Makinde orders Ibadan traditional institution to revert to original concept

Following the controversy trailing the succession plan to the Olubadan throne, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde said yesterday that Ibadan traditional institution must revert to its original concept.

He said this is the last time there will be controversy regarding who should be installed as the Olubadan.

Makinde promised to uphold the stand point of the late Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, on the review of the chieftaincy laws as carried out by the former administration.

It is in the public domain that the late Oba Adetunji publicly expressed dissatisfaction at the review when it was proposed and executed by the late ex-governor Abiola Ajimobi administration.

Makinde spoke when he paid a condolence visit to the wife and family of the late Olubadan, Olori Rashidat Adetunji, at the Popoyemoja Palace, Ibadan.

He hailed the late Olubadan for his forthrightness and for standing to speak truth to power during his reign, noting that history would not forget him.

  • Traders protest market leader imposition

    Traders protest market leader imposition

Traders at the Akure Spare Parts Market, Akure, the Ondo State capital, have begun protest over alleged imposition of Mr. Kayode Olorunfemi as the leader.

The traders accused the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, of imposing Olorunfemi as their leader.

They urged the local authorities to intervene.

The protesters said Olorunfemi had been the leader of the market since last year.

The protesters’ leader, Kole Amueyinoge, said they were tired of the continued imposition of Olorunfemi as the head of the market, even after they extended his tenure by 12 months.

He said: “We visited the local government authorities, who convened a peace meeting with the traders and we all signed a peace accord with Olorunfemi, who promised to vacate the seat last December, while an interim committee would be put in place.

“We are surprised to learn that the committee has been stopped not to conduct an election until further notice and Olorunfemi should continue as our chairman.

“We will resist Olorunfemi to lead the traders at Mojere market. He has caused atrocities at the market. The Deji of Akure has installed him as the Asoju Oba at the market. He should step aside from contesting the chairmanship position.

The Chief Press Secretary to Deji of Akure, Mr. Micheal Adeyeye, said the monarch had no interest in any of the candidates jostling for the leadership of the market, “even though the market is a traditional market.”

He said the Deji of Akure only installed a traditional leader at the market and not a chairman.

“The Deji of Akure should not meddle in the leadership of the market, as we pay directly to the local government. The council is in charge of the market, and we have informed it.”

But Olorunfemi described the protesting traders as ‘lazy bones’, insisting that he remained the chairman of the market.

“I am not bothered about their noise. Those making noise are not traders at the market. I decided to stay off the market in order not to disrupt peace.”

Oyebanji to supporters: stick to issue-based campaigns

A leading governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries slated for January 27, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has urged his supporters to continue marketing his programmes to the people and avoid joining issues with opposing camps.

Oyebanji, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), who restated his commitment to running an issue-based campaign, enjoined his supporters to focus more on key areas of development, competence, character, capacity and track record, among others, in making the campaigns issue-based.

He advised them to avoid needless arguments, insults and name-calling, which were inimical to peace and goodwill in the party.

“The next two weeks are crucial for our campaigns. Let us focus on pushing a message of hope, peace, progress and development for sons and daughters of Ekiti. I appreciate your support. Together we will continue to uphold the Ekiti dream,” Oyebanji said.

‘APC, Oyetola will be victorious in Osun poll’

The leader of the Friends of Gboyega Oyetola and the Senate spokesman, Sen. Ajibola Basiru, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Gboyega Oyetola remained the party and candidate to beat in the July 16 Osun State governorship election.

He spoke yesterday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja after leading his group to obtain the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms for the governor to seek re-election.

Basiru said: “From what is on the ground today, objectively, and you can go and conduct a vox pop in the streets of Osun, the party to beat is APC and the aspirant that will get the mandate of the APC is Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, no doubt about it.”

The lawmaker said that the governor enjoyed the support and backing of stakeholders of the party in the nine federal constituencies of the state.

