    Shaqiri rejects Ribery comparisons

Bayern Munich attacker Xherdan Shaqiri says he does not like being compared to team-mate Franck Ribery.

While admitting that Ribery is an outstanding role model and a world-class player, Shaqiri – who has already started three games for his new side – made it clear he is keen on developing his own style of football.

“On the pitch, I can learn a lot from him. His unpredictability is unique. I like that a lot. But generally I don’t like to compare myself to others. I am myself and not Ribery or anyone else,” Shaqiri told Bild.

“I think that so far, they (Bayern Munich) are very satisfied (with my performances). I certainly am. I think that (coach) Jupp Heynckes cannot look past me. That’s why he gave me a lot of match time already.”

“Twelve points is a nice cushion. I like that Dortmund have to look up on us from below. But there are many games left and a 12-point advantage right now is not yet enough for the championship.”

Shaqiri shed some light on how he achieved his extraordinary physique, insisting that his muscularity is hereditary.

“I’m never in the weight room. I never do push-ups at home. My father looked like this, I’m naturally this way,” he said.

    Eaglets, Falcons commended

THE Nigeria Football Federation on Monday praised the U-17 National Team, Golden Eaglets and the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons for excellent performances in the past 24 hours.

On Sunday, the Eaglets whip-lashed the U-17 National Team of Guinea 4-0 in Conakry in the second leg of their 2013 African U-17 Championship, to qualify for the final round of qualification series on a 7-0 aggregate. And on Monday in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, the Falcons edged Cameroon’s Lionesses 2-1 to pick up the three vital points in their opening match of Group B at the 8th African Women Championship.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Chairman of the NFF Media and Publicity Committee, High Chief Emeka Inyama said: “The performances of the Golden Eaglets and the Super Falcons followed on the heels of excellent outings by the Flying Eagles and the Super Eagles to qualify for next year’s African championships.

“The NFF is delighted that our National Teams are now giving their all in important games and we will continue to ensure the teams prepare well for major championships within the limits of our resources.

“The Eaglets, in a way, avenged the defeat of the Super Eagles in Conakry during the qualifying series for the 2012 African Cup of Nations while the Falcons have now paid the Cameroonians back for that penalty shoot-out blot that stopped our girls from the London 2012 Olympics,” said Inyama.

It would be recalled that the NFF flew the Falcons to Ghana for a one-week final training camp before the tournament and also hiked the team’s win-bonus to $3,000 per player.

NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu assured that the Federation will give every support to the Falcons in their next match against Ethiopia on Thursday and for the Eaglets in their final round of qualifiers against Mali.

“We are already putting arrangements in place for the Eaglets to return to Calabar immediately they come back from Guinea on Tuesday, in order that they can start preparation for their first leg match against Mali, which comes up on 18th November. Governor Liyel Imoke (CON) and the wonderful people of Cross River State have been very supportive and we appreciate them.

“As for the Falcons, we are putting heads together to see how we can further motivate them to fire from all cylinders against Ethiopia, as a win in that match will guarantee our semi final place even before the clash with Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.”

SUPER EAGLES INVITATION John Utaka promises 120%

JOHN UTAKA has promised a 120% effort for Nigeria if he is picked for next year’s AFCON in South Africa.

The striker, who made a goal-scoring return for French champions Montpellier at the weekend against Nice after he was sidelined by a groin injury, told MTNFootball.com his commitment to Nigeria is not negotiable.

“It’s the coach who decides who to invite, but for me any time I am given the chance, I will give a 120% for my country, said Utaka, who started two qualifiers under Stephen Keshi in June.

Utaka started 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Malawi and was then dropped for the 2013 AFCON qualifier at home against Rwanda after he fired blanks in both games.

He said Nigeria have the quality to win a third Nations Cup trophy in South Africa because Keshi has made remarkable progress with the team since he took charge last year.

“We have what it takes to win the Nations Cup in South Africa. Coach Keshi has been doing a great job and anyone who is following the work of the coach will admit the huge progress has been made,” he told MTNFootball.com.

However, he warned that a first round group that pitches the Eagles against defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia ought not to be taken lightly.

“I have seen our group and I must confess that no team in that group is easy. Africa football is a different ball game and you know that any country that files out against Nigeria wants to make history by beating Nigeria,” he warned.

