  • ‘Vote buying an attack on democracy, people’s dignity’

‘Vote buying an attack on democracy, people’s dignity’

The Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC), a civil society organisation focused on governance, civic participation, human rights, and social development, has called on eligible citizens to shun vote buying and resist attempts by desperate politicians to manipulate the electoral process for selfish gains.

In a statement yesterday, its Executive Director, Ugochi Ehiahuruike, described vote buying as “an attack on democracy and the collective dignity of the people.”

Ehiahuruike urged civil society organisations, community leaders, faith-based groups, and the media to intensify voter education campaigns across the state to curb the menace and reduce voter apathy.

She reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to continuous engagement with communities—particularly young and first-time voters—to promote integrity, transparency, and accountability in elections.

The statement read in part: “It is deeply concerning that cases of vote buying have continued to characterise elections across the country, including the recent by-election conducted in parts of Anambra State.

There was disturbing evidence of widespread financial inducement at polling units. Voters were openly approached with envelopes of cash, food items, and promises of future favours.

These practices not only undermine the credibility of the electoral process but also discourage honest and competent candidates from contesting, knowing they cannot compete with moneybags.

This development is a dangerous trend that cheapens democracy and mortgages the people’s future for temporary gain.”

Ehiahuruike further stated that vote buying has become a tool for desperate politicians—many of whom lack the competence, vision, and integrity required for public office—to buy their way into power.

“When unqualified individuals purchase votes to win elections, governance becomes transactional rather than transformational. Such leaders view public office as an investment to be recouped rather than a platform for service,” she said.

According to her, the monetisation of elections contributes significantly to the unusually high cost of conducting elections in Nigeria, as politicians and political parties pour vast sums into securing votes instead of developing sound policies that address citizens’ needs.

“When elections are dominated by money rather than merit, the outcome is poor governance, unfulfilled promises, and the continuous recycling of mediocrity,” she added.

The SIDEC boss emphasised that vote buying directly undermines citizens’ power to demand accountability and quality leadership.

“In line with the goal of Project IMPACT, it is important to stress that every time citizens sell their votes, they surrender their voice, their right to demand accountability, and the opportunity for good governance.

Vote buying is not only an attack on democracy but also an attack on the collective dignity of our people. Politicians who buy votes do not trust the people’s judgment, and citizens who sell their votes are giving away the power that should be used to build a better society.

We must change our mindset and understand that the ballot is our most powerful weapon for change. Elections are not opportunities to collect money; they are opportunities to determine the quality of our future,” the statement concluded.

  • YPP to Soludo: State in coma

YPP to Soludo: State in coma

The governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Anambra State, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has taken a jab at the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, saying the state may not be broken “but in a coma.”

His remark, made while addressing academics at the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Secretariat of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Monday, was seen as an indirect reference to Soludo’s popular 2021 campaign slogan, “Anambra is not broken, but we will fix it.”

Chukwuma accused the Soludo administration of failing to live up to its promises, lamenting that insecurity, poverty, and poor governance had pushed the state to the brink. “The problems in Anambra are enormous. Every day, people are being raped, killed, extorted, and kidnapped — yet we have a government in place,” he said.

“Anambra is not broken, but it is in a coma. When I am allowed to govern after the November 8 election, these problems will become history.”

The YPP candidate promised to make security his top priority, vowing to restore peace and order in the state within his first six months in office.

He unveiled plans to implement a community-based security architecture, anchored on “community mapping,” which he said would empower residents to take charge of their own safety in partnership with security agencies.

“If I get your endorsement, the state will be free from insecurity within six months. A committee will be set up to handle security through community mapping, ensuring every community participates actively in protecting its people,” he stated.

Chukwuma alleged that Anambra receives about N4 billion monthly in security votes from the Federal Government, insisting that the funds have not translated into improved safety or public confidence.

“The N4 billion being sent by the Federal Government every month for security is enough to solve the problem if properly utilised,” he said.

He urged residents to stop blaming the Federal Government for the state’s challenges, arguing that the presidency had been consistent in providing financial support to states to address issues like insecurity and infrastructure.

“Let our people stop blaming the Federal Government. The president has been consistent in releasing enough funds to Anambra. The problem is not at the centre — it’s with our leadership at the state level,” Chukwuma added.

The YPP flagbearer said his campaign was rooted in inclusiveness, promising to run a government that would prioritise both the educated elite and the working-class population, including market traders, artisans, and farmers.

“Anambra State belongs to professors and market people alike. It is for everybody,” he said.

“We are coming to take back our state from a clueless administration and return it to the people who truly own it.”

Chukwuma also outlined plans to address key sectors such as agriculture, electricity, healthcare, and education, which he described as the pillars of his development agenda.

He promised to invest in rural electrification projects, strengthen agricultural cooperatives, revitalise hospitals, and make education more accessible and competitive.

“We will revive our hospitals, support farmers, and ensure that every community in Anambra feels the impact of governance. Our mission is to bring life back to a state that is merely surviving on autopilot,” he declared.

Enugu North APC group seeks ministerial slot, decries 26 years of exclusion

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Frontiers in Enugu North Senatorial Zone has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to appoint an indigene of the area as minister, lamenting that the zone has never produced one since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

In a statement titled “A Humble Request for You to Break the Jinx” jointly signed by the group’s National Convener, Ejikeme Ugwu (Agunechemba), and National Secretary, Sydney Eze, the group described the situation as “a clear manifestation of marginalization and lack of fairness.”

According to them, while Enugu West has produced four ministers (57%) and Enugu East three (43%) since 1999, Enugu North has had none, despite constituting over 52 percent of the state’s population.

The group argued that their zone has consistently supported the APC and nurtured the party’s growth in Enugu, stressing that many qualified professionals, technocrats, and loyal members from the area are capable of serving in the Federal Executive Council and other federal positions.

They noted that between 2015 and 2023, no person from the zone held any executive appointment, except General Eze, who served as ambassador, and the late Senator Ayogu Eze, who was appointed a commissioner at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in 2023.

Appealing for equity, the group urged President Tinubu to “renew the hope of the good people of Enugu North” by appointing a minister from the zone. They pledged continued support for his administration and promised to deliver massive votes to the APC in 2027 if their request is granted.
