  • NTDC boss applauds minister over visas

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Olugbenga Ashiru, has been commended for his recent directive asking Nigerian missions abroad to ensure that the issuance of visas does not last more than 48 hours.

At the forefront of the commendation is the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, who said in a statement in Abuja that the directive was most timely as it conformed with the president’s transformation agenda on tourism.

According to Otunba Runsewe, prompt issuance of visas to tourists and investors alike was overdue in view of the desire of tourists to visit Nigeria as their preferred destination and in conformity with the President Goodluck Jonathan on transformation of tourism as a major revenue earner for the country.

He said the usual delays being experienced in some of our missions abroad would now become a thing of the past as consular service delay had always been the usual complaints of some visitors wishing to come to Nigeria.

“This directive will surely help increase the tourist traffic into Nigeria as complaints have always been in this regards,” Otunba Runsewe said.

The minister had said during the signing of “performance” contract with heads of Nigerian missions in the United States at the Nigerian House in New York that the era of visa delay to visitors and investors, among others, to Nigeria was over.

According to the minister, “heads of missions are to hold their individual officers accountable for the delivery of agreed outcome such as the number and timeliness of visas and passports issued, the periodicity and quality of reports that are rendered among other deliverables”.

In a related development, the NTDC boss has also commended the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom for promptly issuing a travel document to a staff of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation whose passport was lost while entering the United Kingdom recently.

  • My cousin has crush on a guy and she doesn’t know how to let him know

Hi, I have a cousin who is 18 and has crush on a guy. She needs me to advise her on how to get this guy and how to know if the guy has a crush on her. She’s 18 too.

Hi. Are you sure you’re not the same person acting as your cousin? Whatever the case, be careful when making it known to a guy that you like him. Most guys, rather than take it as a compliment that a woman finds them attractive, laugh with friend behind her back and take it that she’s free or cheap. If you’re both 18, and the guy is around that age, it may not be productive giving such a young guy the come-on lights. Older guys are able to handle flirting and ‘toasting’ well. Since you asked for it, I will give you a few tips to show a guy you like him but be warned that you can’t flirt with someone unless they’re flirting back with you:

1 Smile happily while talking to him or waving out to him. And giggle now and then coyly at his jokes.

2 Stare deeply like you want him while talking to him. And glance at him now and then when he’s not close, but look away when he looks at you. It’s all about making him curious.

3 Whisper in his ear like you have a secret to tell him when both of you are alone in a crowded place. Just make sure your lips accidentally touch his ears.

4 Lean on him with an excuse while talking to him by adjusting your heel, or losing your balance, or while walking through a crowd.

5 Flick your hair to the other side slowly with one hand while talking to him. Guys are suckers for this move.

6 Act cute when you talk to him. Keep your finger on your lip while thinking, or blush now and then.

7 Compliment him and speak highly about anything he does. He’ll love spending time with you. And make sure you ask for his help now and then, he’ll feel more manly around you.

  • Nigeria shines at World Travel Market

Nigeria shines at World Travel Market

Annually, the world gathers in Custom House, ExCel, London for the  biggest travel and tourism event, the World Travel Market (WTM). It has in attendance more than 180 countries.

Almost 48,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international journalists attend the event in London to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinion. The WTM, now in its 33rd year, is the event where the travel industry conducts and concludes its deals.

The fair in 2011 generated £1,653 million of travel industry contracts. Countries, airlines, international hospitality chains, IT solution providers in the tourism industry, resorts, top travel agencies, tour operators all come together under one roof to do business.  That is why it is catastrophic for any country interested in its tourism growth to miss this annual event.

For a country like Nigeria seeking to create an identity for itself and build its profile as an emerging destination, the need to put up a very strong presence and also articulate and market its products was imperative.

Slowly over the last few years, due to Nigeria’s strong presence and visibility in WTM and some other key travel fairs, the travel world is now conscious of the country as an emerging destination in Africa and is also taking a look at some of the things that are making Nigeria tick. The African Section of the fair came to a standstill as people trooped  to listen to Nigerian music, watch dancers and have a thirst of the nation’s cuisines. They had it so good that most refused to go and had to when the music stopped.

The high point of this year’s event was the Nigeria Day.

