Anambra JUSUN begins strike as Soludo ignores 21-day ultimatum

Anambra State Branch of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Anambra State, will begin indefinite industrial action in the state on Monday, July 15, 2024.

The circular to that effect was made available to reporters Saturday in Awka, by the body, which was signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Union  Nwezi Ugochukwu.

The strike, according to the union, became necessary because the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, ignored the 21-day ultimatum given by the Union, which expired Thursday.

The strike notice was copied to all Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Chief Registrars, Registrars in charge, and staff of the Anambra State Judiciary.

The Anambra State Government had failed to comply with the agreements reached in 2011 and 2015 with  the state JUSUN

The agreements centered on the full implementation of the Consolidated Judiciary Salary Structure (CONJUS), a peculiar allowance for judiciary staff in the state.

The Nation, gathered that Soludo had refused to see the leadership of JUSUN to discuss the issue, even before the ultimatum was issued which the government ignored.

According to JUSUN, “The strike action is indefinite, and all staff of the Anambra State Judiciary have been directed to withdraw their services until further directives from the Union,” the statement read partly.

It meant that from Monday, all the courts in Anambra would be shut down, if the government failed to address the issue immediately

Speaking with The Nation, two members of the union said ” Soludo and his people are taking us for granted, but this time, they would know that “khaki no be leather.

“The public is advised to take note of the strike action and make necessary arrangements, as all court sittings and judicial activities will be suspended until further notice.

“JUSUN has vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met by the state government.

“The indefinite strike action by the JUSUN  is a culmination of the failure of the Anambra State Government to honour the agreements reached with the union. The strike is expected to have significant implications for the judiciary and the public in Anambra State,”  the members said.

  • Igbo women back Anioma State creation to balance Southeast representation

Igbo women back Anioma State creation to balance Southeast representation

Igbo women under the auspices of the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) have thrown their support behind the proposal to establish Anioma State from the current Delta State, to firm a sixth state in the Southeast region.

The women insisted that Anioma State would correct the inequity in the geopolitical distribution of states in Southeast geopolitical zone.

The President of IWA, Lolo Nneka Chimezie, who spoke to reporters in Enugu on Thursday, said rather than creating a new state from the current Southeast region, the creation of Anioma State would increase the size and population of the region.

According to Chimezie, the creation of Anioma State is not just an administrative adjustment but a necessary correction of historical oversight, emphasizing that the proposed state would bring about equitable representation and enhance the distribution of national resources.

She said: “Some people want Orlu State, Etiti state, Adada State, Anim state and so on. I am from Orlu by birth. But I don’t think it is a right agitation for a new state to be created from the existing Southeast. Rather, we should support the agitation for the creation of Anioma State to make for a sixth state in Southeast.

“We all know the disparity that has left the Southeast with only five states, compared to six in other zones, except the Northwest, which has seven. This has led to a perpetual disadvantage in legislative representation and resource distribution, with the Southeast having fewer senators than other zones.

“We as IWA believe that this Anioma State creation should not be an issue for debate.

“There has been this argument that the Igbo in the Delta have rejected their Igbo identity. Now we have them talking about reuniting with their brothers East of the Niger. We need to support them. It is in our collective interest that we support them to have a new state and join the Southeast.

“This will enlarge the coast of the Southeast and erase that dot in a circle the former president tagged us.

“Now there is a push for regional government. If this becomes successful, it will be an unfortunate thing that these our people would now become a minority in any other region outside the Southeast.

“If this regional government comes in place, the Southeast will benefit more because of the human resources that Anioma State would bring if they are joined in the Southeast.

“This again will certainly end the divide and rule system which the federal government had used in the past to create disaffection among the Igbo.

“We, in the IWA, therefore, are calling on our politicians and our apex sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide to look into this, caution our people from seeking the creation of a new state from the existing Southeast zone and support the move for a creation of Anioma State to join the Southeast as they have said”.

  • Asue Ighodalo, Edo elections and the media

Asue Ighodalo, Edo elections and the media

    By Duke of Shomolu

Responsible media is a key ingredient for healthy democracy.

This statement is a truism that cannot be refuted by any logical mind.

The media plays a very vital role of not only disseminating information but also that of guiding thought processes and providing decison taking inputs as we drive towards the very incisive element in the democratic process of making choices while still helping to maintain a healthy engagement within the process.

We are expected to choose our candidates based on our clinical assesments of his capacity, his programmes amongst other such variables and it is the media that provides the vehicle with which the very important ingredient – information is delivered to the electorate.

