents for support and they have always been there for me.

Have you worked for somebody before?

I have been doing business for a long time. We are getting a lot of dresses. When I was schooling in England, I used to supply many boutiques in Nigeria. I bought clothes, sent them to Nigeria and got my money. I have not really worked for somebody before.

Can you tell us about your designs?

My designs are simple, fashionable and not loud. My designs are not bogus. They are not loud.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am married and I have two children. I work and read a lot. I read Environmental Chemistry at the University of Reading,United Kingdom , and I did my Master’s in Strategic Management at the University of Wales, also in the United Kingdom.
