Wike bans nightclubs, prostitution on Abacha road

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has banned nightclubs and prostitution on the popular Abacha road in Port Harcourt.

He said: “No responsible government should continue to tolerate open display and solicitation of sexual services, drug abuse and public intoxication that take place on streets and in public areas around some of these nightclubs, lounges and bars by youths; some under 14 years.”

The governor, while pronouncing the ban as part of his new year message, also threatened to replace first-class monarchs, who were fond of not attending state functions.

He said: “The consistent absence of some first-class traditional rulers, especially the Amayanabo of Okrika, the Amayanabo of Ogu, the Amayanabo of Kalabari and the Gbenemene Nyo-Khana at state functions is unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated.

“Should they, therefore, continue to absent from state functions or regular meetings and activities of the Traditional Rulers Council, we will have no option, but to direct their replacement.”

Wike hailed security agencies for keeping the state safe last year.

He said the government would from the second week of January begin demolition of shanties and makeshift structures at crime hotspots in Port Harcourt, particularly Illabuchi area of Diobu, to sustain peace.

The governor said those attempting to resume illegal trading at the closed Oginigba slaughterhouse had one week to vacate the place or risk being arrested and prosecuted.

He said the government would take over vacant plots or uncompleted buildings in the Old and New Government Reservation Areas (GRAs) and other parts of Port Harcourt City and Obio/Akpor councils occupied by criminals.

Wike said the government would recover and restore landfilled or reclaimed wetlands and demolish structures erected on natural water channels from the Eastern bypass to Abana and Eleme streets in the Old GRA.

He said the proposed action was part of measures to check perennial flooding in parts of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor councils, adding that only those with government permits and papers would be compensated.

The governor announced ban on cart pushers’ activities, noting that they had become notorious for scavenging of manhole covers.

He ordered law enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone violating the ban.

Wike banned disposal of refuse on the streets or open spaces in the Old and New GRAs of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor councils; pasting of posters, fliers, pictures, artworks, placards or inscriptions on or under  flyovers, bridges, concrete walls and safety barricades on the roads.

He said the government would establish environmental marshals to enforce compliance with the sanitation laws.

The governor directed the chairmen of Port Harcourt, Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor and Oyigbo councils to within three weeks, from January 1, impound and remove trailers and articulated vehicles parked on the streets beyond 48 hours.

He sympathised with the victims of the recent fire incidents, especially those who lost their loved ones and property.

Wike said the government would strengthen the state Fire Service and urged the public take responsibility, to prevent fire outbreaks.

  • Despite challenges, we’re committed to better Bayelsa, says Diri

Despite challenges, we’re committed to better Bayelsa, says Diri

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has said despite the challenges of the past year, his administration remains focused on ensuring a prosperous and better state for the people.

Diri, who stated this in a New Year Day broadcast on all Yenagoa-based radio and televisions, also said there were many reasons to be grateful to God despite the difficult times in the country.

He said that a transition such as the closing of one year and the birth of another represented an important milestone to be thankful for God’s love and kindness.

The governor asserted that in spite of the funding challenges of 2021, his administration recorded significant achievements in healthcare, education, agriculture, youth and women empowerment, security, infrastructure development and reconciliation of aggrieved communities among others.

He praised Bayelsa sportsmen and women, whom he said justified his government’s investment in sports by winning laurels for the state, particularly, Bayelsa United and Bayelsa Queens that won the men and women versions of the AITEO Cup as well as the nine-year-old Deborah Quickpen that won the Under-10 Africa Chess championship.

In the area of security, Diri recalled that in the outgone year, the state’s special security outfit, Operation Doo Akpo, was rejigged, re-inaugurated and kitted with upgraded assets.

While stating that a number of projects would be inaugurated during the second anniversary of the administration in February, Diri assured the people that he would continue to take necessary actions to address the challenges of youths’ unemployment, poverty, inequality and poor health. Diri said: “In retrospect, in 2021, whereas we had to deal with several challenges, particularly in the area of funding, we can nevertheless applaud ourselves for the strides we made in the course of the year by the grace of God.

