Obi remains consistent in building better society – Cleric

Administrator of St Philomena’s Catholic Hospital and College of Nursing Sciences, Benin City, Rev Fr Michael Oyanoafo, has described a former Peoples Democratic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, as a man very passionate about building a better society.

The cleric expressed optimism that Obi will build a better nation if given the chance.

Oyanoafo spoke at St Philomena’s Catholic Hospital Complex, Benin City, when Obi visited the hospital and presented them a cheque of N2 million to enable them to continue delivering good health care to the society.

The cleric said Obi had remained consistent in his true nature of generosity and kindness. He said Obi had always shown uncommon passion in contributing to a better society even before he assumed office as the governor of Anambra State, while he was in office and even now that he is not in any public office.

“It is rare in this part of the world to see people walk into a hospital with the sole aim of giving to the hospital and to the poor. We are really amazed by Obi’s kind gesture. It is obvious that when given the opportunity, he would transform our nation for the better,” Oyanoafo said.

In his remark, Obi said he has always prioritised poverty eradication, education and health as avenues of investing in society, because they are the critical areas of national development.

Obi praised the proprietor of the hospital and Catholic Archbishop of Benin Archdiocese, Most Rev Augustine Obiora Akubueze and the hospital’s management for their service to the Nigerian society through the hospital. He called on the government to support the hospital in rendering their very critical service to society.

Two injured as herders, farmers clash in Anambra

Two persons were reportedly injured at Ugbene, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, during a clash between farmers and cattle breeders in the area.

But the state Police command told The Nation yesterday that there was no clash between the farmers and herders in the state. The Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, said the clash was simply between two persons.

He disclosed that the incident happened on Wednesday and that it had been resolved amicably.

Tochukwu warned that people should stop fanning the embers of discord in the state, adding that the issue of herders and farmers clashes ended over a year ago.

He said the committee set up by Governor Willie Obiano which included government representatives, all the heads of security agencies in the state, religious leaders, other stakeholders and MACBAN had handled the issue effectively .

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has, however, raised the alarm over  what the group described as  incessant attacks on herders in  the state.

The group alleged that herders living in some parts of the state were being attacked on a daily basis.

The South-East Zonal Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, in a statement, Friday,  in Awka, called on the state governor, Willie Obiano, to intervene.

Siddiki said: “My attention was drawn to a video clip  that went  viral about what  happened at Ugbene community, Awka North LGA, on  Wednesday.

“I made enquiry and found out that  one Musa Adamu was with his cattle at Ugbene community land when  he spotted someone coming to him violently. He asked the person what happened? The person didn’t tell him anything. The person just held his tie, fell him down and matcheted him on his forehead. He also spotted some two persons  coming with force towards them.

“In  the process of defending himself, he stabbed the person, and the person left him. That was how he escaped. We have lost many herdsmen and their cattle in Awka North.

“The Fulani people in the South-East are not violent and we are not here to undermine the business of the people of the area.

“Members of the association had enjoyed cordial relationships with their host communities in Anambra, particularly and the South East region at large until the advent of insecurity across the country which have claimed  many innocent lives.”

Mob lynches vigilante operatives in Aba

A group of angry residents of Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State,  have reportedly lynched two vigilante operatives in Aba. The vigilante operatives were lynched  after allegedly killing a young man simply identified as Chisom. The deceased was said to be  in his late twenties.

The names of the vigilante operatives were not immediately ascertained as at the time our correspondent visited  the crime scene, but  they were identified as  ex-officials of the Abia State Vigilante Service, popularly known as Bakkasi Boys.

The incident happened at Railway by Ogbonnaya Road.

The late Chisom was said to have died in a private hospital where he was rushed for treatment after he was shot. He allegedly mentioned the names of the vigilante operatives as the people who shot him when he resisted their attempt to collect his phone.

He was said to have come out from a drinking bar when the vigilante operatives who many accused of being notorious in the area accosted  and began to harass him.

Our correspondent gathered that the death of Chisom angered some youths and other residents who stormed the apartments of the  two vigilante operatives.

It was gathered that the mob, upon recovering the deceased’s phone from the custody of the vigilante operatives, armed themselves with dangerous weapons and  beat the two vigilante operatives to a pulp.

The vigilante operatives were later set ablaze by the mob.

There are fears that the pump action guns recovered from the vigilante operatives by the mob may have got into the wrong hands.

