Oyo lawmaker calls for mandatory drug testing in government recruitment

Hon. Dawood Al-Ameen, representing Ibadan North-West State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, has proposed making drug testing a compulsory part of the recruitment process for government employees.

The lawmaker emphasized that this measure would help prevent individuals with substance abuse issues from being placed in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and security.

In his motion, Al-Ameen acknowledged the efforts of Governor Seyi Makinde in strengthening the education sector, including the recruitment of over 5,000 teachers and 600 education officers. However, he raised concerns about the risks of hiring individuals with substance addiction.

The House has called on the executive arm of government to collaborate with relevant agencies to implement mandatory drug testing for all prospective government employees during recruitment.

“Some candidates may have certain dispositions and habits that might not be easily detected through standard oral interviews.

“Among these dispositions is the potential addiction to prohibited substances, which could impair judgment and lead to misbehavior”, the motion reads in part.

The motion specifically mentioned the need for drug testing for prospective teachers, healthcare workers, and law enforcement officers, including those in the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) and Amotekun.

“The tests should screen for substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and tramadol, among others. Institutionalizing drug testing will enhance the integrity of the workforce, improve security, and protect the interests of the state”, it added.

  • Women have much to contribute to church leadership – UI Don

Women have much to contribute to church leadership – UI Don

A professor of New Testament Studies (literature, theology, exegesis, and African biblical hermeneutics), Olubayo Obijole, has stated that women have a lot to offer in church leadership.

He made the statement while delivering the 574th inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan on behalf of the Faculty of Arts, entitled “Revolution in African Christianity: Women Church Leadership”

Professor Obijole examined the role of women in Christianity and asked fundamental questions such as: if women are in the majority in church population, why are they deprived of leading the church of God?; is leadership the exclusive preserve of the male folk?; what was God’s purpose for making them male and female?; are women not also made by God to be leaders?; and what is the biblical and Christian position of women? among others.

He submitted that the fact that women are accepted as spiritual leaders in Pentecostal and Aladura churches is a revolutionary change in African Christianity which has broken down the barriers of the exclusively male dominated leadership of christian churches in Africa.

Professor Obijole said research showed that although women were of low status in the sociocultural life of the ancient world, few women still played outstanding leadership roles in the Old testament, judaism, rabbinic judaism, hellenistic judaism and in the greco-roman world.

He said despite the general low status of women, Jesus Christ accorded women recognition and defended them in their state of societal rejection, and accepted them as disciples, as examples of faith and committed life but he appointed no woman as an Apostle probably because the then sociocultural environment did not favour it.

The Inaugural Lecturer argued that the unity of the human race in Christ without any human discrimination overrides all other issues for and against women leadership in church ministry.

He said the African Indigenous Aladura and Pentecostal churches have keyed into the unity of mankind in Christ to give more space for women in leadership.

He stated that this shows that women can do better, not just as the majority in church membership but can also be leaders of church ministry and better spiritual leaders if given the opportunity.

He concluded that the church must continue to listen to the Holy Spirit and accord women their rightful place in all the ministeries of the church.

Professor Obijole however, cautioned that women must not seek to be like men nor should men seek to be like women in unhealthy rivalry, but recognize that God created the two sexes to be united, complimentary, interdependent, cooperative, and in unity in diversity for the beauty and order of creation.

The Inaugural Lecture was the 24th in the series for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Investor, Oyo govt differ on alleged ‘forceful ejection’, investment loss

Aspian Bitumen Limited, an Ibadan-based local investor, has claimed to lose billions of naira following a quit notice order issued by the Oyo State government at its operation base in Makanju village, Akinyele Local Government Area.

However, the Oyo State Ministry of Lands and Housing stated that the quit notice was served due to the company’s alleged infringement on the Right of Way of the Ibadan Circular Road.

Ayoola Bello, Managing Director of Aspian Bitumen Limited, disclosed that the acquired land contains a minimum deposit of 90 million tons of granite, valued at approximately one trillion naira.

According to Bello, harnessing this resource could significantly boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He further explained that the company’s operations were halted by a state government agency, leading to losses amounting to billions of naira despite an existing court order.

Bello lamented the setback, revealing that investors from the USA, who visited Nigeria in July 2024 and were encouraged to invest in the country’s solid minerals sector, had plans to establish a factory in Ibadan.

He also noted that the land at Makanju village, acquired since 1979, has been developed responsibly and enjoyed support from local villagers over the years.

Bello said, “The possibility of getting lithium oxide for electrical battery is been exploited in this direction. Our company brought investors from the USA to explore the resource and build a factory in Ibadan.

“The team of investors came to Nigeria in July 2024 and visited the Director of Solid Minerals in Abuja when they were encouraged that Nigeria is a Destination for Investment.

“Our research has shown that when we commence work at the quarry, we will reach a level when abundant water that could serve the whole of Ibadan would be discovered. We are looking at how to utilize the benefits of water supply to the citizenry.

“However, it is sad to note that the state government through one of its agencies shutdown our operations which culminated into the loss amounting to billions of naira even with the existing court order.

