2023: Rivers people‘ll decide who governs – Abe

Former representative of Rivers South-East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has said that Rivers people will decide who will govern them in 2023 as their fate does not lie in the hands of any individual.

Abe, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, said this on Friday in Port Harcourt while addressing some party faithful and returnees of the All Progressives Congress (APC), from different political parties in the Rivers West Senatorial District of the State.

He commended their decision to reunite with other members of the party in order to build purposefully, describing them as men of honour and integrity who have placed the interest of the state and interest of the party above parochial sentiments.

The Senator maintained that, for Rivers State to actualize the dreams and aspirations of its founding fathers, the people need to come together regardless of whatever may have transpired in the past and focus on the future, as the project is about the future of Rivers State.

Abe said: “Let me thank each and every one of you for the decision you have taken; our brothers and friends from Rivers West who left the course and have decided to come back for us to join hands together, to get this boat to the shore.”

“I also want to assure you that what you have done is what is expected of men of honour and integrity to put the interest of the state and interest of the party above every other interest.

“I want you to know that to take Rivers State to where it needs to be, all of us must come together regardless of what we have done before, regardless of what we have said, regardless of what we have felt before.

“This project is about the future of Rivers State, not about the past. Whatever is past let it remain in the past. For what is in front of us is more important than what is behind us.

“Once again, I am very, very happy to welcome you all back in to the party and to say, that I will like to invite all men and women of goodwill across Rivers State, those who have the courage, those who have the knowledge, those who have intuition to be able to see what has not happened that can happen.

“Those who have the capacity, those who have the quality to be able to understand what people say, that the time is now.”

He went further to say that it is important for people to realize that the APC in the state is made up of people, who have brains and could think for themselves.

The Senator said: “It is important for people to realize that the APC in the State is made up of people, who have brains and could think for themselves. And so, we must learn to do things differently.

“That is why the purpose of consultation is important, so that we will not make mistakes. All of you that have been the strength of this party, that have been the strength of the Rivers West Senatorial District, all of you that have come to say that you are coming back to join us to work together, you are also part of the consultation and we will listen to you.”

Earlier, leader of Rivers West Senatorial District Plus One, Lucky Ottos said they took the decision to reunite with party members for the interest of a better Rivers State.

Ottos said: “We cannot hand over Rivers State to people who are not qualified to govern and that’s why we sat down and decided that we will work with you; Senator Magnus Ngei Abe”.

Highlight of the event was a presentation of request to Senator Abe by the group, urging him to throw his cap into the ring and run for governor of Rivers State in 2023.

COVID-19: Enugu, AUDA-NEPAD partner on empowerment of farmers

The Enugu State government has taken measures in furtherance of its efforts to cushion the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the people and the economy of the state.

Consequently, the Enugu State office of the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for African Development (AUDA-NEPAD), held an interactive meeting with stakeholders in the state (traditional rulers of autonomous communities and presidents general of town unions) on the agency’s agricultural project aimed at empowering smallholder farmers and boosting food production to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Addressing the stakeholders, the Enugu State Commissioner for Special Duties and State Co-ordinator/Focal Person in charge of AUDA/NEPAD, Enugu Office, Hon. Mrs. Mabel Agbo, disclosed that AUDA-NEPAD Continental Office in collaboration with some international agencies took bold measures to cushion the impact of COVID-19 on the citizens by initiating the project, entitled “Innovative Strengthening of Small holder Farmers Capabilities Towards Productive Land Restoration Amid COVID-19 in Nigeria”.

Mrs. Agbo said that “this project as the title connotes is aimed at empowering smallholder farmers in our different communities in all agriculture value chains and segments (crops and livestock) to boost their capacity for food production, especially in the aftermath of the devastating impact of COVID-19 on our economy”.

She stressed that “to reduce the negative impact of this pandemic, we must step up efforts to enhance the capacity of our farmers to provide food for the wellbeing of our citizens.”

Revealing that the African Union (AU) has set the ball rolling by providing the required money for the realization of the agricultural project, the AUDA-NEPAD State Coordinator pointed out that “our goal-oriented Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was equally not found wanting as he readily approved the provision of the counterpart fund required for this project”.

Mrs. Agbo therefore urged the traditional rulers of the autonomous communities in Enugu State and the Presidents General of Town Unions to ensure that lands are made available for use by the potential farmers, who she said are eager to embrace the challenges of cluster farming but do not have the requisite land space for the agricultural project in their various communities.

“As the custodians of your ancestral lands, we expect you to help by disentangling those cultivable lands under your jurisdiction that are not presently in use.

“We are also aware that in some communities, the Green Lands earlier earmarked/acquired by the government for agriculture have been encroached by land grabbers.

“We enjoin you to help us identify these lands and take necessary steps to free them for use in this project”.

Also speaking, the representative of the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Afam Ngene, described the project as laudable, commending the AUDA-NEPAD for the initiative.

