Chairperson, Zone 7A, Josephine Ngeleh, who stated that a total of 15 clubs were participating in the walk, which took them through Ikeja metropolis and beyond, said growing the numbers would enable the club garner more resources and be able to do more for the less privileged in its various humanitarian focus areas of diabetes, vision, hunger, childhood cancer and the environment.

  • We didn’t encroach on host communities’ land, says OGFTZ

We didn’t encroach on host communities’ land, says OGFTZ

Ogun Quangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) has denied the allegation by some residents that it appropriated some of their land beside the ones originally allocated to it by the state government.

Senior Special Adviser to OGFTZ’s Chairman, Alhaji Kabir Ajayi, stated this yesterday at a press conference in Igbesa.

He was reacting to the protest last weekend by a group of aggrieved residents at Igbesa and Ejila-Awori in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area, who claimed that the zone management went beyond the 250 hectares  of land legally given to them by the government, thereby not only seizing their land but also destroying their means of livelihood.

They had lamented that either the government was hiding some truth from them or somebody was settled and refused to get across to them.

They, therefore, urged the government to either return the the 157.55 hectares it just took or pay for them.

However, Ajayi said the protesters were telling lies and that they had no case as due process was followed in the acquisition, which was done by the government long before the zone touch down. “OGFTZ did not enter any land not allocated to it,’’ he said.

He affirmed that 8,000 hectares of land were acquired by the government in the area, out of which 2,000.407 hectares were given to OGFTZ, which represents the government’s equity/investment contribution to the zone, and not the figure (600 hectares) being bandied by the protesters. The land in question actually belonged to the government and not an encroachment, he insisted.

Ajayi also insisted that the zone has a certificate of occupancy signed by the then governor and a gazette released by the military administration much earlier – two things demanded by the protestors to back their statement. “We have the documents – C of O from the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation (OPIC) and a certificate true copy of the survey of the land in question,’’ he added.

He also showed reporters a report of the House of Assembly on the land after an investigation as demanded by the aggrieved residents.

He challenged reporters to ask the protesters to show them a copy of the C of O on the area.

Ajayi, who hails from the area, also affirmed that 2,000 people from the 13 families in the area affected by the acquisition were paid and that those who were not refused to be enumerated. ‘’Most of these families have accepted due compensation and vacated the land, out of respect for the government allocation,’’ he said.

General Olori Ebi of Iludofin, Mr. Ajidagba Jamiu, confirmed that though they were paid, but that the amount was small.

Ajayi, who described the aggrieved landowners as doing the wrong things, said since they had gone to court, they should allow the judiciary to adjudicate on the matter and leave out the Chinese and other local investors who have provided amenities in the area and employed many indigenes.

At the event were some family members in the two communities.

The Senior Adviser, Media to OGFTZ Chairman, Timilehin Ajagunna, also urged the media to verify their statements at the Bureau of Lands and other relevant government agencies.

OGFTZ, which has over 40 companies doing business in it, is managed by China-African Investment Free Zone Company.

Ogun residents lament flooding as man drowns in canal

Tension had gripped residents of Ajegunle Ilo and Ilo-Otta Awela communities in Sango-Ota, Ogun State, after a man drowned in the canal.

Days after the incident, his body remains in the canal, face-down in murky water, prompting fresh cries for government intervention over the deteriorating canal and bridge infrastructure that has claimed many lives over the years.

The incident, according to residents and business owners, is not an isolated one. Multiple deaths have occurred at this same location, with school children, traders, and even vehicles plunging into the canal, especially during the rainy season.

Baale of Ajegunle Ilo community, Prince Abolaji Adeyemo, expressed deep frustration during an interview with our correspondent.

“The canal separates Lagos State from Ogun State at the Toll gate. For 16 years, we’ve begged both Federal and state governments to fix it. It keeps expanding due to flooding. Houses, markets, and businesses are being washed away. People’s lives are at risk daily, especially children and passersby,” he said.

He described the recent drowning as one of many, noting that it only takes a downpour for disaster to strike.

“Whenever it rains, the water rises fast, and anyone caught around the canal can be swept away. We’ve lost pupils, meat sellers, and several others. The delay in removing bodies only increases the health risks, including cholera outbreaks,” Adeyemo warned.

