  • Bemused Vettel rejects Ferrari speculation

Red Bull’s Formula One double world champion Sebastian Vettel has rejected press speculation that he has already signed a deal to move to Ferrari.

The German, who strengthened his grip on a third consecutive drivers’ championship crown with victory at the Indian Grand Prix, described some of the reports as “bull****” and said he is happy at Red Bull.

Vettel is undoubtedly the hottest property in Formula One and several media outlets claimed he was set to join the famous Italian marque for the 2014 season.

But Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has insisted Vettel with still be with his team in two years time and Vettel said he found the stories amusing.

“No, there’s nothing, nothing to tell you, nothing I’ve signed,” he was quoted as saying on the sport’s official website. “Nothing has changed. It’s quite amusing. I don’t know where it came from.

“I don’t read much, so it’s quite a surprise when you get to the circuit and get all these questions. Nothing to report. As I said, I can’t be happier at the moment.

“You don’t know every single one in the team, and it’s hard to speak to every single one, so if there’s — sorry to say — some bulls**** in the press, obviously there might be some concerns back in the factory.

“But I’m 100% behind them as I feel they’re 100% behind me and therefore I want to get this straight, there’s nothing to report and I’m very happy at Red Bull Racing.”

Vettel roared to victory in New Delhi on Sunday to win his fourth consecutive race and take a 13-point lead over Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in the standings.

With just three races left in the 2012 season, the 25-year-old is perfectly poised to underline his dominance of the sport with a third drivers’ title in a row.

  • Gerrard: Suarez thrives on stick

    Gerrard: Suarez thrives on stick

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has warned Premier League rivals if they try to wind up Luis Suarez they should be prepared for a backlash.

The 25-year-old striker was at the centre of most things in Sunday’s 2-2 draw in the 219th Merseyside derby, scoring once, seeing a cross-shot deflected in and having an added-time winner wrongly ruled out for offside.

Suarez also produced a humorous response to Everton manager David Moyes by diving at the Scot’s feet after his assertion the 25-year-old was turning people off football by going to ground too easily.

Gerrard said the South American seemed to thrive on the criticism.

“Luis Suarez was fantastic for us again,” said the midfielder.

“He doesn’t need David Moyes to fire him up. But if people want to try to get in Luis’ head and wind him up then it’s the wrong thing to do.

“You saw from yesterday’s evidence that it seems to inspire him rather than go against him.

“I can’t control what he does when he scores a goal, I was just happy to see it (Suarez’s deflected strike for the opener) hit the back of the net.”

Gerrard also criticised Phil Neville after the Everton captain was booked for diving in the first half.

In his post-match press conference Moyes said he had spoken to Neville about it and the player himself admitted his actions were wrong.

“With what he said about Luis Suarez before, David Moyes was trying to get in the referee’s head, which is fine, that’s all part of the game stuff like that,” said Gerrard.

“But if that’s the case you don’t expect your captain to dive like that.

“I think Phil Neville badly let his manager down.

“His manager did every paper, every radio station and every TV channel talking about Luis Suarez and then his captain, who is meant to be setting an example, blatantly dives.

“If David Moyes is a real man and a real manager, which I think he is, then he will be speaking to Phil Neville about his dive.”

Gerrard also reserved some criticism for the officials after a couple of key decisions went against Liverpool.

“I’ve seen it (Suarez’s disallowed goal) again and we can feel sorry ourselves because it was a clear goal,” said the England captain.

“We should have taken away the three points rather than just one.

“There is no offside and it’s difficult for me to explain it. The only person who can explain it is the linesman.

“I asked him after the game if it was offside and he said ‘I think so’. That’s not good enough.

“If every decision in this league is based on ‘we think so’ then we’re in trouble.

“The linesman got it badly wrong. The benefit of the doubt is supposed to go to the attacking player anyway.

“And for their second goal, it’s a clear throw-in to us.

“The linesman (not the one who flagged Suarez offside) gives us the throw but the referee (Andre Marriner) saw something different.

“He gave Everton the throw and their second goal came from that.”

Liverpool fielded five derby debutants in their starting line-up and the introduction of Sebastian Coates made it six when he came on at half-time.

