Afonja canvasses continuous job creation, employment in Oyo

An Ogbomoso-born young politician, Prof. Abdulrahman Raphael Afonja (PARA), has claimed  he is one of the largest private employers of labor in Oyo state.

Afonja, a former Commissioner for Public Works and Transport in isneed , said there is a need to prioritise job creation as continuously done by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Speaking with journalists at a get-together party organised by the staff of his company in Ibadan, the agricultural administrator, who had combined experience in different businesses, academia, engineering, military, government, agriculture and nonprofit organizations (NGO) for over 24 years, said he believes his record in employing young people in Oyo state is unrivaled by individuals and most the private investors in the state.

Afonja is the Managing Director of Gamut Security and Escort Services, Gamut Engineering, and Technology Services, and Gletxtone Nigeria Limited with over 1,200 full-time and temporary employees in the three companies across ten sytates in with approximately over 400 currentl in Oyo State.

The former commissioner urged well-to-do individuals in Oyo state and investors to support the state government in setting up businesses that will take advantage of huge reserves of resources in different parts of the state as well as contribute to the drastic reduction of the unemployment rate.

According to him: “I am pleased to say that I have created employment opportunities for over 1200 citizens of Oyo state through the investments I made within the state. Today, I can boost that, I am one of the highest employers of labor in Oyo state.

“All the staff are indigenes of the state, not imported. I am a fearless advocate for the Citizens of Oyo state, and I have dedicated my life to listening to the needs of the common man and helping solve complex challenges for the people.

“All thanks to Governor Seyi Makinde, who had, over the years, created an enabling environment for individual businesses and investors to thrive. He still continues to provide adequate security for investments and businesses in the state as his long effort reflects in job security and creation.

“The economic and social effect of the 2024 massive recruitment made by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has directly reduced the unemployment rate in the state.

“Governor Makinde is not just a leader or administrator; he is a visionary man, whose commitment to leveraging youth potential and fostering innovation has set a new benchmark for sustainable development in governance since he resumed as the executive governor of Oyo state in 2019. His massive recruitment of youths to the State workforce in 2024 will no doubt have a large positive impact on the state economy and security.

“The Governor recruited 5, 600 teachers and 80 Caregivers through Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), recruited 6,736 teaching and 2,433 nonteaching for state secondary schools through Oyo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM). Not only that, over 902 job seekers were recruited into the state Civil Service while the Hospitals Management Board Recruitment (OYHMB) absorbed 332 to increase the workforce in the state health sector.

“The Governor also employed 562 to boost the state security architecture locally. The governor, in his kind gesture,, also approved the conversion of 1591 ad-hoc staff of the 33 local government councils in the state to permanent staff, an uncommon decision by a state governor.

“In addition, in the same year, 80 new job seeker youth were trained and given employment letters at the Oyo State Fire Service. Also, 3,933 health workers, including Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacist, Nutrition Officers, Community Health Officers, Health Attendance/Health Assistants, Health Educator, Driver, Watchmen, and others were employed in the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board (OYSPHCB).

“In 2024, Governor Makinde approved the employment of 500 abled youth into The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), adding to the regulation control and management of transport and other matters connected to efficient traffic within the state.

“With all the massive recruitment made by Governor Seyi Makinde lately in 2024, it is clear that there will be more positive effects on the state economy, security, and society. Private organizations, Private Schools, and business owners who had lost staff to the Oyo state mass recruitment will no doubt fill the position left by the new civil servants with enticing payment and give value to the available manpower.

“All these employments mean the state is maximizing the available manpower resources, turning the population liability into an asset with the state youth feeling hopeful. The latest recruitment will automatically also decrease the state’s economic load. The dependence of the unemployed on the state’s working population will also automatically decrease.

“There is evidence that unemployment is a risk indicator for increasing alcohol consumption, particularly in young men. Unemployment is also associated with increased tobacco consumption, increased use of illicit drugs as well as deteriorating health behavior.

“More so, the mortality rate is significantly higher among unemployed young men and women, especially in suicides and accidents, drug abuse has now been totally controlled by such massive recruitment as well as social causes which include increased risk of alienation, lack of financial resources, criminality and future exclusion from the labour market.”

Ooni, wife unveil N14.1billion ‘L’Extinction’ thorn carving artwork

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and his queen, Aderonke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi have unveiled ₦14.1billion L’Extinction’ thorn carving artwork to revive the art that has gone into extinction.

This was done to commemorate the 2025 Aje festival as Oba Ogunwusi gave his royal blessings of economic fortunes on L’Extinction artwork at Ooni’s palace, Adire Oduduwa, and Art Gallery.

Speaking at the event, Queen Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi explained that “L’Extinction also means ‘No to extinction’ artwork which was produced by Olapeju Twins and artist Olulaja Akeredolu from the endangered thorn trees which has almost disappeared from our forest. The disappearance of thorn trees was due to logging and deforestation activities of human beings.”

He noted: “Thorn carving artwork we are unveiling today is the most important piece of thorn carving in history because it is the first artistic carving that accurately tells us to say ‘No To Extinction’.”

The queen explained that the art piece was created to re-invent the art of thorn carvings, that famed artist Chief Justus Akeredolu from Owo invented in the 1930s which is currently going into extinction.

“Thorn Carving, which is an excellent illustration of African culture, was invented in Nigeria in the 1930s, about the same time that Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter in Denmark, created Lego wooden toys.

