Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi of the Federal High Court, Osogbo, Osun State, has ordered the remand of one Babatunde Ogini for the alleged murder of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Ebenezer Akinola, during the 2023 General Election.
The late Akinola was reportedly killed in front of his father’s house in the Araromi Irojo area of Ilesa in March 2023, prompting the then Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, to call for the arrest of those responsible.
On Tuesday, Ogini was arraigned by counsel to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms.
According to the charge, Ogini and others, still at large, conspired to kill Akinola on March 17, 2023, at Ilesa East, Osun State, contrary to Sections 316, 319(1), and 324 of the Criminal Code. The defendant was also alleged to have been in possession of a pump-action rifle.
Ogini, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The IGP prosecutor, Mrs. Bola Adaraloye, requested that the accused be remanded, noting her intention to amend the charge before the next hearing.
Defence counsel, Barrister Abimbola Ige, informed the court that a formal bail application dated July 25, 2023, had already been filed and served on the prosecution.
Justice Ajayi declined to entertain the bail issue and ordered that Ogini be remanded at the Correctional Facility until October 14, 2025, when the case will come up for hearing.
Thousands of students and youths from the Southwest region under the aegis of Coalition of Yoruba Students and Youth Movement (COYSYM) on Tuesday staged a massive protest in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to tackle what they described as unpatriotic attacks and orchestrated blackmail against Dangote Refinery.
The students who commended President Bola Tinubu for the courage in the removal of fuel subsidy fingered trade unions in the oil and gas sector including Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) as been behind the attack on the nation’s private Refinery.
The group also said it has uncovered, through credible information, that PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and DAPPMAN, in collaboration with certain international oil companies and traders, are deliberately instigating disruptions to frustrate Dangote Refinery.
It added that there are multiple attempts to obstruct its operations and undermine its credibility, noting that the acts of economic sabotage must not be tolerated.
COYSYM is a united front of all Yoruba Indigenous Youth and Student Organisations across Nigeria, including the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), Yoruba Council Worldwide, and the Coalition of Osun State Youth and Students Association (COSSYA), among others.
The protesters dressed in customised t-shirts and fez caps defied the early morning rain to assemble at the Iwo Road underbridge, carried banners, placards, and sang solidarity songs to enlighten members of the public on the threat against the benefit of the refinery in transforming the oil and gas sector.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards read, “Government supports Dangote Refinery Now. Support Dangote, Save Nigerians. Stop Sabotage. Support Dangote. Dangote Refinery is Nigeria’s Pride”, “PENGASSAN: Nigeria’s alpha and omega, stop holding Nigeria hostage. Free Dangote,”, Our oil, our right, support Dangote”.
Others read, “Don’t kill Dangote Refinery”, “Dangote Refinery is the pride of Nigeria”, “We kick against the anti-masses policies of PENGASSAN, DAPPMAN and NUPENG. Stop sabotaging fuel supply in Nigeria. Let the masses breathe”, “PENGASSAN, DAPPMAN and NUPENG: Stop causing problems in the oil sector in Nigeria”, among others.
The protest, which led to a heavy traffic jam at the Iwo Road end of the Ibadan-Ife Expressway, saw many commuters stranded for minutes.
Traffic officers, including officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police, among others, had a hectic time controlling traffic as commuters trying to use the road inward into the capital city suffered mild delays.
Addressing the massive crowd, the National President, Comrade Benedict Adetunji, urged the Federal Government to prioritise the allocation of crude oil to all Nigerian-owned refineries at fair and competitive rates.
He said the group embarked on the protest rally out of a deep sense of patriotism and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability.
He also called for the stoppage of crude to foreign refineries at cheaper prices than to local refineries, as well as an end to the importation of petroleum products, and support for domestic refining.
Reading the position paper while addressing the crowd, Comrade Adetunji said, “We bring you warm and revolutionary greetings from the Coalition of Yoruba Students and Youth Movement (COYSYM) a united front of all Yoruba Indigenous Youth and Student Organisations across Nigeria, including the National Association of Oduduwa Students (NAOS), Yoruba Council Worldwide, and the Coalition of Osun State Youth and Students Association (COSSYA), among others.
“We are compelled by the negative and anti-national activities of PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and DAPPMAN to present this position paper today, 7th October 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, the political headquarters of the Southwest, out of our deep sense of patriotism and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability.
“First and foremost, we commend Your Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for your bold and visionary leadership, particularly your courage in the removal of fuel subsidy, which has brought remarkable improvement to fuel supply and market stability across the nation. Your steadfast drive for industrialisation and economic recovery remains commendable.
“However, we express our deep concern over the recent unpatriotic attacks and orchestrated blackmail by PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and DAPPMAN against the Dangote Refinery, a world-class facility that stands as the pride of Nigeria and the entire African continent. This refinery, situated within our Yoruba region, represents a symbol of industrial hope, self-reliance, and national rebirth. It deserves support and protection, not sabotage.
