Circular Road: Oyo pays N264m as first tranche of compensation to property owners

Oyo state government has begun payment of the first tranche compensation to property owners  in Ajota to Alaago axis affected by the construction of the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road.

No dispute over choice of new monarch in Imedu community – Onibeju, others

Leading monarchs in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State yesterday clarified that there was no dispute over the selection of Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu as Oba-elect of Imedu community, contrary to report in a section of the media.

The monarchs, Onibeju of Ibeju , Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Razaq Oguntolu 1;  the Onise of Ise, Oba AbdulGaniyu Adebowale Adegbesan, and the Baale of Imedu, High Chief Mubashiru Sodiq Sangodeyi noted that Imedu has remained peaceful as ever following the unanimous selection of Saliu as the Oba-elect the subsequent approval of his selection by the Ibeju-Lekki Cheiftaincy Committee headed by Oba Oguntolu.

Oba Oguntolu explained that due process was followed in the selection and approval of Saliu as monarch-elect.

He said: “When the Imedu Community led by Baale Mubashiru Sadiq Sangodeyi formally presented Prince Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu Sangodeyi as the Oba-elect of Imedu to the Ibeju-Lekki Chieftaincy Committee, it took us nothing less than three months before granting him approval. We did our due diligence and ensured his selection as Oba-elect was not only unanimous, but also rancour-free.”

“We then asked the Oba-elect to visit the palaces of some existing Obas in Ibeju-Lekki for appraisal, which he did. All the Obas he visited, including the Onise of Isel, who is the consenting authority for Imedu gave him a clean bill of health. Even the Oba of Lepia kingdom, Oba Adeleke Akibu Ismaila had initially supported him, before raising an objection for personal reasons later. Oba Ismaila’s objection was based on the erroneous claim that he is the consenting authority for Imedu, whereas he is not,” he added.

Onibeju urged the Lagos state Government, to expressly approve the presentation of staff of office to Prince Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu following his selection and approval as monarch-elect.

He urged the Oba of Lepia and others who submitted petitions to the state government challenging Saliu’s emergence as Oba-elect to allow peace to reign.

In his comments, Oba Adegbesan of Ise Land explained that he is the consenting authority for Imedu , noting that the Oba of Lepia has no such right over the town..

He said: “ By convention,   Baale Mubashiru Sangodeyi of Imedu ought to be the Oba of the town since he is still alive, but he has ceded that right to Oba-elect Ibrahim  Adebowale Saliu with the consent of his people. ”

n his words, Baale Mubashiru Sodiq Sangodeyi also said that there was ”no tension, dispute or any trouble whatsoever in Imedu over the creation of Obaship stool. Imedu is an ancient town which deserves the stool, and we are all happy that the Lagos State Government is making it happen.

”I have been the Baale of Imedu for over forty years and by right, I should be the Oba, but my health is failing and I have ceded that right to an illustrious and worthy son of Imedu, Prince Ibrahim Adebowale Saliu whom the entire indigenes of Imedu unanimously selected as our Oba-elect without any opposition, following his nomination by my humble self. He was presented to the Ibeju-Lekki Chieftaincy Committee which duly approved his selection after doing its due diligence for three months.”

Majeobaje warns against insecurity in Southwest, seeks urgent reforms

A non-governmental organization, Majeóbajé Community Development Initiative, has cautioned against growing infiltration of terrorists and armed bandits into the South-West and other southern regions of Nigeria.

The group expressed concerns over what it described as deteriorating security landscape across the southwest region.

A communiqué after its general meeting on Sunday,  jointly signed by its Chairman, Chief Akintayo Akin-Deko, and Secretary, Ayo Oyerinde lamented that insecurity in some part of the country is gradually pushing displaced terrorists and bandits into forests and communities in South-West as well as Kogi, Kwara, Delta, and Edo States.

“We are seeing a steady flow of terrorists dislodged from some part of northern Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Mali. They either hide in forests or operate openly among economic migrants who engage in informal work, ” it stated.

While acknowledging that earlier migration trends from the North included refugees and economic seekers, Majeóbajé said the dynamics have now shifted dangerously, with hardened criminal elements embedding themselves in local communities.

