Diri, NDDC chief hail security agencies

By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt with agency reports

Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri yesterday in Yenagoa hailed security agencies for rescuing an expatriate kidnapped by gunmen.

He gave the commendation in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi.

The governor said the rescue of the expatriate, an employee of PAACHE Construction Ltd., showed resilience and professionalism on the part of the security operatives.

“The government is grateful; the security agencies ensured swift response and their effort yielded immediate result,’’ he said.

Diri reiterated government’s commitment at ensuring adequate protection of lives and property.

“Our government has zero tolerance for crime and violence. We shall never tolerate crime,’’’ he said.

The governor urged security agencies to trail members of the kidnap gang who might have escaped with bullet wounds during the rescue mission.

He cautioned community leaders against harbouring criminals or providing care for those injured while committing crime.

“As good citizens, we need to support security agencies with intelligence to tackle crime more effectively,’’ he said.

The governor urged investors and residents to go about their businesses without fear, saying: “We are committed to ensuring your safety and security.’’

The Special Adviser on Youth to the Interim Administrator of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Udengs Eradiri, has condemned the kidnapping of the expatriate.

He, however, hailed security agents, who immediately intervened, intercepted the kidnappers and rescued the victim.

Eradiri, in a statement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, described the act as sad, barbaric and a huge setback to the developmental aspirations of Bayelsa State and Niger Delta.

One of the protesters, Pronto Justice, said two persons were severely injured and three still missing.

Justice claimed extra-judicial killings of indigenes and residents are rampant in the area calling on relevant authorities to wade in.

He alleged that the rampant killings of indigenes were perpetrated by the aides of the prominent politician and businessman who had been oppressing the people because they were opposed to the way he was running a surveillance contract of an oil company in the area.

Justice vowed that the protesters would continue to occupy the area and shut down commercial and economic activities until government come to investigate the incessant killings because of vested interest of one man.

He said: “Six persons were in a commercial boat to sell their water snails in a neighboring community when a gunboat, allegedly owned by the contractor, pulled up on the sea and started shooting indiscriminately.

He alleged that the armed men in the gunboat attempted to kidnap the occupants of the commercial boat and in the process, the deceased and two other persons jumped into the water in order to escape them.

He claimed that other three remaining occupants in the boat, who could not jump out of the boat, were beaten to a pulp.

“We are hereby calling on the Douye Diri-led government to wade in the matter to help the community. We don’t know the whereabouts of the remaining two persons.

Community leader Chief Joseph Bumo said he and other community chiefs joined the protest because the killing of Major was one incident too many.

He said: “I represent the chiefs and all the people of Igbomotoru kingdom.  The oil company and the surveillance company owned by a prominent politician have been suffering the people for a long time. How long can parents and community leaders close their eyes and see people dying?

Vigilante kills football player in Delta

A member of the Agbarho Task Force vigilante has shot dead a local football player, identified simply as Ogaga, in Agbarho, Ughelli North council area of Delta state.

Unconfirmed reports claim that Ogaga, 25, who was among other young men playing football close to the palace, was shot for trespassing into the palace of the Agbarho monarch.

Though details of the incident were sketchy, it was learnt that in the course of the football match, the ball was mistakenly played into the palace premises.

The victim reportedly went to get the ball, but ended up been shot with a pump action rifle by the suspect.

However, other reports claim that there was an altercation between the victim (a regular face at the palace) and the suspect, before the ugly incident.

The Nation understands that there is a lingering kingship battle, that led to a protest, barely two weeks ago by traditional chiefs of Agbarho Kingdom, against an alleged imposition of a traditional ruler on the people.

Whether Friday’s killing is connected to the kingship tussle could not be ascertained.

Spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, but noted that there was no football in the picture.

“They all stay in the palace. I think they know themselves. There is nothing like ball. They were around the palace and they had little disagreement. That was what led to the shooting,” Edafe said.

He added that the suspect is in police custody.

  • Abia lawmaker Ichita raises the alarm over secret trial plot

Abia lawmaker Ichita raises the alarm over secret trial plot

The member representing Aba South State Constituency in Abia State House of Assembly,  Obinna Ichita has raised alarm over plot by the state government to try him secretly in court.

Ichita who was elected under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in a statement claimed that the suit before a High Court in the state with suit no. A/182/2021 was instituted against him by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Barr. Charles Esonu while he (Esonu) was the Special Assistant to the Governor of the state on Special Duties at the time the suit was instituted against him.

Ichita in a chat with our correspondent stated that his crime was his continued outcry on the deplorable nature of roads in his constituency which he said the state government has used every means to stop him from, but have hit brick walls.

“We received strong and credible intelligence information that there was a secret suit filed against me by the Abia State Commissioner For Youths Development, Barr. Charles Esonu in a suit no. A/182/2021 and his statement of claim, he said that he was the Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties.

“He is praying the court to make an order for me not to talk about the state of roads in my constituency and for me to pay him N200m for the damages that he incurred as a result of my talking about the state of roads in my constituency.

“The main thing is that I was not served. My office is known in the House of Assembly and my constituency office is also known, but I wasn’t served.

“They went and told the judge that they made application for substituted service; that they were going to serve me at the constituency office which the court granted.

