You first need to know the type of shade to use for that day and look for complementary palettes from your makeup kit then; you will face the mirror and set your makeup done. But if you are not the type who adores makeup application and simply opt for pressed powder and lipstick, then you have got to make sure that the kind of lipstick you’re using can solely standout!

When choosing a lipstick, don’t just pick for something that’s hot or the top notch shade, it’s best to know your skin type and the lipstick that matches. So, how can you possibly know if the lipstick matches your skin type and tone? Here’s the list of major types of lipsticks and its matching skin type and skin tone

    Matte lipstick

Matte lipsticks have flat colours that are far from the common glosses used for ages, and because of this, matte lipsticks look dry but can surely last long. Matte lipsticks work best on younger, smoother and plumper lips.

    Pearl/Frosted lipstick

  • Ever green braids

    Ever green braids

THE hair style called braid was popular between the 60s and the 80s and it has been around for a while. Interestingly, instead of fading out, it continues to appeal to many and you have so much braiding hair styles that you just cannot resist.

 Different cultures all over the world have always embraced the braid considering it a highly symbolic part of their identity and you have it popularised with names related to this countries like the French, Dutch and the Swiss braids. The hair style also seems to be evergreen and the hippie 60s saw many a double braid while fishtail braids were big in the 80s.

 Braids started long ago in history when women had to manage their hair carefully in old times. Women had to braid their hair so that it would be out of the way while they worked. The hair style called braid was well rocked by most celebrities who had their hair braided in different styles.

 Braids are a great way for girls to have fun with their hair and try something new. The hair style does not really involve much ceremonies as it is often done in other hair styles you could weave your hair by yourself in braids and you could also weave your weav-ons too in braids depending on the kind of weav-on you are carrying at that point in time. Also, braiding with our natural hair looks just perfect, simple and outstanding because it brings out the beauty in the wearer and also makes you unique.

  • ‘Nigerians should embrace alternative building methods’

‘Nigerians should embrace alternative building methods’

Otunba Dele Ajayi Smith is Chairman/Chief Executive, Hammersmith Projects Solutions Limited. Smith, who is a member, Membership Committee of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, believes that accommodation should be the least of the problems of Nigerians. In this interview with Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf, he talks about alternative building methods and how to avert building hazards in Nigeria

It is very difficult for an average Nigerian to build a house because of the continuous rise in the price of building materials, especially cement, in fact government has asked Nigerians to look for alternative ways of building houses. What is the way out?

I think Nigerians should deemphasise the use of cement. I would suggest what is called monolithic dome housing. For centuries, Nigerians know one simple housing system, the one made of cement, sand and stones; the nearest alternative are the burnt bricks used in the same conventional four square style. Monolithic dome housing is unique in several senses; dome is a house that has several features, a house that can survive most natural and manmade disasters: tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, fires bullets, rot, mold and termites. Of course you will likely argue that we do not have most of those natural disasters in our country, that we do not have hurricanes, that we do not have incidences of earthquakes, of course we do have powerful flooding, violent storms and winds and, we do constantly have incidences of those manmade disasters, we do have great insecurity which could lead to severe stray bullets and so many other related negative occurrences.

This new technology stands against all these natural and manmade disasters, it is a unique housing system; it is the safest house in the world. Monolithic Dome is so beautiful; it can be decorated from both inside and outside. It is really fantastic, so when I saw this building personally and slept inside it for days, I was very excited, I appreciated it because I have been involved in the industrial insulation technology for many years, for over three decades, so when I saw the Dome House, it was very attractive because it is a combination of industrial insulation and also the features of conventional building technology I am used to. So putting these two technologies together, we were sure it is going to be something absolutely NEW! For our climate also and, the fact of the growing climate change and its consequences, especially, it is more serious with us in Africa because we do not have solid safety-net against disasters.

The beauty of a Dome House is that when you build the usual conventional house here. You are only thinking about this house lasting some decades, in the case of Monolithic Dome, you must be thinking of several centuries. Take for instance that the Rome’s Pantheon Dome built in 126 A. D. is still there in use and remains strong. So many Dome houses that I personally visited in the US are all looking good as new even though some are 30 years old, you won’t see any sign of stress on any of the Dome houses, but most houses that are conventional, the maintenance costs are even so high to keep them strong or else dilapidation sets in.

The cost of a Dome House is about the same cost with that of our known conventional buildings and for our Ecoshell Dome, it could be 10 to 25 percent cheaper than the cost of conventional building and by the time you put all other things into consideration; the period of construction which is faster with the Dome House and, then with the fact that maintenance cost is almost 50 per cent cheaper after the construction, especially when you consider energy savings.

