Fernandes gives Hughes vote of confidence

Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes claims he is completely behind manager Mark Hughes after he saw his club slump to their sixth defeat of the season away to Arsenal on Saturday.

Hughes has been the subject of increased speculation regarding his future at QPR following a winless start to the Premier League this season.

But Fernandes took to Twitter to defend his manager and explain that whatever has been written in the press has no truth at all.

He tweeted: ”Mark has my backing and the shareholders. We need a little luck and no injuries. What’s written in the press is all rubbish.

“I honestly believe we have one of the best managers in the premier league. And we are in for the long term. Whatever happens. We love QPR.”

Fernandes also pleaded with the fans to trust him on his decision to stick with Hughes through what is a difficult time for the club and welcomed any fans with any questions to approach him at their next home fixture against Reading next Sunday.

“I’ll be there at Reading so Rangers fans I’ll be available to meet and chat. Trust me on this one. Keep the faith. Stability is the key.”

Hughes brought 12 new players in at Loftus Road in the summer, in an attempt to improve on their final day relegation survival last season, but still finds his side bottom of the league with just three points from their opening nine games.

  • Onyedinma wants more FIFA seminars, thumbs up NFF

Onyedinma wants more FIFA seminars, thumbs up NFF

The Chairperson of the Nigeria Women League Board (NWLB) Dili Onyedinma has expressed happiness over the recently held first-ever FIFA Women Coaching Seminar organised by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and financed by FIFA for women football coaches in the country, saying the development is an indication of a better future for women football in Nigeria.

The six-day clinic which was held in Park View Hotel and FIFA Goal Project center, Abuja was supervised by a South African FIFA instructor, Fran Hilton Smith who thumbed-up the attitude and conduct of the participants.

Onyedinma, while reacting to newsmen after the event, commended the leaders of the NFF who she said for the first time facilitated a training and capacity building programme for Nigeria’s women football coaches.

“The second FIFA Member Association Elite Course for referees, referee instructors and physical fitness instructors, just ended in Abuja, and we’ve just witnessed the first-ever FIFA Women Coaching Seminar. These are part of several high-profile coaching clinics and refereeing courses that the Aminu Maigari administration attracted to Nigeria since coming into office two years ago”, Onyedinma noted.

She urged the 25 women football coaches invited for the exercise out of which about 20 took part to maximize all the derivable benefits associated with the clinics and bring the knowledge to bear on the game.

The NWLB boss however, called for more such programmes maintaining that if Nigeria must maintain its dominances of women football in Africa more emphasis should be placed on capacity building of technical personnel.

Also speaking in the same vein, Coach Ngozi Okafor, who is handling FTC Queens FC of Abuja in the Nigeria Women League and was also among participants at the clinics said the clinics would in no small measure boost their level of productivity as a soccer coach handling women.

Okafor noted that the FIFA instructor who conducted the clinic was quite resourceful and had really imparted in them modern coaching techniques by taking them through many new helpful coaching routings during the practical aspect of the workshop.

Among other coaches that took part in the course were Ann Chiejine, who was first-choice goalkeeper for the Super Falcons at three FIFA World Cup finals, the 2000 Olympic Games and several African Women Championship finals, and Rita Nwadike, another former Super Falcons’ star who is Assistant Coach of the current Super Falcons’ squad.

  • Tyson’s Australia visa row resumes

    Tyson’s Australia visa row resumes

The decision to grant former boxing champion Mike Tyson an Australia visa has erupted once more after a women’s group protested.

Mike Tyson will travel to Australia next month to give motivational speeches.

The former world heavyweight champion is embarking on a worldwide tour giving motivational speeches centred on his life and career. Tyson was supposed to visit Australia and New Zealand as part of the tour but ran into difficulties with his New Zealand and Australia visa applications.

The former champion was initially granted a New Zealand visa before the decision was retracted due to the former boxer’s 1992 conviction for rape. New Zealand immigration law stipulates that visa applicants are ineligible for visas if they have served more than five years in prison.

Tyson was convicted of the 1991 rape of Desiree Washington and sentenced to six years in prison; however, he was released after three.

