The activities will begin a week before February 14 and will continue till the end of the month due to the number of projects lined up for inauguration.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to launch a bridge project across River Nun at Angiama, linking Oporoma, the headquarters of the Southern Ijaw Local Government.

The governor at the weekend inspected some of the projects at stages of completion.

Others were the Igbedi Road, Glory Drive Road, Bayelsa Transport Terminal at Igbogene, Phase One of the Igbogene/AIT Ring Road, the Elebele Bridge, the Onopa Bridge and its access roads.

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Moses Teibowei, said between 20 and 30 projects in sectors would be ready for inauguration.

Teibowei, a surveyor, said the contractors had been mobilised and mandated to complete the projects within specific time, in readiness for their inauguration.

He said: “Between 20 and 30 projects should be ready, not only in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, but also in education, health, agriculture and other sectors.

“My target is to complete assigned projects and I believe that some of the projects visited will be completed.”

Diri, who hailed the Works Commissioner, described him as a capable hand with a competent team.

He said that based on the reports he received on the progress of work, he decided to have first-hand knowledge of what had been achieved so far.

The governor said: “What I have seen is commendable. You know I have a very capable hand in the Ministry of Works and very competent monitors.

“I have been receiving reports. I came myself to confirm the reports that I have received so far.

“What we have seen is very commendable and we are sure that the targets will be kept.”

A jubilant crowd welcomed the governor and the inspection team at Angiama, a riverine community in Southern Ijaw Local Government, who saw cars for the first time when the road project got to the community.

The people could not hold back their joy on seeing the governor and his convoy and showered praises on him for the Yenagoa-Oporoma Road project, which was inherited from the last administration.

The Bayelsa Central Senatorial District road is one of the federal projects in the state that had been on the drawing board for over 50 years before the state government undertook its construction.

Fire has destroyed a petrol station belonging to the Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uche Ogah.

The filling station, Masters Energy, is located on the busy Aba Road in Umuahia North Local Government of Abia State.

The inferno caused pandemonium on the major road, forcing vehicular movements to be diverted to other exit routes, to prevent further escalation or damages to other adjoining properties and vehicles plying the road.

Nobody died in the fire that engulfed a petroleum tanker discharging content at the petrol station.

The acting Comptroller of Abia Fire Service, Mr. Arua Nnanna, in a phone interview, said the tanker was discharging 43,000 litres PMS (Petroleum Motor Spirit) into the filling station’s dump when it went up in flames.

He said the fire was caused by a generator being used to transfer the PMS from the tanker to the dump.

“From the information we got, the generator they used to transfer PMS from the tanker to the dump caught fire.

“They couldn’t contain the fire. We were called and the state and federal government firefighters swung into action to contain the fire.

“Part of the filing station was affected, but the good story is that nobody died. We saved property worth millions of naira because if we had not come, the damage on adjoining buildings would have been huge,” Nnanna said.

He urged petroleum station owners to ensure that they equipped their facilities with fire extinguishers, adding that they should also ensure that fire service personnel were within their facilities any time they discharged petroleum products in their facilities, to prevent recurrence.

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Anthony Agbazuere, among others, were around to ensure that the fire was put out.