When you talk about dome, what readily comes to mind is something ancient, how relevant is it for the modern day?

No, the kind of dome we are talking about comes in different shapes and forms of designs, they are beautiful than the old mud dome you use to see in the northern part of Nigeria. I am talking about modern day Domes; they are classical and beautiful, more than any conventional buildings both internally and externally. They are really beautiful and, when you consider some of the areas our people sink their hard-earned hundreds of millions of naira in constructing their homes like all the Lekki axis, the best form of building structures that will not make them lose their investment or their sleeps are the Dome houses and, Dome house can go up to 25 storeys or levels so that there is nothing you need you don’t get from a Dome building. We have all forms of designs you can build a beautiful bungalow, single or two storey building, you can build multiple storey building, up to 25- storey building, it is a building for all seasons.

Take a look at those conventional buildings along Ahmadu Bello Way on Victoria Island in Lagos directly facing the Atlantic ocean, almost all the tenants have run away several years back, they can’t live there any longer and those are huge investments, if they were Dome structures, they will have no problems, they will remain there, they will remain good neigbbours to the Atlantic ocean, nothing to drive them away from that neighbourhood.

When you now look at those structures you have along Lekki Phase I, Phase II, and all those other estates directly behind the Atlantic Ocean, their best built are the Dome houses because they will have no problems at all times. When you think places like Abuja, of course, they are on solid ground, but the growing climate change doesn’t promise anyone anywhere of a sure safety or good tidings, anything could happen at any time.

If you know the psyche of Nigerians, anytime they want to do something, they think about the cost implication, how affordable is this to an average Nigerian?

It is very affordable. It is cheaper for the low income-earner to maintain than maintaining the old conventional house. That is why you see many of our houses; they get easily deteriorated because of what it must cost to maintain them. The only disadvantage that the Monolithic Dome will have on the low income-earners is that of raising their sense of beauty, consciousness and good standard of living.

If you look at most of our universities, most of them are not residential, how useful can this monolithic houses help in accommodating the students?

You’re very right, take for instance, Olabisi Onabanjo University, (OOU) is a 30-year-old institution and they don’t have hostel for their students, they have population of over 14,000 students new students of about 6,000 enter into the university every year and they have to scramble for local accommodation all around those cities within the proximity of the institution, some of these students have to live several miles away from their campuses, yet they don’t have comfortable places to live, coupled with incompatible culture with the local people which often leads to chaos. We have just introduced Echoshell Dome to the university. Dome will prevent man-made disaster that often occurs where a multitude lives. We have introduced the alternative building technology to the university and, the institution is very excited and wishes to be the first university to adopt the alternative building technology.

If you recall, early this year, the federal government beginning to advocate for alternative building technology, the president specifically mentioned it, some of the state governors also talked about huge cost of building a house. Cement is expensive, but the truth is that cement accounts for less than 15 per cent of all the building materials. Cement is not really the major cost in a building process, you are going to talk about planks to do so many things in a structure.

When you see various designs of Dome houses, you will see that they are better than conventional homes, they are more easily decorated, when you see many of these designs you will be so happy, you can tailor your decoration so well that you do it at a very lowest cost.

Apart from housing sector, the Domes are best for banking hall, especially these days with security challenges, Domes are so appropriate for banking hall all over the country especially when you consider the bullet proof feature, the safety of numbers of customers usually within the banking hall, etc.

  • STAND OUT IN JEGGINGS

    STAND OUT IN JEGGINGS

GLAMOUR is what makes a man ask for your telephone number. It is also what makes a woman ask for the name of your dressmaker. What makes you stand out in a crowd is definitely not what you’ve spent on your dress, but how you have decided to style it and how you have decided to wear it. Now leggings and jeggings are in vogue. They have won the hearts of many ladies. Many ladies feel comfortable when in leggings because they are more pleasant and full of comfort unlike jeans which have a hard texture. Anything goes with jeggings when you talk of shirts and tops.

Man presents 8.5 km road as birthday gift to Enugu community

It was an event full of pomp and ceremony as 52-year-old Chris Baywood Ibe performed the contract award ceremony and flagging off of the construction /asphalting of 8.5km Agbogugu Isuawaa-Ihe /Agbudu Road In Agwu LGA of Enugu State. He is singlehandedly building the neglected road for his community.

During the event which took place at his home town, Isu-Awaa, Ibe, an Europe-trained quantity surveyor, told the numerous guests that it was an honour and privilege for him to construct the road. He noted that the road, when completed, would be of immense benefit to the people.