So you can imagine my deep worry when certain elements of the media ran with the obviously wrong interpretation of the recent judgement of a Federal High Court on the 378 delegates in the February 22 PDP primary elections in Edo State.

The headlines were bold and daring. They screamed in their vacousness the alleged disqualification of Mr Ighodalo who was and is still the bona fide candidate of the PDP in Edo State.

With the way the media has evolved in the last 20years, standards have really dropped leading to irresponsible reporting driven in some cases by citizen journalism.

Today, everybody with N100 data is reporting, analysing and disseminating News usually with dire consequences as a result of the inpurity that is being pushed out.

But sadly, what was really alarming in this particular case, was the involvement of what I would want to call responsible media outlets in this fraud

A TV station who prides itself as a multiple award- winning station also joined in this charade.

It led its reporting of the issue with the banal – Asue Ighodalo is disqualified dirge.

This was quite disappointing and disgraceful to say the least cos the CTC of the ruling is there for all to see.

The CTC did not in any way allude to the disqualification of Mr Ighodalo who I must say is the front runner in the campaigns but instead stated very clearly that the delegates were lawfully elected and as such must participate as Ad Hoc ward delegates emphasizing adherence to the PDP constitution and the electoral act of 2022.

How this translates to his disqualification even in my unlettered eye continues to beat my imagination.

This deliberate attempt at falsifying an obviously well researched judgement by certain sections of the media could if not well engaged go a long way to reorder the inevitable flow of  support towards Mr Ighodalo’s candidacy

But luckily, the campaign has come out with a strongly worded statement which has particularly and forcefully re affirmed his candidacy while also taking its time to put the judgement in its proper context.

Furthermore, in my discussions with top members of the campaign, it was very clear that the leadership of the campaign is not loosing sleep over this but instead has remained very focused in pursuing its assured agenda of winning the elections.

For me as a concerned observer, my prayer remains that the media would remain responsible to its ethics and push very professionally the very strong ethos of balance and accurate reporting as we head towards the very critical parts of this journey.

This prayer I dare say is for both mainstream media outlets and the myriad of citizen driven media outlets nestled very comfortably within the ambits of a very wild and oft irrepressible  Social Media enclave.

  • The Unforeseen Twinning of Tinubu and OBJ

The Unforeseen Twinning of Tinubu and OBJ

Recently, a photograph of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was all over the internet. The world has however been left to hazard only guesses on the subject of their discussion when they met before or after posing for the historic photograph. Neither Dame Tinubu nor OBJ has been forthcoming on this. Not even the fact that OBJ spotted a cap adorned with a symbol popularly associated with President Tinubu seems to barely signal, far from revealing reality.  Is it time for some convergence or review of otherwise irreconcilable differences? So much to interrogate

Prophetic (?) and uncommonly witty newspaper columnist, Sam Omatseye, during his National Concord days once asserted in an article: In Abuja the federal capital city of Nigeria the tempo is always false.  Omatseye, at that time found most decisions taken by the then Gen Sani Abacha regime unimaginably laughable, always at variance with the reality, hence his verdict.   It therefore never occurred to anyone that a government to be run by the avowed enemy of that military government, the then Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would validate Omatseye’s thesis.

Indeed, more ludicrous is the fact that even as President Obasanjo seemed to be severely adversarial to the Bola Tinubu-led government of Lagos State, President Tinubu feels so confident validating a failed   policy of the Obasanjo administration.

Until last week, I had always been enthusiastic retransmitting The Explainer, an online newspaper innovated by Alhaji Lanre Isa Onilu, my friend and professional colleague, now the Director General of National Orientation Agency, NOA.

The edition for that week I found incredible was that heralding the Tinubu government’s plan to invite investors to partake in the ownership of Nigerian universities. Not a few Nigerians had fiercely spoken against the immorality in former President Obasanjo’s ownership of a university to rival those owned by government. Obasanjo founded The Bell University, Ota, Ogun State. His deputy, Atiku Abubakar, that he has had to vilify repeatedly including publishing his (Atiku’s contents) moral ineptitude in a book also established America University in Yola. Nigerians have been unsparing in condemning OBJ and Atiku on their deliberate sabotaging of the public universities in favour of theirs and those of their cronies.

As at today, there are no fewer than 147 private universities in Nigeria. Some of them are suspected to have sprouted from illicit funds stolen by their owners. Indeed, one of them, NOK University, Kaduna State, was recently ordered to be forfeited to the Federal Government, by a law court.

