  • Hanson edges out McIlroy in Shangai Masters

Hanson edges out McIlroy in Shangai Masters

Just a month after failing to win a point at the Ryder Cup – and being left on the sidelines for three of the five sessions – Peter Hanson had the sweetest win of his career on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Swede just held off world No 1 Rory McIlroy to take the BMW Masters title in Shanghai against a field that also included nine more of his European team-mates from Medinah.

With Luke Donald coming third and Ian Poulter fourth it was a week dominated by members of Jose Maria Olazabal’s side, but Hanson was the one to come out on top.

By claiming a first prize of over £720,000 he has also given himself a chance to deny McIlroy the same European and PGA Tour money list double achieved by Donald last season.

With four more weeks to go he leaps from seventh to second in the standings, and although the Northern Irishman’s runner-up finish means he still has a lead of more than £650,000, the winner’s cheque is more than that in this week’s World Championship event at Mission Hills in Shenzhen – and McIlroy is not playing.

‘I’m going to try to keep this form going,’ Hanson said after a closing bogey gave him a one-stroke victory on a smoggy day when both of the front two shot five-under-par rounds of 67.

He was five clear after a hat-trick of birdies from the 11th, but McIlroy also made four on the long 13th, eagled the 15th from 18 feet – Hanson birdied – and then cut the difference to two with a five-foot putt at the next.

World No 25 Hanson’s par save from 15 feet preserved the gap, but there was still a possibility of a play-off when Hanson’s approach to the 471-yard last came down in rough above a bunker.

He thought he might be entitled to a free drop because of a plugged lie, but was refused it and after doing well to chip to 10 feet he breathed a sigh of relief when McIlroy’s 15-foot birdie attempt just missed.

That left Hanson with two putts for his sixth European Tour win – the last came with a closing eagle in Holland last month – and he took them.

‘Rory made a tremendous effort and put quite a bit of pressure on me – his second to the 15th was true class,’ Hanson added.

‘He gave me a bit of a cushion early on (McIlroy missed two four-foot par putts) and I was maybe a little too defensive at the end, but it all worked out.

‘My short game used to be my weak part, but I’ve been working on it and my putting has really improved.’

In Chicago Hanson was angry to be left out all day Saturday and he said the following week that he might not be sending captain Olazabal ‘that many Christmas cards’.

But the pair chatted last week and are back on good terms.

‘I was a bit disappointed,’ Hanson said, ‘but there’s no feeling of revenge or wanting to show everyone now. It’s a team effort and we ended up winning it.’

McIlroy is staying in China, but only for a one-day head-to-head against Tiger Woods – joint fourth in Malaysia today after a closing 63.

The rest of the week is being spent with his tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki in Bulgaria – she is playing a tournament there – but he returns to Asia for the Singapore Open and his defence of the Hong Kong Open.

Those events will give the 23-year-old the opportunity to clinch the money list double before the race-ending World Tour Championship in Dubai on November 22-25.

‘I’m happy with how I played, but a little disappointed,’ McIlroy said. ‘I missed a few opportunities on the front nine and it was too little, too late.

‘I wanted to make him work for it and it would have been nice to hole the putt on the last, but it wasn’t to be and Peter deserved it.’

A closing birdie by Donald for a 66 enabled him to deny Poulter, who had a 65, a share of third place, while there were no fewer than nine of the Ryder Cup side in the top 15.

Justin Rose, now down to third on the ‘Race to Dubai’, tied for sixth, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell were joint 11th and Lee Westwood and Nicolas Colsaerts finished in joint 14th.

‘It just shows we had a strong team,’ Donald said.

Poulter added: “The board is full of Ryder Cup players, which you would expect.

‘The guys are still on a high – and rightly so.’

  • El Shaarawy: I have benefited from Ibra’s exit

El Shaarawy: I have benefited from Ibra’s exit

The Italy international is of the opinion that the departure of the Swede to Paris Saint-Germain has given him the opportunity to showcase his talents more effectively.

Speaking after AC Milan’s narrow 1-0 victory over Genoa on Saturday, striker Stephan El Shaarawy conceded that he greatly benefited from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s exit from the club.

The Italian popped up with the winner for the Rossoneri in the second half of their clash with the Grifoni on his 20th birthday as the win temporarily relieved the pressure on Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who have suffered an underwhelming start to the season – this only their third victory in nine games in Serie A.

El Shaarawy has led by example with seven goals in the last five weeks and believes that his super start to the season is because he is no longer standing in the shadow of Ibrahimovic.