A similar debate to grant Tyson a visa raged on in Australia but the former champion was eventually granted a visa.

However, Denele Crozier of Women’s Health New South Wales says he should not be allowed to enter the country, particularly to give motivational speeches.

“I’m quite surprised that he’s being billed as this extraordinary person and a key note speaker and motivational,” said Ms Crozier.

“I don’t think it helps Australia in anyway shape or form.

“I think it gives kids the wrong [message]: it’s OK, as long as you’re rich and famous, to be an absolute bastard.”

Tyson’s visit however is championed by another charity. Reverend Bill Crews of the Uniting Church says the former prize-fighter’s visit will raise approximately AU$250,000 (£160,000) for Aboriginal children.

“We deal with kids who are the most needy and the most desperate and the ones who fall between the cracks,” said Reverend Crews.

“We deal with kids who probably are like Mike Tyson was when he was growing up.

“Those kids will listen to people like Mike Tyson before they listen to do-gooders like me.”

The Australian Visa Bureau is an independent migration consultancy specialising in helping people lodge applications with the Australian Embassy.

It was an impressive performance which delighted race organiser Jim Aughney, who has paid special attention to improving Irish marathon running.

The women’s race was cooly won by another Kenyan, Magdalene Mukunza, clocking 2:30:47 on the cold Dublin Bank Holiday roads.

Mukunza took control of the race early and was 23 seconds clear of her countrywoman Faith Chernaoi.

The distance took its toll on the strong front-running Keynan who was huddled in the athletes tent after the race, barely able to speak to the waiting media but humbled by her Dublin victory.

It was a case of redemption for Maria McCambridge who was the first Irishwoman home in 2:35:28.

McCambridge who was the controversial exclusion from the Irish Olympic team for the London games has worked tirelessly through the summer and should be rewarded with a berth at the World Championships in Russia in August.

McCambridge’s hard work paid off – she now stands on a new personal best, one second better than before.

“I’m just so happy to come back to Dublin, As soon as the Olympics weren’t on, I just put my head down and prepared for this”.

“I just raced, we just started off slow”. “It was totally different then what I had planned.” “Its not the Olympics but I’m delighted just to get here”

A total of 14,535 athletes took to the Dublin roads at 9am with over 5,000 charities being represented.

  • Berlusconi: I’m committed to Milan

    Berlusconi: I’m committed to Milan

AC Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi has maintained his commitment to the club after Italy’s controversial former Prime Minister found himself embroiled in another scandal.

Berlusconi was on Friday found guilty of tax fraud and was handed a four-year jail sentence – reduced to one – on charges of inflating the price of distribution rights bought by his Mediaset group to avoid paying taxes. He is expected to appeal against the sentence and was in a bullish mood at a press conference on Saturday. Berlusconi threatened to bring down Mario Monti’s government stating that it had led Italy into a “spiral of recession”. His centre-right PDL party is set to decide whether to end its support in the coming days – a move that could lead to early polls. Questioned on his support for AC Milan, Berlusconi said: “I wanted to dedicate myself to a football team that needs some care. I intend to continue the work of modernisation and change.”

Berlusconi’s comments come after Milan vice-chairman Adriano Galliani this month stated the club has received no approaches from potential investors as speculation continues to grow over its future. The latest reports saw Milan this month forced to deny claims that it plans to sell a stake in the club to the Qatar sovereign wealth fund or other investors. Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport had reported that Berlusconi was considering selling a 30% stake in Milan for Eur250 million. Gazzetta said the investment could help Milan pursue plans for a new stadium or redevelop the San Siro. However, Galliani told Sky Italia: “President Berlusconi has always said that new investors are welcome and the doors are always open. However, I can assure you 100% that right now there are no buyers.”

The latest reports come after confectionary giant Ferrero last month moved to deny claims that owner Michele Ferrero was in talks to launch a takeover of Milan. The Italian media reported that Ferrero, who is Italy’s richest man with a fortune estimated at Euros 19 billion, had already examined Milan’s finances and was close to making an offer for the club. Berlusconi returned to Milan in March, four months after having resigned as Italy’s Prime Minister. In 2011, Berlusconi’s daughter, Barbara, joined the board of directors that voted to bring back the controversial media mogul and politician to the club. In February, she insisted that her family remained committed to the club.