“The vision for a prosperous Bayelsa is evolving and ongoing. I am the first to acknowledge that despite the undeniable progress, there are areas to improve and gains to consolidate upon. This is the time for genuine friends of the state to align with the prosperity vision so that together we can transform challenges to opportunity and prosperity.”

Queen Diete-Spiff wins award for championing girl-child, women initiative

The Bayelsa Media Network Awards (BMNA) has awarded the President, Royal Queens of the Niger Delta Initiative (RQNDI), Dr. (Evang.) Josephine Diete-Spiff the ‘Symbol of Hope for the Girl Child, Women and the Elderly.’

The organisers of the BMNA bestowed the award on her at their third edition which held at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, recently.

The BMNA said Queen Josephine, wife of the first military governor of old Rivers State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, was awarded for her passion towards the care for the girl-child and women, especially the widows and the elderly through her foundation.

Speaking after receiving the award, Queen Diete-Spiff commended the organisers of the BMNA for the laurel, saying it was her passion and commitment to care for the girl-child and women.

She noted: “I am really happy about the award because it is my passion. I have received so many awards; this is my fifth this year.  I really thank God that I am being acknowledged and I think it is a call to do more and I hope God keeping me strong, I will do my best always.”

She also used the occasion to appeal to Nigerians, particularly the media practitioners to change the narrative of classifying native doctors and criminals causing mayhem in the country as pastors.

She lamented that native doctors and criminals had moved into the church, saying that pastors who were ordained by God would never be found in despicable acts.

“I realise that these days when there is crime, a pastor is always mentioned. It is becoming the norm that when crime is committed, the person is referred to as ‘Pastor’.  I am a Pastor and I like to say that since the native doctors have moved into churches, we should actually classify them properly and stop calling them pastor somebody,” she said, adding: “We should say either native doctor or a criminal has committed an offense because a child of God will not be found in such acts. I would like the media to put it out there that we Christians are not criminals especially when we are titled ‘pastor.’”

The Chairman, Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council and Amayanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, who was full of admiration, appreciated his wife and queen for the award of recognition given to her by the media practitioners.

Diete-Spiff said: “She is a trailblazer. She has never stopped impressing and surprising me daily. So this has come again as a very pleasant surprise and that’s why I am here in person. I wish her more power to her elbow.”

The former military governor expressed his displeasure over the neglect by the multinational oil companies to clean up the crude oil spill and compensate impacted communities caused by the Santa Barbara OML 29 oil field in Nembe, Bayelsa.

NACOPPAM inaugurates Enugu chapter, hints at 2m coconut trees nationwide

Speaking at the swearing ceremony of the new executives of NACOPPAM, yesterday, the National President Dr Nma Okoroji said Nigeria could earn more foreign exchange through coconut than oil in the nearest future.

A statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the state chapter, Mr Ugwu Nnabuike, said Dr Nma Okoroji urged the executives to popularise the planting of coconut by both the Enugu State Government and the farmers in the state in order to position Enugu State in the global map through the coconut sub-sector thus ensuring the actualisation of NACOPPAM’s policy of Coconut Sufficiency In Nigeria COSIN.

Dr Okoroji an agronomist emphasised that the national body envisaged plan to midwife 10,000 hectares (two million coconut trees) of coconut plantations and to develop a robust value chain in each of the 36 states of the federation and Abuja.

    The budget has a capital expenditure profile of N79, 779, 887, 500 with recurrent expenditure valued at N 67, 502, 318, 700.

It will be recalled that Governor Ikpeazu had on 14th December 2021 presented to the State Assembly, an Appropriation Bill in the sum of N147, 787, 781, 300.

The governor expressed his gratitude to the Speaker and members of the State House of Assembly for their display of patriotism in the expeditious review and passage of the Appropriation Bill.

He assures the Assembly and indeed the people of Abia State that he will be relentless in the implementation of this budget for the peace, order and welfare of the people of Abia State.

The governor tasked agencies of the State Government with specific obligations in this budget to take their assignments very seriously.

In particular, he challenged revenue earning agencies in the state to redouble their efforts and carry out their jobs with greater transparency and a deeper sense of patriotism.