His words: “My family and I have for some time now taken over the maintenance of this road, which we believe is important in turning Isu-Awaa Kingdom into a tourist destination, which would have positive impact on our local economy and on the standard of living of our people. It will no doubt act as an infrastructural catalyst to improve the quality of life of our people and neigbours”.

Ibe further stated that entreaties made to the government for the construction of the road had repeatedly failed, which was why he decided to take up the challenge, even though he considered the project a partnership deal with the Enugu State government. He further assured that the said road would be completed in 120 days, urging the community members to join in the overall supervision and see the road as a gift from him on his birthday.

On his part the President of Isu-Awaa Town Union, Mr. Godwin Ude, decried lack of government’s presence on the roads in the past, even as he openly appreciated the gesture of the celebrant on behalf of the town union.

Ude said the celebrant and his family members had not only impacted positively on the lives of the people, he also made a remarkable example of what a true son of the soil should be. He advised parents to inculcate in their children the spirit of selfless.

The traditional ruler of Isu-Awaa, HRH Igwe Udemgaba Maduka, eulogised the celebrant, calling him a large man with a large heart. He noted that Baywood’s efforts would complement the developmental efforts of the government for his people.

The Anglican Bishop of Agwu /Aninri, Rt. Rev. Dr. Ugwu, who was present at the occasion, described the celebrant as magnanimous, kind-hearted and illustrious. He urged other capable people to emulate him.

Ibe , the proprietor of Baywood Oil and Gas Skill Service, who many invitees regard as a good manager of men and resources, afterwards signed the contracts and flagged off the road construction amidst fanfare.

The event recorded the presence of many dignitaries, among whom were Senator Ike Ekweremmadu, represented by his special adviser on project, Engr. Bethel Onyenyiri, and many other influential personalities.

  • The mistress (1)

They say that a mother is often her daughter’s best friend, confidant and the only one you can trust in this world. Well, for me that saying did not apply because I saw my mother more of an enemy than a friend. As a teenager in secondary school, I would often sneer at her words of advice and wisdom she gave me concerning life, especially men and how to cope with them.

“This woman and her ‘talk’; she won’t just let me rest!” I would often say to my friends at school and we would laugh.

You see, my mother was the strict type. She was always restricting my movements and never allowed me to stay out late. I used to envy Diane, my best friend whose parents gave her more freedom. At 15, Diane already had a boyfriend and her mother even permitted her to be sleeping over at his house. I often wished I had a liberal mother like Diane’s- I thought she was cool and my own mother old-fashioned, someone that belonged to ancient times.

I was young and headstrong then, not realizing that whatever my mother was doing was for my own good. I’m only realizing that now, many years later, after so much has happened in my life, things that should not have occurred if only I had paid attention to my mother’s advice.

Anyway, here I am in a situation I’m stuck in, with no hope for a solution. How did I get to this state? Well, it’s a long story…

    ****

I should start my story by introducing myself. My name is Nicole and until, my marriage I used to work as a nurse in a top private hospital. Infact, I met Frank, my husband at work. He had fallen ill late one night and had been rushed to the hospital. I was on night duty then. After the doctor had attended to him, the matron had assigned me and a colleague to take good care of him as he was a ‘very important patient.’ I did not know why he should merit special treatment- it was later I found out he was a close relative of a governor in one of the states in the country.

Anyway, I did my best for the patient- maybe too much. For after he recovered and was discharged, he returned some days later to the hospital, to express gratitude to the staff for their care of him.

He told us that while he was still on admission, arrangements were being made by his family to fly him abroad. “But I told them, you guys were doing a good job and I was getting good treatment here,” he stated. Before leaving, he gave us some money and also took my number and that of Anna, my colleague.

Some weeks later, he called me. I was at home resting as it was my day off.

“How’s your health now?” I asked politely after the pleasantries. He was doing quite well, he said and had even resumed work.

“I will be traveling to the States next week. Was wondering if I could get you something. What will you like?” he asked.

I told him he could get me anything nice; we chatted for a while then hung up. A day before his trip, we spoke again and throughout the two weeks he was abroad. It was obvious he was interested in me. I didn’t turn him down when he eventually told me he wanted to date me. I knew he was married with a daughter but I just could not resist him. Besides being good-looking, he was very rich, from a good background and well-connected. I guess I was flattered by his attentions too. What average girl today wouldn’t be?