And although the private universities seem to be in clear competition with the government owned universities and are often quick to orchestrate their rating by just any group or individual, they have been strident in making persistent calls to get some share of TETFUND funding which statutorily should go only to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education owned by the federal and state governments.  For them, the little commonwealth dedicated to public schools must still accrue to the schools owned by the rich class never compelled to establish any.

So, beyond The Explainer, the regular newspapers and other media published the same story and never had to retract for lack of any denial. Indeed, for many who don’t have access to The Explainer, it was the regular media that broke the news. Then came further reinforcement at the inauguration of the newly constituted councils for the federal universities.  So, the truism of the unity of bias and preference for the political class no longer take time to manifest? So the philosophical approach to governance by OBJ and Tinubu is the same afterall? So the interest of the people may never matter in our dear country?

So the people’s triumph over and above the machinations of Obasanjo’s education minister, Oby Ezekwesili, is only temporary? Is this how Nigeria will keep defeating her own people like another columnist once posited?  When you begin to heave some sighs of relief in Nigeria is when the political class signal to you that uhuru remains a saddening mirage.  This is what the plan to bring in foreign investors to come and exploit supposed beneficiaries of our national heritage portends unmistakably. It particularly smacks of lazy thinking appropriating no gain to the sacrifices made by some past, heroic Nigerians.  If anyone is in doubt, what spectacular good have the DISCOS impacted on electricity distribution?

The government of President of President Obasanjo convened a presidential summit on education in Abuja. Contrary to the usual practice, late Sultan Maccido specially invited to that meeting was made to fly in a commercial aircraft to that event in Abuja.  The summit over, Sultan never made it back home. The commercial aircraft he used crashed and the story ended there.

Soon afterwards, the Education Minister announced that they had perfected the policy to sell off all the  Unity Schools otherwise known as Federal Government Colleges. Pronto, they summoned the principals of the Unity Schools. They read out the plan they had formulated for the principal to go and implement. The NUC facility used for the frustrating meeting became dead silent as soon as Ezekwesili’s address was over.

One of the school principals at the meeting stood up to reconfirm their status as the marketing officers of the new policy to sell of the schools to new investors which would mean increase in fees payable by the pupils as well as the commercialist reconceptualization of the employment terms for the staff.  He wondered why the ‘big bosses’ never deemed it fit to get them involved in the process of the formulation of the new, anti-people policy.

Within me on that day, the feeling was that of extreme bitterness against the Nigerian state. As the Special Assistant to the Minister of State in that Ministry, Late Dr Sayyadi Abba Ruma (of blessed memory) that morning was the first time I also got to know about the sinister plan. Incidentally, I was just grooming my son to enroll at King’s College in Lagos.  The new policy however seemed hell-bent on forestalling my son’s dream school.

But the prayers of poor Nigerians were answered with the intense public outcry against the obnoxious agenda. Eventually, the admission was stalled for a year or so.  When it was clear that the sadists’ plan could no longer take off, the admission process into those schools was re-opened thus clearing the road for my son, now a COREN-accredited engineer.

But we have always had this thought that the Tinubu government is never in want of ideas before taking off. The journey so far, however, has not been quite reassuring with avoidable errors in a number of situations. It needs be clearly stated here that the commencement of the loan scheme for students may not be sufficient to stem the chaos that the investors may likely generate with possible profiteering like their counterparts in the power sector are slapping on Nigerians. Must this government do back and forth like it did in the banking sector, announcing a policy and withdrawing same within hours?  Must we wait till we have to confront a re-play of the political storm raging in Kenya?

Unlike some leaders with unenviable political trajectories, President Tinubu, is still perceived as one that should be guided by history especially with his obvious and not so obvious, radical background dating back to the anti-military struggle years.

If the planned sale of the unity schools failed, why would anyone think that the euphemism of bringing in investors into the management of our grand commonwealth in the education sector not fail?  Will TETFUND be scrapped? Is the newly introduced loan scheme intended to subtly undermine the overall public interest? Nigerians will always stand up to protect their commonwealth, it is certain, especially as also encouraged by President Tinubu renowned for his support for this.

As was the case with the Lagos Local Governments funds withheld by the OBJ government, so shall Nigerians triumph on the imminent avoidable crisis in the public universities.

Kogi: Stop intimidating INEC, Judiciary, CSOs tell politicians

A Coalition of Civil Society Organisations(CSOs) has called on politicians to exercise restraints in their criticism, intimidation and harassment of the country’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The coalition, during a peaceful protest led by the Convener, Dr. Wisdom Ohalete at the headquarters of the INEC in Abuja on Thursday, also expressed worry over the orgy of “needless harassment” of the judiciary by political actors, noting that it undermined the sanctity of the nation’s electoral system and the independence of the judiciary.

