Ogun launches ‘one house, one toilet’ campaign

Ogun State Government has kicked off the ‘one house, one toilet’ campaign in Ijebu-North Local Government, as part of efforts to eradicate open defecation in the council and state.

The campaign was kicked-off through the Ogun State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RUWATSAN) Agency, in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with the theme: ‘The Implementation of NTD-WASH Based Community-led Sanitation (CLTS).

The campaign will cover 167 communities within Mamu, Omen, Ojowo-Japara and Osun wards in Ijebu-North Local Government. Commissioner for Rural Development, Mrs. Olufemi Ilori-Oduntan, says the campaign seeks to promote the use of toilets and good hygiene practices in every community across the state and Nigeria                         .

She said: “The Federal Government’s mandate to eradicate open defecation is embedded and signed in an Executive Order 009 in considering its prevalence and havoc.

“As one of the major strategies for scaling up sanitation; the result of which was that Ikenne Local Government being declared into ODF status in December 2023. The journey towards making Ijebu-North the second local government wide open defecation free starts today because we are sure that the remaining seven wards will also be considered soon.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural Development, Mr. Seyi Sokoya, said: “It is my hope, in view of the importance of this campaign to our national development process and meeting the goal of eradicating open defecation Nigeria, that, this campaign and other initiatives of this present administration will contribute to the success of the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector. “Sensitisation is a driving tool in achieving an Open Defecation Free Ogun, and so the campaign must be people-centred and community-based.

‘’This is why community engagement, especially in the vulnerable and underserved communities, is a priority to us. We also seek the support of local governments to cascade the policy to the people who are the direct beneficiaries.”

The Project Manager, Mr. Sola Ogunbo, said the practice of open defecation was a menace that had plagued the communities for too long, noting that it posed significant risks to the health, environment and economic development.

“Indeed, it is unacceptable that in this day and age, many of our citizens are still forced to defecate in the open, exposing themselves and their loved ones to the dangers of water-borne diseases, malnutrition and dignity-denying conditions and the future of the children.”

He said it also contributed to high health costs, reduced productivity and even loss of lives, adding that national statistics indicated that waterborne diseases claimed thousands of lives every year, yet they were preventable.

The UNICEF representative, Mr. Monday Johnson, said that it was imperative to eradicate open defecation through collective sensation of the stakeholders in the state, as the state did in Ikenne Local Government Area two year ago.

The Chairman of Ijebu-North Local Government, Mr. Bolaji Odusanya, represented by his Secretary, Mr. Sojinrin Adeniyi, lamented that it was discovered that truck drivers, motor boys and street traders were the main offenders of ‘’this nefarious act.

He urged stakeholders to implement decisions taken at the meeting to ensure open defecation was totally eradicated in the council and in the state at large.

Oyo govt to upgrade 66 PHCs

Oyo State Government has announced plans to upgrade 66 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, with at least two facilities in each of the 33 local governments set for revitalisation.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting yesterday in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the revitalisation of PHCs was a fundamental step in improving health care delivery at the grassroots level.

She said the initiative would ensure the provision of essential amenities needed for effective primary health care services.

“Primary Healthcare Centres serve as the first point of contact for medical care, making their efficiency crucial to the overall health care system. The government cannot do it alone; community involvement is key to sustaining these facilities. We urge stakeholders to take ownership and support this initiative for long-term success,” she said.

The Managing Director of First Health Dynamic Synergy International Ltd, Prof. Temitope Alonge, said three key criteria were used in selecting the PHCs for upgrade in each local government.

According to him, “the first criterion is the patient load. The two PHCs serving the largest population in each local government were prioritised. The second criterion is category 2 or 3 PHCs, while the third criterion is for facilities with an existing borehole and an alternative power source.”

He noted that the project would involve infrastructural improvements and provision of medical equipment such as installation of a 10KVA solar inverter system and borehole to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply.

The medical equipment supply of essential medical devices will include autoclave machines with gas cylinders, among others.

The upgrade will also include the implementation of a Drug Revolving Fund to ensure a steady supply of essential medicines. Security enhancement of the facilities will also be included in the upgrade.

Prof. Alonge urged Ward Development Committees (WDCs) and PHC Coordinators to take responsibility for the facilities, stressing that they belonged to the communities rather than the Primary Healthcare Board.

He said a shift in mindset towards ownership and accountability would be crucial in maintaining improved centres.

Alonge added that the same meeting would be replicated in other zones across the state for the WDC chairmen and PHC coordinators.

He said the health care centre upgrade stakeholders meeting was scheduled for March 4 and to end today.

“The three-day meeting will also focus on sustainable drug revolving funds, security of the primary health care centres, funding of primary health care services, infection control, health and safety in the PHCS, nursing process and nursing presence in the PHCS, documentation and health records, electronic medical record system, Point of Care Testing (POCT) for Malaria, Hepatitis, HIV/Syphilis, Typhoid, etc., handling haemoglobinometers and glucometers, medication dispensing and autoclaving and sterilisation techniques.

Ologere of Ogere, Oba James Obafemi Saliu, has handed over two security outposts recently built by him for the use of Southwest Security Network, otherwise called Amotekun and Vigilante Group of Nigerian (VGN), to the Ogun State Government.

The security outposts, worth several millions of Naira, are at two strategic locations within Ogere-Remo community in Ogun East Senatorial District. They will serve as the operational and administrative offices of the two security agencies in Ogere community.

The donation was meant to support Governor Dapo Abiodun in his commitment to ensuring adequate security, peace, law and order in the state.

Speaking at the handing over, Oba Saliu said he decided to elevate the popular security slogan of “ if you see something, say something” to  “ if you see something, do something” with the security outposts.

The monarch added that the gesture also “highlights the imperative of private individuals’ initiatives in supporting the state government’s provision of basic infrastructure to enhance the operational environments of security agencies for better services in addition to providing them reliable information to work with.

According to him, the construction of the security outposts for the Amotekun and Vigilante group also seeks to complement two buildings in his domain earlier donated to SO-SAFE and Agbekoya.

He recalled that he had also provided an operational vehicle for the Police Division at Ogere.

He said the contributions were in recognition of the invaluable services of the security agencies to the Ogere community and to motivate them for better performances.

The monarch added that there were always security needs and spaces to be filled in any society, and the task could not be left for the state government alone to accomplish.

According to the Ologere, security is the honeycomb that continually attracts the bees of prosperity, peace and happiness to any community.

He promised to do his best to ensure adequate security in Ogere community.

Receiving the two security outposts on behalf of the state government, the representative of the governor and Permanent Secretary Bureau of Cabinet and Special  Services,  Alhaji Olarenwaju Saka, mni,  thanked the Ologere for the kind gesture and enjoined other highly privileged citizens of the state to emulate the monarch’s philanthropic spirit.

Also present at the inauguration was the Ogun State Commander of Amotekun, Retired Brigadier Alade Isiaka Adedigba; a retired Commissioner of Police and former Commissioner of Police, Ogun State, and now Senior Consultant on Security to Ogun State Governor, Edward Awolowo Ajogun;  and the state Commander of the VGN.

The Amotekun Commander said he was happy that the Amotekun building was completed within a few months following the promises made to him by the Oba.

The VGN Commander noted that the building was a pleasant surprise and a thing of immeasurable joy.

The two agencies acknowledged that the security outposts and the attached residential quarters would facilitate their services to the community and promised to put them to good use.

According to security analysts, if emulated across the state, the Ologere’s kind gesture will help boost the state government’s commitment to secure and safer communities, as well as economic prosperity and social cohesion across the state.
