TROUBLE IN IJOKO: Residents recount days of violence and arson
Many people could remember where they were the day about 15 armed men forcefully gained entry into Ijoko town in Ado Odo Ota local government, shooting sporadically at the residents and leaving a trail of blood and destruction in their trail.
Tuesday, December 23rd began like every other day in Ijoko -a small town about 100 kilometers from Lagos- most of the residents work in the neighbouring Sang-Ota or in Lagos.
The invaders
Then at 5:30 pm, when the youths and the working class were away and the elderly enjoyed a lazy evening outside their porch, tragedy struck. Prince Muhammed Ogunseye remembered exactly what he was doing when chaos began. “I was sleeping in the palace when people rushed into the palace shouting that some people were shooting at the gate. I got up and heard sporadic shooting. They were just shooting at everybody. Immediately I organized all the people in the palace and shielded them to safety, I also ran and hid myself because they (the attackers) were so many,” he said.
According to eyewitnesses, the armed men approached the gates of the town and seized it, passersby and residents scrambled for safety while the attackers continued shooting indiscriminately wounding some people in the process. The palace of the Onijoko of Ijoko, Abdulazeez Kolapo Ogunseye was about 1,000 meters from the gate. In the palace were vassal chiefs of the Onijoko, who were having a meeting though Ogunseye himself was absent.
The attackers took over the main streets of the town and began to vandalize properties along their path. Two cars were burnt down while several others were destroyed, houses and shops whose owners ran away in panic were not left out as they were also vandalized.
The attackers seem to have a target: The palace. According to some eyewitnesses who could not be named for fear of a reprisal attack, the attackers descended on the palace and began to destroy it. A guard dog resisted the uninvited guests and it was shot, the dog died instantly. “I heard them asking for petrol, they said they were going to burn it down and kill whoever they met in the palace,” one witness said.
But Muhammed said he had a good look at the faces of some of the attackers. “They began to vandalise the palace and then entered the new building at the back and destroyed all the windows and everything they can lay hands on. I saw one guy called Gafari another one called Sir Kay. There were Lukman and Monsuru Matanmi too,” he said.
The attackers were not done, after destroying the palace, they set it ablaze and watched it burn for about 30 minutes. Muhammed said he called the police for help from his hiding place and when the assailants left he tried to put off the fire before the arrival of the Police and the Fire Service. It was too late; the palace was completely razed along with all the important documents in its archives.
The assailants withdrew from the palace but continued their murderous rage. In Itabo, they burnt to the ground the house of the Baale, Sikiru Tijani. The Baale of Surulere, Ojelabi Atanda also had his house razed while a car belonging to his friend was burnt. In Ogba-Ayo area, a house belonging to the community leader, Alhaji Ike Anobi was burnt while the car belonging to Baale Alabede of Pare Ifelodun was also razed.
But the brutality of the attack was best manifested in the account of an eyewitness who had a near-death experience with the assailants. “I was working in my shop when I heard the gunshot, I quickly locked my store and stayed inside. Then I heard them saying they will burn the palace and kill anyone they met inside, they were talking on the phone. They opened my store and forced me out and then grabbed my son and threatened to kill him. I was begging them that he was my only son, then they left him,” the eyewitness said.
A royal rumble
Muhammed and many of the witnesses put the blames of the attack on Fatai Matanmi, a man who is in dispute with Ogunseye over the kingship of Ijoko town. Since Ogunseye was installed as king in 2006 by the Olowu of Owu, Matanmi has consistently maintained his opposition to his rule claiming he is the rightful king of the Ijoko people.
But the camp of Ogunseye maintained that Ijoko belongs to the Egba and Matanmi as an Awori, is ineligible to the royal stool. In fact, they claimed that the population of the Awori is so negligible in the town that Matanmi’s family is the only Awori clan remaining.
