    Kwara Assembly suspends PDP member

Kwara State House of Assembly has slammed 14 days legislative suspension on a member representing Ilorin South Constituency, Jimoh Agboola.

He is the only opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker in the 24-member legislature.

Agboola’s ‘reprimand’ is coming on the heels of an earlier suspension before he was recently ‘pardoned’ and placed under ‘investigation’

His suspension followed the adoption of the report of House Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition titled: “Contempt and Breach of Privilege by Raheem Agboola”, which was presented by the Chairman, Abdulganiyu Salau, representing Omupo Constituency.

Salau said the ‘reprimand’ of Agboola was recommended for featuring on a radio programme where he allegedly instigated the public against the state government and the assembly.

PDP spokesman Tunde Ashaolu described the assembly’s action as height of injustice.

Lagos not allocating land for permanent structures, says commissioner

Lagos State Government has debunked insinuations that it was allocating the land earmarked for the Lekki/Epe coastal road alignment in Eti-Osa Local Government to private developers.

There have been agitations that the government had sold the land following the rise of some structures on the land.

But Commissioner for Information Gbenga Omotoso assured the people that that was not the case.

Omotoso and his Physical Planning and Urban Development counterpart, Idris Salako, visited the site yesterday.

Omotoso, who addressed reporters later, said the outcries and agitations were legitimate.

He, however, said the government allowed temporary structures on the land to prevent miscreants from occupying it.

He said: “There have been allegations that the government has been allocating the land to people for some other uses. I will like to put it on record now that there has been no allocation of land here. What we have done is to license people to use this place temporarily. Nobody is permitted to build any permanent structure here; what you see here are temporary structures. Anytime we need to continue work on the coastal road, the work will continue again. Nobody has any permission to come and build something that is permanent here.”

Protest rocks Ondo poly over unpaid salaries

Protest yesterday rocked Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State over suspension of union activities by the management and 13 months unpaid salaries.

The management on Tuesday announced suspension of activities of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP), following an alleged plan by the unions to embark on strike.

During yesterday’s protest, members of the two unions blocked the school entrance gate, chanting solidarity songs. They carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘Pay our 13-month salary’, ‘Akeredolu, come to our aide’, ‘Ogundahunsi must go’, ‘Our members are suffering and dying’, among others.

    27 years after, Ijebu-Igbo gets Oba-elect

Ogun State Government said yesterday that an Oba-elect for the stool of the Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government had emerged.

It said the emergence followed the voting of 10 out of the 11 warrant chiefs appointed by the government to elect candidate for the vacant stool of Orimolusi.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Afolabi Afuape, made this known while speaking with The Nation.

He said: “An Oba-elect has emerged as Orimolusi of Ijebu-Igbo, but I have not got details of who the Oba-elect is.”

Afuape said six warrant chiefs voted for the successful Oba-elect.

The Nation, however, gathered that the Oba-elect is Prince Lawrence Jayeola Adebajo.

He polled six votes to defeat Prince Soliu Sadiku, who got four votes.

Until his emergence, Prince Adebajo is the Balogun of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Oke Padi, Ijebu-Igbo.

The 11- man committee of warrant chiefs, with Prof. Ademola Adedeji as the chairman and Mr. Fatayo Bolujo (secretary), has Prof. Yinka Balogun, Prof. Kola Balogun, Prof. Layi Ogunkoya, Chief Ademola Okusanya, Chief P. O. Omotara, Prof. Bisi Ogunfowora, Mr. Olusegun Olusanya, Prof. B. Obigbesan and Prof. Ayo Ogunye as members.

Ijebu-Igbo town has been without a monarch for 27 years, following the death of Oba Samuel Adetayo, Ikupakude IV, the Orimolusi, in May 1994.

Hopefully, the emergence of Prince Adebajo and subsequent confirmation and coronation later by the government will end the 27 years interregnum.

  • Jail break imminent in Ondo, says Akeredolu

Jail break imminent in Ondo, says Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has cried out that jail break is imminent, as soldiers have been withdrawn from correctional centres.

The governor, who condemned the action of the Army, said it was a way of inducing steps toward jail breaks.

He spoke after being briefed by Police Commissioner Oyediran Oyeyemi.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu wondered why soldiers would be withdrawn from correctional centres and facilities belonging to the Federal Government.

Soldiers had since last year been withdrawn from checkpoints and black spots across the state.

The governor said he was bothered about the effect of the soldiers’ withdrawal on the security situation.

He said findings into the remote cause of the action showed that it was an order from above without corresponding details.

Akeredolu said he had met security heads in the state and directed them to take over responsibility of internal security.

The statement said: “The situation notwithstanding, proactive efforts have been made to secure these centres so as not to allow premeditated jail breaks, as whoever gave order to withdraw the soldiers was in the process of encouraging such.”

“While we believe that the Federal Government has a duty to protect the prisons, we are more concerned about the security of our people across the state. A jail break will not only threaten the peaceful atmosphere we are enjoying in the state, it will also pose danger to our people.

“The governor has met security heads and the police have since taken up their responsibility of internal security by deploying armed men and officers in these correctional centres.

“Similarly, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), whose assignment is to secure Federal Government facilities, has also deployed armed officers in the correctional facilities.

“Akeredolu has directed the deployment of men of the State Security Network (Amotekun) to complement the Police and the NSCDC. This is to ensure that any premeditated action is tamed and resisted with commensurate force.”
