Developer disobeyed judicial panel order, Ariaria shop owners allege

    • Shops available for allocation, says firm chief

Traders of Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State under the Ariaria Allottee Traders Association (AATA) have accused the developer handling its remodelling, Blessed Henken International Limited, of disobeying the orders of the state Judicial Panel of Inquiry.

The firm, however, denied the allegation.

The six-man judicial panel of inquiry on the recovery of government properties, funds and related matters, set up by the state government, is headed by Justice Florence Duruoha-Igwe (rtd).

On January 19, it restrained the developer and the Commissioner for Trade and Investment Chimezie Ukaegbu from further sales or alienation of the remodelled stalls A/B/WWLS.

The order also restrained them from reallocating or selling the shops until Governor Alex Otti decides based on the panel’s interim report. The displaced Ariaria A-line traders stated that they were the original owners of the shops which were pulled down for new ones built by the contractor. In a petition to the governor, signed by its chairman Kingsley Achonu and secretary Ikem Uchendu, the association said the contractor also breached a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the exercise.

They said contrary to the agreement reached as contained in the MoU, the developer has continued to sell shops in the completed buildings to moneybags who convert them into warehous es instead of giving the former owners the right of first refusal.

The traders said they have lost huge sums of money due to non-compliance with the MoU, adding: “We request your Excellency to look into the issue of multiple allocations of between two to 16 shops to one individual when the majority of the original owners are yet to get a shop.

“Ariaria shops are meant for traders who are in the market to sell and not to be converted to warehouses.”

According to them, this month makes it three years since the project started as against three months, during which they were subjected to hardship that led to the death of many traders.

“We demand justice,” the traders said.

Managing Director of Blessed Henken International, Mr. Henry Okoroafor, denied the allegations. He said 85 per cent of original shop owners have paid and had shops allocated to them.

According to him, shops are available for allocation to those interested.

APC: recruitment of 4,000 teachers by Obaseki fraudulent

    • Allegations laughable, says PDP

A member of the Transition Committee of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Prince Kassim Afegbua, has described as fraudulent and deceitful, recruitment of 4,000 teachers by the outgoing Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Afegbua, former commissioner for Information, made the allegation yesterday in Benin.

He said the recruitment was an attempt to overload the system and set a booby trap for the incoming administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC.

But Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, described as laughable, the allegations levelled against the Obaseki administration.

Nehikhare, who is also a member of PDP’s Transition Committee, claimed Afegbua’s comments sought to undermine the recruitment of 4,000 dedicated teachers for Edo students.

He said: “These educators (4,000 teachers) are essential for advancing EdoBEST programme, which has made significant strides in improving educational standards in our state.’’

LG autonomy: Coalition accuses Soludo of working to subvert Supreme Court’s judgment

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) under the auspices of Save Nigerian Democracy Group (SNDG) has accused Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State of working to subvert the Supreme Court’s judgment granting financial autonomy to Local Government Areas (LGAs).

In a statement on Friday in Abuja, the group alleged that the decision by Soludo to encourage the Anambra State House of Assembly to enact a law that negates the spirit of the Supreme Court judgment amounted to an attack on the Constitution.

In the statement signed by its coordinator, Cornelius Ajagbe, SNDG claimed that it was gradually becoming a pattern with Soludo, who is accused of also disregarding an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court recognising Chief Edozie Njoku as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

SNDG argued the Soludo’s conduct was undemocratic and antagonistic of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s efforts at ensuring grassroots development by financially empowering Local Governments.

The group added: “Regrettably, Gov. Soludo, rather than face the insecurity issues in Anambra, has resorted to leading an ill crusade by sitting on appeal over a Supreme Court Judgment on LG autonomy.

“It is truly baffling that Gov. Soludo feels that the third tier of government should not exist. More worrisome is the fact that he could muster the courage to state that granting financial autonomy to the LG would lead to chaos.

“Gov. Soludo’s self-concession and narcissistic demeanor are the reason why he sees himself as all-knowing. Hence, even the Supreme Court judgement should be subject to his pettiness. Soludo’s disdain for the Presidency is legendary.

“Perhaps, omniscient posture and grandstanding explain why he has wasted state resources in a fruitless attempt to rewrite the Supreme Court judgment on APGA leadership against Chief Edozie Njoku who has been serially and countlessly declared the rightful National Chairman of APGA.”

“Gov. Soludo’s inability to accept defeat on APGA leadership issue, tame his ego, and bind the brokenhearted, exposes him as a man who is in perpetual pursuit of selfish and self-serving interests.