  • Aston Villa boss to meet with owners

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert insists he has a good relationship with owner Randy Lerner, ahead of the American’s visit to the Midlands.

Lambert and Lerner are set to meet next month following the disappointing start that Villa have had to the season and the manager believes he has the full backing of his boss.

The club have made their worst start to a season in 43 years and have just the one victory in the first nine games this season and the last time the club started the season off this badly they were relegated to Division Three.

Lerner is set to visit the Midlands in a fortnight, but Lambert has revealed that he is in constant contact with the American who has been very supportive of the team so far.

“The chairman has got the club at heart. I have a good relationship with him, which is mutual, and he will come over in a couple of weeks’ time.

“At the end of the day, you just keep going. Has he been really supportive? Yes. Honestly. I have a good relationship with him.”

Lambert is adamant his side will not be relegated this season and has faith in his players.

“We will be fine, I always have belief in the team.”

  • Gullit: People criticise Ronaldo because they are jealous

Gullit: People criticise Ronaldo because they are jealous

The former Netherlands star has spoken of his admiration for the Portugal international, and believes people envy the attacker because of his looks

Ruud Gullit thinks that people criticise Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo because they are jealous of him.

The Portugal international often gets a hostile reception at away games, while has has also been targeted by a number of opponents throughout his career.

Gullit, however, has nothing but praise for the 27-year-old and compared his situation to another former Manchester United star.

“I think Cristiano Ronaldo is a phenomenon. The same thing happens to him as it did to [David] Beckham; people criticise them because they are envious that they’re very good-looking,” Gullit said to ESPN.

“For me, he’s the ideal player. He’s fast, tall, is good with his head, is technically good, shoots penalties, takes good free kicks and he’s a leader.

“I think that Real Madrid love having Cristiano Ronaldo as a player.”

Ronaldo has netted 18 goals in 14 appearances for Real Madrid so far this term.

  • Hernandez: Chelsea victory may be pivotal

Hernandez: Chelsea victory may be pivotal

Javier Hernandez thinks Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Chelsea could have a decisive bearing on the destination of this year’s Barclays Premier League.

Hernandez struck 15 minutes from time to help United claim their first top-flight win at Stamford Bridge in over 10 years.

The victory extended United’s winning streak to five matches and also narrowed the gap on league leaders Chelsea to just one point.

United’s defensive frailties, and Chelsea’s devastating early-season form, had led many to claim the Blues are better equipped to win the league this season than their Lancashire rivals.

So having helped his team stifle Chelsea’s comeback with his second-half winner, Hernandez was under no illusions as to how important the three points were to his club.

“This game could have changed the title,” the Mexican said.

“That’s why it was important we didn’t allow them to get ahead.

“It was vital to get the three points at a very tough place. We are in there in the fight to win (the Premier League).”

After a slow start, United have started showing signs they are back to their best.

Ferguson’s team have racked up wins against old rivals Chelsea and Liverpool, and midfielder Michael Carrick believes the team must continue their good record against the top sides when they host Arsenal next weekend.

“It’s important to take points off your rivals likes Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal next week,” he said.

“Next week is just as important. It’s a good start to the season.

“We’ve obviously had a couple of defeats but we’ve bounced back and we’re still in a good position, so we can be happy.”

Sunday’s game lived up to its blockbuster billing, with five goals, two red cards and a series of contentious refereeing decisions that sparked a furious row between Ferguson and the Chelsea bench on more than one occasion.

Then it later emerged that Chelsea had made an official complaint to the Premier League alleging that referee Mark Clattenburg had used “inappropriate language” toward two of their players. The referee later said he would co-operate fully with any investigation.

Clattenburg’s decision making, and that of his assistants, proved to be the main talking point directly after the match, however.

Clattenburg issued Fernando Torres with a second yellow card for simulation when he was clipped by Jonny Evans, and the referee’s assistant also failed to notice that Hernandez came from an offside position to turn home Rafael’s cross for the winner.

Being a striker, Hernandez was not too bothered about being in an offside position when he scored.

