2027 governorship candidacy not on table yet, says Ogun APC

Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said its focus is on supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun to succeed in delivering more developmental projects to the people and not candidature of 2027.

It said the matter of ‘candidacy 2027’ or the  ‘governorship ticket’ was neither on its table nor the leaders, stressing that the preoccupation of the party remained the unfolding legacy projects of the governor, which, it noted, would certainly boost the standing of Ogun APC at the next general election.

State APC Publicity Secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, made this known yesterday in a statement while reacting to a media report alluding that the party stakeholders had opted for Kayode Amusan’s candidacy for 2027.

He said the report had given rise to justifiable misinterpretations and subsequent flood of inquiries by party members and stakeholders, desirous of clarification concerning the matter. Oladunjoye reminded members that the party had an established structure and procedure to apply the big sticks for those who overstepped their bounds.

He said: “Since this morning, I have been inundated with inquiries on a publication by a national newspaper whose headlined today reported that: ‘2027: Ogun APC Stakeholders Opt for Amusan’s Candidacy’.

“As a media man and having reviewed the headline along with the body of the report, I realised that while the headline may be crafty and catchy, however, it leads to justifiable misinterpretations; which have fuelled inquiries by party leaders and members.

“For the avoidance of doubt and with all sense of responsibility, the issue of the candidacy for the 2027 governorship ticket of the APC is not on the table of the party and its leaders for now.

“The current preoccupation of the party is to support our performing governor and leader of the party, Prince Abiodun, in executing his unfolding legacy projects, which will certainly boost the standing of our party at the next general election.

“While members have the right to project their preferred aspirants, we must be wary of misinformation that may heat up the polity and create needless rumours and rancour.

“It is needless to remind members that the party has the established structure and procedure to apply the big sticks for those who overstep their bounds.”

  • Integrate trafficking, migration literacy into academic curricula, says minister

Integrate trafficking, migration literacy into academic curricula, says minister

Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has called on universities and higher institutions to integrate human trafficking awareness and migration literacy into their curricula as a tool for breaking the cycle of trafficking and illegal migration.

Speaking as Special Guest Speaker at the 2025 annual academic summit at the University of Abuja on Wednesday, the minister stressed that education remains the most powerful tool in equipping young girls with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed choices about their future.

In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Publicity, Mr Jonathan Eze, Sulaiman-Ibrahim noted that quality and functional university education must go beyond theory and be practical, relevant, and empowering.

She added that academic institutions must be intentional in preparing students, particularly young women, for economic independence.

The minister set out the context of her presentation by referencing some statistics, which, according to her, do not do justice to the immense potential that the country holds.

The statement reads in part: “It is an honor and a privilege to stand before this distinguished gathering as a Special Guest Speaker at this year’s Annual Academic Summit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Abuja.

“Today’s event holds a deep personal significance for me – not only because it addresses a critical national and global issue but also because it brings me back to the very institution that shaped my academic and professional journey.

“Nigeria is one of the main source, transit, and destination countries for human trafficking in Africa. According to the Global Slavery Index (2023), Nigeria ranks among the top 10 countries with the highest number of trafficked persons.

“An estimated 1.4 million Nigerians are victims of modern slavery, with women and girls making up the majority. Over 60 per cent of Nigerians attempting to migrate irregularly are women and girls, many of whom are trafficked for forced labour or sexual exploitation.

“Reports indicate that over 50,000 Nigerian women are trapped in forced prostitution across Europe, particularly in Italy and Spain.

“The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 80 per cent of Nigerian women who arrive in Europe through irregular routes are potential trafficking victims.

“The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reports that Nigeria accounts for nearly 50 per cent of all human trafficking cases in West Africa.

“These figures underscore the urgent need for policy, awareness, and systemic interventions to combat the menace of human trafficking and illegal migration.

“Illegal migration and trafficking do not happen in a vacuum. Several factors contribute to the vulnerabilities of Nigerian girls, including  Poverty and Economic Hardship, Lack of Education and Skills, Cultural and Gender Norms, and Weak Law Enforcement, amongst others.”

The minister encouraged financial literacy programmes to help students understand money, investment and self-reliance.

She called for Migration Counseling Centers to equip students with legal migration options and professional guidance.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim recommended community engagement and advocacy training to raise awareness and educate young girls about the dangers of trafficking, among others.

She further stated that as the Minister of Women Affairs, she is committed to advancing initiatives that promote education, skills development, and economic empowerment to prevent vulnerable girls from falling into the hands of traffickers.

“The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs has developed a Strategic Roadmap in line with the Presidential Mandate of our Leader, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, under which we are implementing key policy-driven interventions to address these challenges.