“While the global economy isn’t at its best, it is pertinent to note that President Tinubu willfully decided to take 10 percent from the federation account, whilst leaving the States with 90 percent.

“This is contrary to what we are used to before now. Ordinarily, this move should impel state governors to look away from the LG funds.

“Despite all these gestures by the Presidency, some governors have their eyes stuck on LG funds. This insatiable greed and the brazenness to bring down the law to achieve this impunity is what we are up against.

“The posters you see around many parts of Abuja, particularly at the Three Arms Zone, Maitama Roundabout, the Federal Secretariat, around Bannex Plaza, and Transcorp Hotel junction are a civil way to express our angst against the resolve of the governors to hold down the development at the LG.”

  • Cabinet reshuffle: Igbo youths hail Tinubu for retaining Tunji-Ojo

Cabinet reshuffle: Igbo youths hail Tinubu for retaining Tunji-Ojo

The Coalition of Southeast Youths (CSEYD), a leading pan-Igbo political pressure group, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for retaining Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Interior Minister.

The group had previously advocated for a cabinet reshuffle, specifically merging the Ministry of Police Affairs with the Ministry of Interior to enhance internal security and eliminate identity theft.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Coordinator of CSEYD, Wisdom Akunna, Tunji-Ojo’s leadership has transformed the Interior Ministry, with notable achievements in correctional centers, including improved aesthetics and inmate wellbeing.

The ministry has also recorded significant milestones, including a 50% increase in daily feeding allowance for inmates, clearance of fines and compensations worth #585million, and completion of ultra-modern factories in Borno and Abia states.

Additionally, the ministry has promoted over 60,000 paramilitary officers, established a functional pensions board, cleared a backlog of 204,333 passports, and developed state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters.

These accomplishments have strengthened national security, improved citizens’ confidence in the Immigration services, and eliminated identity theft.

The CSEYD has reiterated its call for President Tinubu to merge the Police Affairs ministry with the Interior Ministry to synchronize internal security architecture and increase budgetary allocations for greater productivity.

“We are however impressed with the fact that Mr President listened to the overwhelming opinion of Nigerians on the retention of Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Interior Minister based on the transformative leadership and the cocktail of achievements recorded by that Ministry under his watch.

    “For example, the correctional centres across the country have recorded significant improvement in both aesthetics and inmate wellbeing which is a paradigm shift from punitive to holistic rehabilitation. Response to challenges around these custodial centres have received prompt, definite and wholehearted attention;

    “In August alone, an approval of a 50% increase in daily feeding allowance per inmate was achieved while orchestrating the clearance of fines and compensations worth #585million for 4,068 inmates across the country as evidence in the push to strengthen our criminal justice system;

    “This year under review, with strong commitments to partnerships entered into by the Ministry through the Nigeria Correctional Services, an ultra modern furniture factory was completed at Borno state while a garments and shoes factory has been completed at Abia State;

“The Interior Ministry has also ended years of stagnation in the paramilitary services under its supervision by ensuring the promotion of over 60,000 senior and junior officers across the Immigration, Civil Defence and Immigration services. Also a functional Pensions Board has been established aligning paramilitary salaries with those of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“CSYED also notes that under the supervision of the Interior Ministry, there has been clearance of a backlog of 204,333 passports at the NIS, completion of state-of-the-art Data Center and Command and Control Center at the NIS headquarters for ease of visa and passport application, installation of E-gates at several airports across the country. All these red tires confidence in the Immigration services capability to meet citizens’ needs, fortifies national security and eliminates identity theft.

“We call on Mr President to once again reconsider our earlier recommendation for the merger of the Police Affairs ministry inorder to synchronize all our internal security architecture and improve on the budgetary allocations to the Interior Ministry inorder to ensure greater productivity”, the statement said.

Ex-minister urges Nigerian businesses to adopt Chinese networking approach

Former Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji has called on Nigerian businesses to adopt a social network-driven approach, taking cues from the Chinese Guanxi business culture, for increased business opportunities.

Nnaji, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Geometric Power Aba, Abia State, gave this advice at the opening of the 3-day Business Summit held at Amadeo Event Centre, Enugu with the theme: “Transposition of Interest in Service Delivery”.

The event was organised by GMD of the COPEN Group, Dr Ugochukwu Chime, under the corporate social expression through Barnabas Hope Foundation, to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and discussions on emerging business trends in Nigeria.