  • Commuters groan as Delta Christmas carol service shuts down Asaba

Commuters groan as Delta Christmas carol service shuts down Asaba

Thousands of motorists and commuters were, yesterday, for several hours left frustrated following a traffic gridlock occasioned by the  large crowd that attended the 2021 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols hosted by the Delta State government.

The event was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium.

Traffic started building up at about 4pm along the busy Nnebisi Road, a major artery in Asaba metropolis, where the stadium is located  and venue of the festival.

The situation was worsened by the  decision to restrict motorists to one lane by security forces.

The traffic jam stretched from the stadium beyond Ogbogonogo Market to Grand Hotel  and all secondary roads around the metropolis.

The unprecedented traffic  along the Nnebisi Road soon degenerated,  forcing other motorists to detour to alternative routes.

The situation got out of control as more alternative outlets  in Ogbesowe,   Umuagu, Jesus Saves, DLA etc  areas were blocked even  at 9pm.

The Federal Roads Safety Corps and the police abandoned motorists to their fate as public spirited individuals took charge of managing the traffic.

Tricycles,  and other vehicles were trapped as most commuters resorted to trekking to their destinations.

Some motorists and commuters who spoke on the matter said it was unreasonable to subject people to such suffering because of  an activity holding inside the stadium.

Johnbull Monye, a tricycle operator lamented the sad experience, wondering why security operatives should  close one lane of a very busy road which is already experiencing more traffic due to the yuletide.

According to him, it was good to have  carol but not to subject people to hardship.

Meanwhile, the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed optimism that the coming year 2022 would be a better year for Nigerians.

Okowa flanked by his wife, Dame Edith,  at the festival of nine lessons and carols  said that the year 2021 was a challenging year for all.

He urged Christians to renew their hope in God as he alone could turn around the fortunes of the people.

“Let me wish everyone here a merry Christmas and a happy new year in advance.

“There is no doubt that the year has been very tough for so many Nigerians and Deltans are not excluded from the challenges of the nation.

“But there is hope for tomorrow and all I pray and ask of you is to stay faithful in God and to realise that in Christ Jesus we have hope for tomorrow.

“I thank you for coming to this event because in all things we have to give thanks to God and it is in an occasion like this that we appreciate God for our lives.

  • Enugu wades into Akpugo/Amagunze communal land dispute

Enugu wades into Akpugo/Amagunze communal land dispute

Enugu State government has waded into the boundary dispute between the neigbouring communities of Akpugo in Nkanu West Council Area and Amagunze in Nkanu East LGA.

The government urged members of the communities to maintain peace while it looked into the dispute.

In the disputed land, Ndiuno and Ndiagu Akpugo communities are claiming to own the land where Nkanu East headquarters is located and beyond and up to the Atavo River, while Amagunze’s claim line is up to Ezemaba Stream towards Akpugo.

Moved by the agitations generated by dispute, the Enugu State Boundary Committee headed by the Deputy Governor of the state, Hon. Mrs. Cecelia Ezeilo, paid an on-the-spot visit to the disputed land, where a factory was being constructed.

The deputy governor, represented by the secretary of the boundary committee, Dr. Solomon Ejim, charged the people of the two communities to remain in peace, saying that they are brothers and sisters who share many things in common.

Addressing traditional rulers and some leaders of Ndiuno Uwani Akpugo, Ndiagu Uwani Akpugo and Amagunze communities who were present to indicate their respective claim lines, Mrs. Ezeilo reminded them that it was vanity for them to kill themselves over land, saying that if anyone who loses his life or gets serious injuries, the land cannot bring them back to life.

“We are here for on-the-ground assessment. We want to bring a lasting peace to this whole issue.

“We’re here for peace to identify the claim lines of the land so that when we get back to the office, we will do a thorough job and return back for a proper field work and demarcation. So, while this process is going on, we charge you to maintain peace and order and allow the state government to look into the claims,” the deputy governor said.

The three traditional rulers representing the three communities, Igwe Amuchi Nwodo, Ndiuno Akpugo; Igwe Christopher Nwafor, Amagunze and Igwe Innocent Ogbodo, Ndiagu Akpugo, in their separate remarks, expressed confidence in the ability of the state government to resolve the dispute, saying they were not expecting anything less than a peaceful resolution of the matter “because our governor is a man of peace.”

Ugwuanyi hands over renovated burnt Enugu INEC office

Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Friday, inaugurated and handed over the newly renovated Enugu State Office of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), burnt by unknown gunmen some months ago.

