Oyo to clamp down on street trading

Oyo State Government has announced its readiness to clamp down on traders selling by the roadsides.

It said steps were being taken to address street trading and others.

The Chairperson of Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd.), said this while participating in a radio programme that highlights the activities, achievements and prospects of the state government tagged: ‘Oro Oyo’.

She urged citizens to embrace lawfulness and desist from display of goods on walkways and roadsides, ‘’as this now attracts fines and penalties with immediate enforcement.’’

Justice Aderemi said: ‘‘We need to maintain a clean environment, orderliness, coordination and sustainability of the infrastructural architecture of the state, to attract foreign and local investors for the social-economic development of our state.”

She noted that it had become worrisome having to spend hours in traffic caused by illegal display of wares by the roads, thereby impeding traffic flow, coupled with the negative and harmful effects street trading was having on the lives of residents and state’s image.

She said: “Roadside traders should get ready to face the full weight of the law and instant legal consequences.

“Town criers will move round with the team to create awareness before enforcement will then take place.”

Akufo descendants affirm Ejiogbe as Alakufo of Akufo

Prominent sons and daughters of Akufo town in Ido local government area of Oyo State under ‘Akufo Descendants Group’ have affirmed that Chief Abideen Olajide, otherwise known as ‘Ejiogbe’ Alakufo of Akufo.

The group said Olubadan of Ibadanland, who is the consenting and prescribing authority on the appointment of Baales in Ibadan has also affirmed Ejiogbe as the authentic and legally recognised Alakufo of Akufo.

A statement by family head of Akufo on behalf of the group, Chief Muibi Ajayi-Alakufo said: “On December 18, 2023, the then Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun in a letter personally signed by him and directed to Abideen Olajide Ejiogbe affirmed his appointment.

“The letter stated that “I, Alayeluwa Oba Dr. (Sen.) Mohood Olalekan Ishola Balogun (Alli Okunmade II, Olubadan of Ibadanland, the consenting and prescribed authority of Ibadanland, do hereby give my consent to the appointment of Alh. Olajide Abideen Abimbola as Alakufo of Akufo, Ido Local Government area, Ibadanland with effect from Monday 18th December, 2023 in accordance with section 22(2) of the Chief’s Law Cap. 28 of Oyo State 2000.”

Ajayi-Alakufo said the Olubadan in an earlier letter by the Secretary of the Olubadan Advisory Council, K. Liasu and dated December 15, 2023 titled appointment as Baale Akufo Township in Ido Local Government requested Abideen Olajide, and indeed entire members of the family males and females who were signatories to his appointment to appear before him, which they all did amidst funfair, pomp and pageantry.

He said a report by one Taoreed Ololade Adefisoye that he was Alakufo and that Baale Abideen Olajide Ejiogbe should stop parading himself as Alakufo was a sad one with the intent to distort history and cause crisis and fans ember of disunity in Akufoland.

“In our Akufo town, Taoreed Ololade Adefisoye bandying a letter from the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs that he was recognized as Baale Akufo, is being mischievous because it is a known fact that Olubadan remains the prescribing and consenting authority for the appointment of Baales in Ibadanland.

“We had several meetings at Ido Traditional Council led by High Chief Isioye and at Bodija residence of Baba Isioye and indeed at the Palace of Oluabadan on three different occasions and the Olubadan Committee and the Olubadan Advistoy Council after listening to both camps (Ejiogbe and Ololade) also went through the historical documents of Akufoland and affirmed Abideen Olajide Ejiogbe as the rightful heir to the throne of Alakufo.

“And the Olubadan via two separate letters quoted above subsequently appointed Abideen Olajide Ejiogbe as the Baale of Akufo amidst celebration galore which was devoid of any crisis or violence.

“We the sons and daughters of Akufo understand that two high chiefs in the Olubadan Advisory Council are the backers of Ololade against our chequered history which made two ruling houses (Ayinla and Ogunbunmi), the heirs to the throne on rotational basis.

“Unfortunately, these high chiefs saw the truths when we came before them for meetings prior to the appointment and coronation of Abideen Olajide in December 2023 but they are still trying to rewrite the history of Akufo for reasons best known to them.”

  • The untiring FIRS boss

    The untiring FIRS boss

    By Arabinrin Aderonke

When I ventured into the office to see the tax boss, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, I was met with an unexpected sight.

He was wearing a face cap, a T-shirt, and jeans. It was the first time I had seen him dressed so casually during official hours, and I couldn’t help but smile and think, “This is so unlike him.” But before I could ask, I learned he was heading out for an inspection of the ongoing construction of the FIRS headquarters. This is the Dr. Zacch, we know, very demure, very mindful, and always prepared to take action.

The Tax Boss is not your regular chairman. Since his first day in office, he has been on the move, handling one responsibility after another with so much energy. It’s no wonder he was casually dressed; he was ready to dive into the work at hand.

The construction of the FIRS Headquarters is a long-awaited project. It has been on the agenda of the agency for over 20 years but has experienced delays and setbacks. Dr. Zacch is now ready to ensure its completion during his tenure. His hands-on attitude is clear in everything he does, and the inspection was no different.

When Dr. Zacch arrived at the site. He didn’t just walk about; he inspected every detail with the seriousness of a man on a mission. He was interested in the structural design, material quality, and even project timeframes. It was clear that he wasn’t just there for the appearance; he wanted to make sure everything was in order.

The Tax Boss spoke to the engineers and workers, saying, “Let’s hurry up and get this done.”Together, we will scale through.” His energy was contagious, and you could see the workers feeling motivated by his presence.

And, yes, we are just a few weeks into 2025, but Dr. Zacch is showing workings. FIRS’s momentum is at an all-time high, and the agency will move back-to-back again this year. Every decision, visit, and action is aimed at transforming the FIRS into Nigeria’s tax administration powerhouse.

Dr. Zacch sets an example for public servants everywhere, demonstrating that leadership is about action, not just words. This visit was eye-opening for me, as it demonstrated what true leadership entails: rolling up your sleeves, putting in the effort where it matters most, and staying involved at all times.

FIRS is an unstoppable agency in Nigeria. The new headquarters represents a vision for the future and a commitment to transforming the agency. It will stand as a testament to FIRS’ efficiency, transparency, and progress.

The next time you hear someone mention Dr. Zacch Adedeji (Tax Boss), think beyond his everyday suits or sometimes casual outfits (t-shirt and jeans) while inspecting projects. Think of a leader who is proactive in his quest for excellence, committed to changing the tax system, and who prioritizes taxpayers in Nigeria.

He is a man building the foundation for a stronger and more efficient system that will benefit all Nigerians.
