Edo elders condemn insults against Oba of Benin by Labour Party supporters

A coalition of civil society organizations in Edo state has strongly condemned the “unwarranted barrage of insults and abuses” being directed at the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, by supporters of the Labour Party and its gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Akpata.

The coalition, which operates under the umbrella of the Edo socio-cultural advancement and good governance initiative, expressed shock and disappointment at what it described as a “childish, unwarranted and unacceptable behaviour” of some Labour Party supporters across various social media platforms.

In a press statement made available to journalists, the coalition’s spokesman, Comrade Melvin Irabor, said the Oba was not out of place in correcting Akpata’s claim to be the “son of the palace.”

“Our Oba was not out of place in correcting the erroneous remarks and insinuations by the Labour Party candidate, Olumide Akpata, for claiming to be the ‘Son of the Palace”, Irabor said.

The coalition noted that it was inundated with a “barrage of abuses” on the revered Oba of Benin by Akpata’s supporters on platforms such as Sahara Reporters, Nairaland Forum, Twitter, and Facebook.

Irabor read out some of the “disappointing comments,” including one by a user named Richard Wilson, who described the Oba as a “useless ruler,” and another by Evang.

Paschal Chidiebere, who suggested that the Oba would have “warmly received” Akpata if he had brought “money full of ‘Ghana must go.’”

The coalition emphasised that the Oba of Benin, as the “mouthpiece of the gods and the revered royal father of the kingdom,” has a responsibility to stay apolitical and correct any candidate making “erroneous remarks and insinuations.”

“Every candidate contesting in this election has the support and blessings of our Oba. He is the father of all and he wishes every one of them well,” Irabor stated.

The coalition warned the Labour Party supporters to desist from hurling insults on the Oba, stating that such actions would be considered an “affront on the palace.”

It called on all political parties to conduct their campaigns in a “democratic manner and keep the campaign, issues-based.”

  • From Kudi Abiola Corner to Dobale for Democracy

From Kudi Abiola Corner to Dobale for Democracy

“The love that follows us sometime is our trouble which we still thank as love” Shakespeare (Macbeth)

Undaunted by the lingering severity of the separation from our respective families for months and years for some of us, many of us still defied the freezing cold of New York in the United States in the morning of January 25, 1998.  All roads literally led to what used to be known as the Nigeria Corner.  The main task for the day was the formal public shaming of the Abacha junta with the renaming of the Nigeria Corner to Kudi Abiola Corner. The corner hosted the Nigerian Embassy in New York.

On that historic day, a number of Nigerian pro-democracy and human rights activists as well as journalists of varied cadres who had managed to escape from the country made effort to converge on that corner for the unveiling of the new identity. It was time to register a major international signal of support against the dictators back home. A few of those on ground on that day included Prof Wole Soyinka, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Pa Anthony Enahoro, The News Magazine directors Bayo Onanuga, Dapo Olorunyomi and Babafemi Ojudu as well as Dr Kayode Fayemi, then of CDD.

Renaming over, in defiant of the rain, elderly Pa Enahoro, reputed to have moved the motion for the independence of Nigeria was hard pressed to use a bathroom for urination. Baba sauntered to the entrance of the Nigerian Embassy only to be scared back. The staff of the embassy claimed to have been instructed to turn Nigerian patriots away no matter how respectable. All our pleas including the pledge that we meant no harm and that no one else would request any other facility fell on deaf ears. Thus promptly came the idea of resorting to a pizza hut for immediate convenience, now for all

Before the pizza hut relief, we had all been sober, sunk into pensive mood by the recall of circumstances of the death of the heroine suddenly felled by the bullets of the Abacha goons even as our own fate and future remained so uncertain with the dictators holding tight to power.  For how long can we endure remaining in exile, dislodged from our base and enduring sources of sustenance?

Apart from those of us that were Ramadan compliant on that day, the pizza hut bill, I later learnt was defrayed by Senator Tinubu.  Indeed, such was Tinubu’s own struggle with finances that he also had to sell off a gas station that we learnt he owned in some locations in the US because he had to support fellow Nigerian refugees in the US especially those affiliated with NADECO.