The Nigerian tourism drive  was given a boost by the 2012 Industry Report  of the WTM  which in addition to steady progress the country is making stated that: “The Nigerian film industry dubbed Nollywood has made the country the highlight of the African tourist industry with Africans making use of the increase no-frills airline routes to visit the country made famous in the movies.”

However, it must be added here that one of the strong areas for inbound tourists to Nigeria is religious tourism. The annual convention of the Living Faith Church Worldwide (Winners’ Chapel), the Redeemed Christian Church of God Holy Ghost convention and Pastor T.B. Joshua’s  Synagogue Church of All Nations are all building the market for pilgrimage and religious tourism.

The Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) boss, Otunba Segun Runsewe, assessed the impact of Nigeria at the this year WTM: “ Nigeria had its bold and imposing  stand at the African section of the market, showing remarkable improvement in not articulating its presence in the market, but being able to create a platform for states and  private sector operators to showcase what Nigeria has to offer in tourism.

“While the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) co-coordinated the Nigeria ’s participation,  key private sector operators in the tourism industry had the opportunity to market and network with their counterparts from all over the world. It was an encouraging participation by the Nigerian private sector practitioners.

“States like Cross River State , Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had a strong presence. The umbrella tourism  body for Nigeria, the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), led by its President, Chief Samuel Alabi, led the private sector operators, including the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), National Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), Arik Airline,  Remlord Group, Naija Seven Wonders, Eko Hotel and Suites, Tarzan Balogun Marine Services Limited and many others. “In the 2012 World Travel market, we have seen that more countries are coming to the WTM and with the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) also opening their windows and bringing in their members, we have seen that it is an opportunity to bring a very strong inbound tourists traffic to Nigeria . So, we are using the opportunity to showcase the strength of Nigeria basically in terms of our history  which is also part of the history of the African-Americans. We are also looking at our craft, festival, waterfalls, rocks and so on. So for us, it is an opportunity to invite more foreigners to Nigeria to come and see for themselves.

“The most recent thing that happened was the Americans that we invited to Nigeria who were pleasantly surprised.  They were surprised by the number of tourism opportunities and tourist destinations we have in Nigeria . So, we want to use the opportunity of the WTM to reassure every tourist coming to Nigeria of their safety and security. Let me use this opportunity to also explain one very important issue. There is no country in the world that has total security. We would have some challenges. What is more important is how to overcome them. That is what we are working on. So, the World Travel Market is a total opportunity for us to showcase our strength as a people and invite more inbound tourists to Nigeria, considering the fact that two major factors are not a problem in Nigeria, in fact three, one language, two accommodation, all the major hotels in the world now have facilities in Nigeria, all the major airlines in the world fly to Nigeria. So, the language, accommodation and transportation are not problems. We have also created an advantage to make Nigeria a preferred destination.”

The NTDC boss explained that every country in the world has its challenges, especially in the area of security, but the most important thing is the efforts the country is making to combat it and also ensuring the safety of tourists that visit the country.

Commenting on the WTM Global Trends report, Runswe said: “The report we are getting from the WTM is the sixth in the world in the recent past. That means Nigeria is making major impact in terms of tourism development. I want to be very grateful to the organizers for bringing out the real fact that Nigeria has made concerted efforts and still making until tourism becomes a major income earner for the country.”

  • Ladies don’t feel secure when they are with me; what could be the problem?

Sister Adeola good morning, my name is Damilola my problem is that I noticed ladies do not feel secure when they are with me, please what could be the problem.

Dear Damillola, if you follow the tips below, they may help you solve your problem:

•Be yourself and act natural. No one likes a fake, so just be yourself. People will admire that you aren’t afraid of what others think. Don’t be different on purpose though; this will just make you seem weird.

•Sincerely praise others. Don’t use flattery, but genuinely give credit where credit is due.

•Avoid making fun of others. Avoid insulting other people unless you’re just messing around. Don’t say anything hurtful. Be really careful with this. The longer you’ve known a person, the more you can mess around with him or her.

•Make fun of yourself. You know yourself better than pretty much anyone else, so it’s easiest to make jokes about you. Everyone likes someone who’s humble.

•Confidence is important. Try sticking to your principles and don’t say the opposite a few moments later. That just makes you look like you are desperately trying to find something smart to say (Think about what you are going to say).