“I think that Ibra leaving has been to my benefit, I have more space to play and to show my worth,” the striker told AC Milan’s official website.

“But the team is made of other players who are champions. We don’t think about players who have left, we think of ourselves.

“I dedicate this goal [against Genoa] to president Berlusconi. It was an important goal and an important match. It’s a tough moment. It was an unforgettable birthday, the stuff of dreams.”

Coach Massimiliano Allegri echoed El Shaarawy’s sentiments, and expressed his support for club president Silvio Berlusconi, who has been sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion.

“I’m happy with the win, for the players and for the president who’s not going through a good period and has always been kind with us, splendid and always close to us.

“In this difficult moment for the Italian economy, the president has always kept the squad at high levels and so we have to continue this climb for him and for the club.”

  • Falcons defeat Cameroon in AWC clash

Falcons defeat Cameroon in AWC clash

A late Perpetua Nwkocha goal on Monday ensured Nigeria’s Super Falcons avenged the 2012 Olympics qualifiers defeat to Cameroon.

The Nigerian girls defeated their Cameroonian counterparts 2-1 in one of the matches of this year’s African Women Championship in Equatorial Guinea.

MTNFootball.com reports that the water-logged pitch adversely affected the standard of play and denied both sides a chance to play a free-flowing game and express themselves.

The Nigerians started the game on an impressive note as they dominated the first stanza and deservely took the lead at the tail end of the first half when Onyinyechi Ohagugha fired a canon from 20 yards.

The Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon fought back on resumption, but it was the Nigerians who would have doubled the lead in 49th minute when Stella Mbachu’s 19-yard shot hit the crossbar.

Cameroon then drew level via a 53rd minute penalty converted by skipper Patience Mani after a Nigerian defender committed an infringement inside the box.

They then dominated the better part of second half and would have taken the lead when Louni fired wide in front of an open net after Precious Dede in goal for Nigeria spilled the ball.

Substitute Ngozi Okobi brought life to Nigeria attack and her pullout found the durable Perpetua Nkwocha at far post to connect home with a diving header in the 90th minute to seal a hard-earned victory for the African champions.

In Sunday’s opening game, hosts Equatorial Guinea pipped South Africa 1-0.

It will be my pleasure to come down to Nigeria and discuss with you how Jamaica is excelling in athletics.”

Top sports personalities like former Nigeria international, Adokiye Amiesimaka, Chairman of the Vanguard Newspapers Editorial board Ikeddy Isiguzo, Paul Bassey, Dr. Ojeme Emmanuel, the Managing Director of Complete Communications, Mumini Alao, Managing Director Mastersports International, Ejiro Omonode, Vanguard Group Sports Editor, Onochie Anibeze are among those who will submit papers at the summit.

The idea to hold a sports summit was conceived by Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan when Nigeria’s athletes were crashing during the London Olympic Games. He decided on the summit after a heart-to-heart discussion with Blessing Okagbare whom a country of 150 million people relied on for a possible gold medal.

It was conceived before President Jonathan thought of the Presidential Retreat that took place last Monday. Delta decided to go ahead with it as was originally scheduled to be their contribution to national sports development, to complement the efforts of the federal government.

The report will be submitted to president Jonathan and the National Sports Commission.

2013 Africa Cup of Nations: CAF, LOC embarrass Keshi

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi was put in a embarrassing situation when the AFCON 2013 Local Organising Committee (LOC) failed to pay for his flight ticket from Johannesburg to Nelspruit for an inspection visit to the Mbombela Stadium facilities and hotels following last Wednesday’s AFCON draw in Durban.

SportingLife gathered from a Lusaka daily, Times of Zambia that the Big Boss was not the only victim, as Chipolopolo coach Renard and his assistant, Patrice Beaumelle were among several dignitaries from seven African countries, who were turned away from Durban’s King Shaka International Airport, as they attempted to fly to Nelspruit and Port Elizabeth respectively, for the visit after their respective flights were not paid for by the South Africa 2013 (LOC).

Football Association Zambia (FAZ) general secretary, George Kasengele, who confirmed the development to the Times named the teams inconvenienced as Zambia, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and Niger.

Kasengele further informed that the Nigerian delegation led by Keshi opted to buy their own tickets to Johannesburg to catch their connection flight back to Lagos, while Renard and Beaumelle were forced to cancel their 10:10 hours direct flight to Lusaka to accommodate the inspection visit.

He said, according to LOC members, the confusion was created by the travel agent who did not confirm the flights on time following the draw on Wednesday.

