Afenifere Diaspora USA reaffirms leadership, warns against fragmentation

The leadership of Afenifere Diaspora USA has reaffirmed its position as the sole representative of Yoruba interests in the United States, warning against attempts to fragment the group.

In a statement on Tuesday, signed by Chairman Prof. Sikiru Fadairo and Secretary Comrade David Adenekan, the group emphasised its role as the officially recognized body representing the apex Yoruba sociopolitical organization, Afenifere, under the new acting leadership of Oba Olaitan Oladipo following the passing of Pa Ayodele Samuel Adebanjo.

The statement underscored Afenifere Diaspora USA’s mission to rebrand and strategically reposition the movement in alignment with the welfare ideology of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

The group highlighted it’s commitment to fostering socioeconomic development both in the diaspora and in Nigeria.

Drawing historical parallels, the group likened its role to that of Egbe Omo Oduduwa, the Yoruba nationalist organization established in 1945 in London by notable figures such as Sir Adeyemo Alakija, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Akinola Maja.

Afenifere Diaspora USA also urged the public to disregard any individuals or groups in the U.S. falsely claiming to represent Afenifere’s national leadership.

“Apart from Afenifere Diaspora USA that is officially recognized by the national body to represent Afenifere in the United States, it is of a great note for the general public to discountenance other groups or individuals in United States who are directly or tacitly representing Afenifere National body”.

Citing a recent interview with Oba Olaitan Oladipo on Arise News, the group reiterated that Afenifere remains a unified entity, stressing, “Afenifere is a one family umbrella as affirmed by our new acting national leader, Oba Olaitan Oladipo during a well broadcast interview, anchored by a veteran journalist, Dr. Reuben Abati on Arise News”.

Issuing a formal disclaimer, the leadership warned against unauthorized representations, labeling such claims as misleading, noting, “It is a tale of truth and falsehood to assume such titles or positions”.

Alao-Akala’s son hails Tinubu for funds to complete Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway

The lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North, South, and Oriire Federal Constituency, Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for approving funds for the completion of the Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway dualization.

He also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for his commitment to the progress of the project.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC), under President Tinubu’s leadership, recently awarded a N147.8 billion contract to Mssrs JRB Construction Co. Ltd for the road’s completion.

During the 2024 Budget Performance Review and the 2025 Budget Proposal for the Ministry of Works on January 29, the lawmaker engaged Umahi on the deplorable condition of the Oyo-Ogbomoso highway.

He emphasized the road is one of the busiest in the country, serving as a vital link between the northern and southern regions for the movement of goods and services.

He noted that the road was not included in the ministry’s 2025 budget, prompting concerns about its future.

But Umahi in his response acknowledged the oversight, citing budgetary constraints and assured that he would seek presidential intervention to facilitate the road’s reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Reacting to the approval during the Federal Executive Council on monday, Hon. Alao-Akala expressed satisfaction, stating that his persistent efforts had yielded positive results.

He reassured constituents that he would continue to monitor the project to ensure its timely completion.

He said: “President Tinubu, fully aware of the strategic importance of the Ibadan-Ilorin expressway, is committed to alleviating the challenges faced by road users, including students, traders, and haulage operators transporting goods and agricultural produce.”

He however described the funding approval as a major milestone for infrastructure development and economic growth in the region.

Edo governorship dispute: Tribunal reserves judgment in PDP, Ighodalo’s petition

    • Ighodalo, Okpebholo make final submissions
    • PDP candidate, Oshiomhole attend proceedings

Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, yesterday reserved judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in the September 21, 2024 governorship election held in the state, challenging the outcome of the election.

PDP and Asue Ighodalo are, in their petition, querying the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the election, which they claimed was marred by irregularities.

Shortly after lawyers to parties adopted their written addresses and made final submissions, the three-man tribunal, headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, announced that the date for judgment would be communicated to them.

Lawyer to the petitioners, Ken Mozia (SAN), in his final submission, contended that his clients had successfully demonstrated electoral malpractices in 765 polling units out of 4,519 across the state.

He noted discrepancies at various collation levels, where figures on Form EC8A (polling unit results) were allegedly reduced at the ward and local government collation stages (EC8B).

The petitioners’ lawyer added that INEC certified all documents tendered by the petitioners, but failed to present any counter-evidence.

He said: “The issue is not about producing an alternative result, but about questioning the validity of the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal uploads.”

Mozia argued that election petitions should be determined by the impact of irregularities on the process, not just the percentage of affected polling units.

He then prayed the tribunal to grant all the reliefs in the petition, including the voiding of Okpebholo’s victory.

Lawyer to INEC, Kanu Agabi (SAN), argued that the petition lacked merit, arguing that the tribunal could not annul the election because that was not the relief sought by the petitioners.

Agabi also argued that the tribunal could not declare that the petitioners were the winners of the election in the light of their assertion that the election was invalid.

He contended that the ground of non-compliance pleaded by the petitioners was not accompanied by the appropriate consequential relief, which would have been for the annulment of the election, adding that that ground was incompetent.