•Think about what you are going to say before saying it. Consider what people’s reactions will probably be, and decide if what you are about to say is worth being spoken.

•Minimize others’ mistakes Do not correct other people, unless their mistake will end up making things worse for them or someone else. Also, downplay it if others point it out.

•Be inclusive. Don’t use an inside joke unless everyone present knows it. Also, don’t refer to something about which a person in the conversation doesn’t know without explaining it to him or her.

•Be bold! Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself! Being open is important in making people relax.[[Image:Free Silly Sisters Making Faces Creative.

    •Have GOOD hygiene.

•Remember the types of things the people who you are around like, then you can talk about things you all like, and everyone will be laughing with you and smiling soon!

  • Visa partners South Africa to promote tourism

New alliance aims to strengthen global tourism interest in South Africa and its many wonders

Visa and South African Tourism (SA Tourism) have signed an agreement that will see the two organisations working closely together to promote the country’s tourist attractions to an international audience.

The ‘South Africa and Visa Welcomes You’ campaign will look to amplify SA Tourism’s existing efforts to promote South Africa as a travel destination for tourists – and promote the use of Visa cards by visitors.

Mandy Lamb, Country Manager for Visa in South Africa, said the agreement was a “natural progression” in the company’s existing role in the global tourism industry.

“South Africa remains a firm favourite among tourists from various parts of the world because of the country’s diverse tourist attractions. As a major contributor to South Africa’s GPD, the tourism sector is key to unlocking economic growth and our aim is to put efforts behind articulating South Africa’s advanced electronic payment network, which supports payments by Visa cards,” Lamb said.

  • When did we become a nation of such unhappy people?(2)

Continued from last week In recent times, though, the

characteristic optimism and unbreakable spirit we are known for, seem to be waning. Hope that e go better, keep fading everyday. And the reasons for the demise of optimism, are glaring for everyone to see. Back in 1999, hope was reborn in the country after the military made a hasty retreat from politics and governance, something they had no business being involved with in the first place. The belief back then, was that after the trials and trauma the country went through under military rule, that at last, a new dawn, an era of good governance that will usher in peace, prosperity and security for the nation’s teeming millions, has come.

After thirteen straight years of democratic rule, there’s no hint that we are on the right track. In fact, the suspicion among a large section of the populace is that we are not on any track at all – that we are like a derailed train that has gone off track and is careering blindly towards disaster. Just as such a train has no control, so has the country become. And if you are a citizen living in such a country, will you be going about smiling and looking happy? No way! Now you understand the reason for the misery and unhappiness in the land.

So much has gone horribly wrong with our country that it will take more than a miracle to sort things out. How do you straighten out a country that has been nearly ruined by so much corruption and the reckless plundering of its God-given resources, the likes of which the world has not seen in a long time? And how such plundering has led to the pauperisation of a large section of the populace (over 70 percent by World Bank estimates).

With such a huge number of people living in penury and feeling like outcasts in their own fatherland, we don’t need a soothsayer to tell us that there’s trouble ahead. Because a country that stands by and watches its people suffer is in serious trouble. No amount of rhetorics by those in charge of the nation’s affairs will avert this looming disaster. The only remedy is concrete action and this can only come about when politicians and others in positions that take decisions that affect the nation, put the PEOPLE first, before politics and private interest. Sounds like a tall order. But it’s been done in other countries so why can’t we do the same here?

It’s only when that is done that developing the country becomes easy. And such challenges that look insurmountable today such as regular power supply, good, motorable roads, quality health care, good schools and other social amenities the citizens can enjoy, will become readily available. Nigerians are very easy people to please. They are not asking for the moon. Just give them the basics that will enable them live decent lives and they will sing your praises for ever. Nearly six decades after the late Premier of Western Nigeria, Chief Obafemi Awolowo introduced free education in the Western Region, he is still been praised today for his vision. That the West is the most sophisticated and educationally advanced region in the country is largely due to that singular act of a man who could see tomorrow.

My fervent wish is that we will have more leaders like him with an eye on tomorrow, the future and not those who only think of what they can gain today. They might have acquired all the wealth in the world but what legacies will they leave behind? None.

Perhaps when more men and women of vision in Awo’s ilk, emerge, then Nigerians might smile again. And who knows, regain their lost position as the happiest country in the world.

