Causes of building collapse, by Tribunal

A six-man tribunal set up by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the Ikoyi collapsed building, has submitted its report to the governor.

A statement by the Chairman, Toyin Ayinde, said: ‘Building collapse is rooted in the collapse of values, morals and ethics, which we need to work on as a nation.”

The statement added: “Having spent approximately six weeks on this assignment, we now wish to make our submission to Governor Sanwo-Olu, who constituted the tribunal. We need to note, however, that building collapse is rooted in the collapse of values, morals and ethics, which we need to work on as a nation. We cannot sow the wind and not expect to reap the whirlwind. Therefore, ethics and due diligence need to be restored.

“To execute this assignment successfully, the tribunal visited the project site for a general assessment; coordinated activities of the consultants who conducted tests on the site; received and reviewed documents from relevant MDAs; conducted 35 interview sessions; interrogated 91 persons; requested and received a total of 21 memoranda; and accessed the home of the late C.E.O. of Fourscore Heights Limited, Mr. Olufemi Osibona, with a view to gathering any other useful/relevant information to support the tribunal’s fact-finding mission.”

“The tribunal further received submissions from professional associations, groups and individuals that helped in formulating the recommendations proposed. The tribunal had the opportunity to access the home of the late CEO of Fourscore Heights Limited, in the presence of members of his family, where some documents that were scanned helped in gaining further insights into the case, particularly the processes that led to the construction and eventual collapse. The tribunal also hosted a representation of the developer’s company comprising two legal firms

“It is on record that in their first and second appearances, the lawyers had expressed the fact that they were external lawyers to the company and had little knowledge about the case in hand. We were, however, later to receive a request from the same lawyers (five weeks after the collapse) requesting to make an independent investigation in view of a suggestion, to them only, of possible sabotage. The tribunal was of the opinion that pursuing such a cause was equal to mocking all of those who lost their lives in the collapsed building, and for which there had been no closure yet. The lawyers were advised to seek permission from the state authorities.

“We are therefore pleased to present to Mr. Governor the report of the inquiry carried out, containing the various findings, and the recommendations, which we hope the government would be able to implement in order to bring a lasting solution to building collapse, not only in Lagos State, but also nationally.

“We therefore seek protection as members of this tribunal to be seen as having discharged this assignment to the best of our ability, without sentiments, and that we have acted based on the documents that were made available to us, as well as the information gathered from all the witnesses who appeared before the tribunal.”

He added: “In January 2021, I kicked off the COVID-19 Relief Scheme for the vulnerable people in the Lagos East Senatorial District and it has been running since then. This covers about 2,500 constituents.

“I also facilitated four blocks of 24 classrooms with complements of furniture and 16 toilets for Aga Primary School in Ikorodu, 200 solar-powered street lights on the Ikorodu campus of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH). The building of a 40-bed health facility and dental centre is under construction.

In November 2021, in up-skilling and enhancing the capacity of MSMEs in the district, I also organised a one-day Business Workshop for 1,000 MSMEs across the senatorial district. Major take-aways from the seminar were the gift to the participants of the well-researched knowledge packs, “The entrepreneurial kit”, comprising seven valuable business topics on: tax management, strategy; financial management; digital technology; marketing and communications; human capital management and legal. “These are topics authored by reputable business consulting firms such as: KPMG, Deloitte, ACCA, Banwo and Ighodalo, Verraki Business Solutions etc. I initiated a N100,000,000 (One Hundred Million Naira) Constituency Intervention Revolving Loan at 6 per cent interest rate, which will be enhanced by additional 100 Million Naira from the Bank of Industry (BOI).

“In Ibeju-Lekki, two blocks of six classrooms are under construction at RCM Primary School, Iwerekun, Ibeju-Lekki, while in Kosofe Local Government, one block of three classrooms are also underway at Ajelogo Primary School. An ICT centre is coming up at the Igbobi College “I moved a motion calling on the Federal Government to intervene in the Ikorodu/Sagamu Road and Ikorodu/Itoikin/Epe Road. Our intervention with necessary follow-up and leveraging on our network has yielded positive outcomes, as the Federal Government has included the funding of Ikorodu-Shagamu, in the SUKUK Financing programme and the capital raising for the Sukuk was concluded on December 2, 2021 for about N250 billion. The Ikorodu-Shagamu road is a priority with about N8.8 earmarked for its construction.

“Also, the Ikorodu-Itoikin road has been included in the 2022 budget and the procurement for its rehabilitation is ongoing.”

    Kumuyi holds programme for youths

Worried by the menace of moral decadence among teenagers globally, and determined to make a positive change, a renowned global evangelist and holiness preacher, Pastor W. F. Kumuyi, will convene a programme, the Global Youth Convention (GYC), with the theme: ‘Impact’.

It is designed as a five-day programme, which is scheduled to hold from January 5 to 9 when Dr. Kumuyi will address fundamental issues affecting teenagers, undergraduates and young professionals/adults.

Prof. O. S. He said: “The GYC Impact programme is specially designed for young teenagers in high (secondary) schools, campus students & workers, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and young adults/professionals.