“We were made to know that the decision was taken in the interest of the public. It is worthy of note that since the land was acquired in 1979, we have been mindful of the public Interest

“Since we acquired the land in 1979, we have been managing the land so as not to be encumbered with house development. The Makanju villagers have been very cooperative in protecting the quarry. Building at the proximity of the quarry was prevented so as not to constitute an impediment to mining activities.”

But, reacting to the claim, the State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo in a letter titled; Enforcement Notice regarding Unauthorized Occupation of Government Land designated for the Circular Road Construction Project ordered the Company to remove all machinery, equipment, and materials from the said land within the period

The letter which was signed by TPL Sorunke F.O on behalf of the Commissioner read in part; “Following the official visit to your quarry site on Tuesday 21st January, 2025 during which statutory enforcement notices were served to order the removal of the machinery and equipment placed by your Company on a portion of land that is designated for the ongoing Circular Road, I wish to reiterate that the blockage constitutes an obstruction to the timely and successful execution of this critical public infrastructure project.

“It should be emphasized that the land in question falls within the Circular Road Right of Way and should be vacated to enable unhindered progress of the road construction.

“Meanwhile, it is disheartening to note that, despite the earlier statutory notices issued to you since September, 2023 on same matter, you have flagrantly disregarded the State Government’s order to remove the encumbrances created on the subject site.

“For the avoidance of doubt, even the portion of Senator Abiola Ajimobi GRA land encroaching on the Circular Road’s Right of Way would be adjusted accordingly.

“To this end, you are to remove all machinery, equipment, and materials from the said land within the period stipulated in the notice served. Kindly note that this correspondence serves as a formal reiteration of the enforcement notice previously issued and you are urged to act swiftly to ensure compliance and avoid unnecessary disruption to the ongoing project”

  • How Afe Babalola agreed to withdraw suit against Farotimi

How Afe Babalola agreed to withdraw suit against Farotimi

In a dramatic turn of events, eminent lawyer and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, has agreed to withdraw criminal defamation charges against a human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi.

The decision was facilitated by prominent Yoruba monarchs, including Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who appealed to Babalola to drop the charges.

Babalola had initially rejected appeals from notable Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Bishop Matthew Kukah, but agreed to withdraw the charges after the plea of the traditional rulers.

Farotimi was facing criminal defamation and cybercrime charges at an Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, over allegations in his book: ‘Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System’, which accused Babalola of influencing Supreme Court judges.

However, the case took a dramatic turn when prominent Yoruba monarchs led by Oba Ogunwusi intervened. The traditional rulers had seen the defamation case as a threat to the unity and stability of the Yoruba nation, and had decided to act.

In a closed door meeting with Babalola on Sunday midnight at ABUAD’s White Rock in Ado-Ekiti, which lasted for four hours, the monarchs appealed to him to withdraw the defamation case against Farotimi.

A source privy to the meeting said the monarchs told Babalola that the case was causing tension and division among Nigerians, and that it was in the best interest of the country for it to be withdrawn.

Oba Ogunwusi, who spoke on behalf of the Yoruba monarchs, shortly after the meeting, described the deliberation as very successful, saying the legal icon had agreed to forgive and withdraw the defamation case against Farotimi.

The first-class monarch hailed the legal icon for building his integrity over the years, noting that his reputation remained untarnished.

“We are coming together as a race to take this thing from you. Baba, you have told the world and they have heard you clearly. We can see that you have fought every battle to sustain that name you have built.

“Nobody can undermine your name. You have proved to the world that this is what you stand for. We are very proud of you. It’s a lesson for us as a race. We want to appeal and also use our race to instruct you. It is not your wish, but we are taking it because of the race.

‘’Baba, we want to appeal and also use our race to instruct you. Dele Farotimi is your son, you may not know him, we give birth to different children in this world, some are tough, some are soft, some are hard.

“Why we are here is our ethos as a race and we cannot take anything that is so hard for you. We are using the race because our elders too have spoken. Combining traditional institutions is what we are using to take this from you,” Oba Ogunwusi said.

Alleged defamation: Ighodalo sues Edo APC chair for N500m

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last Edo governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, has sued the Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, for N500million, over alleged defamation.

In the writ of summons marked LD/ADR/5731/2025 at the High Court of Lagos, Ighodalo also sought a declaration that all the statements made by the defendant in the defamatory video published and circulated online on December 10, 2024, amount to defamation.

The plaintiff prayed the court to order Tenebe to issue a letter of apology to him within seven days of the judgment.

Ighodalo sought a declaration that the statements made by Tenebe in an interview with TMC TV/Radio on December 17, 2024, to the effect that the claimant (Ighodalo) is a thief, amount to defamation.

He prayed for an order directing the defendant to withdraw the defamatory statements by publishing a retraction on all platforms where the defamatory statements were published.

Ighodalo, former chairman of Sterling Bank PLC, Dangote Flour Mills plc and Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), said through his lawyers that “the primary objective of procuring the publication of the defamatory video was to tarnish his reputation.”

He added: “Since the publication of the defamatory video, our client has received numerous calls from professional colleagues, business partners and other well-meaning Nigerians, locally and in the diaspora, inquiring as to the propriety of the allegations.

“Undoubtedly, this development has exposed our client to great distress, hurt and humiliation.”