  • I’m ready to die for SEC– Oteh

I’m ready to die for SEC– Oteh

Ms. Arunma Oteh, Director General, Security and Exchange Commission, (SEC) who has been in the news over her leadership style was an award recipient in Anambra State recently. In this interview with Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, she speaks on development at the stock market and other sundry issues

Your award as the most historic woman of the year 2012 is coming at a time when you are receiving lots of attacks

I have received a lot of attack recently, but when I got the letter that the Anambra State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists wanted to honour me as the most historic woman of the year, I almost shed tears. This is because despite what people are doing to bring you down, there are people somewhere who are appreciative of the good work we do.

I am not afraid to say that I will always do the right thing as the Director-General of the Security and Exchange Commission. I am not moved by what people are doing trying to pull me down, so long as I know that I am doing the right thing. In the past, we had a capital market where people wear suits and sit down to steal money belonging to peasants, but when I came in I told myself that all these have got to stop. We must sanitise our capital market and build a trust that will let the poor man put his savings in it and be assured that it will not be stolen by people. What I am doing at the SEC, I am ready to die for. I’m not afraid to die so long as I am doing the right thing, and I’m very emboldened by the fact that people are watching, no matter the level of conspiracy against one, people are seeing your efforts and at the right time, one will be rewarded for every good work.

How best could you describe events happening at the SEC?

A lot is happening and we are trying to grow people’s investment, not by our words but by our actions, and today we have a market that is a world class market. That is why today our equities market, on daily basis, is flocked by values from international investors, which make up 80 percent.

We Nigerians must enjoy the fruit of our hard work, if market prices are low today, and we have some money to save, we should try and put that money in the market so that it will grow your finances and you will have more money.

Are there differences between the capital market you met and the capital market we have today?

We always say at the SEC that, let us learn from the horrible things that happened in the past; our people suffered in the past because there was a lot of misrepresentation.

Even up to 2010 it was still happening. People were told that their money will just double, and many of our people are crying because they sold their houses, they took their life savings and put them there. That is not what we are saying today. We are saying if you want to invest, you must ask questions. It is not enough for us to just tell the people that once you put your money, it will double. Ask questions, if you are told it is Lever Brothers or Nestle, you will know they have a distribution network everywhere and you will make enquiries to know about the market price.

And you must go to meet financial experts and ask them questions before you invest. It is your right to ask questions, but please don’t wait for people to come from other countries and invest today and when you are ready to invest, it would be that prices have gone to the top. Last year when we went to Rivers State, the deputy governor there told us a story. He said his father told him that if you have N10,000 and you cannot save, when you earn N100million you will still not be able to save.

What that means is that you do not have to wait until you have all the money before you begin to save money.

How much have you done to spread the gospel of savings to Nigerians?

Here at SEC, we value journalists a lot. I cannot talk enough about the importance of saving and investing, but those of you who write, who present programmes on TV and on radio probably do more in sending the message about saving and investing, about borrowing long term, listing your companies on the Nigeria Stock market.

For us it is very important that we partner with journalists. One of the new initiatives we have for journalists is that we will have a Journalists Academy this year.

This is because we feel that the more that you are familiar with the Nigerian capital market, the more that you can report back, so when we publicise about the Journalists Academy through the Anambra Council, we encourage journalists in Anambra to apply in your numbers. I think it is on 10th of December that we are going to have the Journalists Academy, but most importantly, next week, we will be publishing a new initiative which we call the SEC award for Journalists, it is an essay competition on the Nigerian capital market, and I encourage you to try and participate in this essay in your numbers.

Saving and investing is very critical to building a nation, and no nation can develop without a strong capital market, if you want medium to long-term money for businesses, it comes from the capital market. One, it creates wealth and helps you to train up your children, so that you can retire and still live well. Everything that is negative in the economy affects the capital market because capital market is about the state of the economy.

What effect do you think that the flood this year will have on the economy?

I feel that Nigeria as led by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a number of very senior private and public sector officials who have been constituted to scout for money to help these people, will do a good work and help save whatever negative impact it may have on the economy. We have Nigerians who have lost their homes and means of livelihood because of the flood, but I know that efforts are in place to see how they can be rehabilitated. This also has to do with agriculture in the country as most farmlands have been submerged and we are hopeful that the federal government will support agriculture. As you know, the federal government is very supportive of agriculture, as agriculture provides 42 percent of our GDP and also 70 percent of employment and, therefore, when something like flood happens, it is important that urgent steps be taken.