  • Yak’s goal can’t save Guangzhou

    Yak’s goal can’t save Guangzhou

Nigeria international and Guangzhou goal machine Yakubu Aiyegbeni was in his element scoring a late first half away goal for the Chinese side Saturday, but the effort did not stop a 3-2 loss to Qingdao Jonoon at the Qingdao Tiantai Stadium.

The homers shot into the lead as early as the 24th minute converting a penalty thanks to Bruno Meneghel, and increased the tally 16 minutes later through Zheng Long. It was Yakubu that however raised the hopes of the visitors when he found the net in the 42nd minute before teammate Sui Donglu grabbed an equaliser in the 84th minute.

The hopes of Guangzhou R&F were finally punctured in the 88th minute when Zheng Long scored his second goal of the match and Qingdao Jonoon’s winning goal. Efforts by Yakubu and his teammates to remedy the situation in the final minutes of the tie failed to yeild result.

Qingdao Jonoon incidentally paraded former Nigeria U-20 ace Gabriel Chukwuwunzo Melkam. Both Aiyegbeni and Melkam saw full 90 minutes action for their sides in the tie that saw five players getting yellow cards from the centre referee

Melkam played for league leaders Guangzhou Evergrande in 2010 making 18 appearances with a goal in the kitty. The former Stationery Stores youth side and Kwara United ace joinced joined Qingdao Jonoon last year.

  • 2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Eagles get CAF hotel

2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Eagles get CAF hotel

THE CONFEDERATION of African Football (CAF), says it has allocated a hotel to Nigeria’s Super Eagles at Mbombela.

Hicham El Amrani, the secretary-general to the body said: “All 16 teams have also been allocated hotels and spent last Thursday inspecting facilities at the four venues – Durban, Mbombela, Rustenburg and Port Elizabeth.

“We made sure that we put teams in hotels that are not too far from training venues. When the draw was made, each team knew immediately what field they will be using, and where they will be staying. The process was fair.”

Meanwhile, Mvuzo Mbebe, the chief executive of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) insists South Africans and keen Cup of Nations fans would find the tickets very cheap.

“We considered many factors when deciding on the pricing. Our cheapest ticket is $4 (about N628) the most expensive is $25 (about N3,930). These are affordable prices and we have every reason to believe we’ll have packed stadiums.

“When we opened the ticketing process last month, our target was to sell 10 000 tickets before the draw. We have doubled that. This shows that there’s huge interest in the Cup of Nations,” Mbebe said.

El Amrani added, “Our main objective is to fill all stadiums.

“This is our biggest priority now. We started a ticketing strategy some time ago, and I’m happy to report that we sold more than 20 000 tickets even before last Wednesday’s draw. Now that the games have been confirmed, more tickets will be sold.”

Meanwhile, El Amrani also confirmed goalline technology won’t be used at next year’s Cup of Nations. “We have to wait for FIFA to evaluate this process before we can implement it. It’s too late for next year’s tournament considering that it is starting in less than 80 days’ time,” he said.

  • FALCONS VS LIONESSES: We want revenge, says Ikhana

FALCONS VS LIONESSES: We want revenge, says Ikhana

Super Falcons head coach Kadiri Ikhana has declared that the team will defeat The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in their opening game of the African Women’s Championship (AWC).

The Cameroonian side defeated the Falcons on penalties in the 2nd leg of the London 2012 Olympics qualifiers, a defeat that meant the Nigerians failed to qualify for the Olympics for the first time since women’s football was introduced in the Olympic Games.

“The loss to Cameroon is still fresh in our memory and it will remain there until we defeat them in a big tournament like this,” said Ikhana.

Ikhana had coached the men’s national U-23 side and will make his debut in his first ever AWC as a coach when he leads the Falcons onto the field today against Cameroon, an experience he says he is looking forward to.

“I am excited to be here and I am looking forward to the challenges of a big tournament like this. However, I will be more excited when Nigeria lifts the trophy on November 11. I am concentrating more on the tournament itself and ensuring that the women are ready for the task ahead.”

The Falcons have had three training sessions since arriving in Equatorial Guinea on Thursday night, their third session being at the Nkoantoma Stadium in Bata yesterday, to have a feel of the pitch ahead of their game against Cameroon today by 2.30pm.

“The team has responded very well in training. The motivation from the Nigeria Football Federation has lifted their spirit and emotions, and they are ready to face Cameroon.”

Ikhana went further to ask for support from all Nigerians as the team prepares to defend the title won in South Africa in 2010.

“We need the spiritual support of all Nigerians and they should also believe that we are here to do them proud.”

The former Super Eagles skipper also hinted that the Chipolopolo of Zambia are on a high following the triumph in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