Anyway, I started seeing Frank and it was a new beginning for me. I enjoyed being with him so much and all the good things he did for me that I dumped Gabe, my boyfriend of three years. He was very upset about it and even reported me to my mother.

Of course, my Mum was not happy when she found out who my new boyfriend was.

“Oma,” she started, calling me by my native name. “How could you? How can you been dating a married man? If what Gabe has just told me is true, you must stop this relationship at once! I did not bring you up to be wayward! This must stop. Now!” she said furiously.

Of course, I ignored her words. I was far too gone in my relationship with Frank to end it. So, I told my mother that at 24, I was old enough to know what I wanted and it was Frank I wanted to be with.

“Can you just hear yourself? You want to be with a married man? Of what good is that? Do you want to be a home wrecker? You better mend your ways because this path you have chosen will lead you no where! Mark my words! Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” she screamed at me.

That day, I angrily stormed out of the house. ‘Spoilsport,’ I thought, believing that my mother did not want me to be happy and was only out to ruin my relationship with ‘the love of my life,’ Frank

    Meeting madam

Anyway, I continued to see Frank. As our relationship waxed stronger, so did my mother’s opposition to it. My father, who was retired after many years of working as a teacher was pragmatic about the matter.

“Let her see whoever she wants to. She has to get married one day. Or you want her to stay here and get old in my house?” he asked my mother who angrily turned on him stating:

“Is that all you can say about this issue? Your daughter is running around town with a married man and you don’t see anything wrong with it? Now I know where she got this behaviour from- it must be from your side of the family because we don’t have wayward people in my family!”

It wasn’t just my parents who were divided over my relationship with Frank. My siblings too were split along those against and those in support. I was the last born in a family of six- three girls and two boys and you can say I was spoilt being the last. At least, that’s what my mother always used to say.

Whatever my family felt about Frank, I didn’t care. I was having fun with him and that’s what mattered. We had been seeing each other for nearly ten months when I came face to face with his wife. It happened one day when I had paid a visit to my sweetheart in his office. As usual, he was happy to see me.

“You are looking very sweet today,” he said, beckoning on me to come and sit on his lap.

I moved over, sat down and he kissed me. We were sitting that way, just gisting and laughing when the door to his large office opened and a woman entered.

It was my lover’s wife. I recognised her from a photo of hers I had seen in a magazine once.

A shocked look came over her face when she saw Frank and I. Coming closer, she stated furiously:

    “Frank, what’s going on here?”

Looking at her from head to toe, an angry look on his face, he retorted:

“And you, what are you doing here? Did I send for you? You better go back home and mind your business and stop disturbing me! Busybody woman!”

I tried getting up from Frank’s lap but he held me down. So, I sat still, my heart beating fast, expecting the irate woman to pounce on me any minute…

  • Businessman rescues abandoned roads in Anambra community

Businessman rescues abandoned roads in Anambra community

Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area was at the verge of collapse after it was repeatedly ravaged by erosion. Many communities in the area had been cut off from their neighbours as a result of the bad conditions of the roads, including the one that leads to the palace of the traditional ruler of the area, Igwe Nelson Okoye.

In fact, there were fears of poor turn out by guests when preparations were being made for the final burial rites of the monarch in December, 2012 because of the damage erosion had inflicted on the roads. The monarch had died shortly after the communal war between two neighbouring communities in the area, Umuleri and Aguleri, in 2001. The fratricidal war claimed many lives and destroyed property worth billions of naira.

But while a process was initiated for the rebuilding of the affected communities, the most serious crisis, according to 66-year-old Daniel Onuigbo, was the erosion problem that had persisted in the area. Some of the roads in the community had collapsed for more than 20 years without any help from any quarters. Consequently, they were abandoned by motorists, cyclists and even pedestrians.

An indigene of the community, according to the 76-year-old widow of the monarch, Florence Okoye, came to the rescue of the community, but she said that residents were still clamouring for the attention of the government. Areas like Gabriel Road, Shell Road and Nenyi are all ravaged by erosion.

Recalling the efforts that were made by her husband to draw the attention of the government to the conditions of the roads, Madam Okoye said: “There was nothing my late husband did not do to get the government to work on these roads, but all his efforts failed because it was at the time that anger pervaded the land because of war. Since then, some of the roads were abandoned until they were overgrown with weeds and we lived like refugees.

“But today, God has touched one of our sons to remember his people. His name is Benneth Emeka. He lives in Port Harcourt. We have nothing to give him, only God can reward him. At least my late husband will now rest in peace.”

Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that about three of the roads had been reconstructed by the said Benneth Emeka, the chief executive of New Idea, a construction firm based in Rivers, Abia and Imo states.