Not being sure of who to trust in the gathering, everyone did hushed-tone interactions with those  deemed necessary for opportunities, support and the likes.  Yours sincerely engaged with Dr Kayode Fayemi for the better part of our stay, being the only one I had been familiar with from Nigeria.

KF as often affectionately hailed occupied a frontline position among activists. He was the big masquerade behind Radio Kudirat run by activists in the diaspora. The broadcasts were so well professionally prepared that the military government was always unsettled by the messages.  The Abacha government did all it could to jam the broadcasts but its sophisticated technology damned all the efforts of the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC. Indeed, rather than wait for the celebrated Orosanye Report to justify the merger of NBC with the Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC, NBC had ceased to be genuinely functional long before now. Radio Kudirat’s broadcasts blossomed by the day to the delight of Nigerians fed up with the murderous regime of Gen Abacha which kept on felling innocent souls, like they did Kudi Abiola, simply because of their political persuasions. In the Southwest alone considered the most resistant to the junta, Alhaja Suliyat Adedeji and Pa Alfred Rewane were summarily assassinated plunging the nation into some bloated fear with everyone losing confidence in the  capacity of the state to provide basic security for the citizens.  The fear particularly deepened with the attacks on women like Kudi Abiola in Lagos and Alhaja Adedeji in Ibadan, both of them never known to have any record of being violent or sponsoring violence.

Kudi Abiola Corner availed our collective some renewed hope as we rediscovered ourselves to reunite and re-strategise. Before we dispersed, KF offered to invite me to London once done with my programme at Columbia University where I was a Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Beyond sheer promise, I received the invite to London which he personally signed a couple of weeks later. Promptly, I applied for the British visa and I got it within three hours.

There was no stopping the Kudi Corner effect. Some three weeks later, the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University set up a special session on the repressive regime in Nigeria. Widely promoted campus-wide, Babafemi Ojudu (same Senator Ojudu) and yours sincerely were featured as speakers to represent the media and the human rights sectors respectively. Incidentally, I used to work in the same Concord Press with Ojudu. Ojudu had left with his team to co-found The News Magazine while I later left, following the proscription of the newspaper, to become the Head of Campaigns of Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO.  As was at the Kudi Abiola Corner the audience comprised some Nigerian prodemocracy and human rights activists as well as journos in exile or on some fellowship programmes with some American institutions. For instance while I was at Columbia, Sunday Dare, who was Buhari’s Sports and Youths Minister was running a professional journalism fellowship programme at New York University, NYU.

So much water had run pass the bridge you will say. It’s conspicuously unmistakable that none of those who had emerged Nigerian president since democracy was restored in 1999, poetically speaking, deserved to have come before President Tinubu in view of his pro-democracy campaign profile.  Acting the strategist that he is however, he took his time and waited patiently for the right time.  Were his rivals in the 2023 election ever near him in this game? But politics could be a game of chance as they may want to rationalize together with their adherents

President Tinubu did well by  acknowledging a few of the compatriots in the Democracy Day speech but the economic, social and all other indices in Nigeria far transcend romanticism! Lagos Calabar Coastal Highway, Badagry-Sokoto Express, the Abuja Metro are all quite commendable but it is not time to brag yet like Sheu Sani remarked at the Democracy Day dinner. The President seemed precocious though by declaring his slip on the parade vehicle as dobale for democracy.

Expectedly, the misstep has attracted several reactions. A commentator in one of the television talk shows believed that the president’s security handlers need be reviewed immediately. That was an immediate recipe for the physical blunder.  Some of us, like the witty president admitted, (Tinubu: A leader and his wealth of wits – Bola Tinubu Achievements E – Library (tinubustraight.com)  feel there must be a thorough overhaul of the president’s team such that his labour as a prodemocracy activist shall not be deemed to be in vain.

The president should know that his keen observers, especially those who at some point shared some critical moments with him have far higher expectations such as should never give room for forgery at the enviable level of the presidency as had manifested in recent lists of political appointees.

Just hoping that the dobale for democracy is a sincere atonement so we can all look forward to a greater future for Nigeria.  Nigeria we hail thee!

  • Jubilation as Soludo’s wife offers free health insurance worth N12.5m to PWDs in Anambra

Jubilation as Soludo’s wife offers free health insurance worth N12.5m to PWDs in Anambra

Jubilation erupted on Wednesday, June 13, at the Governor’s Lodge in Anambra State as the governor’s wife, Nonye Soludo, enrolled 1,000 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) into the state’s Health Insurance scheme.