  • Villa: I’m in great shape

Barcelona attacker David Villa believes he is finally on his way to regaining full fitness after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Spanish striker suffered a broken leg during the Club World Cup in December last year, which ruled him out of Euro 2012, and he has only started to feature recently for the Catalans.

Villa scored the opener – his fourth goal this season – as Barca thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0 on Saturday, and the 30-year-old said he was delighted at netting a goal in his first start for Tito Vilanova’s side this term.

“I’m in great shape, and I am very happy to return to playing football again. I am delighted at helping my team win by getting a goal,” the striker told AS.

“It so happens that I have never played at this stadium (Rayo’s). I am happy to debut here, score and win and that everything turned out fine.”

The striker then turned his attention to Barca’s Copa del Rey clash with Alaves on Tuesday.

“The Copa games are tough and we have to deal with them. We have to get a good result in the first leg. Alaves is a tough team, their morale will be sky-high and will want to upset Barca,” he said.

“It’s a difficult tie, but we know we can progress. And then we’ll think about the league.”

  • Benfica goes clear in Portugal

Benfica opened up a three-point lead at the top of the Portuguese Liga table after a 3-0 win at Gil Vicente.

Guimaraes lifts to fourth in Portugal

The Lisbon club was out of sight by half-time as goals from Lima (2′), Luisinho (27′) and Andre Gomes (45′) set it on its way.

The win was soured only by the 70th-minute dismissal of Argentinian midfielder Enzo Perez.

The win means Benfica will sit alone at the top for at least 24 hours with champion Porto at Estoril in Sunday’s late game.

Two late goals helped Pacos Ferreira up to fifth with a 2-0 win at Beira Mar.

Vitor broke the deadlock on 81 minutes before substitute Arturo Alvarez got the clincher with three minutes left.

Pedro Rui Duarte netted two penalties to give Olhanense a 2-2 draw at home to Moreirense.

Moreirense had twice gone ahead through Pablo Olivera (35′) and Nabil Ghilas (57′) but was pegged back by Rui Duarte spot-kicks on each occasion as he first converted on 40 minutes before keeping his cool three minutes from time.

  • Mbia: I thought QPR were Scottish

QPR midfielder Stephane Mbia has admitted he thought his new club played in Scotland before he completed his 6.2 million-euro move from Marseille.

The 26-year-old, who was sent off in QPR’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Saturday, left Ligue 1 for the Premier League to join the likes of Ryan Nelsen, Jose Bosingwa and Julio Cesar at Loftus Road as manager Mark Hughes reshaped the London club.Q

The Cameroonian has revealed, however, that he knew little about the club and that Hughes had only limited knowledge of what he could bring to the table.

“The manager knew my name and had seen me in the Champions League, but did not really know whether I was good or not,” Mbia told L’Equipe.

“I thought they were a Scottish club. Marseille needed the money. So I thought why not if it is for their good and mine, but I would never have thought of coming here.”

Mbia, who can also play in defence, also elaborated on the differences in preparation at QPR compared to his experiences in France.

“There is only playing and very little tactics,” he said. “We don’t really train in the week, we have rest days, but we haven’t the right to mess up on match days.”

QPR sit bottom of the Premier League table having failed to win any of their nine matches so far.

    •In opening match against Cameroon

IT was an embarrassing moment for Nigeria at the on-going Africa Women’s Championship in Equatorial Guinea.

On Monday, the jersey names and numbers of Super Falcons players were written with ink.

The unfortunate scene was obvious with the heavy downpour before and during the opening game against Cameroon which saw the names of Perpetua Nkwocha and some others washed away.

This means the players may have worn their training kits for the match unlike their opponents who were properly kitted.

It will be recalled that Nigeria’s final team list of players was submitted to the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) on October 16, 2012 .

  • Hatton: My girlfriend saved my life when I considered suicide

Hatton: My girlfriend saved my life when I considered suicide

Ricky Hatton has revealed just how close he came to committing suicide following during his three-year retirement from boxing.

The 34-year-old said his girlfriend often had to prise a knife from his hand as depression took its toll on his life.

Hatton, who has had had well-publicised battles with drink, drugs and depression after his loss to Manny Pacquiao in his last fight since May 2009, will return to the ring against Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Senchenko next month.