The Ogunseye’s said after a bloody battle in 2008 in which no less than eight chiefs lost their lives, Matanmi had relocated from the town. “Since 2008, Matanmi had relocated from this town because the people rejected him. He claims he had court judgment while the case is still on appeal before the court. When he was away, the town had peace, then about four months ago, himself and his boys resurfaced in this town and they have started unleashing mayhem on the people,” one of the chiefs said.
There has been no love lost between the two families. Matanmi himself has not been quiet; he continues to insist that he is the rightful king of Ijoko and that he has over 77 court judgments to back up his claim. When The Nation contacted Matanmi, he was furious when Ogunseye was referred to as the king.
“Who is the Kabiyesi?” he asked in a voice full of contempt. “You are a journalist and you should not mislead people, did you ask him proof of his kingship? Were you there when he was crowned, if not then you should ask for proofs like his government letter and gazette.”
He continued in anger, “He made himself king because he had no proof. This is not a drama where actors play king and you humour them with a crown. You should not deceive the public for your sake and your papers. I also worked for 10 years at Daily Times in the Editorial Department; you should have asked him for the proof that he is truly a king,” he fumed.
Matanmi also claimed to have a court judgment to take possession of the recently razed palace. “The house in Ijoko belongs to me, I obtained a judgment against them that gave the house to me, so he (Ogunseye) does not have a house.”
But when asked why he has not been able to execute the court judgment and take possession of the house, he said the judgment covers about five villages. But if the kingship tussle had remained at the level of litigation and reason, maybe the peace which has now eluded the town would not.
Muhammed said Matanmi had written a petition against him alleging a threat to his life. He was questioned by the police and released. “Kabiyesi had said this is a stock-in-trade for Matanmi whenever he was to attack us. He would precede such attack with a petition against a member of the family and then attack. In this case, the attack came the next day after the petition was written.”
But Matami denied any involvement in the attack. He told our correspondent that he was not in town when the incident happened. “What I learnt was that it was Ogunseye that came to disrupt the annual prayer for one of our aunts. They were led by one Muhammed and Ibrahim, they beat up my people, so they were the aggressors,” he said.
But Muhammed denied the allegation: “Nobody attacked Matanmi, I didn’t lead anybody to his house, it is all a lie and that is not the first time he would say it. I was in the palace on the day he was talking about; there is no truth in it.”
But what is true is the uncovering of a member of the gang that allegedly carried out the attack. Members of Ogunseye’s family said they found two identity cards at the scene of the attack belonging to the same person: Kayode Bambi who allegedly led the rampaging gang to
Ijoko.
One of the identities which was shown to our correspondent belongs to the Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO), with the name and picture
of Kayode Bambi. It has registration number, VGN/OGN/08/003630 with the designation “Operation Officer.” The other is a voter’s card with the name Bambi, Kayode Ajala with the residence of the holder at Ilupeju Estate, Agoro.
The Ogunseye family believes this has proven beyond doubt that Matanmi was behind the sundown attack on the town.
Starting afresh
But the tussle has degenerated into chaos and destruction. Lives have been lost and properties destroyed. When The Nation visited the community on December 25, the anxiety in the air could almost be cut with a knife. From the gate of the town, armed policemen not less than 15 were positioned strategically. The police men from the Ota Division had been on a 24-hour surveillance since the day of the attack. But despite the presence of the armed security, the people were afraid.
Babatunde Tajudeen, Baale of Okesuna said the thugs were still in the town armed with guns and other dangerous weapons and still threatening to come for another round of attack. This has set the people on the edge and every stranger is viewed with suspicion. Those who spoke to The Nation did so on account of strict anonymity while a large number refused to grant any request for interviews.
“We don’t want Matanmi in this town, he has caused so much harm and he can never be a king here. His boys are still around in his house, if you go there you will see them displaying guns in the open. They harass and threaten citizens and there is nobody to save us,” a resident, who pleaded anonymity, said.
But it is a new start for Ogunseye and members of his extended family.
His palace and all the personal properties of his family members were lost. “We now have to start all over again, we had only the clothes that we wore on that day because the rest were burnt, we had to look for money and get new clothes,” one of the members said.