“Lego is now a multi-million dollar toy industry and has produced over 600 billion Logo toys, whereas our iconic miniature tree thorn carving has almost gone into extinction”. She stated.

She explained that “the value of the artwork is inscribed on the frame as €93 Million, which equates to ₦14.16billion. This value was to redress and level thorn carving that originated from our fatherland Nigeria with its counterpart lego toys, which was invented in Denmark in 1932.”

In her remark, Ambassador for Environment, Ms Olapeju Olayemi explained that the priceless art value stems not just from the extreme reality of thorn trees but also from the status of the princely hand-woven attire in which the thorn is placed and the fascinating backstory of thorn carving and lego toys invention in 1932.

Court intervenes in Lagos Central Mosque leadership dispute

…directs Chief Imam to lead Ramadan lecture

In a dramatic legal showdown on Monday, February 26, the Federal High Court in Lagos intervened in an ongoing leadership crisis at the Lagos Central Mosque, issuing an order to maintain peace as Ramadan approaches.

The case, filed by the Registered Trustees of the Jamat-Ul-Muslimeen Council of Nigeria (Lagos Central Mosque), challenges the appointment of Alhaji (Chief) Sikiru Alabi-Macfoy as the Baba Adinni of Lagos and Chairman of the Executive Council.

The plaintiffs, represented by Dr. ‘Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, argue that Alabi-Macfoy’s appointment was made without consulting the Chief Imam, the mosque’s spiritual leader.

A key point of contention is that Alabi-Macfoy has not been turbaned by the Chief Imam, making his claim to the title invalid.

The dispute has escalated as both factions plan to host competing Ramadan lectures, raising fears of possible unrest.

The plaintiffs urged the court to issue an urgent preservatory order to prevent a breakdown of law and order, especially with Ramadan just days away. However, Alabi-Macfoy’s legal team, led by Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, and Mr. Kunle Adegoke, SAN, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to intervene at this stage.

The first and second defendants’ counsel, Kunle Oyesanya, SAN, strongly opposed the application on jurisdictional grounds.

Despite these objections, Justice Lewis-Allagoa ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, ordering all parties to maintain the status quo and refrain from any actions that could incite unrest within the mosque.

The Court further ordered that since there is no dispute that the Chief Imam is the Spiritual Head of the mosque, the Chief Imam can proceed and should not be prevented from holding and overseeing the forthcoming Ramadan lecture of the Mosque and shall oversee all other mosque affairs, pending further court hearings.

The case has now been adjourned to the 3rd day of March, 2025

Ekiti speaker restores electricity to constituency, ends years of blackout

The Owa of Odo Ayedun Ekiti, Oba Solomon Ilesanmi Ajibade, has commended the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, for restoring electricity to the community after years of perpetual power outage.

In a commendation letter dated February 25, 2025, and personally signed by the monarch, Oba Ajibade expressed gratitude to the Speaker, noting that business activities, previously crippled by the blackout, are now reviving following the community’s reconnection to the national grid.

Writing on behalf of his people, the monarch praised Aribasoye’s dedication to the welfare of his constituents, describing him as a selfless and sacrificial leader.

He highlighted that the repair of two faulty transformers, replacement of armoured cables, and provision of transformer oil played a crucial role in reactivating the community’s electrical infrastructure, leading to steady power supply and a gradual economic revival.

“On behalf of the good people of Odo Ayedun, we express our heartfelt gratitude and deepest appreciation for your timely intervention in the repair of transformers, replacement of armoured cables and provision of barrels of transformer oil that will afford our community to enjoy steady electricity supply after years of darkness.

“We appreciate your kindness, commitment and care. This selfless act is a demonstration of your dedication to service delivery and promotion of wellbeing of the people of our dear community”.

Meanwhile, Aribasoye, disclosed that he championed the restoration of electricity to the Community, to bolster the growth of local economy and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSMEs).

Speaking with journalists in Ado Ekiti, on Wednesday, the Speaker described the MSMEs’ development as a function of electricity supply, adding that no community can witness growth when artisans and owners of businesses are closing shops permanently due to lack of electricity supply.

Aribasoye was upbeat that the electricity restoration will create jobs, upscale nightlife and boost of local economy, so that all the strata of the society can actively participate in the economic activities.

The Speaker lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji for reconnecting 41 Ekiti communities back to the national grid, after several years of power outage, saying his recent effort would go a long way in complementing the governor’s rural development policy.

“Besides bringing an upswing to nightlife and prevent the artisans from losing millions of naira monthly, the gesture would help in abating the spiralling security threat in the constituency, since criminals often operate unchallenged under darkness.

“I charge the Benin Electricity Distribution Company to provide Prepaid Metres to his constituents and abolish the contentious estimated and bulk billing systems that are generating controversies between some communities and the distribution company.

“If you look at Governor Oyebanji’s policies, rural development is a key pillar and this accounted for why the current governor prioritized rural electrification as a focus of government, because without electricity, there won’t be job or wealth creation.

“Within two years the governor assumed office, 41 communities in Gbonyin, Ijero, Ekiti East, Ekiti West and others, had been reconnected to national grid. Those towns are now doing exceptionally well in terms of economic engagements and job as well as wealth creation.

“Ayedun Ekiti is a community under my constituency and the town is strategic to the economic survival of the Ajoni LCDA and Ikole Local Government as a whole. The restoration of light after years of perpetual darkness will automatically bring a respite to artisans and business owners operating in that axis”.