He told Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme: ‘I was near to a nervous breakdown, depression, suicidal. Most mornings my girlfriend would have to come downstairs and take a knife out of my hand. I had a knife at my wrists, I was in a really bad way, just hysterically crying for no reason.

‘I’ve always liked a little bit of a drink, but my drinking had gone way off the Richter scale, I was having blackouts.

‘And even if I was stone cold sober I was trying to kill myself. The real lowest point was when my little girl came along, who is one-year-old now. [Hatton’s son] Campbell had the misfortune to see his dad in such a bad way, I am not going to do it any more to my kids and I’m not going to put my family though it any more.’

Hatton claims his life now is ‘really rosy’, but admitted in his eyes he was returning to the ring ‘ashamed’ and as a ‘failure’.

Old days: Hatton enjoyed a drink or two

‘I feel sad because I feel ashamed of myself,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t matter how many people say, “Ricky, everyone has problems and you got beaten my (Floyd) Mayweather (Jr) and Pacquiao who are the two best fighters of our generation, you did the country proud”.

‘That’s very kind of people to say, but they don’t have to deal with this little fella who sits on my shoulder every day telling me that I’m a failure and I’ve let my family and my fans down and British sport, British boxing down.

‘I feel a failure and it doesn’t matter how many people say, “Don’t be too hard on yourself”, that’s how I feel and that’s how I’m coming back. I feel I’ve got to redeem myself.

‘It’s more than a boxing match for me. For me everything I’ve done in my career, all the world titles and great wins have all been for nothing. That’s how I feel.

‘I feel I have to come back and redeem myself as a man to my fans, my family, my friends, loved ones, just the whole of British sport to be honest. Because it doesn’t mater how many people say it to me, I feel like I’ve let everyone own. I’ve got to put the demon and those ghosts to rest.’

Hatton said he had thought about how he would handle a defeat against Senchenko on November 24, saying: ‘I would rather get flattened again so I could look at myself in the mirror and say, “You know what Ricky, you gave it your best shot”. Whether I win, lose or draw, I’ve already won from where I came in.”

‘I want people to look at me as a four-time world champion, man of the people and not look at me as this joke I feel I’ve become.’

Hatton said his current weight of 11 stone two pounds was ‘music to his ears” one month out from a fight at which he must be 10st 7lbs.

He revealed during retirement he ballooned to 14st 10lbs.

‘For 5ft 6in in height that’s nothing short of heart attack material,’ he said.

Hatton also claimed he would surprise the doubters in the ring.

‘The way I’m performing in the gym I think everyone is going to be shocked at the Ricky Hatton that comes back,’ he said.

  • El Shaarawy: I have benefited from Ibra’s exit

El Shaarawy: I have benefited from Ibra’s exit

The Italy international is of the opinion that the departure of the Swede to Paris Saint-Germain has given him the opportunity to showcase his talents more effectively.

Speaking after AC Milan’s narrow 1-0 victory over Genoa on Saturday, striker Stephan El Shaarawy conceded that he greatly benefited from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s exit from the club.

The Italian popped up with the winner for the Rossoneri in the second half of their clash with the Grifoni on his 20th birthday as the win temporarily relieved the pressure on Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who have suffered an underwhelming start to the season – this only their third victory in nine games in Serie A.

El Shaarawy has led by example with seven goals in the last five weeks and believes that his super start to the season is because he is no longer standing in the shadow of Ibrahimovic.

“I think that Ibra leaving has been to my benefit, I have more space to play and to show my worth,” the striker told AC Milan’s official website.

“But the team is made of other players who are champions. We don’t think about players who have left, we think of ourselves.

“I dedicate this goal [against Genoa] to president Berlusconi. It was an important goal and an important match. It’s a tough moment. It was an unforgettable birthday, the stuff of dreams.”

Coach Massimiliano Allegri echoed El Shaarawy’s sentiments, and expressed his support for club president Silvio Berlusconi, who has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion.

“I’m happy with the win, for the players and for the president who’s not going through a good period and has always been kind with us, splendid and always close to us.

“In this difficult moment for the Italian economy, the president has always kept the squad at high levels and so we have to continue this climb for him and for the club.”