One hotel near the canal has spent over ₦30 million to construct concrete slabs in a desperate attempt to shield the property from being swallowed by the widening canal. The hotel Manager, Mr. Richard Odakon, said their efforts were simply not enough.

“My boss values lives. He spent over ₦26 million to protect the hotel with temporary slabs. But the flood is so strong that it’s already washing them off. If nothing is done, this place will collapse,” he lamented.

Odakon added that the area has seen frequent accidents involving trucks and vehicles plunging into the canal during floods.

“This happens every week. It’s become normal to hear that someone else has drowned or another vehicle is in the canal. It’s heartbreaking,” he said.

Residents say they’ve written letters, organized protests, and held meetings with local government officials and lawmakers. Yet, no lasting solution has come.

Chairman of the Peace Land Community Development Association, Mr. Rufus Ejimakinde said the community has spent its own money trying to provide temporary solutions.

“We built slabs ourselves, but when the government came to dredge the canal, they removed them and left without completing the work. The tractors only worked for 19 days and never returned. We’ve reached out to Senator Yayi to escalate the issue, but we’ve heard nothing back,” he said.

He added that even light rains cause deadly flooding, raising concerns about what will happen during the peak of the rainy season.

At the nearby meat market, the mood was one of frustration and helplessness. Ahmed Ololade, a butcher who has worked in the area for over 16 years, recounted how the market has shrunk significantly due to the encroaching flood.

“This place used to be full of traders. Now, the canal has taken over. Our colleague drowned two years ago, and we found his body after three days. We’ve spent almost ₦4 million on barricades, but it’s not working. People are scared to come and buy meat,” he said.

Chairperson of the Ajegunle Ilo Community Development Association,

Mrs. Dosunmu said despite several appeals to the Agbado-Okeodo Local Government and other relevant government agencies, nothing meaningful has been done.

“We even held a stakeholders meeting and were told to reapply for repairs because previous efforts weren’t done properly. But time is running out. Schools will soon resume, and children will be forced to cross that deadly canal daily,” she said with concern.

She also recounted how a community member’s wife was swept away by the canal while trying to get home.

“How many deaths will it take for the government to act?” she asked.

A resident who abandoned his house due to fear of the flood, Mr. Ayo Samuelsaid the government’s silence has been devastating.

“There is a government, but it feels like we’re on our own. It’s the people and private individuals trying to fix the canal, not the authorities. This is shameful,” he said.

Samuel expressed worry for children who must cross from Ogun State into Lagos for school, noting that many stay back or get stranded whenever it rains.

As the body of the most recent drowning victim remains in the canal, community members are calling on the Federal Government, as well as the Ogun and Lagos State Governments, to urgently intervene and reconstruct the damaged canal and bridge at the Sango-Ota toll gate.

Residents warn that if nothing is done, more lives will be lost.

“We are begging the government, for the umpteenth time, please come to our rescue,” said Baale Adeyemi.

  • APC chieftain extols President, Tunji Bello

APC chieftain extols President, Tunji Bello

About 1,000 residents of Mainland/Yaba local government areas of Lagos State smiled home recently with food items and cash donated by a Mainland-based politician, Alhaji Ibrahim Alao Megida.

The event, which took place with special prayers at Orepeju Social Club, Cemetery Street, Ebute-Metta, was organised in celebration of the 73rd birthday anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Prayers were rendered for the President and Tunji Bello, patron of MIG, for his philanthropic contribution in uplifting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Mainland/Yaba and his regular empowerment drives, which have gone a long way in alleviating the plight of the needy.

Megida’s philanthropic gesture generated quite a considerable stir of excitement, as the hall erupted with applause and a resonating chant of “Megida for Chairman Yaba LCDA’’ by beneficiaries and attendees, who swore to stand solidly behind the Yaba LCDA APC chieftain, in a bid to ensure he becomes the next chairman of Yaba LCDA.

“For many decades, Megida had stood in without wavering, in support of progressive cause. He had been a kingmaker, he had played crucial role in enthroning governors, senators, members of the House of Assembly and House of Representatives. In fact, if you take a roll call of local government chairmen in the Old Mainland Local Government and later Yaba LCDA, you will surely see the bold role and influence of Megida, visibly written as an indisputable kingmaker, whose support had been largely instrumental to their success in attaining the post,’’ says Oyedeji Tunji Oshelu, a frontline entertainment entrepreneur.