The average age of the Reds team on Sunday was just under 25 with the likes of teenagers Raheem Sterling, Suso and Andre Wisdom included.

“I feel sorry for our lads because I thought we were fantastic and deserved to win,” said Gerrard.

“We had a young, small team out there but they were all men and stuck together.

“There was one team here who came to play football and win the game and that was us.”

Manager Brendan Rodgers, also experiencing his first Merseyside derby, agreed.

“Raheem is 17 years old, Suso is 18, Andre 19, Jonjo Shelvey 20, while Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson are 22,” he said.

“They are all young players who will only grow and get better and better.

“So it was another terrific stride forward for us.

“I look at my team and how they stood up to everything against a very experienced team in a real cauldron of an atmosphere and I am very proud.”

  • Clattenburg is a referee who loves the spotlight

Clattenburg is a referee who loves the spotlight

As a top-class FIFA and Barclays Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg is no stranger to controversy.

He is one of the new breed of celebrity officials, always happy to be the centre of attention in a world of glitz and glamour.

Even as he was warming up at Stamford Bridge before Sunday’s explosive game, he was aware that he was the centre of attention.

The deliberate pauses as he stopped by the touchline during the circuits he performed with his officials were impossible to ignore.

On the pitch he is known for a chatty, matey style with the players that rubs them up the wrong way at times. His style is not uncommon at the highest level but most players want someone to officiate with integrity and intelligence. They want and expect them to be able to keep up with the speed of the game and to make smart decisions.

Before Sunday night he was marked out by FIFA as one of the top officials in world football.

At the Olympics he was chosen to referee the final between Brazil and Mexico, a prestigious appointment in a game watched by a global audience.

FIFA have been monitoring his progress and he is expected to be put forward to be the English representation at the 2014 World Cup.

It would be a remarkable honour, but he is now fighting to save his reputation in the professional game.

Clattenburg, 37, is regarded by the PGMO as one of their top officials, but he has been through some controversial moments in his career.

In 2009 Mark Hughes and his coaching staff were furious with him over comments he allegedly made about Craig Bellamy when he played for Manchester City against Bolton.

Bellamy had been his usual voluble self during the first half and was later sent off by Clattenburg for a second yellow card during a tempestuous Premier League clash.

According to accounts at the time, the Durham-born referee asked the City bench: ‘How do you put up with Bellamy?’

Hughes was incensed that an official would appear to jeopardise his impartiality by making comments about one of his players.

The same year, Clattenburg was suspended by the PGMO after being accused of an off-the-field controversy with a former business partner.

On the field he has been dogged by criticism of his handling of high-profile and important incidents.

Four years earlier he was the referee who failed to spot Pedro Mendes’s ghost goal at Old Trafford for Tottenham.

Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll was beaten by the Portuguese midfielder’s lob in 2005, but Clattenburg failed to see that the ball had crossed the line. It provoked widespread indignation and even derision.

In 2007 he was involved in a bizarre incident at the Merseyside derby after appearing to take Steven Gerrard’s opinion into consideration when he booked Everton defender Tony Hibbert. Clattenburg appeared to upgrade a caution to a red card and later failed to send off Liverpool winger Dirk Kuyt for a waist-high lunge.

At Old Trafford in 2010 he was the referee when Nani took advantage of a bizarre mistake by Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes to tap the ball into the empty net.

    PGA Tour unveils 2013 schedule

There are very few changes in the PGA Tour’s 2013 calendar in what is essentially a transition year for the circuit.

The shortened season officially ends in late September as the PGA Tour switches to a new fall start with the 2014 season expected to begin three weeks after the Tour Championship, likely with the Frys.com Open.

Among the notable changes to the 2013 schedule will see The Mayakoba Golf Classic moving from its February slot opposite the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play event down into the fall start of the next FedExCup Season. The Valero Texas Open will move three weeks forward to just before the first major of the season, the Masters, and the off-week during the FedEx Cup playoffs will fall between the second and third events.

The Presidents Cup will be held the week of September 30th, two week’s after the conclusion of the Tour Championship, at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The RBC Canadian Open is scheduled for the week of July 22nd at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., one week after The Open championship.