The group sympathised with families affected by violent attacks and cited high-profile incidents such as the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, the 2022 Owo church massacre, and recent lynchings in Edo and Plateau states as symptoms of the nation’s deepening crisis.

Majeóbajé commended South-West governors for establishing regional security outfits such as Amotekun and Forest Guards but stressed the need to professionalise and properly equip these agencies. It warned against politicising such initiatives.

“There must be greater collaboration among the South-West states, as well as joint security mechanisms with bordering states.”

While condemning mob lynchings as “NEVER an option,” Majeóbajé advocated for the inclusion of local hunters and vigilantes in Nigeria’s security strategy. It echoed calls by national figures such as Gen. T.Y. Danjuma (rtd) and DSS Director-General Dr. Tosin Ajayi to decentralise security efforts.

A major point of contention raised by the group was the federal ban on the issuance and renewal of firearm licences, which it said has disempowered local hunters who often face better-armed adversaries.

“The ban robs hunters of their dignity and endangers their lives when confronting AK-47-wielding terrorists,” urging the Inspector-General of Police to lift the ban and implement stronger firearm monitoring systems instead.

While saluting the bravery of the Nigerian military, Majeóbajé called for increased deployment of troops to the South-West to prevent the region from becoming a new frontline in the country’s security crisis.

In its resolutions, the group announced plans to engage with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to push for lifting the ban on firearm licences for qualified citizens, training communities on lawful responses to insecurity, strengthening grassroots security networks, enhancing coordination among affected states.

Founded in 2014, Majeóbajé Community Development Initiative is a network of professionals, scholars, and entrepreneurs committed to restoring the former Western Region of Nigeria to a path of self-reliant economic and social development.

  • Gov Aiyedatiwa’s renewed pledge to women’s empowerment and Ma’ami Ajulo @ 90 colloquium

Gov Aiyedatiwa’s renewed pledge to women’s empowerment and Ma’ami Ajulo @ 90 colloquium

    Dr. Febisola Adelegan

By all accounts, the past few weeks in Ondo State have been a vibrant celebration of womanhood, resilience, and leadership. From International Women’s Day to the more localized but equally powerful celebration of Women’s Day just last week, the state has found itself in what many now call a season of women. And while some may dismiss the flurry of activities as mere coincidences tied to the global calendar, a deeper look reveals something far more intentional, a quiet but resolute transformation being championed by the administration of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

At first glance, the colourful events, symposiums, empowerment programs, and community-based celebrations may appear seasonal. Skeptics might argue that these initiatives are simply government reactions to the calendar events of March and early April. After all, International Women’s Day (March 8) and Nigeria’s own Women’s Day (last week of March or first week of April) were widely celebrated across the country. But here in Ondo State, something different is unfolding.

Since assuming office, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s policies have consistently signaled an administration that understands the critical role of women in governance, social cohesion, and economic development. From appointing more women to strategic positions to actively supporting programmes in health, education, and entrepreneurship targeted at women, this government appears to be walking its talk. To implement his laudable vision, the Governor found a capable and committed lieutenant in the energetic and dutiful Dr. Seun Osamaye, whom he appointed as Special Adviser to oversee women’s affairs.

The Ondo State Micro-Credit Agency’s support for female-led businesses has surged, maternal health initiatives are receiving greater budgetary attention, and gender-based violence is being tackled with legislative teeth, evidenced by the increased cooperation between ministries, civil society, and the Office of the Attorney General.

In fact, it is the Office of the Attorney General that is at the center of what may become one of the most defining symbolic events in this “season” of women.

Flyers have begun to circulate about an upcoming colloquium to be hosted in honour of Chief Mrs. Christianah Monisola Ajulo (née Adedeji), the Iya-Ijo of Christ Anglican Church, Ifira-Akoko, who recently turned 90. But this isn’t just another birthday event. Spearheaded by her son, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, the event promises to be more than a celebration, it is being positioned as a platform to reflect on the role of mothers and matriarchs in shaping society, nurturing leaders, and inspiring legacies of purpose.