He described Alhaji Megida as a seasoned politician, grassroots mobiliser and tactician whose mastery of grassroots leadership is not only prodigious, but also unsurpassable.

‘’He needs our support this time around, to become the next chairman, Yaba LCDA,’’ said the notable entertainment entrepreneur, who is also an influential community leader.

Frontline educationist, Alhaja Folashade Morenikeji, described Megida as God’s gift to Mainlanders and Yaba LCDA in particular.

‘’It is unbelievable that one could serve a community selflessly as Megida had done, without looking back both in his personal capacity and through the aegis of MIG, which he had used in turning the lives of many people around, from different walks of life, while also contributing immensely to the political success of quite a lot of our prominent politicians in the Lagos State, and yet neglect his own personal interest. In fact, this is why we will all need to rally together to ensure Megida becomes the new chairman, Yaba LCDA Insha Allah”

According to her, ‘’Megida has been loyal in his undiluted service to the high and the low, the rich and poor, the widows, orphans, artisans, market men and women. He has always supported the progressive tendencies and has never wavered, but has rather remained loyal at all times. This indeed should be a time to repay Megida, we must all ensure at all cost that we join hands together to vote him in with landslide victory as the next chairman, Yaba LCDA.

Kehinde Rufai, Ward A Oto, Olanrewaju Kabir and Basirat Abdulkareem, who spoke on behalf of the teeming mass of beneficiaries, also each took time to extol the virtue of the veteran grassroots mobiliser whom they described as a bridge-builder, and a connecting link between the rich and, Christians and Muslims, and the young and old.

“We may not have known or ever met Sanwo-Olu or any of the political bigwigs, but for sure, we know Megida. He is the connecting link between the voiceless lots like us one hand, and the government on the other hand. It is through him that we feel the pulse of the government. We consult him daily for employment, for financial assistance, among several other things. And he will never hesitate in using his connection in making due representation on our behalf.

“Some other people in his shoes would have used their connections with people like Tunji Bello to maximise their own personal interest, but not so with Alhaji Megida, who as the co-ordinator of MIG has always brought his influence to bear in mid-wifing regular empowerment drive through the beneficial philanthropy of our leader and patron, Hon Tunji Bello. It is therefore high time we accorded him a maximum support.’’

Also,  eminent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ismael Idris, and Alhaja Odusote, wife of Chief Imam, Mainland Local Government Council, prayed for Tunji Bello, whose philanthropy had impacted considerably on people from various walks of lives in Mainland.

They also lent their voices in support of Megida, saying “a man who has done so much in support of APC and President Tinubu, and has equally done so much for the people from diverse walks of life, if we support him to realise his political ambition as the next chairman, Yaba LCDA, he will surely achieve more.”

Megida described Tinubu as one of the greatest leaders to have emerged from the African continent, urging Nigerians to appreciate and support him more than ever before, for his unparalleled devotion in the onerous drive to elevate Nigeria to greatness.

Noting that Tinubu is a God-chosen leader, Megida said Tinubu would not only secure a second term, but also complete it and lead the nation to greatness.

Megida, who is also a Special Assistant on Politics to the FCCPC boss, Mr. Tunji Bello, seized the opportunity of the occasion to thank the latter, who is also patron of the MIG, for the immense role he had been playing in Mainland Local government politics.

  • Oyo govt begins phase II of 50% tractor subsidy for farmers

Oyo govt begins phase II of 50% tractor subsidy for farmers

As part of its efforts to support smallholder farmers in the state in the 2025 farming season, Oyo State Government has announced the beginning of the second phase of the 50 per cent land ploughing subsidy, also known as tractorisation policy.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, made this known yesterday during a news conference held at the ministry.

He said as a result of the massive support the Governor ‘Seyi Makinde administration had been giving to farmers, the National Bureau of Statistics declared that Oyo State recorded one of the lowest food inflation rates in the country.

    Read Also: Omololu Olunloyo (1935 – 2025)

He added that the state could also boast of having become one of the food baskets of the country, as more than 9,569 tonnes of cassava, representing about 300 trailers, were moved out of only Ibarapa zone of Oyo State into neighbouring states between December 2024 and March 2025.

The Chairman of the Agricultural Credit Corporation of Oyo State (ACCOS), Sheik Taofeek Akeugbagold, declared that apart from the 50 per cent tractorisation policy, which would help farmers, they could also access agriculture credit and loans from the corporation.