Most companies especially in the South East do not get quoted on the stock market, what is the reason for this?

Traditionally, Igbos are known for investing in their children, in real estate and in growing their businesses. I think there are areas where we can learn and do better. We must know that if we must only control our businesses, we will not grow as fast as we hope. We have a town like Nnewi that has some of the greatest businesses in Nigeria, and some of those businesses need to be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, so that they can be like Honeywell, Dangote and the rest. We need to encourage our businessmen to move from the culture of controlling their businesses themselves and let others buy into them, so that they can grow. But Igbo people are known for enterprise, but we need to step our games up.

  • ‘I thought I was in a trance when I got the news of my wife’s abduction’

‘I thought I was in a trance when I got the news of my wife’s abduction’

In his office at the Osun State House of Assembly, Osogbo, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salaam, spoke with Assistant Editor, Investigations, JOKE KUJENYA, on the recent abduction and eventual rescue of his wife, Mrs. Muibat Salaam, from her abductors. He also used the period to portray the dangers that families of prominent politicians could be subjected to as well as what the Federal Government could do to curtail the dastardly act.

With your wife’s recent experience in the hands of her abductors, would you say that kidnapping is gaining inroad into the South-West?

Yes, it is. Or how else are we to explain what happened to her and the mother of another honourable of the federal republic? Unfortunately, kidnapping is gaining in-road into our terrain. But I know that they cannot last or withstand our forces in this part of Nigeria. And I repeat that they cannot stand the South-West because most of the people that have been involved in this evil act are not from our end of the country. We all know that they are from elsewhere.

There is no other way to describe it than to say it is a very bad development. And we can quickly curb it by being more security conscious. What happened to me and unfortunately, to the mother of a politician in Ijebu-Ode, from which people feel they can siphon money from us, but God, who is the only One that could really assist us, helped us to thwart their plans. And for this reason, I will use the opportunity to stress that ‘state or communal policing’ is a must for us in this country. It is an idea that must be given a chance and allow to stand.

It is the community people, using the vigilance group who were able to rescue my wife as an instance, who would be able to know when there are strange faces among us. Because they know every nook and cranny of their immediate environments, they would be able to easily note when there are people who have not been part of us. They will be able to take appropriate action, ask the right questions. It is these people that will be able to fully complement the effort of the Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Army and other security agencies like the SSS and others.

In some sections, the scenario was also blamed on the security lapse in the State of Osun…

Well, I don’t agree with that because the security in our state has greatly improved in recent times. The state government has done all within its capacity to beef up the security system. In fact, very recently, this House passed into law a security trust bill which has also received the assent of the executive. What is intended with the bill is to complement the effort of the Federal Government in assisting the Nigeria Police and the rest of the security services in their efforts to ensure that the lives and property of every Nigerian is duly protected from any form of harm. It is intended to ensure that our security personnel are given the necessary equipment to aid their work.

As we speak, we have nothing less than 30 vehicles given out to the state security personnel ad they’ve been plying major routes within the state to ensure the safety of lives and property. It is just that these evil people too understudy any area in which they plan to strike, and when they see that the security personnel have either gone to other places or are yet to get there, they quickly carry out their evil acts. In just a couple of months, what we are fully working on in terms of solid security operations in this state will come into public glare. It will be so tight that no evil planner will be able to escape the hands of our law enforcement agents.

Where were you when the news of your wife’s abduction first got to you?

In fact, on that day, I was on a state assignment. I was about to leave the governor’s office when I first received the call informing me that my wife had just been kidnapped by some men in a car. It was like I was in a trance and I knew I just quietly cut off the phone because it just didn’t hit me as real. In the first five to ten minutes, such a piece of news was unbelievable. I was still in that state when a second call came and the same piece of news was repeated. Quietly, I walked back to the governor who was still on his seat and said: ‘Mr. Governor, I just got calls telling me that some people had kidnapped my wife.’ For few minutes, the governor and I stood speechless.

