    Wike signs 2022 N483.1b budget

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday signed the 2022 Appropriation Bill of N483.1billion into law, promising to ensure 80 per cent implementation.

He signed the Appropriation Law No. 11, 2021 at the Executive Chamber of the Government House in Port Harcourt.

The governor said: “By the grace of God, we’ll hit the ground running from January 1, 2022. So, we think what you have done is to give support to the executive council to render good services to the people.”

He hinted that as a political year, 2022 would be turbulent politically and would require a lot of attention.

Wike said the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the Electoral Act amendment bill would have ripple effect on the polity, particularly if the National Assembly decided to override his veto.

He said: “So, next year will be politically turbulent and it will affect performance of every budget. But I pray to God that it shouldn’t be much, so that we will be able to execute the necessary plans and programmes we have for our people.”

Wike said his administration will remain focused in providing services to the state and its people, adding that everything will be put in place to ensure the state has resources to execute the budget.

Soludo’s emergence new dawn in Anambra, says Ndi-Igbo Germany

Ndi-Igbo Germany (N.I.G.), the apex body of all Igbo unions in Germany, has said the emergence of Prof. Charles Soludo as governor-elect of Anambra State is a sign of better days ahead for the state.

The body said this in a statement to congratulate Prof. Soludo, a renowned economist and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, who beat other candidates to emerge as Governor-elect of Anambra in the November 6, 2021 governorship election in the state.

Ndi-Igbo Germany also called on the five South-East Governors to disregard party differences and work in unison for the development of Igboland.

It thanked the people of Anambra State for their orderly participation in the election process and urged the governor-elect to ride on the goodwill of Anambra people to make the state a better place for all citizens.

“Dear governor-elect, your election victory could not have come at a better time. Anambra State and, indeed, the entire South-East was hurting and needed a soothing balm. Your coming provided it,” Ndi-Igbo Germany said in the statement jointly signed by its coordinator, Engr. Oge Ozofor, and general secretary, Mazi Dominic.

“We have no doubt that you are aware of the solid trust and confidence Anambra people have on your ability, wisdom and God-fearing orientation.

“Your experiences, garnered from far and near assignments, and your professionalism have prepared you to govern Anambra State well while initiating policies and synergies in the entire South-East geopolitical zone to entrench solid economic and socio-political growth and sustenance. We urge you to excel the great heights achieved in the South-East and Nigeria by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Dr. M. I. Okpara,” Ndi-Igbo Germany said.

It called for a Marshall Plan that will stimulate the right types of investment appropriate for the 21st century and beyond to be immediately instituted in the entire Igboland.

“Ndi-Igbo Germany (N.I.G.) calls on the governors of the South-East geopolitical zone to act together for regional development. This is urgent and irrespective of party affiliations,” it said.

While appreciating all the other candidates who contested in the November 6 governorship election whom, it said, came with conviction, strength, genuine intentions and readiness to serve Anambra people, Ndi-Igbo Germany said the calibre and quality of the candidates showed the leadership potential that abounds in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The group appreciated the Federal Government of Nigeria for the human and material resources it deployed to ensure the election was peaceful, free and fair.

Ndi-Igbo Germany urged the people of Anambra State and the entire South-East to give their maximum support to Prof. Soludo.

It wished Prof. Soludo God’s guidance, protection and blessings while wishing him and his future team good luck and success.

    Emmanuel signs 2022 N586.9b budget

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has signed the 2022 Appropriation Bill into law, with a total outlay of N586.9 billion.

The budget, christened: ‘Redefining Standards’, was passed by the House of Assembly on December 2.

It has an increase of N4.766 billion, representing 0.8%, from the initial estimate of N582.115 billion presented by the governor on October 25.

The Appropriation Act’s size covers N261.963 billion of recurrent and N324.918 billion of capital expenditures.

Emmanuel, while expressing hope that funds will be available for optimum implementation, said: “We are believing that with God on our side, 2022 will be better than 2021.”

The governor said it became expedient to sign the bill early enough in the week to allow for smooth winding down of 2021 and take-off of 2022, considering nearness to Christmas, the accompanying holidays and envisaged reduced productivity of the state’s predominantly Christian workforce.

He directed that the Accountant-General, Pastor Andrew Essien, should ensure payment of salaries and pensions of public servants and retirees on or before Thursday, to support their Yuletide celebration.

Philanthropist lifts physically-challenged with N30m aids

Lagos-based philanthropist, who preferred anonymity, has donated mobility aids worth over N30million to the physically-challenged in Anambra State.

The aids, including 75 wheelchairs, five walking frames, 20 armpits and about 20 elbow crutches, were distributed to the beneficiaries under the aegis of Association for Comprehensive Empowerment of Nigerians with Disability (ASCEND).

The donor chose to celebrate the Yuletide for the physically-challenged in the state.

Making the presentation, ASCEND National President Chief Cosmas Okoli, who conveyed the items from Lagos to Awka, praised the donor for “moving by his appeals for assistance to vulnerable citizens nationwide.”

Okoli, a Lagos-based entrepreneur, advised his members to take their destinies in their hands, stressing that they had mental and creative abilities like others.

He urged the government and wealthy Nigerians, especially those from the state, to emulate the benefactor, in order to ameliorate the conditions of those living with disabilities.

He said: “Anambra State Government has never looked in our direction, either in form of welfare, employment for our members or for our children, training, scholarship, or assistance in any form.

“Our biggest problem is lack of government support. Many of us have creative and entrepreneurial talents waiting to be tapped. If you empower a disabled person, you are building the nation.”

Markets shut as Aba residents observe sit-at-home

Major markets, government and privately-owned offices were yesterday in Aba, Abia State, shut, as residents continue to observe the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the Southeast.

It was, however, not the same situation in Umuahia, the capital, as economic activities went unhindered.

Our correspondent, who went round Aba, reports that major markets, including Ariaria International Market, Cemetery Market, Shopping Centre, among other markets, remained closed.

Investigation showed that while traders stayed away from their shops, roadside traders took advantage of the situation to make sales.

There was, however, improvement in intra-city and inter-city transportation, as commercial transport companies recorded huge patronage.

Banks and other financial institutions did not open for customers, who were forced to perform other transactions, using their Automated Teller Machines (ATM) cards.

Ex-AI director dedicates award to Tinubu

A former director of Amnesty International (AI) and ace radio presenter, Chris Agu, has dedicated an achiever award given to him to the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Agu, alongside Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and many others, was given the award by Radio Nigeria Coal City FM, Enugu for his consistency in philanthropy and contributions to human and community development.

Speaking after receiving the award, he said he dedicated it to the APC national leader because he was a builder, who invested a lot in human resources, irrespective of religion or tribe.

Agu said Tinubu gave him massive support that made him to win the 2004 local government election as the executive chairman of a council in Kaduna State, which was later cancelled by the then Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi.

He said: “I’m dedicating this award to Asiwaju Tinubu because he is a builder. This is a man that has spent time and money thinking of how to improve humanity.

“Tinubu is one man who has remained consistent with one political party. Unlike other Nigerian politicians who move from one party to another, Tinubu has remained firm.

“I was a foundation member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) with Amb. Jolly Tanko and I contested local government election in 2004 in Kaduna North Local Government of Kaduna State on the platform of the AD.

“I won that election and while people were still celebrating my victory, Governor Makarfi, at 7:30pm, cancelled my election. That was the only local government where he cancelled the election. Makarfi claimed that the Customs seized the election materials for Kaduna North and that there were not enough materials for the election. But it is a lie.”

“Efforts by Makarfi to make me step down for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Alhaji Shehu Jaye, failed.”
