Alimosho APC group hails Yusuf as Mandate leader

A political pressure group under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Alimosho area of Lagos State, Alimosho Voice, has congratulated a member of Lagos State House of Assembly, Bisi Yusuf, on his emergence as leader of the Mandate Movement in the area, following the resolution of an 18-month long internal crisis.

The development marks the end of a prolonged leadership tussle within the influential political bloc. The rift had led to the formation of a parallel structure, a move that fractured party cohesion in the area until it was recently resolved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The group’s spokesman, Alabi Ade, said the crisis had caused damage to the political and developmental fortunes of the local government.

He said the leadership tussle had not only undermined political unity, but had also adversely affected the well-being of Alimosho residents.

“The crisis over who is the authentic Mandate leader in Alimosho has been laid to rest. The blame for political misery, financial misappropriation in governance and lack of adequate infrastructure in Alimosho lies at the doorstep of the Mandate Movement.

“While the going was good within the Mandate Movement, residents of Alimosho suffered and are still suffering from their ineptitude. It is glaring that when the pot of soup started cracking and the soup began to leak, they parted ways,” he said.

The body urged the lawmaker to lead with inclusivity and engage the opposing faction to foster unity within the APC in Alimosho.

“We once again congratulate Bisi Yusuf on his emergence as the new leader of the Mandate Movement in Alimosho. He should be magnanimous enough to carry Enilolobo’s faction along. Their crisis cost us the presidential election in 2023, which we lost to the Labour Party,” the spokesman said.

Firm lays claim to 60 per cent IBEDC equity share

    • Dismisses ‘baseless’ claims by another bidder

Archlight Nigeria Limited has described as ‘misleading and unfounded’, claims by 86 Gardens Limited in a court filing seeking to interfere with the legitimate ownership and transfer of shares in the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

In a statement released by the company’s management, it said it emerged as the preferred bidder for the 60 per cent equity in IBEDC offered by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) during a competitive bid in 2024.

The company said following its announcement as the preferred bidder, 86 Gardens congratulated the company and made an unsolicited approach to become a co-investor in Archlight, and not in IBEDC.

It noted that some of Archlight shareholders negotiated a deal with 86G Limited, but the agreement-in-principle reached was kept in escrow, pending the fulfilment of terms and conditions, especially the payment of agreed fees for share transfer by 86G Ltd.

It said despite multiple deadline extensions, 86 Gardens never made the required financial commitment, adding that the co-investment proposal lapsed, and Archlight’s shareholders that negotiated with 86G lawfully disposed of their shares to other interested parties in August 2024 and exited the company.

The statement read in part: “86G later insisted the custodian of the unfulfilled agreement-in-principle must list it as a shareholder of Archlight despite not making any financial commitment. This prompted the custodian to convene a meeting of all the parties to explore the possibility of settling the matter. Archlight noted at the meeting that though 86G had no legal claim due to its failure to make the agreed financial payment, it would still entertain a co-investment deal acceptable to all the shareholders. 86G accepted the agreement reached at the meeting and promised to formally revert within one week.

“Instead of reverting on the agreement as promised, Archlight was shocked to learn that 86G had filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Abuja challenging the legality of the announcement of Archlight as the preferred bidder, instead of its SPV, Africa Plus Partners Nigeria Limited. This suit was contested by Archlight and subsequently dismissed on October 21, 2024. This effectively foreclosed any business relationship between 86G and Archlight on its share acquisition.”

The company noted that contrary to its assertions, 86 Gardens has no legal or beneficial interest in Archlight or its IBEDC equity, stressing that the recent court injunction it obtained ex parte  is an abuse of judicial process and a clear attempt to frustrate a lawfully executed business transaction.

The firm urged the public and stakeholders to disregard any false impressions being created by 86 Gardens and to rely on the rule of law and factual record, which supports the company’s position.

    • Another PDP lawmaker defects to APC

“The next general election, especially the 2027 presidential election, we are ready in Edo State. We have kick-started our own campaigns for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. We have to mobilise youths in our state, and you are part of the youth. I promise you that you will enjoy our party as you have chosen to join us.”

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo said this yesterday while kick-starting President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign in the state.

Another member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 24-member House of Assembly, Kaycee Osamwonyi, the representative of Uhunmwonde Constituency, who is a member of House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

With Osamwonyi’s defection, APC now has 14 members, while PDP is left with 10 members in the House of Assembly.

Okpebholo spoke at the Government House, Benin, when he received the defecting lawmaker (Osamwonyi), who was earlier received into the APC by the state Chairman of the party, Jarrett Tenebe, who later presented him to the governor.

Okpebholo hailed Osamwonyi and his colleagues, who decided to join APC. He assured them that his administration would create a conducive atmosphere for all of them to operate and collaborate to develop Edo.

The governor said his administration had embarked on developmental strides to transform all sectors of Edo economy, thereby making life better for residents.

He said: “We congratulate you (Osamwonyi) on your returning home. Your coming is a plus for the party (APC), as we have five of you who have joined. You have made our party stronger.

“A lot of people from other parties are ready to join our party, and soon there will be a carnival. I seek your help to drive development, and together, we will develop Edo State, and make life better for our people.

“Uhunmwonde Local Government is very special to me, and together we can develop the area and open it for growth and development.

Edo chairman of APC, presenting Osamwonyi to Okpebholo, said: ‘’APC is now in full control of the House of Assembly, in view of having the majority of the lawmakers.’’