He attributed their support for Oyetola to his giant strides in the provision of dividends of democracy through infrastructure, social amenities, security, welfare of workers and prudent management of scarce resources.

  • Our intellect will win us Yoruba nation – Akintoye

Our intellect will win us Yoruba nation – Akintoye

The President, Ilana Omo Oodua, Prof. Banji Akintoye has unveiled the group’s strategy to achieve an independent country for the Yoruba race, irrespective of Federal Government opposition.

Akintoye told The Nation exclusively that the Yoruba would deploy their intellectual gifts rather than fight a physical battle, adding that the group was sure of victory.

“We are a people uniquely gifted to fight and win by intellectual means. That is what we are doing, and we cannot lose,” he said.

Ilana Omo Oodua is the foremost umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups and Akintoye, who has led the organisation since its inception, recently relocated abroad.

Explaining the reason for his movement abroad, Akintoye claimed that his life and that of others close to him were under threat.

He said: “I and some persons close to me in the struggle for Yoruba Self-determination needed to get away from Nigeria to preserve our lives. The right to self-determination for all nationalities of the world is a right recognised by the entire world. It is a right guaranteed by the international laws to which Nigeria is a signatory—laws that are therefore part of the laws of Nigeria.

“In a truly modern country, we should not fear any danger on account of our belief in self-determination for our nation. Especially because we also sincerely believe and constantly proclaim and show that we will always push our quest for Self-determination by peaceful and law-abiding means.

“We do operate in a peaceful and law-abiding manner and teach our young to do the same and they do so. We respect the government and the laws of Nigeria. Therefore, there should be no danger to us in our propagating our belief.”

He claimed that his group received “credible intelligence” that unidentified leaders in the country “were planning to take our lives in our homes, we decided it was time to put ourselves far beyond their reach. That is what prompted my leaving Nigeria for another country.”

Akintoye said having moved abroad, his life was no longer under threat.

He added: “But it was seriously under threat in Nigeria. Notice was even served on me in the form of attacking and destroying the assets of my daughter-in-law who is a very creative person. Yes, in Nigeria, my life would be in danger; the same is true for many people who are fighting for Yoruba self-determination even though they are fighting peacefully and in a law-abiding manner.

Last month the Ilana Omo Oodua initiated moves to secure the release of Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo alias Igboho, who is detained at a prison in the Benin Republic.

The academic referenced the attack on Igboho’s home in Nigeria as, in his view, an example of the plot to silence Yoruba self-determination advocates.

“We all know what happened to Chief Sunday Adeyemo some weeks after I left Nigeria. When agents of the Nigerian government invaded his home, their intention was to kill him, but mercifully, he managed to escape. Nevertheless, they massively and viciously destroyed his property. A lot of other Yoruba persons have been fleeing Nigeria,” he said.

As to whether he was being persecuted, he replied: “I don’t believe that anybody in the world can persecute me. They might try, but they would not succeed. I am not afraid to believe what I know to be right and to propagate it.

“If anybody thinks that they can persecute me to give up my ideas and principles, they are deceiving themselves. Nobody can frighten, bully or buy me.

“I have carefully considered all things and options concerning the Yoruba Nation and I believe that what will be best for the Yoruba Nation and the world is that the Yoruba should have their own separate sovereign country in the world. I am sure that it is my responsibility, God’s will for my life and God’s commission over my life to contribute to the creation of a separate sovereign Yoruba nation-state.

“I arose from the stock of brave warriors, and when I grew up and left home, I providentially entered into the circle of the bravest and the most principled warriors that Nigeria has ever seen. A warrior for what is right, a warrior for the good quality of life for common people, a warrior for decency and beauty in the affairs of the country, warrior for the best quality of life for the common people. I refer to Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He was a man that nobody could buy, bully or frighten, and I am grateful to God that God positioned me to have been close to him in all my political involvements in Nigeria.