During a town hall meeting organized to promote her Healthy Living Initiative, Soludo announced that the package, valued at N12,500 each, aims to ensure equal representation and opportunities for all.

She emphasized that with adequate attention, PWDs can contribute unique values to the journey towards a livable and prosperous Anambra State.

She urged the beneficiaries to use the health premium fully to their advantage, just as she advised them to prioritise their health, eat right, and imbibe personal and environmental hygiene to stay healthy and alive.

She said: “I invited you because I love you all and look out for you. My husband’s administration also appreciates your undying desire to bring your best to the table of good governance.

“As I behold your amazing faces, I see strength, tenacity, doggedness, and unbeatable ambitions. This is why Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, is giving out 1000 health insurance slots free to PWDs in the state.

“This is our own way of saying that we care about you and we know that health is the greatest wealth. This free health insurance will be your passport to access the best medicare anywhere in the state.

‘I want you to ensure that you use the health insurance fully to your advantage. When you notice any sign of infirmity, do not waste time visiting your doctor,” she said.

Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Anambra, Mr Ugochukwu Okeke requested the inclusion of PWDs in the Healthy Living campaign.

He regretted that PWDs were more affected by issues of healthy living as a result of different challenges hinging on their various nature of disabilities.

“Including PWDs in your campaign will help get the awareness and support down to our members, thereby enabling an inclusive society,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director of Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Williams Obiozor advocated for more support and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.

He said empowering and catering to the well-being of PWDs was a collective effort and should not be left to the government alone.

Earlier, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo appreciated the Governor’s wife for the demonstration of love for persons with disabilities in the state.

On his part, Executive Secretary of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, Simeon Onyemaechi, said the package cost N12,500 annually to get medicines and treatments for health conditions covered by the scheme.

NDLEA laments women’s involvement in illicit drug

…as Soludo launches “Clean Anambra of substance abuse”

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra state has expressed worry over the growing number of women involved in drug abuse, saying one out of every four users of illicit drugs is a woman.

State Commandant, Dan Onyishi stated this on Thursday in Awka during the launch of Operation Clean Anambra of Substance Abuse by Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo.

Delivering a seminar on “Role of Opinion Leaders in Fight against Drug/Substance Abuse in Our Communities”, Onyishi regretted that Nigeria has a 14.4 percent drug abuse prevalence rate, with a 40 percent projection by 2030.

He said: “According to recent statistics, Nigeria alone has 14.4 percent drug abuse prevalence rate and it was projected that by 2030 it will rise to 40 percent if nothing is done.

“The major concern is that women, especially young girls are embracing substance abuse. One out of every four drug abusers is women and one out of five will suffer substance abuse disorder.

“As key nurturers, moulders and caregivers in the society, women should not be involved in illicit drug abuse. As an agency, we are taking the sensitisation and enforcement into the communities because the grassroots campaign is one sure way to address the menace of drug abuse.

“We’ll also collaborate with the governor’s wife who is Chairperson of the State Drug Control Committee in the state so that the 40% projections would not come to pass in the state.”

Wife of the State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo lamented that substance abuse had become a pandemic in the society and required collective effort to tackle.

She blamed the high rate of crimes, violence, and health complications especially among youths to the menace, urging parents to be closer to their children to monitor their activities, listen, and counsel them daily.

She said: “Watching our young, vibrant population held back and fighting for freedom from this avoidable danger brought tears to my eyes. That visit is one of the reasons we are here today

“Most disheartening is the fact that these dangerous substances have found their way into schools and into the hands of children.

“The illicit drug economies are booming to the detriment of our society. The proliferation of synthetic psychoactive substances is another issue of crunch concern.

“Our homes are losing the sacredness of culture and moral traditions. Our communities have become havens for drug peddlers and manufacturers who use the element of fear and intimidation to silence the people who are willing to assist local authorities with valid information.

“Unemployment, deprivations, and social crisis have also played their part in heightening the danger. It is now time to take the bull by the horns and approach the problem with the seriousness that it deserves.