Even as I stood there in his office, it just did not appear real to me that my wife could have been kidnapped. I know there was no way I could convince you about this; but silence fell on the whole governor’s office. We all just looked with surprise. I believe it took me up to about 30 minutes before I could find my voice to ask: ‘Are they saying kidnap, as in taking her away or what?’ And in asking that question, it was like I woke up from the slumber and then began to ask for details. So, briskly, I walked towards the door and into my car to go and take the necessary steps. As I got into my car, torrents of call began to come in and it was all about the sad news. So, I rushed down straight to Ejigbo, the scene of the incident where she has her shop, to see things for myself. I got there and the pandemonium I met on ground was enough to confirm that it was true.

And even when I got there and heard the conflicting accounts of people, I was trying to tell myself that maybe the people were armed robbers and they wanted to rob her of her money. But as minutes turned into hours and her whereabouts became shoddy, I knew we were in for some big shock. And another shocking impact was that my daughter who was with her in the car had been rushed to the hospital…

Is that the one that was reportedly shot by the hoodlums?

Yes. But she wasn’t shot. What happened was that when her mother left the car and tried to run out of fear, she forgot to turn off the engine of the car. She sustained some injuries in the process. As her mother ran out, she remained in the car, obviously confused. And because the engine was still running and the car had started descending a slope backwards without anyone to control it, the 17-year-old girl decided to jump out of the fast-moving-backward vehicle. They were on a hilly side and if she stayed, you can now imagine the devastation we might be in at this time. But thank God.

So, in order to jump out of the vehicle, she held on to one of the doors. As she jumped still holding the door, the vehicle tilted in the same direction she jumped towards and rolled on her. In fact, it was the quick intervention of the people around who all came together to lift the vehicle off her, if not, I doubt if I would be here talking with you about the whole thing. But the girl was not shot at all because the kidnappers did not even know who she was to my wife at that time. But after spending some days in the hospital, she’s okay now and at home with the mother.

In fact, the residents of Ejigbo, whom I remain grateful to, had moved her to a nearby hospital before I got there. But the Honda Accord car still got spoiled as it rolled off the slope before people could get back to it.

What’s your reaction to allegations that it had a political inclination?

In truth, I don’t agree with that. I don’t even see it from that point of view at all. We have read it in the papers, from the police and all areas that these boys are just after money. And I thank God that they did not get a dime before they were apprehended. And I know we have practised some sort of dirty politics in our country in time past. But as for this, it is just one unfortunate incident that we must all put behind us. My own joy is that my wife and child are safe and at home, and I still disagree with any allegation that it could be politically motivated.

Judging by the location where she was rescued, where do you think she was being taken to?

I doubt if they were to taking her to any other place. I even doubt their story of someone sending them as they told my wife. I believe that they must have used that location for many unfortunate victims like that for long until God decides to deal with them in his own way. To me, it was where they feel comfortable because how could a sane human being drink and eat inside a thick bush like that even for the five days that they were there? It could also be that they chose that place so that in case of sudden need for escape, they might be able to cross to other routes they might know. But to think that they have any backer or taking her to any other place, those hungry thugs with the police have no such luxury near their lives.

With the cases of the Representative’s mother and your wife, would you advocate security cover for families of politicians?

The scenario is becoming dicey. As it is now, I doubt if our families are safe. Or how do you explain if someone says because he needs money, it is by abducting the family member of a politician they could score their point? So, our families are not safe if it could happen to me, my wife, and the aged mother of a representative and even as we read in recent times, the abduction of VCs of some higher institutions. They did not even have respect for the age of the old woman. Can you imagine that?

It thus means that some people feel it is only through politicians that they can make quick money without feeling remorse that they could waste the lives of their victims in the process. But people should not forget that this is the South-West and we are not like the Niger-Delta and that we don’t have money to flaunt around as they think. So, if they come to us believing that they will get money, they will definitely not get anything. However, political office holders have to be more careful and alert.

Would you advocate special security for wives of politicians in particular?

Well, it would be good if this can be done. Just as security is provided for we male politicians, it could also be provided for husbands of female politicians. It is just unfortunate the kind of situation we now find ourselves. If not, we should all be able to walk freely within our country. Since things are beginning to look as if the political office holders are not the targets of these crime-minded people, it will truly be better to have a special security outfit to monitor the safety of our families across the country. And please allow me to use this medium to thank God for the commitment of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State to offer this life-saving service voluntarily. This is something they chose to do without being forced to do it. And they are doing it so well without really expecting to gain anything from anybody. I heartily thank and commend them. My wife too is very grateful to them.