On Christmas day, the family refused to let the tragedy dampen the mood of the season, the women made use of whatever tools they could find to prepare meal for the family and visitors. In the background, the smell of the burnt palace still lingered in the air and with an enthusiastic spirit, the family confronted their woe.
An uncompleted palace which was being built behind the old one now serves as a refugee camp for the family. Whatever property they could salvage had been piled into the rooms and in the night, they sleep, at the mercy of the elements.
Oba Ogunseye came in around 3pm followed by some of his aides. He was dressed in a simple buba and an abeti aja cap on. He walked slowly through the passage of his burnt palace and on reaching the backyard began to pray for the women of the palace who shouted an enthusiastic ‘amen’.
“Nobody should greet me in sorrow, there is no need for that, I assure you things will only get better from now on,” he said after he had taken his seat under a canopy which serves as a temporary palace.
Ogunseye practised what he preached, he shook hands with everyone and encouraged them, some of them expressed fear of another attack. Their fear proved not unfounded because on December 26, armed thugs invaded the town again. Before they were repelled from the town by the police, they burnt down the houses of three Baale as they initially promised.
Muhhamed said: “They came today again and burnt the houses of three
Baales’ in Itabo area but the police later repelled them. The police searched our house and that of Matanmi and confiscated about 50 guns from them. They also arrested Matanmi’s thugs and took them away.”
The Police Public Relations Officer of Ogun State Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, a Deputy Supritendent (DSP) confirmed the arrest saying guns and charms were recovered. Those arrested have been transferred to the Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta for further investigation.
According to Adejobi, “Following the recent crises that rocked Ijoko Otta town in Ado Odo Otta Local Government area of Ogun State, the Ogun State Police Command has embarked on proper investigation by pouncing on the perpetrators of the crises that lasted for days and arrested nine suspects with arms and ammunition.”
He added that “some suspected hoodlums had been on rampage in connection with the lingering Onijoko Obaship crises and set ablaze some houses while several people were injured.”
The Police spokesperson also said a team of police detectives raided the palaces of both Ogunseye and Matanmi. “This investigation prompted the police teams from the Department of Criminal Investigation, Police Mobile Force, coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of department of operations Ogun State Command DCP Egberebi Egbuson to conduct search and raids on the palaces and premises of the two disputing rulers, Oba Montanmi and Oba Ogunseye on 27th December at night time, where nine suspects were arrested and 12 locally made single barreled guns, two pump action guns,191 cartridges, two cutlasses, one axe, charms and masquerade clothing were recovered in the palace of Oba Montanmi and one butt of a locally made single barreled gun was recovered in the palace of Oba Ogunseye.”
It was also gathered that the Ogun State Police Command had invited both Matanmi and Ogunseye but it was learnt that it was only Ogunseye that honoured the invitation.
Meanwhile, residents are pleading with the government to step into the matter and resolve the lingering crisis. “The government should help us, this problem is too much, we need protection in this town, that is the only thing we are asking from the government,” Muhammed said.
The incessant attack has taken its toll on the town. It is a major setback for the town which hosts two major industries, Dangote Salt and Union Dicon Salt. Ijoko is also a major railway terminus and its close proximity to Lagos and Ota makes it attractive to investors.
“People are living in fear and the residents have complained to the government, those who have houses are moving out en-mass for fear of being killed, the morale of this town is low and people are not happy,” one of the chiefs said.
When will the government stop this living in fear for the residents and restore sanity?

‘Ministry must not be on gifts’
Bishop Humphrey Erumaka is the General Overseerof Word Base Assembly. He spoke with Yetunde Oladeinde about life in the ministry, challenges and the forthcoming crusade tagged My unbeatable God.
How has it been running your church for over twenty years?
The church clocked20 years in 2014 and it has been a wonderful experience. When we started, we were in a smaller church but we are now in this magnificent building.