The coalition staged the protest in response to one led by a group which called itself Concerned Kogi Citizens Forum where it told the National Assembly that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) of the INEC was the problem of the country and that professors were being used to rig election and should stop being appointed as Returning Officers.

Dr. Ohalete,.while expressing disappointment with the avalanche of attacks on the electoral umpire, said politicians must imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and stop launching attacks on the nation’s institutions over their rejection by the electorate at the grassroot.

“It is saddening and most worrisome that politicians will stop at nothing in their desperation to grab power at all costs. In the case of Kogi, which has continued to attract headlines, it is on record that tribal jingoists who lost out in the November 11, 2023 poll have continued to drag the names of INEC and the judiciary to the mud due to their inability to achieve their political aims.

“When we continue to unleash needless attacks on these institutions of the law, we are stoking anarchy and telling the world that our reputation as a people is in tatters. No nation develops in an atmosphere where its institutions are maliciously derided and ridiculed by those who believe they have the structure of the state.

“A candidate has lost election at the poll in Kogi and lost at the tribunal. Instead of him to allow the judiciary do its job, he has resorted to intimidation just to criminally allow the pendulum swing in his favour. The country is a creation of law, and not a banana republic where people have their ways through criminal means,” he noted.

Dr. Ben Oguche the Convener of North Central Indigenous Peoples Assembly, in a letter to the leadership of INEC and Chief Justice of Nigeria, urged them to be firm and steadfast.

He called on Nigerians to rally support for the key institutions of the state and withstand those wishing to thwart the efforts to build Nigeria’s democratic culture.

While receiving a solidarity letter from the group on behalf of INEC, Director of Security, Ndidi Okafor, pledged continuous commitment of the Commission to the constitution of the country, and to ensuring free, fair, credible and inclusive elections.

She further appreciated the group for being peaceful and also for expressing their views about the Commission and the Judiciary.

He’s right, netizens react to Dangote’s ‘no power, no prosperity’ statement

Nigerians on social media have taken turns to commend president of the Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, following his “no power (electricity), no growth, no prosperity” comment.

Dangote, in an explosive speech at the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) Summit in Abuja on Tuesday titled: ‘Rethinking manufacturing in Nigeria,’ stated among other issues that “Import dependence is equivalent to importing poverty and exporting jobs; no power, no growth, no prosperity; similarly, no affordable financing, no growth, no prosperity and there is no industrialization without protection.”

In reaction to what many Nigerians considered a bold statement from a giant investor and stakeholders, an X user with the username Udufirstson stated that “the foundation of development is built on electricity; no nation can progress without power. However, Nigerians prioritize tribalism over confronting evil.”

Nwandu said: “Baba put your money where your mouth is. Lobby for favorable energy policies, and invest in power infrastructure.”

Mustapha Salaha, like Nwandu, advised “that is the more reason why we need you within the power sector. we’re inviting you to please come and explore the opportunities within the power industry for growth and prosperity.”

Adekanbi Riliwan inputted that “power is a major key to sustainable development and economic growth in any nation.”

Donald encouraged more investors to speak up, stating that “Aliko how I wish you have been speaking up this way for a very long time. But it’s okay keep it up.”

Seyi Stevens declared that “If any govt in Nigeria can fix electricity to 100 per cent it has solved over 50 per cent of the economic problems, this is a clear fact.

“Nigerians are very hardworking people and ready to work in any system that has basic infrastructure.”

Ahead of Edo State governorship election slated for September 21, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo, has promised to provide an enabling environment to make Edo a tourist destination for health care.

He spoke yesterday in Benin at an interactive session with doctors. He described them as his friends and appreciated the sacrifices they made to save lives.

Okpebholo said: “If I am elected as the governor of Edo State, by the special grace of God, I will provide an enabling environment to make Edo a tourist destination for health care.”

Okpebholo said he would get across to the leadership of NMA, Edo State chapter, to fix a new date for a proper interactive session with a full house.

Former Edo Secretary of NMA, Dr. Leonard Atsikidi, said there were about 2,000 doctors in the state, with each of them attending to an average of 100 patients in a week.

Atsikidi, a member of Edo APC Campaign Council, said doctors were in contact with the grassroots, with many of their patients believing in them and listening to their political opinions.

He said the group would mobilise doctors and other residents of the state, to ensure victory for APC in the election.
