Wike seeks safe, healthy states, says commissioner

Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications Paulinus Nsirim has said Governor Nyesom Wike desired a safe and a healthy state for residents.

He spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt at a meeting with managers of state-owned government media organisations.

The commissioner urged the media to drive a conversation that would enlist the support of those living and doing business in Rivers, to achieve the objectives of the government.

He said: “We must use our media houses to make our people not to politicise what the governor is doing in this direction.

“Wike means well for Rivers people. It is only a man who has the interest of the people he is governing at heart that will come up with that kind of new year agenda.

“Of course, we are all aware that bunkering and artisanal refineries contribute to the environmental challenges we are facing, with soot in the state.

“From the governor’s new year broadcast, you find that there is a strategic move to end bunkering and artisanal refineries.

“This meeting is to draw our attention to the fact that we need to play a very prominent role in advocacy, enlightenment and sensitisation of the citizenry to buy into this positive agenda of the government.”

“We owe our state that obligation to ensure Rivers is safe and healthy so that people whose stock in trade is to see no good in the policies of the government are shunned.

“The people must shun these naysayers. The people must shun those who are playing to the gallery, those who are looking for cheap popularity and publicity.”

Pastor Nsirim advised the media to drive a conversation through  their programmes to help people understand that the governor had the interest of the people at heart.

“It should be aggressive. Let it permeate the minds of those living and doing business in Rivers State. This is what we should all join hands with the government to do,” he said.

‘Ikpeazu remains Abia PDP leader till 2023’

The Chief Press Secretary to Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Onyebuchi Ememanka, has reacted to a rumour on the governor’s plan to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This is coming on the heels of the recent visit and closed-door meeting between Ikpeazu and the leader of APC in Abia State and Chief Whip of the Senate, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu.

The governor had received Kalu at his Umuobiakwa country home in Obinngwa Local Government.

He, alongside his aides and personal staff, who were already waiting for Kalu, received the Senate Chief Whip, who arrived at the governor’s mansion on January 7, at 1:32 pm.

After exchanging pleasantries, Ikpeazu went into an inner room with Kalu for a meeting.

Dismissing Ikpeazu’s planned defection to the APC, Ememanka regretted the reactions that had trailed Kalu’s visit to the governor at Umuobiakwa and lamented that the development had shown that many people were interested in empty conspiracy theories.

He said Ikpeazu would always receive his visitors, especially his predecessors.

Said he: “Those who know Ikpeazu will tell you that even when you have disagreement with him, based on political ideologies, it doesn’t affect his relationship with you.

“He is a kind governor. He will receive a former governor, even if they don’t agree politically. No such issue ever came up during their talks. If anyone will defect on account of that visit, it is certainly not Governor Ikpeazu.”

The spokesman reaffirmed the loyalty of Ikpeazu to the PDP, noting: “Ikpeazu remains a member and a leader in the PDP. He will lead the party in Abia State to victory in 2023.”

  • Ayade promises judges salary increment

    Ayade promises judges salary increment

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade yesterday swore in Justice Maurice Eneji as the president of the Customary Court of Appeal.

Also sworn in were four High Court judges and four Customary Court judges.

The four High Court judges are Justice Obo Agbor Anthony, Justice Ititim Felix  Igobi, Justice  Dada Eunice Oshim and Justice Ankpor Jeremiah  Arong.

The Customary Court judges are Justice Daniel Ofre Kulo, Justice Rita Otu Marshall, Justice Odibu Emmanuel Ekanya and Justice Obin Blessing Egwu.

At the event held at the State Executive Council Chamber, Prof. Ayade decried the poor salary structure of judges in the country, noting that despite the lean financial resources, Cross River would be the torchbearer in upping the standard of living of judges by reviewing their salaries.

He said he will meet the House of Assembly to ensure the new salary structure for judges takes effect by March 1.

The governor said: “This is a very clear statement that will charge the whole country on to look into the salary of judges.