“It is also packaged to give the participants a fresh start in the new year with a line-up of speakers with proven track records in their fields of endeavour.”

Although the programme will be anchored by Pastor Kumuyi, he will be assisted by special guest speakers, including boardroom guru, Ibukun Awosika, business innovator, Iyinola Aboyeji, and guest gospel music artiste, Dunsin Oyekan.

Fatima Foundation donates borehole to community

President of FCF Alhaja Bintu-Fatima Tinubu said she was excited the project was completed on time.

Alhaja Tinubu, who is the Iyalode of Lagos, said: “I am so happy today and I want to thank God for this idea. This project makes everyone happy and I’m happy that the project marks the end of 2021.”

She hailed Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly Wasiu Eshilokun Sanni for helping out with the place where the project was sited.

“I  called deputy Speaker to let him know I want this project on Lagos Island and in 30 minutes, he called back and gave me all the details needed. Everyone made the job so easy that the project was completed in two weeks. I’m so grateful to God and the people of the community as well for cooperating with officials on the field.”

Eshilokun thanked Alhaja Tinubu for paying attention to the needs of the people of Lagos Island.

He said: “I was surprised when mama called me that she wants to do a project in our community. At her age, we ought to be given her but she still wants to help without making noise about it. We are so encouraged by her actions. She never gets tired of giving and we are grateful for this project.

“The beauty of this project is that it will serve three wards connected to Oritafaaji. It is a strategic project which will make water more easily accessible for the people.”

He promised to help with necessary expenses for the running of the project.

He said: “I can vividly recall that this area had a government water facility when we were growing up and this has now been restored by Alhaja Tinubu. What she has done today is just the tip of the iceberg, I have seen her do more and she will also do more in this area.”

  • Red, Blue rail line projects still on course, says Sanwo-Olu

Red, Blue rail line projects still on course, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised the level of work done on the Blue and Red rail line projects.

He hoped the bridge component of the Ikeja station would be completed before schedule, to ease gridlock.

Sanwo-Olu addressed reporters yesterday after inspecting the project sites in Ikeja, Yaba, Oyingbo/Ebute Metta and Marina.

The Blue line is designed to start from Okokomiko and terminate at Marina, while the Red line runs from Agbado to Marina.

The governor said the inspection and monitoring would be done quarterly, to hasten work.

He hailed the contractors for working as scheduled, noting that work on the project should be delivered as promised.

Sanwo-Olu said: “Our promise is on course, and we believe that before the end of this year, we will see trains on top of these tracks. This is our commitment and we will continue to monitor and check ourselves.

“What we are seeing today is a good development from what we saw the last time we were here about three or four months ago. I am happy to report, as you all have seen that works are going on as scheduled. Despite today being a public holiday, the contractors are on site.

“The Ikeja Red line iconic station was at the foundation level when we came here last, but today it’s on the second floor, working towards getting to the fourth floor. Hopefully the bridge component will be finished before time, to ease traffic congestion on that axis.

“The Yaba station is out. The last time we were here, they were at excavation stage, but right now they are decking for the second floor, and they are on strict order to keep to deadline.

“At Ebute Meta, there will be an overpass from Murtala Mohammed Way up to Apapa Road. They are launching the columns, and the station is far ahead because they have completed it. The elevated Marina Station, about 200 metres, is the most iconic for the Blue line. Just one more floor is needed before a full ramp is done. All the beams are to be launched and they have been precast and stored at the National Arts Theatre, which means they should be launched within six weeks.

“Our promise is still on course that trains will start working before the end of the year.”

  • Akeredolu dares PDP: report me to EFCC

Akeredolu dares PDP: report me to EFCC

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has dared the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to report him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), over the alleged N500million spent on a concert tagged: ‘Countdown Show to Herald 2022’.

Spokesman for the Ondo PDP, Kennedy Peretei, had in a statement alleged that N500millon was spent on the concert anchored by the governor’s son in-law, Michael Olatunde.

Akeredolu, in a statement by Information and Orientation Commissioner Donald Ojogo, challenged the PDP to show proof that he registered 13 companies in 2017.

He urged the opposition party to publish the names of directors of the companies as well as the names of the companies.

The statement said: “Their assertions in respect of 13 companies they claimed were registered by the governor’s family in 2017 without evidence expose the juvenile and pedestrian composure of the PDP. It is sheer waste of precious media space to assert without evidence to prove.

“On the alleged expenditure of N500,000,000 (Five Hundred Million Naira) by the Ministry of Information on the ‘Countdown Show to Herald 2022’, it’s not just laughable, but presents the PDP as most unserious. The inconsistency in their lies is legendary, as their first release had indicated N200,000,000 in respect of same subject. The public deserves to know more. Therefore, the PDP must hurry to report this to the EFCC for investigation.

“While it is clear that the insidious naked dance of the PDP manifests the height of idleness and political depression, the party’s persistence in the display of uncanny posture on the path of unbelievable lies calls to question whether or not the PDP respects the Ondo State public at all. No serious public takes such beer parlour talks seriously.”