He has finished the earth work on the three-kilometre road popularly called ‘Ring Road’ in the area, while Igwe Okoye Road, measuring about 350 metres, had been completed and tarred. Anambra governor, Mr. Peter Obi, is being expected to commission the road.

For 64-year-old Samuel Emeka, it has been a long journey for the people of Umueri community, as most of the roads are not motorable. He said: “We thank God that the young man (Emeka) has decided that our community will look like others by giving us roads.

Emeka, however, appealed to the government to tar the Ring Road whose earth work he had completed. He said: “I have done the earth work. I am appealing to our governor to come to our aid, especially on the Ring Road, by tarring it. Erosion has been the major source of worry in this area and I am constructing the roads because of the love I have for my people. We cannot wait for government to do everything for us. Before now, they were impassable, but we thank God for everything.”

  • Marriage: A garden of treasures

    Dear Reader,

Marriage is a garden planted by God, a garden of teaching, learning, understanding, accommodating and appreciating. What does Marriage mean to you? Is it a blessing or a ‘necessary evil’, as many would say? Is it a bed of roses or one that is full of thorns and thistles? Is it a help to you or an everyday hurt that you are trying by all means to avoid?

I have good news for you. This month, I shall be showing you the true blessings of marriage. As you apply the truth in your own marriage, you will begin to enjoy the same blessings in Jesus’ name.

Marriage is a unique relationship ordained of God, for a man and a woman to give and receive satisfaction of their healthy needs and desires. It is the oldest institution in the world, having its root in divinity. God, Himself instituted it. This is clearly seen as written in Genesis 2:22, which says: …The Lord God… made … a woman, and brought her unto the man. It is not the culture of any country of the world. It is heaven’s culture. Marriage can be likened to a garden. When God conducted the first wedding, He placed the couples (Adam and Eve) in the true environment for marriage – “the Garden of Eden.”

The dictionary meaning of a garden is a piece of ground used for growing flowers, fruits, vegetables and other plants. Marriage is a garden planted by God Himself. God’s Word in Genesis 2:8-16 says: … The Lord God planted a garden… God was and is still the Great Planter of the marriage garden. His design is always the best. When you accept His design, the best of your marriage will come out for you. Like every normal garden, there are several efforts and care applied, in order for the health and beauty given to it to yield its best, as God designed it to be for you.

Marriage is not just an ordinary garden, but a garden full of treasures. These treasures are there, just waiting to be dug out. However, digging is a gradual process that requires patience, labour, diligence, wisdom and determination from you. I am a living witness to the fact that marriage is a garden full of treasures.

By the grace of God, I have been digging out some of the treasures in it and I tell you, they are profitable. God is no respecter of persons. The same Lord is rich unto all. You, too, can start digging out the treasures and make use of them to the glory of God.

Let us examine some of the treasures in the marriage garden.

    TREES

Genesis 2:9 says: Out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food… In the natural, trees have many uses, and they can also be reproduced into many things. Trees make for beauty, hence the statement “…every tree that is pleasant to the sight…” Trees give shade from the heat of the sun and are sometimes used to ward off erosion. They can be used to drain excess water from swamps that may breed infectious insects and other health hazards. Likewise, marriage is meant for beauty. It is meant to check the excesses of life providing security and comfort from the usual stress of life. When you act in conscious obedience to the Word of God concerning marriage, you will begin to enjoy the blessings of marriage.

Trees produce edible fruits that are good for food as written in Genesis 2:9: Out of the ground made the lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food…. What food does in the natural world, is to quench hunger and leave you satisfied. Also, marriage is meant to give you satisfaction in life. Lack of satisfaction and continuous hunger, is what has pushed many married men and women outside the home to commit adultery.

Here is a testimony that will build your faith up: “I used to worship in a place where I was made to believe that misunderstanding brings about understanding. I was even asked if I had any serious quarrel with my wife and I said, ‘no.’ I was made to believe that quarrelling and fighting were parts of marriage. I believed this and we started having problems at home. With Word of God that we have heard, read and put into practice along with the right spiritual food that we have received from this place, my marriage, to the glory of God, has been healed from every misunderstanding.” Yours can experience the same in the name of Jesus.

Since God created the marriage garden, He alone has all that can make it work. For you to have a better access to God’s help, you need to accept His Son Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. If you will like to accept Jesus Christ, please, say this prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your blood. Deliver me from sin and satan, to serve the living God. I believe You died for me and on the third day, You rose that I might be justified. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom”.