“Your Excellency, the survival and success of Dangote Refinery is crucial to achieving your administration’s vision of making Nigeria a production-driven economy rather than one dependent on importation. No nation grows by importing what it can produce. The only path to true economic revival lies in increasing our export capacity and reducing unnecessary importation.
“For decades, PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and DAPPMAN have crippled Nigeria’s oil sector through incessant strikes, policy manipulations, and industrial sabotage. Their leadership has placed personal and corporate interests above national progress. These unions, often aligned with import cartels, have benefited from fuel importation at the expense of local refining. Their existence, in its current form, has done more harm than good to Nigeria’s economy.
“As the sons and daughters of the Yoruba Nation, and as the hosts of the Dangote Refinery, we call on Your Excellency, our leader and father, to intervene decisively. Let us not allow these saboteurs to destroy what has taken decades and billions of naira to build. Dangote Refinery is not just a private investment; it is a national asset capable of providing employment, stabilizing fuel supply, and saving billions in foreign exchange.”
The group “urges the federal government to prioritise the allocation of crude oil to all Nigerian-owned refineries at fair and competitive rates.
“Stop the sale of crude to foreign refineries at cheaper prices than to our local refineries.
“End the importation of petroleum products and support domestic refining.
“A historical lesson must guide us: in the past, Nigeria’s textile industry was the second-largest employer after the Federal Government, but reckless importation policies led to its total collapse. Even in advanced economies like the United States, President Donald Trump introduced high import tariffs to protect domestic industries and jobs. Nigeria must do the same to protect its strategic sectors.
“We have also uncovered, through credible information, that PENGASSAN, NUPENG, and DAPPMAN, in collaboration with certain international oil companies and traders such as Trafigura, Vitol, Glencore, BP, and Shell, are deliberately instigating disruptions to frustrate Dangote Refinery. Reports indicate multiple attempts to obstruct its operations and undermine its credibility. These are acts of economic sabotage that must not be tolerated.
“Your Excellency, Alhaji Aliko Dangote must not be made to regret his patriotic investment in Nigeria. Rather, he deserves national protection and encouragement. His contributions toward industrialisation, employment generation, and economic diversification embody your Renewed Hope Agenda.
“As Yoruba students and youth, known for our love, unity, and hospitality, we appeal passionately to Your Excellency and all Yoruba leaders, Royal Fathers, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to rise in defence of Dangote Refinery and reject all agents of economic regression.
“Nigeria will only rise when Nigerians believe in and support Nigeria. No foreign power will build this nation for us. The time has come to reward patriotism and punish sabotage. We remain committed to a better, stronger, and self-sufficient Nigeria.”
Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Oyedele-Salako, has called on members of Generation Z—young people born between 1997 and 2012—to channel their creativity, talents, and technological skills toward spreading positivity and promoting worthy values rather than negativity online.
Speaking at the ‘Trust Teens Conference 2025’, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, the deputy governor, who is also a civil engineer, delivered an inspiring address titled “Teens Who Influence.” The annual conference, hosted by the Trust Teens Community (TTC), is regarded as Africa’s biggest teenagers’ gathering, aimed at nurturing leadership and positive influence among young people.
Salako-Oyedele urged Gen Z participants to always consider their schools, families, communities, and the nation in their actions—both offline and online. She emphasized that in the digital era, where social media defines much of young people’s identity, they hold the power to create content that uplifts rather than tears down.
“Think about your school, your family, your community,” she told the teens. “Who can you encourage? Who can you defend when others are silent? Even online, you have a choice: do you spread negativity, or do you create content that inspires and informs? True influence is not about the noise you make; it’s about the lives you change.”
The deputy governor shared personal experiences from her career journey, recalling her days as a civil engineering student, when very few women were represented in her field. She said her determination to succeed was not only for herself but also to pave the way for other young women who would come after her.
“When I studied Civil Engineering at university, there were very few women in my class,” she said. “I knew that my success wasn’t just about me; it was also about every girl who would come after me. Without planning it, I became a role model in that space. People were watching: could she hold her own? Could she deliver? That realisation shaped me. I understood that influence meant showing up, not for applause, but so others could believe that they, too, belonged.”
Salako-Oyedele highlighted the importance of consistency and discipline as the foundation of true influence, explaining that real success is not built on viral fame but on steady commitment to values, purpose, and hard work.
“Be consistent,” she advised. “Influence is not built in one viral moment; it is built in the little things you do daily—showing up to class prepared, finishing what you start, keeping your word even when no one is watching. That’s how people learn to take you seriously. Most influencers you admire today didn’t rise overnight. They kept at it when nobody was watching. Consistency is the bridge between small beginnings and big impact.”
She added that occupying a high political office has not changed her core values, stressing that integrity and authenticity are the true markers of leadership and influence.
“Today, I serve as the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, but I can assure you this high office has not changed who I am,” she said. “I remain grounded, guided by my values and my faith. People still know me as the same person I was before politics, and that is because I have strived to be consistent. Influence lasts when people can trust your character, not just your achievements.