  • ‘How Yoruba Nation agitators plan to stop Osun, Ekiti polls’

‘How Yoruba Nation agitators plan to stop Osun, Ekiti polls’

A fresh crisis has engulfed the Yoruba Nation, as the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), yesterday warned Abuja-based lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, for speaking on behalf of Sunday Adeyemo, popularly called Sunday Igboho.

The Nation learnt that a recent statement by Olajengbesi on Igboho saying his client was not at war with President Muhammadu Buhari or governors, had sparked reactions from the Yoruba groups.

But the umbrella body faulted the lawyer for painting Igboho as someone who had surrendered the Yoruba Nation struggle.

Also, Olajengbesi was carpeted for attacking Prof. Banji Akintoye for his position on self-determination struggle that there would be no governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states this year.

The body in a statement yesterday said: “The public should take note that an Osun State politician/Abuja based lawyer, Mr. Pelumi Olajengbesi, does not speak for Sunday Igboho, neither is he involved in the Yoruba Nation self-determination struggle.

“The work of Olajengbesi, which the Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Struggle hired and paid him for ends at defending the rights of the oppressed aides and relations of Ighoho arrested by the DSS on July 1, 2021 in Ibadan, Oyo State, at an Abuja High Court.

“Anything Olajengbesi says afterwards should be considered as his personal opinion and not that of Ighoho. As our lawyer, he is supposed to speak to the public on our instruction.”

right to do whatever he likes in his personal capacity, however, we are surprised he could be wildly unethical in his approach by choosing to use social media to attack Prof. Akintoye’s new year statement on behalf of the Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Movement.

“We at Ilana Omo Oodua, being the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, consider Olajengbesi’s action as a betrayal of trust that we repose in him and an abuse of the ethics of his legal profession. He took advantage of his association with our movement to perpetrate his personal agenda to our own detriment, which is against the run of play.”

Last year, the leader of the Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Prof Akintoye, also resigned as the chairman of a group known as the Nigerian Indigenous Nationalities Alliance for Self-Determination, after crisis engulfed the coalition.

    Ibadan chief mourns

The Bada Balogun of Ibadanland, Oloye Adegboyega Adegoke, has joined Ibadan indigenes, Oyo State Government, Council of Chiefs and Royal Families in mourning the demise of Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogunguniso I, who joined his ancestors yesterday.

Adegoke, in a statement by his media aide, Raji Adebayo, said despite a life well spent by the first-class monarch, his death was a great loss to the people of Ibadan, Oyo State and Nigeria.

He described the late Olubadan as a visionary traditional ruler with purposeful leadership while on the throne.

The statement said: “Oba Adetunji was known for his consistency in promoting peaceful and harmonious coexistence. He had respect for religions and diverse cultures in the state and country.

“Oba Adetunji successfully carried on with the legacies of his forefathers, dating back to the 16th century, with an intentional focus to uphold the beautiful traditions of hospitality, respect for authorities and communal development that have always defined the throne.

“He was a wonderful, excellent king who stood by tradition during his reign. He did not allow anyone to torpedo the Ibadan hierarchical succession plan of ascending the throne.”

Adegoke hailed the monarch for his maturity and wise counsel to leaders and indigenes, saying he advised the younger generation on the path of good education and entrepreneurship.

He prayed for the repose of the highly revered monarch.

Igboho’s team suffers setback as lawyer resigns

Pelumi Olajengbesi, one of the Nigeria-based lawyers for a self-determination campaigner, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has resigned from his client’s legal team.

Olajengbesi, the managing partner, Law Corridor, in a terse statement yesterday on his official Facebook page, announced his registration.

This is happening amid backlash from the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), that the Abuja-based lawyer does not speak for Igboho or is involved in the Yoruba Nation self-determination struggle.

He said: “This is to officially announce my resignation as a counsel involved further in any matter relating to Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho and the Yoruba Nation agitators.

“As a firm, we are satisfied with our little best in contributing to providing legal solutions and representations to Igboho and associated Yoruba Nation agitators as far as ensuring the protection and enforcement of their rights in this matter.

“We were able to secure the release of 12 persons brutally and unlawfully arrested by the reckless State Security Service (SSS), and also secured the release of an innocent herbalist equally unlawfully arrested and detained by the SSS. We have two persons with ongoing terrorism trials at the Federal High Court and our firm will continue and close the trial, having begun their matter.

“While thanking everyone, particularly Chief Yomi Aliyu, SAN, for the opportunity and freehand service, Dr. Olasupo Ojo for his fair leadership and Chief Femi Falana for allowing his industry to be tapped and for the moral support, I most respectfully wish to now step aside.

“I have stated ab initio that the scope of my work will only be within the purview of my professional duty as a lawyer to Igboho and his aides. I am a strong believer in constitutional democracy, civil liberty and human rights, which include the right to self-determination, but I am neither a Yoruba nation agitator nor a member of any like organisation.

“My reaction to Prof. Akintoye was not to undermine the Yoruba struggle, but is based off my personal convictions, which I am entitled to. I do hope my friends in the struggle will allow me enjoy the benefit of my right to such a choice as a person of thought and conscience.”

Reacting to the resignation last night, the Ilana Omo Oodua said nobody hired Olajengbesi in the first instance.