The Commissioner equally lauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for ensuring that the programme reaches all the nooks and crannies of Enugu State, for full actualization of the objectives in the interest of the farmers in particular and the state in general.

He hinted that the project has a ten years duration that will outlive the present administration both at the state and federal levels.

  • Soldiers burn trucks conveying illegal petroleum products in Abia

Soldiers burn trucks conveying illegal petroleum products in Abia

Soldiers attached to the 144 Battalion of 14 Brigade Army Headquarters in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State have reportedly destroyed 6 vehicles conveying illegally refined crude oil within its Area Of Responsibility (AOR).

Our correspondent gathered that the vehicles were intercepted at three locations within Owaza community in Ukwa West Local Government Area and along the ever-busy Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway by its personnel who were on routine patrol within the said locations.

Sources within the 14 Brigade who would not want their names in print told our correspondent that the personnel of the Nigerian Army destroyed the vehicles after the drivers abandoned their cars to run into the bush on sighting the soldiers on patrol.

A source in the 14 Brigade Headquarters who confirmed the burning of the trucks disclosed that the burning of the vehicles conveying the illegally refined crude oil were because the soldiers could not arrest any of the drivers of the unmarked vehicles whose owners could not be traced.

“The patrol team from 144 Battalion who were on patrol within their AOR stumbled on a group of persons who were moving illegally refined crude oil from a dump site on sighting the patrol team abandoned their vehicle and ran into a nearby bush. The six vehicles were intercepted along Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway as the drivers had abandoned them to run into the bush.

“The 144 Battalion team also intercepted a white, sky blue Toyota bus loaded with illegally refined product in Owaza, Ukwa West LGA on January 22 during a patrol after the driver on sighting the troop abandoned the vehicle and ran into the bush.

“A white and red coloured Toyota bus loaded with illegally refined products was intercepted by the patrol team on the same day at about 9:20pm in Owaza, Ukwa West LGA.

“The Vehicles were moved to a dump site where they were set ablaze by the team as there were no suspects to prosecute along with the intercepted vehicles.”

The source added that the security agency would not fold its arms to watch unscrupulous and unpatriotic Nigerians continue in their illegal bunkering which the source said was an economic sabotage.

  • FG, states must show commitment to Made-in-Nigeria products, says pan-Igbo group

FG, states must show commitment to Made-in-Nigeria products, says pan-Igbo group

Apex Igbo sociocultural group, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on the federal government and various state governments to show commitment to patronizing locally made products if they want the economic fortunes of the country to improve.

The group also emphasized that patronising locally manufactured products would encourage local manufacturers and help Nigeria to achieve security in various sectors as well as boost the country’s economy.

The group’s remarks followed the decision of the Anambra State Governor-elect, Professor Charles Soludo, on the far-reaching policy statement that Innoson vehicle would be his official car while in office as the governor of the state.

The statement which was issued by the group’s spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia on Friday reads in part: “The implication is that if President Muhammadu Buhari, 36 State governors, National Assembly members, ministers, etc adopt the Soludo Model by patronizing the local goods and services including Medicare, schools, cars, foods, etc, the regrettable tailspin of Nigerian economy, perhaps, may be reversed.”

The pan-Igbo group, which extolled Soludo on the far-reaching policy statement, described as robust the steps he had taken so far, which it said had proved beyond doubt that he is an experienced development economist and a scholar of world renown.

The group noted that the Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Co. Ltd (IVM) as a Nigerian automobile manufacturer based in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria, had gained wide market and acceptability, especially in African countries, namely; Mali, Sierra Leone, Ghana, etc.

“In July 2017, the Malian government placed an order for 400 Innoson vehicles and they were duly supplied. Also, in August 2020, the Sierra Leone government placed an order to the IVM worth over $4.7million and were delivered.

“A lot of other transactions with IVM by African countries are replete.

It is therefore morally reprehensible and indeed the worst form of imperialism for Nigerian governments at all levels to prefer and patronize foreign companies as against the locally manufactured goods.

For instance, while other African countries patronize IVM, the Nigerian Lawmakers in 2019, placed an order for Japanese cars valued over N5.5 billion.

“On the other hand, the aggregate expenditure on foreign cars by all levels of the Nigerian government is over 200 Billion per annum.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo posits on a firm wicket that when the volume of import into a country far exceeds its exports, the balance of trade is distorted and the value of its currency severely threatened.

“The self-induced imperialism and mass poverty by the Nigerian leadership takes various forms: most people in government own buildings in the USA, UK, Germany, France, etc, and their children attend schools in foreign countries; the fuel for cars, gas for bigger machines, including kerosene; health care, etc are sourced from foreign countries. In fact, almost everything which can be sourced within are imported without corresponding effort for meaningful exports.

“This obnoxious self-inflicted injury has already thrown Nigeria into the poverty capital of the world and fragile states index status; and counting”, the statement said.