“Your influence grows not from perfection, but from persistence and consistency. People believe in you when they can trust your word, when they see you stand by your values, and when you don’t lose yourself, no matter where life takes you.
“You don’t have to wait until you’re older to make an impact. Influence starts now, in your schools, in your families, in your communities.
Start small. Stay true. Be consistent. And above all, learn, connect, and take something away that will shape your future.”
Speaking earlier at the event, which showcased start-up ideas for funding, including First Aid medical Apps and a waste-to-wealth kit developed by teenagers, the Convener, Miss Deborah Dada, revealed that in the last 17 months, TTC has impacted over 6,000 teenagers through the execution of 25 teen-oriented projects and the setting up of 15 learning centres in six communities.
Miss Dada added that the organisation had invested over N20 million in the delivery of youth-focused programmes, stressing that it envisions a world where African teenagers become the spark for generational cycles of wholeness, leadership, and societal transformation.

The Founder and Group Managing Director of CapitalSage Holdings, John Alamu, has disclosed that processing cocoa into finished products for export is now far more profitable to Nigeria’s economy than exporting raw cocoa beans.
Alamu, who spoke on Monday while giving insights into his business journey, revealed that while an exporter of raw cocoa earns about $8,000 per tonne, the value could rise up to 30 times more when processed into finished products like chocolate.
“Export raw cocoa, and you make $8,000 per tonne. Turn it into butter, and you earn six times more. Make chocolate, and the value rises up to 30 times,” Alamu said.
He explained that this philosophy of value addition has been the driving force behind CapitalSage’s evolution into a fully integrated conglomerate.
Founded in 2014 with a startup capital of ₦100,000, Alamu said his venture has grown into a diversified business group with interests spanning agribusiness, finance, technology, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Under the CapitalSage umbrella is Johnvents Group, which has become a major player in Africa’s agricultural value chain.
The company operates across multiple commodities, including cocoa, sesame, legumes, cashew, soya, edible nuts, rice, and rubber, generating millions of dollars in annual revenue.
He noted that the cocoa division anchors exports of butter, liquor, cake, and powder, while the sesame and legumes unit sources premium-grade sesame, soya, and grains from across Africa.
The cashew and edible nuts division, he added, expands Africa’s footprint in the global nut value chain.
Similarly, the edible oil, feed, and water unit powers agro-industrial complexes, employing hundreds of women, while the rice and rubber segment contributes to food and industrial crop security.
Speaking in a recent Forbes Africa Independence Day Edition, Alamu recalled how his entrepreneurial journey began:
“We started with ₦100,000 in 2014, offering small loans to farmers and market women in rural Nigeria. Today, we’re building global businesses from Africa.”
He disclosed that CapitalSage Holdings now employs over 2,000 people directly and supports more than 10,000 farmers, with operations spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Alamu emphasized that, beyond corporate success, his mission is economic independence for Africa.
“The next struggle, like independence, is economic freedom. That requires courage, disruption, and African confidence,” he said.
In recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s economy, Alamu recently received the Business Conglomerate Leadership Award at the Marketing Edge Awards.
His achievements, industry analysts say, underscore a vital lesson for Africa’s growth that the continent’s economic future lies not in raw exports, but in value addition, transformation, and visionary leadership.
A member of the House of Representatives, Olusola Fatoba, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for approving the establishment of the Forest Security Service, describing it as a bold step toward strengthening national security, revitalizing agriculture, and protecting rural communities across the country.
Speaking on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state capital, Fatoba, said the creation of the forest security guard was necessary following the incessant cases of attacks on farmers, kidnappings, and infiltration of Nigeria’s forests by criminal elements who use them as operational bases.
The chairman of the House Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values, noted that the security outfit would help address the country’s growing security challenges, particularly those affecting farmlands and forest areas.
Fatoba added that the newly established forest guard would not only safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians but also empower the farmers to return to their farmlands without fear, a development he said would restore confidence in agricultural production and help stabilize the nation’s food supply chain.
He expressed optimism that the initiative would create employment opportunities at the grassroots level and increase food production for both local consumption and export.
The lawmaker, representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II, called on the 36 state governors to promptly key into the federal government’s initiative by giving full support and cooperation to ensure its successful implementation in their respective states.
He emphasized that strong collaboration between federal and state governments would help reclaim the forests that have long been hideouts for kidnappers and terrorists and transform them once again into safe zones for productive activities such as farming, ranching, and tourism.
He said, “I wish to sincerely appreciate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his visionary leadership and approval for the establishment of the Nigeria Forest Security Services.
“This bold and timely initiative is a significant step towards addressing the pressing challenges of insecurity, especially in our rural and agrarian communities.”
“At a time when insecurity has deterred many from engaging in farming and discouraged foreign investment, this move will not only boost food security but also strengthen our economy through agriculture and non-oil financial inflows.
“It sends a strong signal to both citizens and the international community that Nigeria is committed to creating a safe and enabling environment for investment and growth,” he added.