The former minister, who delivered a keynote speech at the event, explained that the Chinese social network-driven approach to doing business, also known as “Guanxi” emphasizes building strong personal relationships, leveraging social networks, and prioritizing trust and reciprocity, which usually lead to significant business opportunities.

He noted that such business approach among other things emphasised on personal relationships in building trust, loyalty, and familiarity with partners, suppliers, and clients, adding that it enhances social networks by leveraging connections through family, friends, alumni, and professional associations.

Nnaji added that one of the benefits of such approach was that it helps the individuals maintain dignity and reputation in business interactions as well as pioritizing collective interests over individual goals.

He added that such approaches usually lead to increased trust and cooperation; improved communication and efficiency; enhanced reputation and credibility; better access to market information and long-term partnerships and collaborations.

While appreciating the promotion of interactions as part of the objectives of the summit, which gives rise to ideas or creativity, Nnaji lamented the exodus of young professionals from Nigeria and advocated stakeholder capitalism as a more sustainable business model.

  • Rivers Ijaw blasts INC-led Okaba for taking sides in crisis, choosing ethnicity over justice, fairness

Rivers Ijaw blasts INC-led Okaba for taking sides in crisis, choosing ethnicity over justice, fairness

The Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress (RIPCO) on Wednesday faulted the recent position of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) led by Prof. Benjamin Okaba, saying Okaba betrayed his position by choosing to take sides in the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

In his recent statement, Okaba among other things portrayed the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, as a peacemaker; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the aggressor and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the enabler of the crisis.

Okaba, who claimed that though the Presidential peace accord was skewed to favour Wike, said Fubara met all the conditions for peace contained in the agreement.

He said within three weeks after the agreement, the 27 lawmakers defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing federal institutions of supporting the actions of Wike against Fubara.

But in an open letter on Wednesday, RIPCO faulted the claims of Okaba, saying the INC press release was laced with numerous falsehood and half truths.

The letter, which was signed by RIPCO’s Leader, Senator George Thompson Sekibo; Director-General, Dr. Rowland Sekibo and Secretary, Dr. Erastus Awortu, said Okaba’s approach had only succeeded in escalating the tension instead of calming it.

The letter said: “Rather than calming the tensions, the INC President’s approach appears to exacerbate the crisis in Rivers State. For reasons only known to him,
Professor Okaba has chosen to allow the situation to escalate further. His statements, marked by inconsistency and lack of clarity, leave us no choice but to correct the narrative for the benefit of the public.

“As his relatives and fellow Ijaw brothers under the INC umbrella, we feel responsible for ensuring that the public receives a more balanced and accurate understanding, especially given his failure to live up to the expectations of a leader and father figure for the Ijaw people of Nigeria”.

Knocking out all the claims of Okaba, RIPCO highlighted the half truths contained in Okaba’s statements and harped on the actions and utterances of Fubara that rubbished the whole essence of the presidential peace agreement.

The letter said: “First, the purported defection he mentioned was before the President’s intervention.

“Governor Siminalayi Fubara, after agreeing and signing the terms of the intervention agreement, gathered people in the government house the next morning, where they publicly condemned the president’s intervention as unconstitutional and attacked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the President.

“Governor Fubara, in a meeting with some Ijaw leaders from Bayelsa, declared that the document he signed was unconstitutional, that he signed it to keep the Assembly members floating, and that it was just a mere paper without legal backing.

“Thereafter, Governor Fubara sponsored some so-called elders and civil society to challenge the Presidential Intervention Peace Agreement in court and declined to uphold its contents. In
contrast, the Assembly members withdrew their matters and impeachment notices already
served on him in accordance with the terms of the Intervention Peace Agreement.

“Governor Fubara, in utter disregard of the truce, mobilised thugs and trucks in an attempt to demolish the residential quarters of the Assembly members, but for the timely intervention of security agents.

“In furtherance of his contempt of the agreement, Governor Fubara ignored the Assembly and continues to run the state without an Assembly including not laying the 2024 Budget to this day”.

The letter continued: ” In disregard of the truce, he refused to conduct local Government elections. He went ahead to set up Caretaker Committees for the LGAs even after the Supreme Court had made the decision on it. In furtherance of his arrogance, he did not send the names of the caretaker committee members to the Assembly for screening and confirmation.

“The governor’s attempt to conduct LG elections was only after the Supreme Court’s judgement on local Government autonomy. This made the purported elections run foul of all known democratic regulations. We can go on and on, but our attempt is not to expose him further for his fictitious claims”.

