Court restrains Abia govt from appointing new judges

A Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, has restrained the Abia State Government and her agents from engaging in a fresh process for the appointment of new Judges in the state.

The order followed an application brought by two litigants, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu, questioning the Abia State government’s engaging in a fresh process in the appointment of 10 new Judges in the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the plaintiffs were shortlisted by the Abia State Judicial Service Commission in 2022 for appointment as Judges in the Abia State Judiciary, and on October 17, 2022, they attended an interview conducted by the National Judicial Council.

The candidates were equally screened by the Department of State Security (DSS) thereafter and were awaiting official announcement as judges before the government reportedly jettisoned the exercise and began a fresh process, the reason courts in the state are lacking judges.

Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu had for themselves and on behalf of the 2022 shortlisted candidates for the appointment as Judges of Abia State Judiciary, dragged the Abia State Judicial Service Commission, the Chief Judge of the state, the Attorney General and eight others before the court.

The plaintiffs sought an interim order of the court directing the plaintiffs and the defendants to maintain the status quo in the suit pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction in the suit.

Plaintiffs equally prayed the court for any further order or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.

After reading the affidavit of urgency in support of the motion ex parte deposed to by the 1st plaintiff, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne; and after hearing O.O. Nkume, counsel for the plaintiffs move in terms of the motion paper, the court presided by Justice S. B. Onu ordered that all the parties to the action shall maintain status quo ante bellum pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs motion on notice.

Our correspondent gathered that the court also ordered that the plaintiffs shall enter into undertaking as to damages in the event that the order ought not to have been made.

Speaking after the court ruling, Amadi U.U, who described himself as a concerned citizen of Abia State, said until the process of appointment of judges was insulated from executive interference and influence, the administration of justice will be in jeopardy.

LP Supreme Court victory: Triumph of will of people over will of few — Otti

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, says he received with excitement, the April 4, judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which sacked the Julius Abure led National Working Committee of the Labour Party (LP), paving the way for the return of peace, unity and order in the party.

Otti said the leadership of the party had been vindicated by the Supreme Court judgement, which rightly held that Abure and his NWC had since “outlived their tenure,” which informed the constitution of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital, in 2024.

According to the governor, “I’m not just happy with the judgement; I also celebrate that the highest court in the land has vindicated our position that the tenure of the Abure-led National Working Committee had since expired.

“This sound judgement by the Supreme Court was the basis for our decision to set up the National Caretaker Committee led by distinguished Senators Esther Nenadi Usman as Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as secretary” he said.

Otti added that the vision behind the setting up of the committee was to foster peace and unity, while strengthening the party to consolidate on the gains made in the last election, assuring that he and other leaders of the party would ensure that the party is reformed at all levels to become a more formidable political platform with the requisite structures and democratic credentials to offer effective and people-oriented leadership.

Otti commended the Supreme Court for its sound judgement which didn’t just meet the popular expectations of genuine Labour Party members in particular and Nigerians in general but one that would contribute in deepening democracy and sustaining good governance.

The Abia governor commended all those who kept faith and remained calm and peaceful while the battle for the soul of the party lasted, including the NLC, TUC, Party Stakeholders and supporters and all men and women of good conscience across the nation.

Otti called on the former national officers of the party to join hands with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of the party to move the party forward, assuring that he and other leaders of the party are committed to building an all-inclusive party devoid of discrimination and favoritism.

Ekpo performs Ibesikpo CNG Plant groundbreaking

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, on Friday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for Guelph Gas Limited’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mother Station in Ibesikpo, Akwa Ibom State, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to a cleaner and more equitable energy future.

According to a statement by his spokesperson, Louis Ibah, the Minister described CNG as a cleaner alternative to conventional fuels, noting its potential to significantly cut carbon emissions and enhance environmental health.

Ekpo commended Guelph Gas Limited for investing in the project, calling it a sign of growing investor confidence in Nigeria’s gas industry.

He also highlighted the government’s efforts in creating a supportive climate for private sector involvement as key to unlocking the sector’s full potential.