“From the 1st of March, the salary of our judicial officers in Cross River State will be changed for good. We will increase your salaries so that other states can know that Cross River, which is number 35 out of 36 states in terms of federal allocation, can increase the salary of judges. If Cross River State can increase the salary of judges, which state will not increase? It is a way to compel them to increase the salary of judges because it is sad that you put a man in such a sensitive position and expose him to temptation by leaving him on the same salary scale for 13 years.”

According to him, “Cross River State will enact the appropriate law in partnership with the legislature so that by March, we will have a new salary structure for our judges.”

C/River 2023: ‘Blackmail against Wike no guarantee for PDP ticket‘

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Ambassador Ojong Agbor, has decried what he called the continuous  blackmail against the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, by one of those running  for governor  on the party’s platform.

Agbor said no amount of campaign of calumny against Governor Wike will sway support of the PDP members in Cross River State in support of the aspirant.

Ambassador Agbor, who reiterated his support for  Senator Sandy Onor, said like every other members of the PDP in Nigeria, Governor Wike is free to express support for the aspiration of anyone.

He said the meeting Governor Wike held with some PDP stakeholders in Abuja a few days ago was not secret, adding that those using the meeting to orchestrate campaign of calumny against Governor Wike are only wasting their time and resources.

“They have tried to use zoning sentiments, which did not work. Now it is to blackmail Governor Wike, who is doing everything to get our party back on winning track.

“Is it that those of us that supporting Senator Onor’s governorship  ambition do not have right to do so? Are they also saying that Governor Wike does not have right to friendship?

“However, we will keep the game descent while we continue to consolidate our grassroots support for Onor. We will see how jumping from one media house to another to spread falsehood will help them,” Agbor said.

  • Leaked meeting of Wike with Duke, Imoke, others creates conflict in Cross River PDP

Leaked meeting of Wike with Duke, Imoke, others creates conflict in Cross River PDP

Discussions at a closed-door meeting in Abuja, of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike with stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State have been leaked, thereby generating conflicts among political interest groups in the party.

The meeting, held last weekend in the home of the former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Liyel Imoke, was also attended by ex-governor Donald Duke, Sen. Gershom Bassey, Sen. Sandy Onor and the state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Venatius Ikem.

Wike is believed to be the major financier of the PDP exco structure in Cross River State since Governor Ben Ayade defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The meeting was reportedly meant to address the division that emerged in the PDP, following arguments and counter- arguments on the need to declare the 2023 governorship ticket of the party as zoned to the Southern Senatorial District.

Besides the party leadership in the state refusing to declare the ticket zoned to the South, the friendship of the Rivers  governor with the lawmaker representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Prof. Sandy Onor, who is a governorship aspirant, was seen as the obvious interest of Wike to see his friend become governor in Cross River State.

Responding to the leaked discussion of the meeting, which was awash in the social media, the Director General of Sen. Sandy Onor Campaign Organisation, Mr. Joe Obi, said all sorts of stories had been scripted and fabricated for selfish ends.

He added: “It is necessary and critical at this juncture to rest your mind with the truth! Yes, a high-powered PDP meeting took place in Abuja a few days ago between Wike, Duke, Imoke, Onor and Bassey.

‘The heart-to-heart fraternal but confidential talks are meant to be classified for now, or truthfully released to confidants. However, what we saw in the social media was a total and conscious misrepresentation of discussion of the meeting, with intent to compromise our distinguished senator and his overwhelmingly popular governorship ambition.

“Please rest your mind, nothing has changed! We are still in the race for the governor.”

In a seeming counter-message from the camp of Sen. Bassey, who is also aspiring for the governorship ticket of the party, his Campaign Director General, Mr. Ekpo Adasaid, said: “These stories are designed to compromise our principal and cast aspersions on his integrity. We condemn this skullduggery in its entirety. Private political meetings are not new, they are the life blood of political processes. Our campaign organisation  respects and understands this and will never leak confidential information.”