RIPCO in the letter insisted that Okaba’s statement was done in bad faith and mentioned instances, which Okaba betrayed his office and the principles of justice and fairness

The letter said: “The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress, foreseeing the potential for the political situation to deteriorate, took proactive steps to address the issue. On the 4th of June 2024, RIPCO sent a
delegation of 200 Ijaw sons and daughters, led by Senator Chief George Thompson Sekibo CON, to the INC headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

” This delegation met with the INC Executive, including President Benjamin Okaba, to discuss the deepening political crisis in Rivers State. RIPCO called for the INC’s intervention, as the
crisis had begun to divide the Ijaw people in Rivers State, with factions loyal to either Governor Fubara or Barrister Wike.

“We cautioned that if the INC took sides, it could lead to open conflict within the Ijaw community, reminding the leadership that not all Ijaw people could be expected to align with a single political party or faction within a political party.

“RIPCO also observed that inflammatory comments from Ijaw leaders outside of Rivers State have intensified the tensions rather than contributing to a peaceful resolution.

“We urged the INC to intervene and broker peace between Governor Fubara and Barrister Wike to prevent further political division among the Ijaw people in Rivers State.

“INC’s Initial Commitment to Peace In response to these concerns, the INC Executive, led by President Okaba, acknowledged the need for intervention. The INC leadership thanked the RIPCO delegation for their efforts to promote peace and committed to undertaking a peace mission in Rivers State.

” Professor Okaba personally promised to lead an INC delegation to meet with all factions involved at a round table and primarily bring all Ijaw sons and daughters together”.

The group said on June 13, 2024, the INC President fulfilled part of his commitment by visiting Rivers State, where he met with Ijaw factions loyal to Governor Fubara and those loyal to Barrister Wike, including RIPCO leadership, but the group said it doubted the sincerity of the gesture because Okaba came alone without members of his executive.

On their agreements, RIPCO said: “Okaba solicited that the RIPCO members maintain peace in Rivers State, even in the face of adversity.

“The INC President promised to lead a group of respected Ijaw statesmen to foster peace in Rivers State and address the crisis on two fronts. He would engage the Ijaw factions in Rivers State to unite the community. He would then initiate a roundtable discussion between Governor Fubara and Barrister
    Wike.

“All these efforts were expected to conclude before the end of July 2024.
Having reached these commendable agreements, the leadership of the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress is still waiting for Professor Okaba, the INC President, to follow through on his promise to convene the two crucial meetings aimed at securing peace between the two main Ijaw factions and between Governor Fubara and Bar Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister”.

Rivers Ijaw people said having failed to fulfill his promise of intervening in the matter, Okaba lacked the moral standing to pass a judgement on the matter.

RIPCO said: “Okaba’s premature condemnation of one party and open support of another undermine the principles of justice and fairness that the Ijaw people have always upheld.

“It is a murder of justice on the altar of ethnicity. It is stated that ‘he who comes to equity must come with clean hands’. It is pretty evident that Professor Okaba cannot adjudicate on a sensitive matter, such as this, because his hands are no longer clean.

“Therefore, we received the INC President Professor Okaba’s recent press release with great surprise and disappointment. Rather than advancing the peace process that he had previously committed to lead, the INC President has instead issued a public statement that not only condemns Barrister Wike but also places sole blame on him for the tensions in Rivers State. At the same time, Professor Okaba praises Governor Fubara as the leader pursuing a path of peace.

“This selective and inflammatory rhetoric starkly contrasts his earlier pledge to maintain neutrality and facilitate reconciliation. His actions appear to undermine the very principles of fairness and diplomacy that are critical for resolving the crisis.

“We believe that Professor Okaba, having failed to act as he initially promised, no longer holds the moral authority to pass judgment on this sensitive issue— particularly while the matter is still pending adjudication in his court.

“By prematurely condemning one party while openly supporting another, he compromises the core values of justice and impartiality that the Ijaw people have always championed.

“His behaviour represents a grave miscarriage of justice, where ethnic bias takes precedence over
fairness. As the saying goes, ‘he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,’ and it is clear that Professor Okaba’s hands are no longer clean. This raises serious concerns about his ability to lead a complex race, such as the Ijaw ethnic nationality, with the impartiality and integrity it demands”.

RIPCO insisted on its call for for fairness and unity in confronting the crisis rocking Rivers saying Ijaw people had long been known for their impartiality and commitment to fairness in handling disputes, regardless of the individuals involved.

“In this spirit of justice, we, the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress, reject Professor Okaba’s one-sided narrative and condemn his divisive actions, which can set the Ijaws in Rivers State against themselves. His behaviour suggests that he is not interested in resolving the crisis but rather in deepening it for reasons best known to him.