“But instead of serving me at the address, they went and hid the document elsewhere, where somebody discovered it and notified us. Our lawyers have confirmed that and have taken the necessary steps in that regards.

“They also want the court to order me to pay them 200 Million Naira as damages for talking about bad roads in Aba south, the constituency I was elected to represent.

“The suit was filed by Charles Esonu, Abia State Commissioner for Youths, he listed the Abia State Commissioner for Trade and Investment as one of his witnesses.

“It is interesting that instead of utilizing the money (over 56 Million US dollars ) that Abia State government received from the World Bank for flood mitigation project in Aba, Abia State government officials are secretly asking the High Court of Abia State to order me to stop talking about abandoned and dilapidated roads in my constituency.”

On whether the suit against him will affect his legislative duties, Hon. Ichita said that would not be possible. “My duty (as a lawmaker) is provided for by the constitution which I know is superior to other laws in Nigeria.

“This cannot deter me because when we talk about the state of our roads, it is not politics, but reality. You cannot access any of those road projects that made the World Bank release $56million intervention to the state.

“There is no single road in my constituency that is accessible; from Port Harcourt to Ohanku, Obohia, Omuma, Ihieorji, Uratta.”

Reacting to the claims by the APGA lawmaker, the Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu; Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka said “I am not aware of any such plans by the State Government.

“I speak for the Governor of Abia State and I know for sure that no such thing is on his mind. It even sounds ridiculous to try a member of the House of Assembly for some so called outspokenness?

“Try him under what law? I am a lawyer and the whole thing sounds extremely outlandish and nonsensical.”

  • Bayelsa: World Bank-assisted agency yet to settle 400 beneficiaries after two years

Bayelsa: World Bank-assisted agency yet to settle 400 beneficiaries after two years

Over two years after graduating from various vocational skills training organised by the World Bank-assisted State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) Project in Bayelsa State, more than 400 beneficiaries are still groaning under anxiety and hardship without their starter packs.

The candidates underwent between two and three years of training at different centres in the state, including Government Science and Technical College, Okaka, and the Government Craft Development Centres in Sagbama, Adagbabiri, Ayakoro, Polaku and Nembe.

They were trained in trades such as cosmetology, welding, plumbing, electrical installation, diesel/outboard engine repairs, fashion and designing, catering, hair dressing, computer craft and business education, among others.

It was learnt on Friday that the over N50m worth of starter packs were acquired and handed over to the Bayelsa State Government.

The starter packs are said to be allegedly kept in some warehouses within the Yenagoa metropolis and some of the items are losing value as a result of exposure to the impact of weather.

Some of the beneficiaries complained in separate interviews that they were frustrated by the delay in the release of the starter packs after attending verification exercises where their hopes were raised.

According to them, the costs of the tools and equipment for their various vocations are exorbitant in the market and they cannot afford it.

One of the graduates, Ebi Clement, who trained on hair dressing and cosmetology, said the inability of the state government through the Ministry of Education to give them the starter packs had made things difficult for her.

She said: “I trained at Sagbama for two years, and it has not been easy for me without the starter pack. They (government) promised that they would give us starter packs after the training.

“Since we finished the training, we have been waiting for the government to give us our starter packs, but they have not given us. We cannot buy them in the market because they are very expensive.”

Another beneficiary, Timi Graham, who trained in electrical installation and maintenance, said: “I finished training in 2019. Since we finished the training, we have not received our items of empowerment because they promised they would give us and we were happy.

“They called us for verification last year, they interviewed and asked us questions on our trades and everything was concluded. They said they will give us the items as soon as possible, but till now we have not seen anything.”

  • Wike won’t abandon projects, debts, says Rivers SSG

Wike won’t abandon projects, debts, says Rivers SSG

The Secretary to Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo has assured that the state Governor, Nyesom Wike, will not abandon any project to his successor.

The SSG said Wike had demonstrated experience, competence and courage in implementing the principles of good governance and was determined to leave behind a worthy legacy for future generations.

He spoke when members of the Ikwerre (Iwhuruohna) Journalistic Forum visited him in his office.

Danagogo further assured them that no debt would also be left behind by the Wike’s administration for the next government.

He said: “The Governor Wike I know will not leave behind abandoned projects, and he will not leave debts. He is doing many projects but all will be finished before the end of his tenure. This is because he is experienced in governance, and he has the capacity and courage to do what is right. All projects are cash-backed and targeted to be completed.

“The Trans-Kalabari Road for instance has five segments.  The governor has awarded the first segment with N14bn set aside for completion of the segment. As such, the contractor does not have any excuses than to deliver the project at the set time.

“This strategy was successfully implemented in the Sakpenwa Bori – Kono  Road. The next phase of the road, the Bori – Kono section, is also now under construction.  Anyone projecting the failure of the Trans-Kalabari Road is an enemy of our progress.

“Following the kidnap of one of the expatriates working with the contracting firm of the Trans-Kalabari Road, the Deputy Governor met with political and traditional stakeholders of Kalabari extraction to ensure all community members work towards the release of the worker. We thank God for the release of the worker.”

The SSG urged the journalists to stay united and to enjoy a truly prosperous state, adding that nepotism or tribalism was capable of frustrating the progress in the state.

The President, Ikwerre Journalists Forum, Elder Mike Iwezor, said the visit was to encourage those, who were supporting Wike.