  • Soludo can’t be allowed to fail – PDP chieftain

Soludo can’t be allowed to fail – PDP chieftain

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra, Chima Christian on Friday said the party would play a strong opposition by keeping the governor-elect, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo on his toes.

He said as the March 17 inauguration of Anambra’s governor-elect draws close, Soludo could not afford to fail or disappoint the people whose expectations are high.

He said, “We are at a time when the confidence of the masses on the political leadership of the southeast is at an all-time low.

“The whole of the Southeast, not just Anambra, suffers from pervasive voter apathy, rooted in a deep-seated feeling that the collective aspiration of our people for a better life can no longer be achieved through the political process.

“Soludo is brilliant and eloquent,  especially through his utterances since he was declared governor-elect. This has raised a lot of hope that democracy can be given one more shot in the state.

“One could then imagine how tragic it will become if Soludo disappoints. That possible endpoint is frightening and if it happens, the Southeast will, no doubt, slide into possible anarchy.

“This is why Soludo, when he becomes the governor of Anambra State, cannot be allowed to fail,” he said.

Chima, an aspirant to the position of Publicity Secretary of the state chapter of the PDP in the upcoming party congresses, said he was running for the office as there was the need for a vibrant opposition in the state.

“Though partisan politicians, we are more mindful of the harm Soludo’s failure will do to the collective psyche and destiny of our people than the cheap political points that may accrue to our party on the account of his failure.

“The goal is not to provide toxic opposition but through robust engagement, Soludo will, at every turn, see Anambra PDP as a constant reminder of the enormous responsibility that has been placed on his shoulders.

“Soludo will also be reminded of the monumental consequences of him not doing the work expected of him,” he said.

Ugwuanyi receives ‘Most Peaceful Governor in Nigeria’ award

Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was yesterday given a national award as the ‘Most Peaceful Governor in Nigeria’, by the Messengers of Peace Foundation.

Conferring the prestigious national award on Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu, the National President of the foundation, Dr. Sulaiman Adejoh, said the honour was in recognition of the governor’s zeal, steadfastness and untiring efforts in ensuring that “there is calmness in Enugu State and Nigeria by extension”.

He said: “We have taken note of these efforts because it is not ordinary. It takes somebody that has something upstairs and a man of peace to be able to use all the connections, including God, to make sure there is peace in his state.

“And by the power given to you as the serving governor of Enugu State, you have used your God-given ability to make sure that there is relative calmness.”

The national president said the Messengers of Peace Foundation is the organiser of the prestigious National Peace Awards in Nigeria; the prominent Queen of Peace in the country and worldwide; and the African Peace Awards, adding that “by June this year we will be going to London for first Global Messengers of Peace Awards in partnership with Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of England.”

According to him, “we are the only Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the country now that has the responsibility of providing peace customised vehicle number plates to promote peace at the grassroots.

“Your Excellency, we are here to identify with your success as the Most Peaceful Governor in the whole country. We have gone round, especially in the rural areas. We saw the good roads. We sampled opinions. We are going to send you video clips for you to see the positive things your people have said about you.

“We are strongly behind you in prayers. The same God who gave you the wisdom to build roads, bring your people together and empower them in several other ways is the one that will bless you in the mighty name of Jesus.

“So we are here to say thank you so much for all you are doing for your people and in Nigeria as well.”

Ugwuanyi dedicated the award to God and stressed that God is the one behind all his successes and the unmerited favour he has gained in life.

Noting that peace is the costliest commodity in life, the governor said it is impossible to achieve the primary purposes of government, which are security and welfare of the people, without peace.

He said: “If there is a commodity in the market called peace, nations are prepared to buy it at all cost. Because we entrusted Enugu State to the hands of God, we have seen God’s hands in affairs of the state. I dedicate this award to the Almighty God. • Soludo seeks modest inauguration, says govt

Soludo seeks modest inauguration, says govt

Anambra State governor-elect Prof. Chukwuma Soludo is planning a low-key inauguration, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. C Don Adinuba has said.

He described the purported rift between Governor Willie Obiano and Soludo as the handiwork of the opposition.

Adinuba said it was a disinformation campaign against the government.

He said the opposition should look for another thing to do since the election ended over two months ago, adding that the relationship between Obiano and Soludo remained cordial.

Adinuba said such disinformation was designed to “de-market the state, create trust deficit between the people and the government and manufacture a friction between the outgoing administration of Obiano and the incoming administration of Soludo.

The  National Coordinator of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Media Warriors Forum, Chinedu Obigwe, told The Nation that  Obiano and Soludo remained friends and partners in the grand plan to make Anambra a great state and an investor’s destination.

Contacted yesterday, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Obiano, Mr. James Eze, said he would not react to a non-existent issue, adding that those flying such kites knew why they were doing so.

The Nation learnt that the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor planned to spend N20 million for the inauguration, “as the amount will take care of all expenses.”

Soludo will be sworn in on March 17, after the expiration of Obiano’s second term in office.