Earlier, Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike said that the campaign would save the youths from degenerating into a generational tragedy with drug addiction.

President-General of Anambra State Association of Town Union, Titus Akpudo promised to take the message against substance abuse to the nooks and crannies of the state.

  • Permanent Secretary denies alleged sexual harassment

Permanent Secretary denies alleged sexual harassment

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Lamuwa, has denied the allegation of sexual harassment by Simisola Fajemirokun-Ajayi, a staff member of the ministry.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, on May 27, 2024 wrote to the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, to probe the allegation.

“Bearing in mind the gravity of the matter, I feel it necessary to draw your attention to it and ask that you handle it accordingly,” Tuggar wrote in the cover attached with the petition.

In an official reaction, through his legal team led by Audu Anuga (SAN), Lamuwa strongly denied all the assertions by Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi, one of the minister’s aides.

In the statement published by PRNigeria on Wednesday, Anuga faulted the claims, saying the accuser read wrong meanings to courteous dispositions of the Permanent Secretary.

It reads: “We are legal representatives of Ambassador Ibrahim Lamuwa, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have been authorised to make the following statement on his behalf, in response to allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by Mrs Simisola O. Fajemirokun-Ajayi, an aide to the Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs.

“The media, particularly the social media, has been inundated with the digital copy of a petition written by legal representatives of Mrs. Fajemirokun-Ajayi against Amb. Lamuwa. This petition was leaked to generate sympathy for her unsubstantiated claims.

“We wish to state categorically that our client has never made any sexual advances towards Mrs. Simisola O. Fajemirokun-Ajayi, who he is aware is a married woman, neither has he ever made suggestive comments or innuendos that requested any form of untoward relationship between himself and her.

“Our client distinctly recalls the events at the ministry’s retreat on October 7th 2023 where Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi claims that he invited her to his room. Our client states categorically that he never made such an invitation and that his only communication with Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi, which was an overt one, was where he checked on her, like he did to all participants on whether they had been well-lodged in their hotels.

“He further recalls that the instance where he spoke of her as a nursing mother, during the same retreat was in a colloquial conversation they were having with other participants, where one participant even responded jokingly that when a woman says “her baby” it could mean either her husband or one of her children, of which he innocuously joked asking “how big is the baby?”

“Our client maintains that those conversations were made jokingly and sees their misinterpretation as malicious and with ill intent. Our client also maintains that it is absurd for Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi to claim that he invited her to Hong Kong, given that the conversation they were both having was on how Hong Kong had digitised its work processes as far back as 1999.

“Our client wonders how such a conversation became interpreted as an invitation for her to travel alongside himself, knowing full well that she is an aide to the minister. How can she leave the minister to follow the permanent secretary on a vacation? Would that not be the height of delusion for the one requesting and the one heeding the request?

“It is clear that the minister’s aide has misinterpreted ordinary conversations, made openly and in the presence of other participants, for untoward intentions. We believe these allegations are directly tied to our client’s firm objections raised regarding Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi’s improper requests, particularly regarding financial matters in the ministry.

“For example, Mrs. Fajemirokun-Ajayi made a trip to the World Economic Forum (Davos), of which she sought a reimbursement for the ministry. Our client firmly explained to her that while the ministry may look at avenues to refund her expenses, it is not the appropriate process for a trip to be made without approval, and then funded with taxpayers’ money. after the fact.

“Further to this is the fact of Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi’s unfamiliarity with civil service rules and processes, where she had requested access to policy files and even financial records of high-level ministry activities from our client. By no means should the permanent secretary, as chief accounting officer of the ministry, provide such sensitive documents to an aide of the minister, worse via a WhatsApp chat.

“There are due processes in government, and they must be followed. “We must emphasise that Mrs Fajemirokun-Ajayi is a political appointee not a civil servant. Thus, finance and policy matters are out of her bounds in this instance.

“It is crucial to mention that our client, in all his 32 years of service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, never received a query nor a report against him bordering on harassment, let alone sexual harassment. During this period, our client has served in Hong Kong, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Syria and more recently, Senegal, and there has never been a negative report on his conduct in any of these countries.

“Ambassador Lamuwa has also served for nine years in the State House. From the office of the vice president to the office of the chief of staff to the president, and to the office of the president, and no negative report or allegation of any kind has ever been raised against him,” the legal document stated.