We have two other branches in Ejigbo and Magodo in Lagos. In addition, work is in progress in Lekki and we have more expanse of land.
We also have branches in Owerri and Umuahia. In the ministry, I have travelled to all the continents of the world except Russia.
We have also supported missionary works all over the world. For us, the word of God has kept our church.
We have stood on the clear veracity of the word. I believe that the ministry is not founded on gifts but the word of God.
When did the call come for you?
I trained as a journalist and practised. In 1988, God called me to full time ministry.
For the first six years, I travelled for the ministry and erected a building where we started from. The word of God is progressing and I never felt like quitting at any point but felt things could get better. Ministry is a journey of faith; you can’t do much without him showing up.
As an ex-journalist, how many Christian books have you written?
I have written ten researched books. One of them titled Restoring mandate dignity won the triumphant award in North Carolina. The latest called Book of errors won another award. One of my classics is titled Divine power deposits and the best is called Sustainable friendship.
Interestingly, one individual has printed over 12,000 copies and shared free.
What are some of the challenges in the ministry?
Most of the common challenges are meeting up budget to schedule project dates starring at you. If you start trusting Him,
He would not abandon you midway.
How would you describe the state of the nation at the moment?
The situation appears unstable especially regarding the presidential elections in parts where Boko Haram has exercised damage.
It is more of a national disaster. I have been to top clergy meetings where we donated money in good measure to send to our brothers in the north. We are doing our best but how much can you help a man who has lost house, family and more?
When there is peace, things would be restored. There is war, whatever you give is a relief. We need the crisis in the north to stop and we must stop politicising it.
Despite the fact that there are many churches, unrighteousness is still the order of the day. Why is this so?
That is not in the absolute sense. Put the other way, you can imagine what would have happened if there are no churches. People do not need the church to be righteous. You have the positional righteousness which you receive from Christ as a free gift. The Bible says he that is righteous doeth good and has right consciousness.
A Muslim can be right conscious but that does not give him the positional consciousness. When a people in a nation are righteous, then righteousness exalts a nation.
A lot of people have the positional righteousness but you have to teach them to be right conscious.
What projects are you working on at the moment?
At the moment, we are working on our annual festival of power and prayer crusade, which will take place from 4th to 11th January. It is not all about the church but the community.
It is a period when we open our doors to members of the public. Over the years, a number of testimonies abound to the extent that it is now the community that demands for it. The theme for the next edition of the programme is tagged My unbeatable God.
Our God never fails. We have done it for six years and it is usually a time to wait on God to start the year on a positive note. It is better to wait on the Lord because if you do not do it HIS way, you may go round looking for what God has placed just next door to you.
Prayer is a two-way thing and it is better to pray and ask for direction. The programme is interdenominational and we have a number of speakers that include Sam Ihenacho from Enugu; Pastor Diallo from Canada and friends from within the country.
For music, we have people like Frank Edwards, Sharon and David Moore for our all praise night on Friday. In terms of security everything is intact; we have surveillance gadgets, police and vigilance groups involved.
What are some of the testimonies from previous programmes?
Over the years, we have had a number of cases of healing; declarations are made in terms of God’s blessings and breakthroughs. A number of people who have been married without children come the following year with their own children.
We also have cases of those who did not come to the programme but they were touched in their homes as well as those who built properties within the year.
Of course, there are also testimonies about the testimonies about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and people who also got clear cut instructions that led to relocation.
If you are the president of Nigeria, what would you do differently?
The greatest challenge in Nigeria is poverty and it is orchestrated by corruption. Nigerians are not lazy but the opportunities and facilities are not favourable.
In China, people are running factories from their garage but here we have issues with electricity. This leads to restiveness and makes our youth available tools.