“I know that very many members of the Yoruba elite are shocked by the clumsy attempts being made by functionalists of the Nigerian states to compel me to give up my belief. You all know of persons who have been hired to cook up stories about me to present me as a person secretly planning violence.

“For instance, when I patriotically wrote a letter to the Southwest governors about impending danger to the Yoruba Southwest, some federal agents put forth a letter that I was planning to destroy security in the Southwest and suggested that the (Muhammadu) Buhari government should arrest me accordingly.

“When our young people abroad struggled to get me to speak before the United Nations Organization, some agents of the state published a long letter urging the United Nations not to allow me or Ilana Omo Oduduwa to speak because, according to them, Ilana Omo Oduduwa and I are agents of insecurity and national destruction. But I assure all Yoruba people that I am beyond persecution.”

But is the Ilana Omo Oodua a threat to Nigeria’s security? Akintoye disagreed.

“Definitely not,” he said, “We do not constitute any threat to the national security. We do not constitute and we do not intend to constitute any threat to security. We will continue to do what we have been doing, namely, confidently and strongly proclaiming our views and doing so lawfully and peacefully.

“When the masses of our youths rally in the streets, they do so lawfully and peacefully without constituting any threat to security and without clashing with security operatives. We respect the laws and the government of Nigeria. In fact, we have become the most obvious guarantee of peace and security in Nigeria.”

AkIntoye explained that in furtherance of this, his group had written petitions agitation for the Yoruba nation

He said: “As you all know, we have produced several petitions. For instance, you all know about the petition which we wrote to the International Criminal Court. We wrote that petition because, for more than five years, herdsmen and militias armed with sophisticated weapons have been coming to destroy our farms, kill our farmers, destroy our villages and farmsteads, viciously rape and kill our women, force countless of our farmers to abandon farming altogether. All these without any resistance from the Federal Government of Nigeria; sometimes even with collusion from Nigerian official agencies.

For the campaign to free Igboho, he said the group was deploying a political solution “in addition to the use of the legal solution.”

Akintoye, however, did not confirm any alleged plot to eliminate Igboho.

He said: “Of course, it is extremely difficult for people, including even we who are Sunday Igboho’s parents and who are watching carefully over his affairs, to confirm authoritatively that such a plot exists. But Nigeria is a country in which strange things happen, even at the highest level.

“If such a plot exists, its purpose of course would be to stamp out the Yoruba self-determination struggle.”

The don did not rule out resolving the group’s grievances against the Nigerian state through negotiation.

“Our stated objective is to push responsibly to the negotiating table and not to street brawls or battlefields. And in general, negotiation is inevitable in all situations of difference among men. So, hopefully, someday, there will be a negotiating table upon which responsible representatives of the Yoruba Nation will plead the Yoruba cause peacefully, and from which they will bring forth the Yoruba nation-state in all peace, responsibility and friendliness.

“A Yoruba Nation that will be a friend to its neighbours and that will be happily involved in all the future, in collaborations in good policies and programmes that will benefit the lives of citizens in all directions. We, after we get our own country, do not wish or hope to live in hostility with our neighbours.

“We want to be a blessing to all our neighbours and we hope that our neighbours will be a blessing to us too.”

  • Osun APC urges committee to disregard TOP members’ requests

Osun APC urges committee to disregard TOP members’ requests

The leadership and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State yesterday appealed to the National Reconciliation Committee to disregard whatever was contained in the petitions forwarded to it by the dissenting members of the party called “The Osun Progressives (TOP)”.

The ruling party, who described TOP’s requests as self-serving, misleading, sarcastic, spurious and baseless, called on the committee to dismiss it in its entirety, as it was meant to clandestinely destroy the corporate image of the party in the state.

The party’s position was made known when the committee met with the stakeholders of the party at the Government House, Osogbo.

Responding to some of the issues raised and prayers made by TOP members to the Reconciliation Committee, the Secretary, State Congress Committee, Mr. Sunday Akere, said the allegation of alienation of party leaders was false and way off from the truth, adding that the current leadership structure was put in place by Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and inherited by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola until few additions made just about a few months ago.