  • How we rescued Osun Speaker’s wife

AC Soji Ganzallo, Head of Department, Public Relations arm of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State, explains the mode of operation of the security group to Assistant Editor, JOKE KUJENYA. He explains how some members of the group stumbled on the abducted wife of the Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, Mrs. Muibat Salaam, where she was kept on Saturday October 13, 2012 before his men secured her release.

Tell us about the Vigilance Service of Ogun State (VSoOS)

We are a security outfit that had been in operation since 1985 as the Vigilante Group of Nigeria until August 2011 when the state government took over. We were then restructured and given due recognition to assist our people by working with existing security authorities to secure their lives and property. We are basically set up to complement the effort of the Nigeria Police within our scope of operation. We are a grassroots security agency with our men spread across the remote communities of the state in order to fish out criminal tendencies, among others, so we can curb them before things get out of hand.

We also have men and women of our group within the towns offering uncompromising security services. And the larger percentage of our officials, both men and women, are indigenes of the areas where they operate in the state so that they will be able to access the locations of crimes without much stress. As a result, we know our people so well and even some of their names and home addresses. This has been helpful to our operations.

They all go to different parts of the state and environs to seek information and then report back to us. They mix with people. But they don’t carry arms about unless we are told that there is a situation somewhere requiring that they do so.

And you cannot easily know them because our investigators don’t wear uniforms. They relate and mingle with people freely. You won’t know that they are gathering information. It is only the regular officers that you would see in uniforms. We operate more like the olden days’ Civil Investigators’ Division (CID). And we are in all the states of the federation.

How did your men come across the Osun State Speaker’s wife?

On that day, our men were on duty in various places. Our men on duty said as they were on patrol, they received a call from another of their colleagues who was not with them at that location. The young man called the vigilance men and told them that his dad, the old man who sighted the woman and the men in the bush, had called him to report that he saw a criminal gang in the bush. So, he swung into action and that was how our men responded and caught up with them.

On that fateful day, the old man, it was said, was on his way to his farm at Ogunmakin area in Ogun State here. But for some reasons, the man decided to pass through another route to his farm. As he was going, he sighted the woman trying to squeeze her wet clothes apparently after she was beaten by rain. Quickly, he placed a call to his son, who happened to be a member of the vigilante group and told him all that he had seen. He even told him that he saw that they were with arms in the bush with a female member.

On hearing that, the boy called the team and our men in turn made a call to our office to request for reinforcement. We immediately instructed them to first of all surround the Ajebo area along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, not far from Abeokuta, with our men who were already on ground so that the criminals would not be able to escape. Then we quickly told the vigilance group on duty in Abeokuta to go and join the men in Ajebo to apprehend the criminals. That was how they pounced on the men and arrested four of them. Three escaped while one of them got killed in the imbroglio.

At what point did you realise that the victim was Osun State Speaker’s wife?

It was during the encounter that the woman was shouting not to be killed that she was not a thief but a victim of kidnapping. Her lamentations then aroused curiousity from our men and they guided her to the roadside where policemen eventually met them and her real identity was disclosed. It was after we had actually got her into safety from the hands of the bandits that we were able to know that she was the wife of the Speaker of the State of Osun.

Again, our men said they had earlier thought she was the female member of the gang and had pointed their gun at her. And you know that there are many criminal gangs with women leaders or members. Her vehement shout saved her. Thereafter, we involved the police as we were duty-bound to do. Later, all of them were taken to the Police Station at Eleweran in Abeokuta here.

From that point, the Oyo State Speaker was told and he informed his Osun counterpart who happened to be the woman’s husband. It was after the preliminary investigation and the handing over of the culprits that the Ogun State Police Commissioner released the woman to the Osun State CP and the Speaker himself also came down to the police station to take his wife back home.

As a way of following-up on the case, we made our presentation to the state police and submitted the files containing all the information we were able to gather on the gang. The four suspects arrested are now with the Osun State Police Command. The command is expected to continue the due process.

Are you hopeful that justice will be done to them?

But one of the problems we often encounter with this kind of case is that they do not confess even to the point of death. However, because these ones were caught with their victim still very much alive, they can be prosecuted without much time being wasted on them.