‘I want justice!’ says amputee, whose leg was damaged by a driver
Ezekiel Yakubu, 30, whose leg was amputated after he was hit by a driver, cries out, saying he has been abandoned to suffering and penury. He is also not happy with the way the police and lawyer have gone about the case. Taiwo Abiodun reports
Whilst the whole world was celebrating Christmas and preparing to breeze into the new year with joy and expectation, Ezekiel Yakubu, a panel beater is left to wallow in self-pity and cry his eyes out, having lost one of his legs to a reckless driver and abandoned to his fate.
When The Nation met him in his one-room apartment at No 18, Otutu street in Owo, Ondo State, he was a sorry sight, as he and his family struggled to contain their emotions. Sighting this reporter, he managed to prop himself up in greeting, with the help of some members of his family and his two crutches. “See how they have rendered me useless for life,” he lamented, chocking back tears.
“The worst part” he explained “is that they have abandoned me. Last year I was still with my two legs, and now I only have a leg and crutches. It is now that I really appreciate the value of having two legs.”
Continuing, he said “I am a panel beater, but anytime my customers bring their vehicles for body works and see my amputated leg and broken arm still cast in iron, they turn back, knowing that I cannot do the job again. Even my doctors have warned me not to do any hard work. Naturally that translates to hunger, for me and my family. I used to be the breadwinner, but my hope has been dashed, while the lady who inflicted this on me is out there, walking freely. But I believe God knows best and will surely judge.”
Simultaneously, he revealed the stump of his amputated leg to show how far it has healed, while his landlady, who had also come to sympathise with him, consoled him. Yakubu’s right leg has been amputated, while a metal is affixed to his arm, awaiting another surgery.
The Kogi -born panel beater described his condition as pathetic and claimed that he has been cheated because he has nobody to defend or fight for him. He said the police and the lawyer who drafted the agreement, while he was in coma showed no milk of kindness, as they treated the case without levity, simply because there was nobody in high authority to fight for him.
Black Saturday
His travail began on a certain black Saturday around 8 o’clock in the evening, as he sat in front of his house on number 18, Otutu Street, Owo ( Ondo State), when a Jeep veered off the road and rammed into him, leaving his lower right leg a mangled flesh, tissue and splintered bones. Luckily, his pregnant wife had just left to fetch him his phone. He explained that that was how she escaped the horror of the night. His sister, who had also been with him that evening, had also left a few minutes earlier.
He recalled that the incident occurred on March 8, 2014. A heavy flash of light hit his eyes, and before he knew what hit him, a massive metal rammed into him, and he found himself under the Jeep.
“The Jeep mutilated my Okada where I parked it, and dragged me to another shop, where it also destroyed their well and generator. Later my leg, held by two shreds of veins was pulled out of the rim of the tyre. It had been crushed beyond recognition. ”
And then he passed out
He woke up to find himself on a bed at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State. “I did not know I had spent eight days in the hospital .It was when I heard my phone alarm which usually wake me up for work go off that I came fully awake. In my subconscious, I thought it was time to go to work and made to get up, as usual. I looked up and saw a hanging leg; confused, I wiped my face to be sure I wasn’t dreaming. I tried to raise my leg up but could not .I also saw oxygen cylinder and pipes by my side; and then I felt a sharp pain on my thigh. I also saw that they had removed some flesh from my thigh (graft) and added it to the stump of my leg. By this time, I’d become fully conscious and begun to feel the pain. Real pain. It was then that the doctor on duty approached me and asked what colour of clothe he was wearing, apparently to know if I was indeed fully conscious.
He narrated how I went through surgery and how he wasn’t even sure I would survive. I asked my sister who was by my side whether I was on a bike when I had the accident. I just started asking questions upon questions. Later, the whole episode was narrated and I was able to recollect all what happened and how they had to amputate my leg and put an iron in my upper arm.”
Jeep not impounded
What pained Yakubu most is that the girl, Bukola who almost snuffed life out of him did not come to visit him throughout his three months stay in the hospital. He said “it is only her mother who kept coming. When I asked why her daughter wasn’t visiting, she defended her saying she was afraid of being lynched.”