On the allegation that the current governor hinged most of his policies implementation and execution on the platform that ushered his emergence, Ilerioluwa, Akere noted that the emergence of Ilerioluwa was more or less like the emergence of Oranmiyan created by Aregbesola that ushered him to power, adding that since Oyetola was elected governor, the party has taken the front burner in all decisions making and implementation.

Akere, who noted that TOP was formed purposefully by those that believed in an “audio” promise given them without the knowledge and consent of the governor to be made one thing or the other in government, said the allegation of ‘sit-tight syndrome’ was not correct because the party leadership in adopting consensus as suggested, ensured that those that were not active or doing well in positions they were holding were replaced.

According to him, in the preparation for the just- concluded congresses, the governor and the party leaders carried everybody along and acted in conformity with the party guidelines and resolutions reached at all levels as the elections went smoothly in the ward, local government and state levels.

He called on the committee to ask the petitioners — TOP members — to produce those that screened their purported aspirants, those that conducted their purported congresses, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission that supervised their congresses, the security agencies present at the venue they claimed they used among others, as demanded by electoral guidelines.

Akere said the governor had no hands in the decision of the Appeal Committee, contrary to TOP speculations, noting that their decisions were based on facts presented before them.

“For TOP members to say they participated in the ward, local and state congresses is laughable and it amounts to building something on nothing because they know there was no basis for such; and the allegation of nepotism levelled against Governor Oyetola is not only baseless, but is also spurious. He who alleges must prove. All they wanted is juicy appointments.

“Their prayer asking the Reconciliation Committee to recognise their congresses is misplaced and distractive because the committee is to appeal to frayed nerves to give peace a chance and not deciding on the long-concluded congress.

“The committee should take note that this so-called TOP members have constituted themselves into a team more vicious than the opposition. They don’t have respect for the governor or the leadership of the party headed by Prince Gboyega Famodun. The manner in which they deride the programmes and achievements of the governor shows clearly that some of them have made up their minds on leaving the party if they cannot get what they want.

“They are already holding meetings with the opposition and a faction of the said opposition in the state now takes the responsibility of protecting and defending them as a matter of life and death.”

“The TOP members have no right whatsoever to dwell on issues that do not concern them as their demand for resignation of Mr. Governor from the APC National Caretaker Committee connotes.

“The governor as the leader and father to all is always ready to embrace and welcome back those willing to retrace their steps. This committee in the spirit of the minority having their say while majority have their way should appeal to TOP members to join hands with Mr. Governor in sustaining the progressive legacy in Osun State.

“And finally, this committee should implore the former governor and current Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Aregbesola, to rein in TOP members because he publicly declared that he is their patron and that he supports whatever they do,” he said.

The Chairman, Osun APC Elders’ Caucus, called “Igbimo Agba”, Sola Akinwumi; Senate spokesman and the lawmaker representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Bashiru Ajibola; former Osun Deputy Governors Senator Christopher Iyiola Omisore; Mrs. Titilayo Ponle; Prince Adeleke Adewoyin; Deputy Speaker, Osun House of Assembly,  Simeon Popoola; the party Chairman-elect, Prince Gboyega Famodun; reaffirmed the commitment of the party’s leadership to ensure unity and oneness.

They passed vote of confidence in the governor and the leadership and members of the party, just as they described the congresses held in the state as most credible and acceptable by all, noting that the leadership of the party would not be distracted by any form of internal or external force.

The Chairman of the committee, Sen.  Abdulahi Adamu, noted that their presence at the Government House was part of efforts to ensure fair hearing, equity and justice, as it would serve as a forum for the party leadership to respond to and defend some of the allegations raised and petitions filed before it.

Governor Oyetola commended the committee for taking the bull by the horns, just as he expressed confidence in its ability to carry out the task with fairness and equity.
