Ondo anti-corruption agency receives 49 petitions

The Ondo State Public Complaints, Financial Crime and Anti-Corruption Commission (SPFACC) said it has received 49 petitions since it was established last year.

It said some of the petitions were over government properties, government officials, individuals, and Non-Governmental Organizations.

Chairman of SPFACC, Justice Williams Akin Akintoroye (rtd), who spoke in an interview in Akure, admitted that fighting corruption was rough, difficult and not easy.

Justice Akintoroye said he has not been under pressure from any individual or government official over any of the petitions before the Commission.

Akintoroye said he has not received any petition against yahoo yahoo (internet fraudster) boys.

He said the Commission was yet to file any suit on cases where investigations have been concluded.

According to him, “Fighting corruption is not easy. More often than not, corruption fights back. You must be resolute and determined to go the whole hog to fight corruption or else somebody will turn back and that will amount to failure.

“There is no pressure yet from any outside influence. Sometimes there may be harassment, intimidation. Some may bring pressure for you to soft pedal. Suspects more than anything, want to protect their image.

“We have received 49 petitions. These petitions are from various sources. Few came from the government circle concerning government properties, some against government officials. We have from individuals and NGO. We have not received any petition against Yahoo boys. The law backs us to prosecute yahoo boys.

“We have not filed any suit for some obvious reasons on cases we have concluded investigations.

We have a cordial relationship with the ICPC. We synergise together. There is no rift between this Commission and the EFCC. But we believe we can come together and work together. I believe we are working towards the same goal. If we synergise., it will make the job easier for all of us.”

Justice Akintoroye, however, lamented at some individuals who dumped petitions on the Commission and failed to turn up for investigation.

He called on the public to have belief in the Commission’s ability to tackle corruption.