He lauded Governor Makinde for taking interests in the development of agriculture and the well-being of the teeming farming population in the state.

Similarly, Olaleye, hailed Governor Makinde for approving the continuation of the 50 per cent tractorisation policy, which began in 2024, noting that the policy represented the governor’s commitment to progressive and sustainable agricultural development.

He said the state government was able to reach about 1,487 farmers directly through the programme in 2024, with about 6,090.91 acres of farmlands mechanically ploughed across the state.

The commissioner added that as a result of the policy, the state witnessed significant increases in productivity per hectare due to proper land preparation, as many small and medium-scale farmers transitioned from manual to mechanical farming methods.

According to the commissioner, the policy entails the state government paying for 50 per cent of the cost of ploughing, with the farmers only paying half the cost of the entire land they want to cultivate.

He said the ministry had designated at least four extension officers to each of the 33 local government areas of the state, calling on farmers to approach ‘’these officers, who will visit their proposed farm sites, take the measurements and send necessary information to the ministry.’’

He said: “It is my pleasure to address you today on the continuation of our landmark 50 per cent tractorisation subsidy programme as we prepare for the 2025 planting season.

“Last year, Oyo State under the visionary leadership of Governor Makinde took a bold step to revolutionise farming by introducing the 50 per cent tractorisation subsidy programme.

“I am proud to report the tangible results of this initiative: A remarkable 6,090.91 acres of farmlands were mechanically ploughed across the state; 1,487 farmers directly benefited from this programme, transforming their agricultural practices.

“These achievements reflect the successful implementation of His Excellency’s vision of agricultural transformation as a pathway to economic development.

“As we commence the second phase of this programme, I am pleased to announce several important developments. On April 9, the state’s Agricultural Extension Workers completed specialised training conducted by “Hello Tractor,” our technical partner in this initiative.

“This training will equip all the extension officers with the latest knowledge and skills to better support our farmers.

“During the training, participants were introduced to the new online booking application that will streamline tractor services. This user-friendly platform will allow farmers to book tractor services conveniently, track the status of their requests and receive timely updates on service delivery.

“Additionally, a dedicated helpline has been established to provide immediate assistance to farmers facing any challenges with the booking process or service delivery.

“Under the tractorisation programme, Oyo State Government will continue to subsidise 50 per cent of the cost of mechanical ploughing services for every acre of farmland cultivated by our farmers. This means that for every acre mechanically ploughed, farmers will only pay half the cost, with the government covering the remaining 50 per cent.

“I wish to inform all farmers in Oyo State that registration for the 2025 tractorisation subsidy programme is now open. Farmers can register through agricultural extension officers in all local government areas, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development headquarters and the new online booking application already demonstrated.

“For those who want to participate in the tractorisation subsidy, the form is free. And if you don’t get the form, just approach the extension officers in your local government. Take them to your farm so that they can take the measurement. Once they upload it, we have our own gadgets here which we can use to see your farm immediately.

“While we deploy tractors, all the ones we are deploying are being tracked so that when they are working on your farmland. We will be able to monitor them from our office here. So, nobody can cheat the system.

“This initiative exemplifies Governor Makinde’s commitment to agricultural transformation. By reducing the cost of land preparation through mechanisation while providing climate information, we are addressing significant barriers to increased agricultural productivity.’’

VeryDarkman urged to be fair with Abike-Dabiri as NiDCOM boss recognized for major efforts against human trafficking

Following recent allegations of negligence in handling human trafficking cases, particularly from controversial social media activist VeryDarkMan, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has received support from anti-human trafficking advocate and Cameroon-based publisher Ismaila Adegbola.

Adegbola, who leads the group Advocates Against Human Trafficking & Child Exploitation, urged critics—especially VeryDarkMan—to be fair in their assessment of Dabiri-Erewa’s efforts.

He highlighted her consistent commitment to addressing human trafficking and protecting Nigerians abroad, noting that her track record speaks for itself.

The controversy began when VeryDarkMan issued a one-week ultimatum to Dabiri-Erewa, demanding urgent action to rescue children allegedly trafficked to the Ivory Coast.

In response, Dabiri-Erewa dismissed the accusations as “misinformed and ignorant,” defending NIDCOM’s role and stating that such complex issues require coordination with multiple agencies.