Yakubu disclosed that the owner of the car spent about 200,000 naira, while Bukola’s father spent about 20,000 naira. Personally, Yakubu said he spent up to 800,000 naira, as he was receiving anti-tetanus injections three times a day for three months, with each injection costing about 2,000 naira. “At a point, when it became scarce,” he said “I spent 2, 500 naira purchasing each injection outside the hospital. I also spent money on feeding. My relatives were borrowing money and soon became beggars.”
Scandalised!
Even Yakubu’s neighbours feel scandalised that he has been so cheated. The food vendor whose generator was damaged by the vehicle lamented the neglect and said she insisted and her damaged generator, which was taken to the police station, was later replaced with a new one. She revealed that they were also made to repair the wall of the well that was damaged.
Another resident who was in tears said “What pained us is the way and manner Ezekiel was treated. They thought they could cheat the young man because he has nobody, but I am happy that a newspaper will now expose them. Imagine, they went to a lawyer who drafted a ridiculous agreement just to let the driver get off for free after destroying him. They gave him 100, 000 naira and abandoned him, forgetting that God is there watching.”
Chinedu Ojaja who lives in the neighbourhood said the agreement drafted was a cheat on Yakubu. “Why should they refuse to repair his Okada that was destroyed? Up till this moment, the okada, which is supposed to earn him income is lying destroyed at the police station, while the Jeep that inflicted the damages was not even taken to the station. Even the car’s registration number was not quoted in the agreement.
Yakubu’s landlady also described the police’s attitude and the drafted agreement as callous. “Ezekiel’s wife is still a small girl with a baby. Is this how she’s going to be living for the rest of her life? Ezekiel is the one sponsoring his younger sister, Helen at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic. What becomes of the poor girl now? Do you know that I have not even set my eyes on the accused, who caused all this problems till date? I am begging the Inspector General of the Police to look into this case urgently.
Yakubu’s wife and some of the residents recall how the owner of the car came that night and simply wanted his car removed, without any recourse to the poor man’s condition. She said the car was never even taken to the station, while her husband’s damaged okada was still lying at the Station.
“Even the policemen who came to retrieve the car were dead drunk, as they threatened to shoot anybody who as much as got in their way.
Ridiculous Agreement
Another thing that baffled them was the manner in which an agreement was reached while the victim was still in coma.
The accident occurred on the 8th of March and five days later (on the 13th of March), with Yakubu still lying in coma, an agreement was drafted by a lawyer and signed by the girl’s father, Chief Samuel Adegbegi. He promised to foot the hospital bill and rehabilitate him, but all these were not fulfilled.
Speaking, Yakubu said “my sister was made to sign on my behalf that the father of Bukola would take care of the expenses in the hospital, replace my leg with artificial limb and rehabilitate me. They also wrote that my Okada should not be repaired. This was a bike that was parked in the compound and crushed by a veering jeep. I wonder how a lawyer could have drafted such agreement and a police adopt it just because I was in coma.
I also learnt that the lady was detained for only two days and then released. Today, they are driving the vehicle about, and the girl is gallivanting around, saying I had been settled with 100,000 naira. Meanwhile, I have spent over 850, 000 naira, while they have only paid 220,000 naira. When I was discharged, the lady’s family brought 100,000 naira as compensation and I have not seen her since then,” he said . Investigation reveals that the said driver has no driving license while the car belongs to her boyfriend.
Yakubu’s wife who is nursing a baby described the day as a bad day. She revealed that when it was time for her to be delivered, the doctor had opt for a Caesarian Section, owing to her state of mind, while her family members came all the way from Kogi with borrowed money to pay her bills and be with her.
A remorseless Bukola
When the lady, Bukola was contacted, she confirmed the incident. Asked about the whereabouts of the car, she said “I am not the owner; the owner has taken it away.” She also said it is true that jeep was never taken to the police station. Pressed further, she refused to disclose the owner of the car “I have settled the boy. What else does he want?”