The Masters, the first major of the season, is scheduled to begin April 11th at Augusta followed by the U.S. Open championship on June 13th at Merion Golf Club in Pennsylvania. The British Open at Muirfield in Scotland begins July 18th and the last of the majors, the PGA Championship, is scheduled for August 8th at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

The season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions kicks things off January 4th and will once again conclude on a Monday.

Also, with the focus changing from the money list to FedEx Cup points, the winners of the three opposite field events – the Puerto Rico Open, the True South Classic and the Reno-Tahoe Open – will now receive 300 points in 2013, an increase from the previous 250.

Geofrey Ndungu retains Dublin Marathon crown

Kenya’s Geofrey Ndungu successfully reclaimed his Dublin Marathon title in a time of 2:11:09 Monday afternoon.

An enthralling 26.2-mile battle played out on the Dublin roads also saw redemption for Maria McCambridge and the birth of new star in Paul Pollock.

Belfast man Pollock, making his debut over this distance, surprisingly took the lead at the top of the Phoenix Park just as the athletes met the 8 mile stage.

Pollock tired after his eight-mile burst to cross the half way point in 67:03, leaving the fast-moving Africans to take control of the race.

It was at the 20-mile stage where it became a battle between two Keynans and a Ethopian.

Defending champion Ndungu, pre-race favourite Robert Kipchumba and Ethopian Abdisa Beddada were the measure of each other as they passed UCD in 1.49.15 with around 10km to go.

It was a telling move by the defending champion Ndungu with just over two miles to go which neither Kipchumba or Beddada could respond to which saw him come home in a time of 2:11:09.

“I knew I was strong. I started pushing at 39Km”. When asked if he kept his eye on the clock the Keynan said “I just run to win”, “anytime I come to Dublin I want to win this race.”

Belfast man Paul Pollock’s blistering start was no mean fluke and saw him become the first Irishman home.

The 27-year-old marathon debutant clocked a time of 2:16:30, inside the qualifying time for next year’s World Championships.

“I just decided to go for it,” Pollock said after the race, admitting that he had not trained for the classic distance in the traditional way, after impressing with half-marathon performances in the lead up to the race.

  • Pardew: Newcastle won’t sign Sissoko

    Pardew: Newcastle won’t sign Sissoko

The story doing the rounds on the Internet Monday morning was that Newcastle agreed to sign Toulouse French International midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who stands 6’2? tall and whose box to box midfield play has been compared to that of former Arsenal player Patrick Vieira.

It’s a good story if true, but unfortunately the Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has said “it’s news to me” when he was asked about Newcastle signing Sissoko.

Sissoko is only 23 and is in the last year of his contract at Toulouse, a club he joined in 2003, and of course he would be available on a free next summer.

The 5 times capped French international has had Newcastle linked with him now for about a year and a half, and maybe Newcastle could still tie up the Frenchman next summer?

And of course if Newcastle had agreed a deal to take the Frenchman in the summer, Alan Pardew would hardly be fessing up to that now.

But it would need to be like the deal that brought Xisco to Newcastle over four years ago, when the Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan at the time knew nothing at all about the deal or about the player, although Dennis Wise paid Kevin the courtesy of giving him a YouTube video of the player in action.

Unfortunately the £5.7M signing has not been a success on Tyneside, and the 26-year-old is now in the last year of his five-year deal, and has appeared only 11 times for the Newcastle first team.

Moussa Sissoko played the whole game for Toulouse at the weekend as they ran out fairly comfortable 3-1 winners against Brest, in front of over 30,000 at the Stadium Municipal.

It was such a good story about the lad coming to Newcastle too.

  • Onigbinde, Odegbami for 3rd Best Ogedegbe Memorial Lecture

Onigbinde, Odegbami for 3rd Best Ogedegbe Memorial Lecture

The families of the late Best Ogedegbe and Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State Chapter have concluded plans to organise a third memorial lecture in remembrance of the former Green Eagles goalkeeper.

