The market women had also planned to embarked on a peaceful protest to the Government House Asaba and State House of Assembly to ask why Uvwie local government council want to eject or demolish their lockup stores and alleged demand of N500,000 with January ending 2022 as ultimatum.

A trader in the market, Mrs. Ella Nwankwo who said her mother-in-law is also a victim of this market issue has appealed to the governor and the leadership of the state House of Assembly to intervene and prevail on the Uvwie council Chairman, Hon. Ramson Onoyake not to demolish their lockup stores approved to them by the same government over two decades ago.

Nwankwo said the occupants of the 40 lockup stores had sometimes in 1993, applied to the Okpe local government council, Orerokpe, when Uvwie local government council was not yet created, that then the stores were half completed when allocated to them, and they were built to completion with their own money.

She said the women had always complied with all payments from the then Okpe local government council to when Uvwie local government was created, adding that the issue has been lingering over the years and that they are in court with the council after several protest to the council secretariat where one of the staff said there was no such plans to demolish the stores.

“How could somebody we voted into power could turn against us for just no course for stores we have been occupying for over twenty years, how do we feed our families, pay our children fees, care for ourselves if you demolishing our stores that is very okay, strong, without any of the roof licking, or except you asking or chasing us from Uvwie because we are strangers in your land.”

Meanwhile, the Uvwie local government council Chairman, Hon. Ramson Onoyake when contacted said he cannot speak on the issue since the case is before the Effurun High Court of Justice.

Enugu communities get 367 reading hubs

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), has said it has established 367 community reading hubs in two local government areas of Enugu State.

This followed the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted academic activities across the world.

The NGO said the hubs, which were established in Aninri and Isi-Uzo local governments as continuing learning through alternate homes and community-based platforms, were meant to help pupils and students catch-up with loss academic grounds during the lockdown.

The Project Coordinator, Mrs. Catherine Osho, who listed the achievements of the organisation during the closeout/exit meeting at the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) office in Enugu, said 23,943 children were reached through the programme in the areas.

She said 894 teachers were trained to provide psychosocial support for the children and strengthen 387 School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) to improve sanitation and hygiene for safe school return, abolish gender-based violence and support home-based learning and monitoring activities.

Hailing organisations such as UNICEF, GPE, among others for their support that led to funding and provision of learning materials for pupils, Osho said the project was aimed at ensuring that children, who were not reached during the lockdown, got an opportunity for catch-up/remedial learning, adding that learning continued at home and in the community.

Information Commissioner Prof. Uche Eze and ENSUBEB Chairman Ikechukwu Asogwa expressed  government’s appreciation for the scheme.

They described it as a fantastic job.

The commissioner, represented by the Director of Schools, Mrs. Ayogu Margret, said: “During the lockdown, we taught pupils through radio and television. But a lot of them didn’t have access to the media. That was why this scheme was rolled out. Thank you for the pupils you were able to reach.”

The ENSUBEB chairman, represented by the board’s Secretary, Dr. Hyginus Eze, described the choice of the two councils as best, “because they are boundary communities with Ebonyi, Abia and Benue states, which most times do not have access to radio signals from Enugu.”

Associates, friends honour Peterside with visits to orphanages

Nigerians have once again been urged to show love, care and concern for the less privileged and the elderly, as they deserve attention.

Speakers yesterday said this in Rivers State at orphanages and homes for the elderly, as part of activities to mark the 51st birthday of turnaround expert and former director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside.

Spread across the three senatorial districts of the state, over 1,500 friends, associates, relations and family gathered to underscore one of the burning desires of the celebrant, which is to contribute to the uplift of the humanity and make the world a better place.

Speaking at Daughters of Charity of St Vincent De Paul, Eleme, the leader of the delegation and former chairman of Andoni Local Government, Orom Nte, said the essence of the charity was to encourage the less privileged and inspire them to believe in their abilities to succeed in life.

He said: “Their background should not keep their backs to the ground,” adding that the celebrant was someone who had made modest achievements in life through the grace of God and ‘never-say-die’ attitude.