Agabi argued that the number of polling unit agents invited as witnesses by the petitioners was insignificant to represent the number of polling units in Edo State.

He claimed that the case of the petitioners was founded on analysis of documents and not what happened on the field on the day of the election.

Counsel for Okpebholo, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), described the petition as an “academic exercise,” arguing that the documents tendered by the petitioners, including Forms EC25B and EC40A, were “dumped in the court” without proper demonstration of their relevance.

He urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition.

Lawyer to the APC, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN), made similar arguments and prayed the tribunal to reject the petition.

Reacting to the day’s proceedings, a PDP chieftain in Edo State, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, expressed satisfaction with the proceedings, adding that the petitioners were confident of a positive outcome.

Ifaluyi-Isibor noted that the testimonies of the petitioners’ witnesses aligned with their claims, particularly concerning allegations of over-voting and incorrect collation of results in several polling units.

He argued that the number of witnesses presented did not always determine the strength of an election petition, citing Supreme Court decisions that place greater weight on the substance of evidence, rather than the volume of testimonies.

He added: “The petitioners are pleased with the proceedings of the court so far. Our counsel effectively demonstrated that testimonies given by witnesses were in consonance with our prayers.

“We are contesting results in 756 polling units out of over 4,000 in the state. Our arguments before the tribunal were clear, and we believe we have sufficiently substantiated our claims.”

Equally reacting, former APC national chairman and ex-governor of Edo State, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, said he was not convinced that the petitioners did enough to warrant the cancellation of the election.

Oshiomhole, who witnessed the tribunal’s proceedings yesterday, argued that “it is the duty of the petitioners to prove their allegations beyond doubt.

“I am satisfied with how the hearing went, but only the tribunal can determine the outcome.”

The PDP candidate, Ighodalo, who also witnessed the proceedings, declined to comment when approached by reporters.

The teachers are to be deployed in secondary schools across the state.

It said the recruitment was part of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s promise to solve the perennial problem of shortage of teachers in public schools.

The statement said: “Governor Aiyedatiwa had expressed concern over teaching staff shortages in public schools, particularly in rural communities. This necessitated his directive that the recruitment must be based on the peculiar needs of the understaffed schools across the state.

“The recruitment of teachers in primary and secondary schools is one of the efforts of the Aiyedatiwa administration in revamping the education sector.

“Last Friday, the governor approved the payment of N633million for the registration of students for the West African Examination Council’s (WAEC’s) Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.”

Okpebholo berates Edo PDP leaders over insecurity allegation

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed displeasure about the destructive criticisms on insecurity by the state Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chris Nehikhare.

Okpebholo, yesterday in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, accused Nehikhare of desperation.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to yet another reckless, misleading and baseless statement from Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee. His latest piece is nothing short of a desperate, fear-mongering diatribe designed to mislead Edo people, scare off potential investors and distract from the undeniable security progress being made under Governor Okpebholo.

Alaafin: All set for traditional rites

Ahead of the April 5 coronation, all is set for the mandatory traditional rites of the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade.

The Nation reports that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had on January 13 presented a certificate of appointment and staff of office to Oba Owoade at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, affirming his appointment as the 46th Alaafin.

After performing the traditional rites at some traditional homes in Oyo town, the new Alaafin will then enter ‘Ipebi’ (seclusion) for the conclusion of the traditional rites within a secluded part of the Alaafin palace.

Ebira youth leaders condemn Natasha’s allegation against Akpabio

    • …passes vote of no confidence in Kogi senator

A coalition of Ebira youth leaders has criticised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her recent allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a strongly worded statement, the youth leaders accused the senator of attempting to manipulate public opinion and tarnish the reputation of Akpabio for political gain.

The statement, jointly signed by the group’s president, Otori Onimisi Abdullahi, and secretary, Alhaji Omeiza Kadiri, dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims as baseless and inconsistent.

They questioned how the alleged harassment could have occurred in the presence of her husband and further challenged her assertion that it took place at Akpabio’s residence in Ikot-Ekpene—a property the Senate President’s wife, Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, has denied they own.

The youth leaders also criticized the senator’s conduct in the Senate chamber, labeling it as disorderly and disrespectful.

They dismissed her claims of victimization over her seat reassignment, arguing that such decisions are routine and not targeted at her personally.

“Why the unbridled thirst to sit near principal officers?” the group asked, suggesting that Akpoti-Uduaghan was more interested in media attention than legislative duties.

Furthermore, the statement accused the senator of having a history of making similar harassment allegations, citing previous claims against former presidential aide Reno Omokri and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

They also noted that none of her female colleagues in the Senate, including opposition members, had come forward in her defense.

Expressing dissatisfaction with Akpoti-Uduaghan’s performance as a lawmaker, the youth leaders declared a vote of no confidence in her representation of Kogi Central.

The group called for a thorough investigation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions into her conduct, urging that any findings of misconduct should result in appropriate disciplinary action.

They also warned that, if necessary, they would initiate a legal process to recall her from office.