With this, Abia State has sustained the January to December budget cycle and this budget becomes effective, tomorrow, January 1st, 2022.

Meanwhile Ikpeazu in his new year message to Abians and resident of the state assured that he will seek an improved socioeconomic outlook for the state.

  • APC chieftain raises the alarm over Bayelsa’s debt profile

APC chieftain raises the alarm over Bayelsa’s debt profile

A leader and founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bayelsa State, Dr. Godwin Sidi, has expressed worry over the alleged alarming debt profile of the state from the figure gotten from the Debt Management Office (DMO).

Though Sidi did not indicate the amount the state government was owing, he said he would unveil it subsequently in the weeks’ ahead.

In an interview with our correspondent yesterday, he demanded to know what Governor Douye Diri intended to do differently with regard to the huge debt profile as against what his immediate predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, did while in office.

He also called on Diri to run an open system of government and all inclusive governance so that the people of the state could feel the dividends of democracy.

Sidi stated: “Diri needs to operate an open system of government, all inclusive governance so that people can also feel the dividends of democracy. I also know that there was some money that was returned as part of the dualisation of some roads in Bayelsa.

“We have also heard of loans taken for agriculture yet the people have yet to see anything. The governor should go beyond rhetoric and address the fundamental issues of governance as we pray for his administration to succeed for the good of all.”

The APC leader also slammed the Douye Diri administration for allegedly not answering the questions raised by a whistleblower, Dr. John Idumange, about the N3bn agriculture loan acquired by the government for farmers.

Sidi, a former Interim Secretary of the APC, said it was necessary for the government to clear the air on the allegations rather than resorting to intimidation and harassment of the whistleblower.

Idumange, a former General Manager of the state-owned Broadcasting Corporation, Glory FM, had accused the Diri’s government of diverting the N3bn agric loan to the private pockets of some individuals, particularly ranking officials of the government.

Idumange was arrested at the gate of a popular radio station in Yenagoa where he was expected to speak on the disbursement formula of the loan and unveil names of beneficiaries, whom he claimed diverted the funds for their personal use.

He was thereafter arrested by the police and charged to court for seditious comments on government officials.

Sidi faulted the state government’s action, rationalising that in a democratic setting, people have the right to ask their leaders questions and they ought to oblige them explanations.

Sidi, therefore, urged the government to answer those fundamental questions being asked rather than using the state’s apparatus to intimidate, harass or detain someone who wanted to know something from his leaders.

He said: “It is funny that when citizen asks fundamental questions, instead of addressing the issue with simple explanation, the government resorts to intimidation, harassment or detention of the person.

“My admonition is that when people like Dr John Idumange or any other person in the state asks question, the government should provide an explanation, even though their answer is no. It will serve the people better. Therefore, we are still waiting for answers to those fundamental issues raised.

“From my observation recently, Bayelsa has become an ‘open prison’. Though people are freely moving about but they are not happy and frustration is all over their faces while the appointees and those in government are laughing to the banks. The complaints of the people are not helping matters.”

The State operates an 8.5 megawatts captive power plant in Asaba to power government offices.

Delta Energy Commissioner, Mr Jonathan Ukodhiko, spoke at Oleh, Isoko South LGA, Delta State.

He said plans have reached advance stage on a legislation that would empower it and private sectors to generate, transmit and distribute electricity to all parts of the state.

He lamented that the almost total blackout experienced in the State has discouraged the takeoff of many industries.

His words, “Let us try and encourage private individuals and companies that have the money to build power plants in various part of the state to generate, transmit and distribute to their area of operations.

“Our amiable governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa has approved three more Independent Power Plants to be located in Ozoro, Warri and Owa Alero-Agbor.

“Presently, different companies have indicated interest. The government is not spending money to build those plants, they will be built by private organizations and sell power to government as the off takers.

“In fact government doesn’t have a business in doing business. We are not going to spend any money in building these power plants.

“The only thing that we are going to do is to buy all the power that is going to be produced, that is, we are going to stand as a guarantor that the power they will generate will be off take from them , that if these people are unable to pay for the power, we will pay for it, “being an off taker of the power in order for them to recoup their investment.”