Recall that following  the unfortunate attack on INEC’s office in Enugu, Governor  Ugwuanyi inspected the facility and promised that his administration would  rebuild the burnt structure to enable the electoral body to continue to discharge its constitutional duties efficiently and effectively in the state.

  • Alleged N75m fraud: Court orders arrest of Imo Assembly’s Deputy Speaker

Alleged N75m fraud: Court orders arrest of Imo Assembly’s Deputy Speaker

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Jabi, Abuja has issued an arrest warrant against the Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu, over his alleged involvement in a N75million fraud.

Justice Charles Agbaza, in a ruling yesterday, directed the Commander of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) headquarters, Abuja to execute the arrest warrant so issued.

Justice Agbaza issued the order following Iwuanyanwu’s failure to appear in court to answer to the four-count charge filed against him by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

In the charge marked: CR/230/201, Iwuanyanwu and a firm, Sungold Estate Ltd, were alleged to have defrauded Wanogan Farm Ltd to the tune of N75million by allegedly making dishonest and fraudulent claims in respect of a property known as “Heroes Place, Plot 145, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse 2, Abuja.”

At the mention of the case yesterday, Iwuanyanwu was absent in court. But, his lawyer, Nabal Ominigbo, apologised for his absence.

Ominigbo, who claimed that his client was suffering from some health challenges, was unable to present any medical report to support his claim when the judge requested for one.

Angered by Ominigbo’s inability to support his claim with material evidence, Justice Agbaza noted that the defendant was acting as if he was above the law, having been served with hearing notices on three occasions, yet he failed to attend court.

In his submission, prosecuting lawyer, Umoh Inah Inah, recalled that following Iwuanyanwu’s absence on the last date, the court issued a bench warrant against the defendant, who was later arrested at the Owerri airport by Inspector Godwin Tanko of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

Inah said the intervention of security personnel attached to Imo State Government House frustrated the defendant’s arrest and movement to Abuja for the purpose of his being arraigned.

He prayed the court for a fresh arrest warrant to be directed at the Commander of the IRT, Abuja for easy execution.

Ominigbo said he was not opposed to the prosecution’s application for a fresh arrest warrant, but prayed the court to be afforded one more opportunity to produce the defendant in court on the next adjourned date, failing which the arrest warrant could be activated.

Ruling, Justice Agbaza rejected Ominigbo’s prayer and noted that Iwuanyanwu’s continued absence was disrespectful of the court, adding that no court allows such impudence.

He then adjourned till January 13, 2022 for arraignment.

  • Bayelsa APC files appeal at Supreme Court

Bayelsa APC files appeal at Supreme Court

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has filed a Notice of Appeal and Stay of Execution on the July 30, 2021 order of the state High Court stopping the party from conducting the ward, local government and state congresses.

Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa, presided over by Justice Enekinimi Uzaka, yesterday adjourned hearing on the interim injunction granted some aggrieved members of the APC: Ompadec Victor, Esuenifen Obi and Seimiegha Ebobofe, pending the appeal filed by the party against the ruling of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the Supreme Court.

At the sitting of the state High Court, counsel for the APC, Samuel Somiari (SAN), told the court about the party’s Motion on Notice and Stay of Execution filed at the Supreme Court, saying the court could no longer adjudicate on the matter.

The lawyer also pointed out that the case was a continuum and not a new one, hence it should not impose a fait accompli on the court.

In his ruling, Justice Uzaka said based on dignity of the processes and the superiority of the courts, he agreed to adjourn the case till February 3, 2022 for parties in the suit to report to the court on the outcome of the appeal filed by the APC at the Supreme Court.

“We have reached the Supreme Court. The High Court should await the outcome of the Supreme Court. It is to pause and go to the Supreme Court,” he told the court.

In his submission, Perekedou Fawei Esq, counsel for the claimants: Ompadec Victor, Esuenifen Obi and Seimiegha Ebobofe, argued that the state High Court had given an order and irrespective of the party’s position, the order must be obeyed.

He said the defendants should not be allowed to flagrantly abuse the order of the court.

He also urged the state High Court to protect its integrity as against the alleged attempt by the APC to abuse it.

The state High Court in Yenagoa on July 30 issued an interim order against the APC to stop the conduct of the ward, local government and state congresses.

An appeal filed by the APC at the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, also failed, as it was thrown out for lack of merit.