The wife of the deceased, Folashade Ogedegbe in Ibadan said the event slated for Tuesday 6th November became necessary, as it’s about the only occasion put in-place in memory of her departed husband who passed away on 28 September 2009.

FIFA/CAF Instructor Adegboye Onigbinde, according to a programme released by the family, would be the chairman at the event while a team-mate of the deceased, Segun Odegbami would deliver a paper in a lecture titled ‘Life After Football: The Road Roughly Travelled’.

The Deputy Speaker Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Babatunde Olaniyan is expected to grace the event as a special guest of honour while the Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State, Dapo Lam-Adesina would also be a special guest at the lecture scheduled for 11am at D’Rovans Hotel’s Odedeme Hall.

Best Ogedegbe came into the limelight at the Nations Cup hosted and won by Nigeria in 1980 when he was chosen ahead of the popular Emmanuel Okala by Coach Otto Gloria who led Nigeria to her first Nations Cup Gold. He also represented Nigeria at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

A recipient of the M.O.N., Best Ogedegbe was the first choice goalkeeper at IICC Shooting Stars (now 3SC) and was a member of the prestigious IICC squad that won Nigeria’s first continental laurel in 1976, after he proceeded to Abiola Babes of Abeokuta from where he retired from active football to begin a coaching career.

KESHI TO NIGERIANS EXPECT NEW PLAYERS FOR VENEZUELA FRIENDLY

NIGERIA coach Stephen Keshi has said he will pick several players who are yet to feature for his team for a friendly against Venezuela.

The match will be played on November 14 and forms part of Nigeria’s build-up to the 2013 AFCON, where they are drawn alongside defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

Keshi said, “I have plans to invite some new legs for the Venezuela friendly. They may not be new to Nigerians but I say they are new because it would be the first time they would be playing under me.”

The former Eagles captain, who was not willing to give away some of the names, added,”Like I have said every Nigeria player will have his chance.”

However, top officials of the football house have revealed to MTNFootball.com that “Keshi is looking at ways of strengthening his team and plans to bring in players like Obafemi Martins, Onyekachi Apam, Joseph Akpala and Peter Utaka.”

Keshi will now set his pre-AFCON training camp in Faro, Portugal, after his choice of Zimbabwe was overruled for lack of facilities.

  • Murray snub spurred me to Japan succes — Watson

Murray snub spurred me to Japan succes — Watson

Heather Watson admits that being overlooked by Andy Murray in favour of Laura Robson at the Olympics this summer helped her become the first British woman to win a WTA Tour title for 24 years.

Watson’s friendly disposition masks a ruthless streak. And while her friendship with Robson has survived the frustration of not playing in the mixed doubles at the Olympics, in spite of having a higher doubles ranking, Watson used the experience to harden her.

‘I wanted to play, it was the Olympics,’ said Watson, whose triumph last weekend in the WTA tournament in Osaka, Japan, delivered British tennis another success story five weeks after Murray won the US Open championship.

‘I think anyone in that position would have wanted that opportunity. But it was Andy’s decision and he and Laura ended up winning a silver medal, and that was brilliant for the country.

‘I was disappointed but it has made me stronger as a person, it’s made me push harder.’

In Murray’s defence, he was placed in an invidious position at the Olympics at Wimbledon.

Both women had a case to be co-opted by Murray; but his choice was coloured by the fact he had enjoyed a winning partnership with Robson in an Australian exhibition tournament.

At 20, Watson has risen this week to No 50 in the world, two places above Robson, who is two years younger.

Watson said: ‘Off the court we are good friends but when it comes to the crunch, we are competitive. We are not going to be friends when we’re playing. This is our job. At tournaments Laura will be with her team and I’ll be with mine.’

Last month Robson missed her own chance to win a WTA title, when she was narrowly defeated by Su-Wei Hsieh in a final in Guangzhou, China.

‘Knowing Laura got to a WTA final and didn’t win, as soon as I got to that final I wanted to win so badly,’ said Watson, who is having some rare time with parents Michelle and Ian at home in Guernsey.

‘I always look to see how Laura is doing and she has been stronger since the Olympics, too. If she does well, I want to do better. It’s very good that we push each other along.’