Tenebe said: “Osamwonyi joined the party (APC), following the developmental strides your (Okpebholo’s) administration has achieved in the few months you have led Edo State.”

Osamwonyi said his decision to join APC was as a result of the disunity in the PDP from the national to unit level, as well as the achievements of Okpebholo in a very short time in office.

He said: “The division in my party, the PDP, made me to join the APC. For me, it is a homecoming, as I was once in the APC. Your (Okpebholo’s) developmental strides attracted me back home, as I want the best for my people.

“The many projects captured in the budget for Uhunmwonde people are impressive. I have no choice but to join the party (APC), for the development of my people.”

Edo Chairman of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, however, declared that Okpebholo was overwhelmed by insecurity across the state’s 18 local governments.

He hoped the party’s governorship candidate during the September 21, 2024 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, would emerge victorious at the Court of Appeal, having lost at the Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja, to ensure good governance.

    • Commits to monthly payment, declares war on quackery in estate management

Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to the implementation of monthly, quarterly or yearly rent.

It said it had been engaging stakeholders for the smooth take-off of the system for the benefit of accommodation seekers.

The government urged professionals and trade groups in the real estate sector to be sensitive to public outcry over incessant and worrisome rent increment, as well as unnecessary fees being charged, in defiance of the provision of the real estate law of Lagos State.

Commissioner for Housing Moruf Akinderu-Fatai and Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, gave the commitment during a  meeting with executives of Estate, Rent and Commission Agents Association of Nigeria (ERCAN).

The duo, expressing the concern of the state government about unwholesome practices among estate agents, with consequential upward swing in rent default, referred the practitioners to the  Lagos State Real Estate Transaction Law.

Akinderu-Fatai said: ‘’The existing law recognises your role and specifies percentage of chargeable fees of not more than 10 per cent on real estate transactions.”

He advised estate agents to come out strongly against quacks, who encouraged property owners to increase rent arbitrarily and create fees unknown to real estate transactions law of Lagos State.

He further enjoined ERCAN members to help spread the promotion of monthly, quarterly and yearly rent among their colleagues. The commissioner said Lagos State Government was ready to partner stakeholders to promote the rent payment system, to ‘’halt the indiscriminate practices, make rent affordable, guaranty the interest of property owners and continuity of regular payment of rent by tenants.’’

The President of ERCAN, Mr. Godwin Aleke, said members were committed to rent affordability and would assist the state government to promote monthly, quarterly and yearly rent system.

He pledged the association’s readiness to work in synergy with other professional bodies and stakeholders to sanitise real estate practice in Lagos State.

The meeting is part of the ongoing strategic stakeholders’ engagement on rent and indiscriminate fee as charged by agents in Lagos State. The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Abdulhafis Toriola and directors in the ministry.

  • Traders, business owners count losses as Oyo council demolishes shops in Ibadan

Traders, business owners count losses as Oyo council demolishes shops in Ibadan

Traders and business owners at Alegongo Market, Akobo, in Lagelu Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State, were yesterday sent out of business, as their shops and business outlets were pulled down.

The demolition, it was gathered, was on the orders of the council chairman, who had served a seven- day quit notice on the traders and shop owners. The ultimatum lapsed yesterday.

The demolition, it was gathered, was carried out under the supervision of armed security operatives.

During the exercise, which paralysed commercial activities, many shop owners tried to salvage the little they could from their belongings.

The Nation reports that the traders had on Tuesday, in protest, marched on the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi Secretariat, to solicit the help of Governor Seyi Makinde to help them appeal to the authority of Lagelu Local Government no to go ahead with the demolition.

The affected shop owners, who carried placards and banners, arrived at the secretariat in the afternoon. They were full of pleas, urging Governor Makinde to intervene and prevent their expulsion from the shops, which, according to them, might deprive them of their livelihood.

The traders, men and women, who were full of kind words and appreciation of the governor, said his intervention seemed the only grace that could save them and their businesses.

The traders, who said their efforts to seek audience with the council chairman had been futile since the eviction notice was pasted on their shops about six days ago, added that all issues having to do with the ownership of the about 700 shops had long been resolved with the community leaders, who created the space for traders in the community.

Inscriptions on some of the placards read: “Alegongo Market: Market traders are begging our dear governor to please have mercy on us”, “We the masses are begging you our father”, “We are begging, please come to our aid”, “Your Excellency, we are begging you, please don’t let them demolish our shops”, among others.

However, the local government authorities yesterday ignored the plea of the affected traders by demolishing shops and business outlets.

Investigations by our correspondent showed that the government had earlier given an ultimatum to the affected traders and business owners, which lapsed yesterday.

A resident in the area, who simply identified herself as Bimpe, said the exact reason for the demolition had not been made clear to the people.

“Honestly, we are worried about the fate of our businesses and livelihoods, as this sudden demolition has caught us off guard.”

One of the leaders of the traders, Mr Ajibola Keru, said although the government had the power to do whatever it deemed fit, traders, who had letters of allocation to use the space since about 20 years ago, expected that the local government would have called them to a meeting before just deciding on the demolition.

A government official, who did not want his name in print, said: “The demolition is for the benefits of the residents and business owners, as the local government authority is only trying to modernise the area.

“I am not authorised to speak to journalists. But one thing I know, it’s for the benefits of the masses. The local government wants to give it a facelift. I will only appeal to them to be patient with the government.”