“We are working round the clock to strengthen our Legal Frameworks.

“We are working with lawmakers to review and enhance protection laws for women and children, to close existing loopholes.

“I recently inaugurated a Committee to review the Child Rights Act of 2003.”

The minister concluded that the fight against illegal migration and girl-child trafficking is a fight for the soul of the nation.

“If we fail to act decisively, we risk losing an entire generation of young women to exploitation, violence, and despair.”

The high point of the event was when the minister handed over a brand new tablet device to a student, Miss Judith Obodoagu, who is also a fashion designer to advance her entrepreneurial skills.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi, the convener, Prof. Mutiullah Olasupo, former Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, and others encouraged the students to face their studies and focus on a bright future that awaits them.

  • Eleruwa tussle: Ruling house dumps kinsman, backs Olaribikusi ruling house

Eleruwa tussle: Ruling house dumps kinsman, backs Olaribikusi ruling house

The Gbajumola/Ofiki of Akalakoyi Ruling House in Eruwa town has distanced itself from any attempt to hijack the right of Olaribikusi Ruling House to produce the next Eleruwa of Eruwa in Ibarapa East local government area of Oyo State.

The Ruling House dumped its kinsman, deposed Oba Samuel Adegbola, saying backing Adegbola as Eleruwa again would be tantamount to cheating their brethren (Laribikusi) and creating bad blood between the two ruling houses.

A letter to Governor Seyi Makinde by Prince Abolanle Akeem, Prince Adedokun Amos, Prince Adejumobi Olugbade, Prince Afolabi Abimbola, Prince Oloyede Raji, Princess Bosede Oyebola, Prince Kolawole Olaniyan and Prince Adejumobi Olukunle on behalf of the family urged the Governor to prevail on those seeking to destabilise rotational process between the two royal houses and impose their anointed candidate from Akalakoyi to rescind their decision.

The Akalakoyi called on Makinde to ensure that the selection process of new Eleruwa is fair, transparent and in accordance with the provisions of the 1957 Eleruwa Chieftaincy Declaration.

The letter reads: “We, the members of Gbajumola/Ofiki of Akalakoyi Royal Family, write to bring to your attention on the ongoing Eleruwa Kingship tussle in Eruwaland, Ibarapa East Local Government Area State.

“As stakeholders in this matter, we deem it necessary to provide clarification and guidance on the proper interpretation of the 1957 Eleruwa Chieftaincy Declaration.

“As you may be aware, the Eleruwa Kingship is rotational between the two ruling houses: Akalakoyi and Laribikusi. Following the demise of Oba Bolanle Olaniyan Gbajumola II from

Akalakoyi, it was the turn of Olaribikusi to produce the successor.

“However, the selection of Oba Samuel Adegbola from Olaribikusi was challenged in court and ultimately led to his dethronement on November 29, 2019 due to his ineligibility to be the Eleruwa.

“The Supreme Court ruling explicitly stated that the new Eleruwa should be selected from Laribikusi House, as it is still their turn. This decision is in line with the Yoruba adage, “ti Oba kan o ba ku, omiran kii je,” which emphasizes the importance of respecting the rotational order of the kingship.

“As you may be aware, your government has already initiated the process for selecting a new Eleruwa through the Afobaje, in line with the Supreme Court ruling and the 1957 Eleruwa Chieftaincy Declaration.

“We believe that it is essential to respect the rotational order of the kingship and allow Laribikusi to produce the next Eleruwa.

“Thank you for your time and consideration. We appreciate your attention to this matter and trust that you will take the necessary steps to ensure that justice, transparency, and faimess prevail in the selection of the next Eleruwa.”

Representatives of the Laribikusi family while featuring on a popular radio programme in Ibadan (Dende Oro) to discuss the ongoing crisis surrounding the throne of Eleruwa provided insights into the Eleruwa Chieftaincy declaration of 1957/58, which recognises only two royal families – Laribiku and Akalako – as eligible to ascend the throne.

The Laribikusi family representatives who appeared on the programme included Prince Mukaila Adejumo, Prince Azeez Olabode, Prince Mike Oke, Prince Ijaola Olabode and Alhaji Hazim Bello among others.

According to them: “Oba Bolanle Olaniyan, who reigned as Eleruwa until his death in 1994, was a member of the Akalako family. His successor, Oba Samuel Adegbola, also from the Akalako family, was removed by the Supreme Court on November 29, 2019, for allegedly reigning illegally.”

They appealled to Makinde to come to their aid so that the right be done and they will not be denied of their heritage.
