Why we’re committed to Bayelsa senatorial road projects, by Diri

Despite being federal projects, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has restated the commitment of his administration to build and complete Central, East and West senatorial roads.

He made this known at the weekend at Ekeremor after inspecting the progress of work on the Bayelsa West Senatorial Road from Sagbama to Ekeremor, a statement yesterday by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, said.

The governor said the determination to construct the three senatorial roads was premised on their importance to the people in opening up the state and in stimulating socio-economic activities.

He said regardless of the economic downturn and the fact that the roads were federal projects, his government would not be discouraged, but would ensure that they were built for the benefit of the people.

Diri expressed satisfaction about the level of work done on the West Senatorial road and was optimistic that it would be delivered on schedule.

He praised the contractor, Setraco, for completing five bridges between Toru-Orua and Isampou communities and for the ongoing work on the sixth bridge at the entrance into Ekeremor main town.

The governor said the state was getting value for money so far spent and gave approval for the construction of another bridge at Ekeremor.

He hoped that on the second anniversary of his administration on February 14, people would be able to drive to Ekeremor main town.

On the Bayelsa East Road, Diri said efforts were still on to get the Federal Government to be involved in its construction and assured the people that regardless of the response from the Federal Government, his administration would begin the project.

He said: “I decided again to embark on an inspection tour of our big ticket project in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, the Sagbama-Ekeremor road, where the contractor, Setraco, is doing a great job.

“So far, they have completed five bridges on that stretch and I have given approval for the sixth bridge by the entrance to Ekeremor main town.

“The contractor has assured us that they will speed up work on the road and achieve a stone-base to enable us drive into Ekeremor main town by next month.

“The progress on the project is awesome and it is surely in the best interest of our people.

“I’m satisfied with the level of work on this Sagbama-Ekeremor road. The contractors, Setraco, are doing a good job and I think the value for money is commensurate. We are happy and we hope that they will deliver at the agreed time.”

  • ECCIMA worried over financing deficit budget with N5 trillion loan

ECCIMA worried over financing deficit budget with N5 trillion loan

THE Enugu Chamber of Commerce Industries Mines and Agriculture, ECCIMA, has expressed concern over the borrowing of  N5 trillion to finance the deficit budget.

The President of the Chamber, Sir Emeka Nwandu made this known in Enugu at the 48 Annual General Meeting of the Chamber in Enugu.

Nwandu said that the debt burden of the Nigerian economy, especially that of the continuous borrowing from the Central Bank has left the exchange rate on all-time low.

“Effort must be made to save the naira and our economy.

“The Chamber is worried about the Federal Government plan to introduce N10 per litre tax on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages through the Finance Act signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 31,2021.

“Sincerely we think that this tax if implemented would be counterproductive as the reason stated by the Federal Government for imposing this tax does not outweigh the unemployment issues it would generate,” Nwandu said.

He however supported raising revenues for health-related and other critical expenditures as stated by the government and suggested that high import duties should be placed on foreign manufactured drinks only, to encourage local beverage drink manufacturers.

“We appeal to the Federal Government to play with caution on the implementation of the Petroleum Industrial Act, (PIA) and the potential removal of subsidy planned for this year, 2022 to avoid inflationary pressures that could be detrimental to household income considering the slow pace of household income growth in Nigeria since 2015”, he said.

The ECCIMA president established the chamber’s commitment in the promotion of business and economic development as well as collaborating with various levels of government in boosting business and investment opportunities in Enugu state, the south east, and indeed Nigeria.