The colloquium, according to insiders, is set to attract the Mother of the Nation, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu; thought leaders; notable personalities from within and outside the country; women advocates; policymakers; leading politicians; lawyers; captains of industry; and revered clergymen and clergywomen. It will focus on the influence of motherhood, not only as a biological or cultural role, but as a cornerstone for value transmission, ethical leadership, and civic responsibility. It’s a theme that aligns seamlessly with the administration’s broader narrative: that development must be inclusive, and no one is more central to inclusive development than women.

In Chief Mrs. Ajulo’s story, of early hardship, entrepreneurial triumph, and unshakable Christian devotion, one finds the essence of the Ondo woman: strong, faithful, visionary, and generational in her impact. It is not surprising, then, that her son, a top figure in the Aiyedatiwa cabinet, seeks to use her milestone as a mirror for society’s appreciation of motherhood itself.

What the Ondo State government appears to be doing is turning moments into movements. By capitalizing on seasonal celebrations and turning them into platforms for reflection, policy alignment, and public engagement, Governor Aiyedatiwa is positioning his administration as one that doesn’t just recognise women, but truly empowers them.

The colloquium in honour of Mama Ajulo is emblematic of this shift. It is a deeply personal act being elevated into a public conversation. In doing so, the state affirms a vital truth: that the development of women is not a gift to be given, but a necessity to be upheld.

As the clock ticks, and as April 17th begins to murmur in the distance, it will become increasingly clear that the Ondo example under Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, however quiet or subtle it may seem, is one worth studying. Whether through increased representation, economic inclusion, or symbolic acts like the upcoming colloquium, Ondo State is gradually writing a new narrative about what it means to govern with women in mind.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s government may not yet be shouting about it, but if the recent wave of events is any indicator, the administration is speaking loudly where it matters most, in action.

  • MURIC blasts Afenifere over mosque demolition, accuses group of bias against Yoruba Muslims

MURIC blasts Afenifere over mosque demolition, accuses group of bias against Yoruba Muslims

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, of harboring deep-seated bias against Yoruba Muslims.

MURIC made the disclosure in a statement issued on Friday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, in response to a press release by the Ekiti State Chairman of Afenifere, Mr. Gabriel Alonge.

Alonge had earlier defended the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, over the demolition of the Sabo Central Mosque in Aramoko, Ekiti State, describing MURIC’s criticism of the act as incitement.

He also called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to place MURIC under watch.

However, Professor Akintola, in a sharp rebuttal, accused Afenifere of spreading falsehood and marginalizing Yoruba Muslims.

He insisted that Yoruba Muslims are not second-class citizens, stressing that they are integral members of the Yoruba community who deserve equal protection.

According to him, Afenifere has failed in its duty by siding with those oppressing Yoruba Muslims instead of defending their rights.

Akintola maintained that Senator Bamidele is the sponsor of the constituency project that led to the mosque’s demolition, arguing that it was impossible for the lawmaker not to have known that the structure existed on the land.

    The statement reads:

“Following our statement of Monday, 7th April, 2025 captioned ‘MURIC Condemns Demolition of 2 Mosques in Ekiti’ in which we alleged that the Senate leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, knew about the demolition of Sabo Central Mosque, Aramoko, Ekiti State, the chairman of Afenifere, Ekiti State chapter, Mr. Gabriel Alonge, released a press statement yesterday, 8th April, 2025  in which he defended the Senate leader.

“The Afenifere chieftain claimed that MURIC’s allegation was an incitement. It therefore charged the Department of State Security (DSS) to monitor our activities. First and foremost, we stand by our statement and we take Afenifere’s remarks with a pinch of salt. The Senate Leader owns the constituency project for which the mosque was pulled down. It was therefore not possible for him not to know that his project would affect the mosque which was existing on the land.

“Were there no drawings for the construction? Was the owner of the constituency project not briefed by the architect? What about the project engineer? Did he not brief his client? Was there no personal visit by the Senate Leader or his aides to the site of the project? Was it an empty land? Or do we want to infer, a priori, negligence or incompetence in the execution of the project?

“Afenifere should stop defending the indefensible and allow Opeyemi Bamidele to do the needful, namely, to engage the local Muslim community in dialogue. Is that too much to ask for? Is that incitement? Afenifere is hiding behind one finger. Afenifere has taken sides by defending the demolition of the mosque. Neutrality would have been the best stand of the organization when the issue involves a religious group since Afenifere wants Nigerians to believe that it is not out to push a Christian agenda. Fact-finding, neutrality and objectivity would have promoted dialogue and subsequent mutual understanding.

