    ‘We will stop wetlands encroachment’

Lagos State Government yesterday reiterated its commitment to stop encroachment and misuse of wetlands, for better preservation of the biodiversity.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, during an advocacy programme on Wetlands and Biodiversity Conservation, for Lagos Central Senatorial District, held at Yaba Local Council Development Area.

He said the government was planning to review the draft policy on wetlands management and conservation of its biodiversity (2016), to restore, protect and conserve degraded wetlands in Lagos State for better use.

The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Mobolaji Gaji, said the aforementioned was achievable by addressing the growing challenges in preventing wetlands encroachment in the state, restoring degraded wetlands, protecting identified wetlands and restriction of human activities on wetlands areas.

  • Govt seeks understanding on Lekki-Ikoyi toll gate

Govt seeks understanding on Lekki-Ikoyi toll gate

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, has pleaded with motorists to show understanding over the planned re-opening of Lekki Ikoyi Toll Gate.

He spoke yesterday at Arise News Morning Show, about the plan by Lekki Concession Company (LCC), to open the tolling facility and run it free of charge for two weeks from 1st April, 2022. Collection of toll will begin two weeks after.

Expressing the need for Lagosians to be compassionate about the plight of the 500-strong LCC workers who have been out of work for 18 months, Omotoso said the company had huge debts to pay. LCC is owing local lenders N61.1 million and foreign lenders $31.1 million.

He said: “The re-opening will go ahead as recently announced by the Lekki Concession Company and toll will not be collected for the first two weeks to test run the new technology being installed there. This is to ensure people have a better way of paying at the toll gate.

“It is also economically unrealistic and investment unfriendly for the Toll Plaza to remain shut forever, as the company has financial obligations to discharge to its creditors, while its workers, about 500, also need to get back to work and earn their livelihood.

“The restoration of operations by LCC follows extensive engagement with stakeholders, such as the residents association, traditional rulers, transport union and others, all of whom the state truly appreciates.”

Speaking further, the commissioner said LCC is a major partner in the development of infrastructure on the Victoria Island-Lekki-Ikoyi-Ajah corridor and this has been expressed in the reconfiguration of the first, second and Ajah roundabouts to ease traffic as well as responding to security challenges to foster a safe and secure atmosphere for living and doing business.

According to him, those criticising the planned return of tolling are right “because they are free to express their opinion. We always talk about our rights and privileges; we should also spare a thought for responsibility.”

Lagos, World Bank parley on register for social intervention

Lagos State Government and the World Bank are scaling up strategies to create a detailed and credible data bank, which will be used for social intervention programmes.

This is part of efforts towards providing support for the poor and the vulnerable.

Receiving the World Bank Country Director, Nigeria, Mr. Shubaham Chaudhuri, in his office, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Sam Egube, said Lagos always looked forward to interventions like the Social Safety Nets initiatives, with the generation and maintenance of a Single Social Register (SSR), to implement its humanitarian programmes, especially when it involved the World Bank.

He said the ministry’s responsibility of resource allocation and performance management was charged with the engagement of the initiative in the state by the Federal Government, to achieve the expected outcome, using the social register.

Egube said the move necessitated the setting up of the Social Operation Coordinating Unit (SOCU) as a full-fledged department to drive the SSR for implementation of intervention programmes for the poor and vulnerable, to cushion the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and upsurge in food prices.

He said: “Apart from the fact that the social register helps us as a government to reach out accurately, it helps us mine a wider range of data because we are able to connect with the different aspects of their living.”

Recalling a recent meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr. Chaudhuri said he pleaded with the governor and his colleagues on the need to own the initiative, not leaving it in the hands of the Federal Government alone.

Present at the meeting were World Bank Task Team Leader Mr. Muderis Abdullahi Mohammed, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Economic Planning and Budget, Aare Bayo Sodade, and other top officials of the ministry.

Osun 2022: Babayemi remains PDP candidate, says lawyer

Omooba Dotun Babayemi, the governorship candidate of the Osun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), remains the legally recognised standard- bearer of the party for the July 16 election, a lawyer, Edmund Biriomoni, has said.

He gave the clarification while speaking with reporters against the backdrop of the sine dine adjournment of an Osun State High Court sitting in Ijebu-Jesa, presided over by Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, in a case between Ademola Adedokun and 29 others against the PDP and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Biriomoni derided those jubilating as being ignorant of the position of the law, insisting that “their jubilation amounts to self-delusion and foolishness. These people have killed themselves and have at the same time, locked the door against themselves.”

The lawyer said procedurally, the Ademola Adeleke group had taken wrong steps, adding that “there are ways to go in this kind of a route, but unfortunately, they have got everything wrong and wasted their own time.”

Senator Adeleke, however, said he would be the standard-bearer.

A statement by the Director, Media and Strategy of Ademola Adeleke Campaign Organisation, Olawale Rasheed, said Adeleke is the official PDP candidate, “as the order restraining PDP and INEC from recognising Adeleke lapsed today with Justice Aderibigbe refusing to renew an order recognising the claim of Babayemi to the governorship ticket.”