Ekpo assured that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) will provide necessary support to ensure the project’s success and similar initiatives across the country. These efforts aim to significantly boost the country’s income earnings, stimulate economic growth, and generate vast employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.

The Minister also ommended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for supporting investments that drive economic growth and create employment opportunities for citizens.

“As someone who hails from this great state, I have seen firsthand the dedication of our people to development and innovation,” Ekpo said. “With its strategic location, resource wealth, and commitment to development, the state is positioned to be a key hub in Nigeria’s gas revolution,” he said.

Managing Director of Guelph Gas Limited, Emmanuel Bassey, thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting initiatives and policies like the Gas to Prosperity and Decade of Gas.

These policies have encouraged companies like Guelph Gas Limited to invest in the gas sector as Nigeria seeks to become a gas-powered economy. Bassey also thanked Ekpo for his support in bringing the CNG project to fruition.

The three million standard cubic feet per day CNG mother station project in Ibesikpo, Akwa Ibom State, aims to supply natural gas via CNG to commercial and industrial customers in the South-South and South-Eastern parts of the country not currently connected to the country’s gas pipeline network.

Bassey said the company was wrapping up it’s pre-development phase and had received the License to Establish, License to Construct, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval, building approval, and the Head of Terms, and also expect to sign the Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) before the end of the month, with offtake agreements already in place.

He promised to deliver the project on schedule and to specification and assured the host community that they would not be left out in terms of social corporate responsibility while seeking their support and cooperation.

  • Activists blast Obi over criticism of economic policies

Activists blast Obi over criticism of economic policies

The Forum of Economic Rights Activists (FERA) has criticised the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his criticism of the economic policies of the current administration.

In a statement by its President, Dr. Moses Okino, the FERA expressed disappointment with Obi’s recent appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where he made statements about the current administration’s economic progress.

FERA argued that Obi’s criticism of the government’s reforms lacked substance as he failed to offer viable alternatives.

The group also disputed Obi’s claim that corruption has not been adequately addressed, citing the removal of the petrol subsidy as a significant step in combating corruption.

The statement further accused Obi of attempting to rewrite his history as a Governor, highlighting his alleged maltreatment of non-indigenous residents in Anambra State and exclusionary policies.

FERA cautioned Nigerians against believing Obi’s “rants” and advised him to explore alternative means of seeking relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group predicted that Obi would perform poorly in the upcoming elections.

“The Forum of Economic Rights Activists (FERA) is however not surprised at Peter Obi’s posturing, which we believe is aimed at rewriting his history as the most terrible governor to

have presided over Anambra State,” the statement added.

“In case he has forgotten, he superintended the deportation of other ethnic nationals from Anambra State, he only offered

compensation to persons of his ethnic stock in the aftermath of a fire that ravaged a market in

the state, excluded persons from other south-eastern states from his state’s civil service, and

only patronized people of his denomination for government contracts.

“These anomalies constitute Peter Obi’s vision of what he wanted to do to Nigeria had the electorates been dumb enough to put him in the Presidential Villa.

“Our counsel to those who still believe the rants of the Labour Party’s candidate is for them to

step back and critically assess the situation.

“It then becomes obvious that Peter Obi is no longer able to brand himself as a businessman, having run his enterprises aground and neither can he be correctly described as a politician anymore since he has done his best to destroy the Labour Party – the late Doyin Okupke gifted Nigerians the revelation that Peter Obi only

used the Labour Party as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which goes to confirm that he would have simply used Nigeria as his ATM to revive his fledging fortunes.

“It is on this note that we caution Peter Obi to explore other options for seeking relevance ahead of the 2027 General Elections and stop his irresponsible attempt at revisionism, which has exposed his desperation.

“We tell him confidently that should any political party be careless enough to allocate him a presidential ticket for 2027, he would poll even lesser than he did in 2023 because Nigerians have seen through him.”

  • LG autonomy: Can ICPC’s ACPPLG effect positive change in local governance?

LG autonomy: Can ICPC’s ACPPLG effect positive change in local governance?