“Afenifere has exposed itself as a group with vested interest by defending Opeyemi Bamidele. It is an exhibition of anti-Muslim sentiment. Afenifere appears to be happy that mosques are being demolished methodically and systematically in Ekiti State. Of course this demolition of mosques in the state has a long history. It is not a new phenomenon. It started during the first tenure of Ayodele Fayose’s administration in Ekiti, precisely in 2005 and MURIC cried out at the time. He first demolished the Old Prison Staff mosque.

“The mosque at the State Housing Estate, built by the Egbira community was the next. OkeSha mosque in Ado Ekiti was demolished in 2006 ostensibly to pave way for road dualization. In 2012, the Fayemi-led administration demolished Igbein Mosque, allegedly to avoid a clash with an idol worshippers’ shrine in the area.

“The Fayemi administration also demolished a big Hausa mosque at Atikankan to make way for another Otu shrine, relocating the Hausa community to New Shasha at the outskirts of Ado Ekiti. In the recent demolitions under discussion, two other mosques were demolished: one at Sabo, Aramoko because of a constituency project initiated by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele; the other in the same Igbein area of Ado Ekiti about six months ago. How can Islam survive in a Muslim community that loses two big mosques in six months? How can the Muslims worship freely and safely where every new regime joins the Mosque Destroyers’ Club (MDC)? The conspirators know what they are doing. There seems to be a plot among traditional and political leaders in Ekiti State in particular to eliminate Islam through multiple demolition of mosques.

“Afenifere knew about the persecution of Yoruba Muslim children in public and private schools in the region, the denial of the use of Shari’ah for Yoruba Muslims, the political marginalization, economic strangulation and social ostracisation of Muslims in the region by their Yoruba kinsmen. Has Afenifere ever defended the rights of Muslims in the land? Some Yoruba youths threatened to unleash violence on Yoruba Muslim leaders a few weeks ago over the Shari’ah panel imbroglio. It was in viral video clips but nobody heard the voice of Afenifere. An intermediary role in the saga would have proved that Afenifere is for all Yorubas regardless of religious leaning. But Afenifere looked the other way because what those youths threatened to do to Muslim leaders keyed into Afenifere’s scheme.

“Afenifere is a biased organization that operates like a cultural wing of the Christian Organisation of Nigeria (CAN) in the South West masquerading as a socio-cultural organization. Afenifere has asked the DSS to monitor the activities of MURIC. But what we know is that Afenifere cannot give DSS orders. The DSS knows its onions. Afenifere should stop being naïve. There is no notable organization that DSS does not monitor as a matter of routine, including Afenifere. So how can a group that is being monitored issue orders to those monitoring it to monitor a perceived rival group.

“Afenifere claimed that we incited Nigerians in our statement. That is a big lie from the pit of Jahannam. Nobody should take Afenifere serious after this. Our statement ended with a plea for calm among Muslims. This was in the last paragraph where we said, ‘Meanwhile we appeal to Muslims in the state to remain calm and unperturbed. Islam is a religion of peace and we expect every Muslim to be a good ambassador of his or her religion’. It can still be checked. Internet does not tell lies like Afenifere. Nigerians can see very clearly that Afenifere is looking for ways of implicating MURIC or at least, to smear our good image. But they have failed woefully. We remain undaunted. Afenifere also tried to hoodwink Nigerians by saying that the Muslims of Aramoko were happy with the demolition of their mosque because the Chief Imam was present at the commissioning of the market.

“We respectfully disagree. The Chief Imam was ‘officially present’ at the commissioning as demanded by protocol. Muslims in Aramoko complained to MURIC about the demolition of their mosque. They also issued press statements on their own. The first paragraph of one of the statements published in a newspaper on 29th March, 2025 (i.e. even before MURIC reacted at all) reads, ‘The Muslim community in Aramoko Ekiti, Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has raised concerns over what it described as systemic marginalization following the demolition of two of its mosques within a six-month period”.