The exchange has sparked a heated debate online, with Nigerians divided over where the responsibility lies for ensuring the safety and repatriation of citizens stranded overseas.

Adegbola emphasised that while it is important to hold public officials accountable, it is equally vital to recognize those who have consistently shown dedication to tackling human trafficking and protecting the rights of Nigerians in the diaspora.

He said, “Let’s focus on solutions, not blame; it is the responsibility of everybody to come out in unity in the fight against human trafficking,” said Adegbola.

“It is truly disheartening to witness the recent confrontation between social media activist Verydarkman and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), especially on an issue as sensitive and heartbreaking as human and child trafficking in Côte d’Ivoire.”

“Last year, I embarked on an investigative mission to Côte d’Ivoire to document the harsh realities faced by many of our children and young girls trapped in modern slavery. What I encountered was devastating, and I believe this issue demands more than outrage — it requires strategic action, unity, and compassion.

“While Verydarkman may be passionate about justice, I must strongly caution against the tone and words used towards Hon. Abike Dabiri. From my experience, she has shown consistent concern for the welfare of Nigerians abroad. I vividly remember her swift and emotional response when I notified her office about the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire. She was deeply saddened and encouraged me to engage NAPTIP for further intervention. Though my repeated visits to NAPTIP were fruitless — a matter that must be addressed within that agency — it would be unfair to place the blame solely on her.

“I must also commend the Nigerian community and the Nigerian embassy in Côte d’Ivoire for their resilience and efforts so far in tackling this issue. They have shown leadership, compassion, and commitment in the face of a difficult situation.

“Let us remember: this is not a fight for one person or agency alone. This is our collective responsibility. It is time to channel our energies into meaningful partnerships. We must raise awareness, empower vulnerable communities, and demand reform at all institutional levels.”

  • Ogun youths urged to build better world through cooperatives

Ogun youths urged to build better world through cooperatives

Youths in Ogun State have been called upon to embrace the cooperative model as a sustainable solution to unemployment, poverty, and economic inequality.

The charge was made at the 2025 Ogun State Youth Cooperative Seminar held on Wednesday, April 9, at the Oba K. O. Olubiyi Conference Hall, Tayo Sobanjo Building, Asero, Abeokuta.

The event, organized by the OGSCOFED Youth Cooperative Multipurpose Society Ltd., drew participants from across the state and focused on the theme: “A Better World Through Cooperatives: Eternal Relevance and Youth Empowerment.”

Delivering the keynote presentation, Mr. Ola Otinwa, MSc, FICP, President of Ike-Oluwa Sagamu Remo CMU Ltd., emphasized that “cooperatives are not relics of the past, but revolutionary tools for building sustainable futures.”

According to him, youth cooperatives are springing up across Africa, solving local problems and providing new pathways for wealth creation and leadership.

“From Kenya to Rwanda and from Kaduna to Akure, young people are using cooperatives to create jobs, improve food systems, and bridge the digital divide,” Otinwa noted.

Emphasizing the relevance of youth cooperatives globally, Otinwa cited success stories, including Kenya’s Youth Bunge, South Africa’s Siyavuna Cooperative, and Nigeria’s own Youth in Agribusiness Cooperative in Kaduna and Young Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Ibadan.

“These cooperatives have not only empowered thousands of youths but also created lasting impacts in local economies,” he said.

The President of OGSCOFED Ltd., Alhaji Abdulwasiu Olaleye, who served as the Chief Host, charged Nigerian youths to embrace cooperative societies as viable tools for social and economic transformation, especially tackling unemployment and poverty.

Olaleye reiterated the organization’s commitment to deepening youth involvement in the cooperative movement.

“Cooperatives remain one of the most inclusive and democratic models of enterprise. The youth must take ownership and shape it for their future,” he asserted.

In his welcome address at the 2025 Ogun State Youth Cooperative Seminar, the President of OGSCOFED Youth Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Badejo Adeyemi, charged youths across the state to embrace the cooperative movement as a driving force for leadership, innovation, and sustainable development.

“Today is more than a gathering; it is a movement of ideas, innovation, leadership, and transformation anchored in the spirit of cooperatives”.

“We are here because we believe that youths are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the change-makers of today”, Badejo said.

Participants were also exposed to key highlights of the cooperative movement, including access to finance, cooperative values, leadership development, sustainable development, and continuous relevance.