    • By Victor Agi

On the 11th of July 2024, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a landmark ruling granting financial autonomy to local governments. The judgment effectively freed local government areas (LGAs) from the longstanding control of state governments. This means funds allocated to LGAs are disbursed directly to council chairmen.

But more than eight months after the ruling, the implementation process has encountered significant challenges, which only point to the corporate governance deficit in the administration of local government in Nigeria, and the urgent need for a robust framework to ensure accountability, transparency, and efficient financial management.

The issue of financial mismanagement at the local government level is not new. For decades, state governments have wielded excessive control over local government finances, often diverting resources meant for grassroots development. This has led to a history of stunted development, abandoned projects, and widespread disillusionment among citizens who continue to demand better services from their local councils.

Data show that in 16 years (2007-2023), state governments collected over N23.14 trillion meant for the local government areas in their states. With the removal of fuel subsidies, allocation to local governments continues to increase, with the 774 LGAs sharing over N3 trillion in 2024 alone. As the funds to LGAs increase, the perennial issue of financial mismanagement lurks.

To address these challenges earlier on, the federal government established a 10-man committee chaired by the Secretary the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, CON, to oversee the implementation process and finalize the necessary administrative and technical procedures.

However, structural inefficiencies, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and resistance from vested interests have appeared to slow down progress. While financial autonomy should, in theory, enable local governments to plan and execute their own budgets without undue interference, the reality on the ground is that financial mismanagement and lack of accountability remain a problem.

Given these initial setbacks, the Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments (ACPPLG), initiated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is both timely and necessary. The program aims to create awareness and build capacity for financial management at the local government level, ensuring that officials are well-equipped to handle public funds responsibly.

It also seeks to promote transparency by advocating for proactive financial disclosure, making it easier for citizens and oversight bodies to track spending. Additionally, the initiative includes the development of governance monitoring tools to measure compliance with best practices and improve service delivery. It is believed that these measures, when implemented, will help local governments to manage their resources more effectively and restore public trust in their ability to serve the people.

For this initiative to succeed, stakeholders across various sectors must rally behind the ACPPLG. The federal government must play a crucial role in providing the necessary technical and institutional support to ensure compliance with financial management regulations. State governments, despite having lost their grip on local government finances, should recognize the broader benefits of effective grassroots governance and support the transition rather than resist it.

Civil society organizations and the media have a crucial role to play in monitoring and reporting compliance with financial transparency mechanisms, ensuring that local councils remain accountable to the people. Equally important is the responsibility of local government officials themselves to embrace the principles of accountability and public service integrity, as this will ultimately determine the success of these reforms.

The real test of the Supreme Court judgement lies in how well local governments manage their newfound financial independence. Without proper oversight, transparency, and accountability mechanisms, there is a risk that financial autonomy could simply lead to a new era of unchecked corruption at the local level. This is why the ACPPLG is a critical intervention at this juncture.

On Thursday, the 3rd of April, the ICPC, alongside its technical partner, the Center for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) will be launching the ACPPLG, and it is time all stakeholders unite to support this initiative. This is because the success of local government financial autonomy is not just about transferring funds directly; it is about ensuring that these funds are used judiciously to improve the lives of the people.

ERA applauds Tinubu’s NNPC shakeup, demands probe of fake refinery deals

The Energy Reforms Advocates (ERA) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decision to remove Mele Kyari as the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.

In a statement on Wednesday, Abdulkadri Isah, president of ERA, described the move as a courageous step toward reforming Nigeria’s oil sector and tackling entrenched corruption.

He said Kyari’s removal would allow a full investigation into alleged fraudulent refinery projects under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“The dismissal of Mele Kyari signals a new dawn in our nation’s commitment to eradicating corruption in the oil and gas sector. We commend President Tinubu for demonstrating the political will to confront these challenges head-on,” Isah said.

He urged the newly appointed leadership of the NNPC to prioritise an audit of past projects and ensure accountability in the sector.