At the Advent Rehabilitation Orphanage Home, Edeoha in Ahoada East Local Government, the leader of the team, Sir Iyke Enyiche, spoke about the need for members of the society and groups to spare thoughts for the needy and the elderly.

He said that humanity could only be better if all segments were carried along.

They described the celebrant, Dr. Peterside, as a man of love, who had demonstrated respect for elders and love towards children, who were the bastion of succeeding generations.

  • INEC yet to release CTC after Anambra election

INEC yet to release CTC after Anambra election

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State have cried out that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to release a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the governorship results in Anambra State.

This, according to the party, means that there are things the commission is afraid of, despite a court order to release the CTC to the parties.

The acting Chairman of the party, Sir Basil Ejidike, disclosed this yesterday in Awka during APC’s stakeholders’ meeting.

It was attended by the party leader in Anambra State, led by the governorship candidate, Sen. Andy Uba.

During the meeting, two powerful committees were inaugurated. They were 11-member Disciplinary Committee led by Chibuzor Obiakor, while C. J. Chinwuba would serve as Secretary. It had other powerful members like Sir Chris Chikwelu (Ichele -Agulu), among others.

The other committee was the Congress Awareness Committee led by ex-House of Representatives member Raph Okeke. Former House of Representatives member Nze Chidi Duru will serve as Secretary.

Addressing the stakeholders, Ejidike said INEC had not been able to give reason why it had not released the CTC to the parties, noting that it was shameful.

He said: “This is a special gathering because it’s a gathering to give our party a new direction. Any party that fails to win election is not a political party, which has eluded us in the state. APC is a political party and not a club.

“We are going to contest every available position in 2023 and without discipline, we will not win anything. INEC has not been able to issue out CTC, even after it was ordered by the court, because of the difficult situation it has found itself.

“What that action means is that something was wrong during the election. Our tribunal case is justified because the right thing was not done by INEC.

“Those party members who are still pursuing court cases against APC are trying to frustrate our party. Don’t be disillusioned, we will not allow them to derail us.”

NAPTIP to intensify fight against trafficking in Ebonyi

The National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), yesterday expressed readiness to embark on massive campaign and sensitisation in Ebonyi State.

The Head, NAPTIP Liaison Office, Mrs. Bertha Offor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki that the campaign would be taken to motor parks, markets and churches.

She said NAPTIP would also deepen its relationship with its partners to drive the campaign.

Offor listed partners and stakeholders to include the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the National Human Rights Commission and the Police.

She warned traffickers to desist from the crime, as culprits would be prosecuted.

Offor said since the Ebonyi office became operational in September, it had received reports of rescue of new-born babies and the defiling of a 12-year-old girl by a lecturer.

“We learnt that the matters are in court and suspects are in prison custody.

“We were able to sensitise some schools during the 16 days of activism conducted in the state in partnership with the police as a critical stakeholder,’’ she added.

Offor enjoined parents to be on the alert as the year winds down, warning that the period is synonymous with increased activities by traffickers, who exploit gullible adolescents.

‘Uzodimma planning to name opponents as IPOB sponsors’

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has alleged that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma is plotting to publish the names of his political opponents as its (IPOB’s) sponsors.

It said the governor had vowed to reveal the identities of sponsors of insecurity in the state on January 3, 2022.

In a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB said 18 suspects arrested by security agencies had named their sponsors, promising to reveal their identities and roles at a stakeholders’ meeting on January 3.

Describing Uzodimma’s style as laughable, the group warned him to stop targeting his political opponents by labelling them as IPOB sponsors.

The statement said: “The attention of the global family of IPOB has been drawn to a laughable statement from Uzodimma that he would expose IPOB sponsors in Imo State. The statement only confirmed Uzodimma as a confused man.

“IPOB is a self-sponsored global movement. We have no sponsor from anywhere because no individual has the capacity to bankroll this movement.

“In case Uzodimma doesn’t know, IPOB is not like a political party that depends on godfathers to exist. We don’t accept donations from politicians and even Uzodimma knows this.

“If we accept donations from politicians, Uzodimma would have been one of our sponsors, but he is disappointed that we are not swayed by money. We have never hidden our sources of sponsorship, members of this great global family willingly and gladly finance the movement.”