She claimed to be a Political Science student of one of Nigerian Universities. On another occasion, she said she has left for a polytechnic; and then again she said she is a student at a College of Education, but could not produce an identity card when requested. .
Asked why she has neglected the victim, she retorted “He is lying .All these problems was caused by my father who promised and signed an agreement to give him money and rehabilitate him. My mother also used to go to him with money. My father paid the fees for the amputation of the leg, and after that he (her father) did not say anything again.”
Bukola also said it is true that the victim was given 100,000 naira: “My mother paid 50,000 naira and the owner of the car also paid 50,000 naira .It was his mother who asked the doctor to amputate the leg. I think the guy is poor and needs money; that’s why he is talking like this. We gave him 100,000 naira. Isn’t that money? Does he want us to build a house for him?”
On why they have not fulfilled their promise on the artificial leg, Bukola said “the artificial leg is 200,000 naira, but the owner of the car said he cannot purchase it, because it is too expensive. That is why we gave him 100,000 naira, so his wife could use it for business .I think he should blame his mother who said they should cut off his leg.”
She also boasted that she is ready for the worst. “If you want to take me to court, go ahead. If it is prison, I am ready to spend 20 years in prison. We did not render him useless! I spent a week at the police station.”
When contacted, the police confirmed the story.

Oritsejafor fetes less privileged
•Distributes cars, grinding machines, others
The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Presiding Pastor of the Word of Life Bible Church Warri, Delta State, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has been described as a true Christian leader who practices what he preaches.
Imam Mohammed Saidu from Maiduguri, Borno State stated this at the annual poverty alleviation programme of the Eagle Flight Micro Finance Bank, a brainchild of the Word of Life Bible Church where items such as seven brand new Hyundai Grand cars meant for taxis, 20 tricycles, 100 grinding machines and several other consolation gifts were given out to people.
He described the gesture by the church as a practical expression of love.
He said the CAN president has always been a man of the people and a bridge builder between the christians and the muslims.
Oritsejafor, who also inaugurated the new headquarters of the bank at the programme, said he was quite excited and very fulfilled because the true essence of christianity is to love.
According to him, the Eagle Flight Micro Finance bank was set up about nine years ago to provide banking services to the less priviledge in the society and offer soft loans to indigent members of the society.
He said it is part of the church’s effort at reaching out to the downtroden in the society who cannot afford the huge interest charged by commercial banks.
Also, he said the gifts are given out annually to assist the people in their businesses.
One of the guests at the event, Professor Mohammed Al-Amin, managing director of the Federal Housing Authority, described Pastor Oritsejafor as a true christian who practices what he preaches.
“It is a practical manifestation of the religion. Many pastors across the country have been preaching but Pastor Oritsejafor really has been wolking the preaching,” Amin stated.
He, however, enjoined the CAN boss not to restrict the gestures to Warri alone but to extend it to all parts of the country because it is all about love.
Two of the beneficiaries of the cars, 24-year-old Augustine Chinaso and 20-year-old Dazide Boy, said they were overwhelmed with the unexpected cars given out to them.
Chinaso thanked the Church for its magnimity, adding that he would forever be grateful to the church for lifting him out of poverty as the taxi would be a source income for his sustainance and finance his education.
According the Chairman of the Bank, Rev. (Mrs.) Helen Oritsajafor, the poverty alleviation programme aligns with Oritsejafor’s desire to minister not just to the spiritual need of man but also to the physical and economical needs of human existence.
Furthermore, she said the bank turnover has risen to well over N25bn with a staff strength of over 300.
The bank, she added, has empowered and registered about 3.5m micro credit groups with a cash value of about N2.5bn.
Mrs. Oritsejafor explained that loans have been granted to Small Medium Scale Enterprises to the tune of N10bn and corporate bodies with a cash value of N15bn.
“To further encourage entrepreneurial development and inculcate the culture of savings, the bank has approved the opening of accounts with a minimum balance of just N500 for savings, N1,500 for current accounts and N2, 500 for corporate accounts.”