“The probe into fake refinery projects must be swift and thorough. Nigerians deserve to know how billions of dollars were allocated to non-existent or uncompleted projects while the country continued to rely on fuel imports,” he stated.

ERA called on relevant anti-corruption agencies to support the process, warning that failure to expose past mismanagement would hinder any meaningful reform.

“This investigation should not end with a change in leadership. There must be consequences for those who mismanaged funds and deceived Nigerians. The government must set a precedent that corruption will no longer be tolerated,” Isah added.

The group also expressed optimism that under fresh leadership, the NNPC could regain public trust and reposition itself as a driver of economic growth.

“With competent leadership, the NNPC can finally fulfill its mandate. We expect reforms that will boost local refining capacity, attract investment, and ultimately reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products,” the statement read.

Kyari’s removal was part of a broader shake-up of NNPC’s board, with former Shell executive Bashir Bayo Ojulari appointed as the new GCEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

The restructuring aligns with the government’s vision of revitalising the oil sector and increasing Nigeria’s crude oil production and refining capacity.

  • Val Ozigbo best bet for Anambra APC gov ticket

Val Ozigbo best bet for Anambra APC gov ticket

    By Dr Josef Umunnakwe Onoh

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) prepares for the decisive April 5 primary in Anambra State, one truth stands clear: the stakes have never been higher. For the party and for Anambra, this election is not just another contest — it is an opportunity to rewrite the political narrative of the South East, to consolidate the progressive ideals heralded by President Bola Tinubu, and to prove that the APC is ready to govern with credibility and competence in regions where it once struggled.

The Anambra governorship election in November 2025 is not an ordinary poll. It is the last off-cycle gubernatorial election before the 2027 general election. It is the litmus test of APC’s growth in the South East and a referendum on the party’s ability to present viable, unifying leadership beyond its traditional base. This is why the APC must field its strongest, most acceptable, and most strategic candidate. That candidate is Valentine Ozigbo.

It’s true that all the aspirants have best interests for Anambra state but in my consideration of what is the best interest for my party, the APC, Val Ozigbo meets my admiration.

Speculations have been rife that Ozigbo is a mole for Mr. Obi of the Labour Party, but I disagree with the allegation. It’s more like suggesting If there are mole for Mr. Obi, they are better found in the states that Mr. Obi won during the 2023 election. Ozigbo’s anticipated victory in the November Anambra governorship election cannot guarantee significant votes for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

In as much as I hold H.E Gov C.C Soludo in very high regards, sadly, he is not a member of my political party, the APC, and in politics, loyalty to party comes first. Now that all eyes on the APC gubernatorial ticket for the Anambra state election, Val Ozigbo has had memberships of the PDP, LP, and now he is in the APC. He knows the terrain, ran for the elections, and I cannot say much for the rest of his rivals in the APC.

For those unfamiliar with Ozigbo’s remarkable journey, he is a man who rose from humble beginnings in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area, to become a distinguished corporate leader, a philanthropist, and a unifier From excelling as the best graduating student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to leading one of Nigeria’s most iconic corporations, Transcorp Plc, Ozigbo’s story is one of brilliance, tenacity, and integrity.

As Managing Director of Transcorp Hilton Abuja, he oversaw a $100 million renovation that transformed the hotel into Africa’s leading business destination. As President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc, he led a conglomerate with interests in hospitality, power, and energy, championing innovation and corporate excellence. But more importantly, he has consistently translated personal success into public service through philanthropy, mentorship, and community development.

Ozigbo’s foray into politics in 2020 was no accident. It was a deliberate decision to leave the corporate boardroom and step into the public square—to answer a higher call of service. In 2021, running under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ozigbo emerged as a formidable contender, coming a close second despite running against the combined might of the federal and state governments, entrenched political structures, and financial odds.

Since then, he has remained at the center of Anambra’s political discourse. He played a crucial leadership role in the Obidient Movement of 2023, galvanising the youth and the middle-class electorate across the southeast. His recent decision to join the APC has opened a new chapter—bringing with him not only his formidable political structure but also the credibility and goodwill he commands across political divides.