*We expect Professor Okaba, though not of Rivers State, and the INC leadership to guide themselves as statesmen in their conduct and utterances to uphold the unity, peace, and cohesiveness of the Ijaw people wherever they are found, particularly in Rivers State.

” We urge all stakeholders to disregard Professor Okaba, the INC President’s baseless claims and act in the best interests of Rivers State and the broader Ijaw community in Rivers State, putting aside personal and political differences for lasting peace.

“Finally, our brother, the INC president, has only murdered justice based on ethnicity, which amounts to a chilling betrayal of fairness”.

Group moves to recall Imo state lawmaker over alleged misconduct

A prominent grassroots organization, the Ahiazu Patriotic Front (APF), has initiated the process to recall Hon. Samuel Otibe, the member representing Ahiazu Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.

The group, consisting of professionals and patriots from Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, accused the lawmaker of “gross insubordination and disrespect for constituted authority.”

During APF’s quarterly meeting held last Sunday in Ogbe Ahiara, the group’s interim Executive Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Diala, stated that stakeholders had concluded that recalling Hon. Otibe was the only way to ensure effective representation for the people of Ahiazu.

He highlighted several allegations against the lawmaker, which, according to him, have caused widespread concern and embarrassment within the constituency.

Hon. Otibe is currently under indefinite suspension from the House of Assembly.

According to the group, he has shown no remorse for his actions.

APF’s leadership said it also expressed shock at findings from a probe into the allegation against the lawmaker.

The party members from Ogbe and Otulu/Aguneze wards had petitioned Hon. Otibe.

APF called on stakeholders in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area to convene an urgent meeting to address what it describes as the “shameful” representation of the constituency.

The Convener of the forum, Nwafor Peter at a press conference, said the Anambra Leaders Forum was united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer.

He said the Forum would purchase and bankroll the APC governorship election Nominations and Expression of interest form for Umeoji to show how serious it is.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum strongly supports his candidacy and will work tirelessly to ensure he emerges victorious as the APC flagbearer. We urge all Anambrarians to join us in this critical mission for the future of our state,” Peter said.

He added: “Hon. Umeoji’s extensive experience serving the people at different political levels has cemented his reputation as a leader with strong grassroots ties. His ability to engage effectively with the local communities ensures that he understands the pressing needs of Anambrarians. His political success, including his track record of listening to the masses, makes him the candidate who will address real challenges faced by the people.

“With a distinguished career in the legislature and public service, Umeoji brings vast experience to governance. He is known for his pragmatic approach to policy implementation, which ensures inclusive growth, security, and economic progress. Umeoji’s leadership experience within the National Assembly has positioned him to leverage national resources for state development.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum stands united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer. As a demonstration of our dedication, we will volunteer to purchase the APC governorship nomination form for Umeoji. This gesture is a testament to our belief in his capacity to lead Anambra into a brighter future. His candidacy represents a fresh start for the state, with leaders and citizens alike eager for genuine progress.”

Peter said governor Soludo’s alleged failure means the APC would win the state if the party gave the ticket to Umeoji.

According to him, Umeoji is the right choice to lead Anambra out of stagnation and into a future of growth and prosperity.

He said: “Governor Soludo’s administration has been marked by economic stagnation and an inability to fulfill key promises. Issues ranging from unemployment to deteriorating infrastructure continue to plague the state. Umeoji presents a much-needed alternative—a leader with practical solutions to create jobs, improve local economies, and enhance security across the state.

“Governor Soludo’s unpopularity and failure to deliver on key areas have opened a clear path for Hon. Umeoji to gain wide support across party lines. Umeoji’s political influence extends across constituencies, making him capable of garnering widespread votes and unseating the incumbent with ease. His strong affiliation with the APC at the national level will also position Anambra for federal support and partnerships, creating more opportunities for the state’s development.”

He added: “Anambrarians are yearning for change, and Umeoji offers the leadership that will prioritise their welfare, growth, and security. His candidacy will revitalise hope for better governance, economic progress, and stronger social welfare initiatives. Under his leadership, Anambra will witness transformation in key sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and industrial development.

“Anambra cannot afford another term under a leader disconnected from the needs of the people. Umeoji’s candidacy will galvanize a movement against the status quo, uniting Anambrarians in the pursuit of a prosperous and secure future. The upcoming election represents a critical opportunity to remove Soludo’s failed leadership and elect a leader genuinely committed to the state’s progress.”