  • Why Fed Govt should reform public education, by Moghalu

Why Fed Govt should reform public education, by Moghalu

A former deputy governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has underscored the relevance of an educational policy that can enhance the nation’s human capital, make it globally competitive, and bolster its standing within the global community.

He said there is no alternative but to reform  public education system and make it world class, adding that no country in the world has risen with a reliance on private sector educational institutions alone.

Moghalu noted that private education is expensive, and only a tiny percentage of citizens can afford it, stressing that education is a fundamental human right which must be accessible, qualitative and affordable.

This, he said, would determine Nigeria’s rise in the 21st century.

The former CBN deputy governor was the keynote speaker at the 5th Arthur Mbanefo Lecture entitled:”Education and National Development: Meeting Nigeria’s challenge in the 21st century”, which held at the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre(AMDRC) , University of Lagos(UNILAG).

The  lecture also coincided with the 94th birthday of  former diplomat Chief Arthur Mbanefo.

Moghalu said as the private sector became increasingly involved in education through the establishment of both elite and pseudo-elite private schools, Nigeria’s public education system increasingly faced a struggle for

    survival and relevance.

He stated that 70 percent of tertiary education in Nigeria should be based on  Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to drive technological advancement and innovation.

He said it is imperative to foster the connection between academia and industry to improve the socio-economic impact of education, adding that tertiary

students require exposure to real-world challenges that their education is designed to help them address.

“We must encourage foreign investment in education, this will enable pool of human capital needed for broad- based economic productivity, limit the drain on Nigeria’s  foreign reserves,” he added.

The celebrator, a distinguished diplomat,  Chief Arthur Mbanefo stressed the need for a fit-for-purpose education that is relevant to  the 21st century.

“Our priorities are misplaced in this country, education should be prioritised,” he said.

He thanked everyone for honouring him.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola said the university has been in the forefront of Artificial Intelligence and digital learning. She said it has over 23 research centres and 4 innovation and technology hubs.

She said the AMDRC Centre  is a digital research hub where students and relevant stakeholders could have access to digital resource learning to advance research and post-graduate studies.

Lagos to link Sangotedo with Ito-Omu creek

Lagos state government has embarked on  a road and bridge project which will link Sangotedo in Eti Osa with Ito-Omu creek in Ibeju Lekki and Epe.

The special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, gave the assurance on Saturday, during an inspection of some projects across the state.

”Today, we are at the Omu Creek Road which is one of the strategic projects that is ongoing.

“It is a road of about five kilometres and about 600 metres bridge.

”It is about 1.1 kilometres from the Lekki-Epe Express Road. What we have witnessed today is really a big progress, there has been a lot of soil reclamation, a lot of soil replacement has gone on.

”We will be able to get to the point where the bridge work will start, a lot of soil investigation is going on, the progress is very commendable,” he said.

The special adviser also inspected the Ketu Alapere Pedestrian Bridge reconstruction.

Daramola said that the project would be completed in few months.

It was reported that the bridge, which was constructed 11 years ago, was damaged  by impact of a container-laden truck which attempted  to manoeuvre under the bridge.

“Reconstruction of the damaged Alapere Pedestrian Bridge is ongoing.

“There was a lot of work on the alignment.  The federal government was working on the Third Mainland Bridge, and we had to synchronise the work.

”There is good progress, the foundation is done, the cast elements are all being set, the headroom will be improved, and in another couple of months – two, three months  – I am sure that the project will be completed,” he said.

“Contractors are on site, and we are having good milage.

”Some sets of roads were done in Ikoyi previously, and this set will add more connectivity.  The progress of work  is very commendable,” he said.

The special adviser said that the Ilabere Link Road, Ikoyi, project was 70 per cent completed.

”None of the roads has been completed because it is a network.

”In Lagos as a whole, there is quite a number of projects going on, we visit these sites from time to time.

”I can assure you in Alimosho we have ongoing projects such as Babafemi Daada, Abaranje Road.  In Badagry, we have Hospital Road, Samuel Ekundayo Road. In Kosofe, we have St. Finbars Road, and all the contractors are on site.

”The governor has given us support maximally, you will see more progress.”