In a state where zoning, religious alignment, and public acceptability are decisive factors, Ozigbo scores highest among all APC aspirants. According to a confidential evaluation document by the APC, he ranks first, scoring 74% in key metrics including zoning, religious support, and public popularity—outperforming the incumbent governor, Charles Soludo, in recent grassroots polls.

Ozigbo is not a transactional politician. He is a bridge-builder. His campaign is not about party supremacy—it is about people-centred leadership. He has built relationships across PDP, Labour Party, APGA, and civil society. His defection to APC has created a rallying point that could unify previously fragmented political interests in Anambra. If APC is serious about delivering a historic victory in the South East, it must embrace this unifier.

Beyond numbers and strategy, Ozigbo is a leader of ideas. His vision for Anambra is well-documented—a clear economic plan anchored on digital economy, youth empowerment, security, and infrastructure. His investments in young people speak volumes: through the VCO Foundation, he has committed ₦400 million in partnership with Decagon Institute to sponsor 100 Anambra youths in software engineering, providing a pathway out of unemployment and poverty.

Critically, Ozigbo possesses something his rivals lack—an expansive grassroots movement and the ability to transcend party lines. In the 2021 election, he outperformed APC’s own candidate. Today, he has brought to the APC not only his capacity but also the goodwill of thousands who believe in his brand of leadership.

His campaign is self-funded, removing the burden of financial dependency from the party. His cosmopolitan corporate background, vast diaspora network, and clean political record set him apart in a field often riddled with godfatherism and mediocrity.

As APC looks towards November, the party must decide whether it wants a candidate who can win the primary—or a candidate who can win the election. The difference matters.

The people of Anambra are yearning for a new kind of leadership—one that transcends slogans and symbols, and delivers results. Valentine Ozigbo embodies that aspiration. For APC, he is not only the safest bet; he is the smartest one.

Mr. President, Aswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu believes in harvest of talents, not about lobbying or money. Therefore, now is the time for our party to help the President harvest one of the talents so that the APC can avert the crisis as it is being experienced in the PDP presently.

The road to Anambra’s redemption begins with the right choice on April 5. The APC has a rare chance to make history. That chance is Valentine Ozigbo.

Peace ambassador expresses concern over surge in violence in Edo, queries cow menace

Nigerian peace ambassador and rising artist, Sunday Ajakaiye, popularly known as Zunday, has expressed profound concern over the recent surge in violent incidents in Edo State, including the horrific attack on 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria in Uromi and the escalating kidnappings in Igarra.

Zunday, born in the historic Kukuruku Hills of Edo State, lamented the persistent kidnappings in Igarra, allegedly perpetrated by herdsmen who obstruct roads with cattle to execute their nefarious acts.

He emphasised the urgent need for authorities to investigate the ownership and interests behind these cattle and to implement stringent measures for the transportation of livestock to prevent further endangerment of innocent lives.

“We must ask ourselves: Who owns these cows? Whose interests do they serve? It’s imperative that we address these questions to tackle the root causes of these security challenges,” Zunday asserted.

In light of these distressing events, Zunday calls upon Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to prioritize the enhancement of the state’s security architecture.

He urges the governor to **implement comprehensive strategies that will restore public confidence and ensure the safety of all residents and travelers within the state.

“Our people need to believe in the security measures put in place to protect them. I implore Governor Okpebholo to take decisive action that will reassure the populace and deter those who seek to disrupt our peace,” Zunday stated.

While advocating for governmental intervention, Zunday also urged citizens not to resort to vigilante justice, emphasizing that such actions only exacerbate the cycle of violence.

He encouraged the public to channel their grievances through appropriate legal avenues and to demand accountability from those in positions of power.

“Taking the law into our own hands only leads to more chaos. We must trust in our institutions and hold our leaders accountable to ensure justice and security for all,” he added.

As a dedicated advocate for peace and unity, Zunday remains committed to using his platform to foster dialogue, promote understanding, and call for actions that will lead to a safer and more harmonious society.