“I don’t’ care… the referee counted it,” the 24-year-old said.

“When Robin (van Persie) shot and (Petr) Cech made a great save I went for the rebound and the ball went to Rafael.

“The first thing was to get along the line of defenders because I thought that was where the ball was going to go. Thankfully I reacted well to it.”

The Mexican did show his selfless side, though, by playing down the importance of his contribution to the win.

“It doesn’t matter who scores the goals,” said the Mexico striker, who has scored three goals in his last two games for United.

“It has been a good week for me. But the most important thing for me is to have the minutes on the pitch and help the team.”

Ferguson was impressed by Hernandez’s killer cameo which may have earned him a place in United’s starting XI for today’s Capital One Cup clash at Chelsea.

“He’s brilliant in there and he took a lot of punishment, too, there were a lot of tackles against him,” Ferguson said.

“But he’s such a courageous little lad, such a tough cookie.

“He’s always going to be a threat to defenders and he’s got the winning goal in an important game.”

  • Badstuber ruled out for two weeks

Bayern Munich defender Holger Badstuber will be out for at least two weeks after tearing a thigh muscle in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga leaders said on Monday.

Germany international Badstuber is certain to miss Wednesday’s German Cup second round match against Kaiserslautern as well as Saturday’s league game at Hamburg SV and their Champions League encounter with France’s Lille on November 7.

“This is a big setback for us. I hope we can adequately replace him for this period,” Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes told reporters.

The Bavarians could also be without Franck Ribery today with the winger still feeling the effects of a minor muscle problem.

“He upped the intensity level in training today but he is still doubtful,” the club said in a statement.

Bayern are four points clear at the top of the Bundesliga despite Sunday’s defeat with Schalke 04 in second place.

  • Eagles begin 2-week training in S/Africa Jan. 4

Eagles begin 2-week training in S/Africa Jan. 4

Nigeria have announced that the country’s final preparation for the 2013 AFCON will be in South Africa from January 4.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) general secretary Musa Amadu disclosed that the Eagles’ final phase of Nations Cup camping will begin on January 4.

“It’s a known fact that clubs would not release players for the AFCON until two weeks to the tournament. What this means is that coach Stephen Keshi has at least two weeks for intensive training. So, with that in mind the Eagles would begin final preparation on January 4,” Amadu said.

NFF technical committee chairman Chris Green, who is just back from South Africa where they inspected training sites and facilities ahead of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations, disclosed that the federation plan to first set up a training camp in Europe before the team move to South Africa.

“We are thinking of assembling the players in Faro, Portugal, before proceeding to South Africa for the team’s final phase of camping. The idea is to begin the camp in Faro with players from the home front, then have the foreign-based join up,” he said.

“We have put several factors into consideration one of which is weather.”

Nigeria are drawn in Group C in Nelspruit along with defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

The Eagles’ training camp opens this weekend in Abuja ahead of a friendly against Venezuela in Miami, United States of America, on November 14.

  • Viera to herald new media model for Benfica

Benfica has re-elected Luis Filipe Vieira as its president after he promised to bring the Portuguese Primeira Liga giant’s media rights in-house.

The 63-year-old secured a fourth term in office by claiming 83% of the votes from Benfica members on Friday to see off the challenge of Rui Rangel, a Lisbon judge. Benfica will keep its media rights for exploitation on its own official television channel, Benfica TV, after decided against selling the rights to a broadcaster or agency from the start of next season.

In the lead-up to Friday’s elections the board of the club said that exploiting the rights on Benfica TV would be “the most appropriate solution to protect the interests of the shareholders,” considering the “external environment and domestic television rights market.” The board added that there were “concrete proposals for the acquisition of audiovisual rights for games” from companies. Vieira had previously said that the club would not renew its rights deal with the Olivedesportos agency. The club rejected an offer from the agency of Euros 111 million over five seasons, from 2013-14 to 2017-18.

Benfica believes its new strategy will allow the club to generate more revenue. Olivedesportos currently holds the rights to all Primeira Liga football, but has faced criticism from fans unhappy at having to pay subscriptions to watch games on its Sport TV channel.
